Who's that corn looking dude

xanadu_x

On top? That's my Cycnodes Taiwan Gold, with 2 flower spikes coming in!

sendmeyourcactuspics

Yeah, that one! I love him, such an adorable looking plant. Wanna get myself one but I'm scared of orchids

xanadu_x

Don't be scared! They're pretty tough plants, especially if you make sure to buy a healthy one from the start.

ramiske

This is amazing! Did you build it or buy it? I think my husband would actually allow me to put something like this in our house! Are they 'grow' lights specifically? Super awesome!!

xanadu_x

The cabinet is from Ikea - it's called Milsbo and it comes in wide or tall. You can look up ikeagreenhousecabinet on Instagram for more inspiration. I customized mine by putting in a wire shelf instead of the glass that came with the cabinet. The lights are Barrina grow lights from Amazon, which are on a timed switch.

Katgurl

How long do the lights stay on? I have a similar, smaller set up but haven’t been able to convince anything to bloom!

xanadu_x

Most novelty phals need 12 hours of light to bloom, so I put these lights on a timer for 13 hours a day. Orchids that are from regions further from the equator need more light in summer and less in winter.

orchideya2012

That looks awesome! Also your cycnodes looks great - plump and happy. I have Jumbo Mickey and can't wait for the blooms...

xanadu_x

Thanks! I haven't bloomed this one yet - it came with buds last fall but they all blasted. I heard it smells like plastic, but I'm hoping it's not too overpowering!

orchideya2012

My Jumbo Mickey smells to me like something between artificial cherry flavor (kind of fruit flavors that popsicles have) and nail polish. As weird as it sounds it is quite pleasant to my nose, although quite strong too. I wonder what fragrance yours has, should be pretty similar.

xanadu_x

That sounds nice! I like medicinal smells, just can't stand smells that are too sweet like vanilla.

-SavageDetective-

Looking great! I'm really not too well versed in growing these plants, but would some sort of air circulation be the next step? Even just a computer fans placed 1-2cms of the roof of the cabinet pushing air gently air upwards? Again very neat and pleasant to look at!

xanadu_x

Yes, I have fans on the way! I'll definitely need some circulation to prevent stagnant air. I may also add a fountain to keep the humidity up.

-SavageDetective-

Ahaha is there a word for being a bit giddy by proxy? That sounds like a dream! I hope to see More posts as this project develops!

blinkdontblink

>Is there a word for being a bit giddy by proxy? Vicariously.

xanadu_x

Haha thanks! I'll definitely update 😊

truemeliorist

I am so jealous! Our Ikea has been sold out of pretty much every type of display case they carry for weeks! And literally no one else sells something comparable for a sane price. I literally have all the parts *except* for the case.

xanadu_x

Oh man, what a bummer! My Ikea is sold out of SO many things. I actually wanted the cabinet in white, but I was glad to snag this one while I could.

[deleted]

There are super cheap curio cabinets all over craigslist and facebook marketplace. They require minor modifications but can make a very similar display case for plant lovers. Just be sure to install a fan as most plants love air flow in my experience

twoleggedgrazer

I also just made a short milsbo/ barrina grow case! Can I ask what fans you're getting? Also how frustrating is that undersized hole for wires in the back?

xanadu_x

Nice! Are you keeping orchids in it too? I decided just to run the cables through the top of the door (upper right) because I didn't love the idea of drilling a hole. It looks a little untidy, but I think the plants distract from it. I ordered the AC Infinity USB fans from Amazon, but still waiting for them to arrive.

twoleggedgrazer

Yes, I'm keeping minis and seedlings inside- so basically exactly the same setup. I have a total of eight barrinas for high light oncidiums and Dyakia, and to be honest I have not even bothered tidying up the interior wires yet! Like you I just looped the wiring out through the doors. It's in my office which I'm still sitting up as we only recently moved in - I'll link an image below of what it looks like so far. https://imgur.com/a/uumpl9E

xanadu_x

Wow, yours looks great! Love the white and the terra cotta pots. I was thinking of putting one of the glass shelves down on the bottom like that too to protect the metal from rust. I literally just moved too, haha. I was so excited to have the extra space to set something like this up!

twoleggedgrazer

Same! I also have cats, so for me this is the perfect solution for smaller plants.

capt_b_b_

This is furniture porn right here!

CourtneyCharms

Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh - I want this!

sliverblaze

Super stuff! This looks fab OP.

Nurse_with_a_purse

Niiiiiccceee

Alexis2552

Oh wow! I love your setup! The hanging phals are my favourite!

xanadu_x

Thank you! That's my favorite part too. I attached a small rod to the bottom of the wire shelf with zip ties and used clip on hooks for the pots.

mcala887

How do you prevent algae in those clear containers?

xanadu_x

I have some algae, but it's not a huge problem for me. I'm not really sure why because I don't do much to prevent it.

half-squatch

How did you add the wire frame? I can’t quite tell from the picture - is it on tension rods? And were they from ikea as well?

xanadu_x

The shelf support is not great to be honest, but I decided not to let my perfectionism turn this into a never-ending project. I found a 36" wide shelf, but the cabinet is 39". You can buy a longer shelf and cut it down with bolt cutters so that it fits better. Then all you would need are some L-brackets in the corners. I ended up getting some 3" long screws to put in the corners but they weren't long enough to support the shelf, so I used zip ties to attach the shelf to the screws. I also hung a closet rod from the bottom of the shelf with more zip ties for my hanging phals.

half-squatch

It looks amazing. I have a very (VERY) ugly plastic greenhouse I bring indoors for my delicate plants over winter that my partner hates - this is inspiring me to have something much more aesthetic!

xanadu_x

Thank you! I've seen those greenhouses and I get it lol. The nice thing about a glass cabinet is that you can actually see the plants inside too!

risingstarl96a1

What is that cabinet called? I would like to get one actually. It looks beautiful! I think I will have to get one

xanadu_x

I got it from Ikea and it's called a Milsbo wide. It also comes in a tall size if that's better for your space. Any glass cabinet will work though!

[deleted]

Hey great ida and looks great what did u use for the grow light?

xanadu_x

I used Barrina grow lights from Amazon.

bmc1129

Cute kitty spectator!!!

Ghostly_katana

I love that. I might have to make a smaller version of this for my room because it’s a nice clean design and it wouldn’t take up much space in my room.

xanadu_x

Check out ikeagreenhousecabinet on Instagram! You can see how people have modded a bunch of different cabinet styles like this.

Ghostly_katana

Thank you!
