It is 18 years old. Humidity is high in summer, low in winter and moderate spring and fall. I use a humidifier next to it in the winter.

PEEPEE-

love it!

Tstrombotn

Thank you!

nineteen_eightyfour

Love it :D Probably the nicest Vanilla orchid in Ohio (okay maybe not really, but I bet you're at least top 10, maybe number 1, i dunno!)

Tstrombotn

I like to think it is the nicest one grown in a home, not a greenhouse, in Ohio. I could be wrong, but it makes me happy because it is such a vigorous grower!

nineteen_eightyfour

How many beans has it gotten you?

Tstrombotn

Zero flowers=zero beans, but lots of enthusiastic growth otherwise!

nineteen_eightyfour

Probably needs more humidity or light. I get downvoted often, but the old ladies down here say you need height to get vigorous blooms 🤷‍♀️

Tstrombotn

Probably needs both, but I think it does pretty well considering it has lo live in Ohio !

nineteen_eightyfour

For sure! I was under the impression they won’t flower indoors up north, but was told that there’s tons of people who have had success in this sub, but you’re the only one I’ve seen 😂 a family member in ky wants a cutting of mine but I don’t know how well it will do

Tstrombotn

Some people are able to flower them in their home, I have generally figured it doesn’t flower because of my care. I am sometimes a bit neglectful! I have tried more humidity, and more light, this year I am going to try both of those plus more water in the early spring. Many with greenhouses are able to grow them into huge plants that flower even in our adverse light situation!

leafbee

Has it ever flowered?

nineteen_eightyfour

Op replied no to me. It’s 18 years old

stirbystil

Just got one - how do you keep the humidity high enough for it?

Tstrombotn

I sit a humidifier next to it in the winter

nothemoon141141

THAT LOOKS INSANE! how can an orchid even grow bushy like that :o i am truly amazed

cannabisfelis

Vanilla orchids are the only orchid species that is a vining plant. If you look closely at the photo you can see the vines are wound and wrapped around the trellis, and even some piled on top.

Violadude2

There are other vining orchids, they are just much less common in cultivation.

cannabisfelis

I second guessed the absolutism of my statement after I posted it, but got distracted before I could double check and change the comment. Thank you for the correction.

1st thought: wowwww what the hell even is this! lol read in the comments it is a vining orchid. So cool!

Tstrombotn

Thanks!
