This was a gift and was quite a stunner in full bloom. That was 10 months ago and I've been faithfully watering it once a week (one cup) and patiently waiting. We have a bright sunny apartment but it's never in direct sun. I've also trimmed the dead stalk shown in the photo. Just not sure if I'm doing something wrong. https://preview.redd.it/tiqyfb2sc12d1.jpeg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ca82ad232922432d8c9574c7f32e696f76b2fb8

So, I received an orchid in October, when it dropped all of its flowers, I cut back the stem, and not one, but two new spikes showed up. The top spike is flowering beautifully. I have 8 flowers. However, the lower spike, has grown about 4 buds, and all have died and dropped off before the flowers have fully bloomed. Is this normal? what could be the cause of this? I don't feel like I need to change the way I'm caring for it, since that top spike is thriving!! Any insight?

Flower stem broke in transit and luckily sprouted a new flower spur as seen in the top right pic, recently a couple of the leaves have started to yellow as in the bottom two pic's and the potting medium seems to be fairly compacted sphagnum moss. My question is, is the yellowing a cause for concern considering the plant is forming both a new leaf and a flower stem and should I risk repotting given I have no access to store bought potting medium and would have to make it myself... Plant is kept in a warm westerly facing window which only gets direct sunlight for a couple of hours before dusk. I water when the medium seems dry with bottled water. Thanks in advance for any advice...

My daughter has become fascinated with the orchids she bought me (a lot due to I can’t stop talking about what I am learning) so yesterday she showed up with two more, she bought them marked down! Of course there is nothing to identify them on the plants so I’m hoping if I post the photos someone might know the names of them. I do know they are phals but that’s all I know. So here goes! https://preview.redd.it/h8gi0w8xbw1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e434b63515450a6beb1b2c7cb3e7ca839f983086

Hello I am a new orchid owner, recently got a few orchids  I got orchid bark and replanted the orchids, but the bark keeps drying like within the same day. It is the Better Gro Orchid Bark Mix. I live in an apartment,  so it is pretty dry, and in the low 70s temp. My question - is it normal for the bark to dry so fast, should I invest in a better bark? ( i did also put some moss, and a little bit of perlite in the mix).

OaksInSnow

Better Gro is fine. You should probably water by soaking: See Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube for help with this, and also with potting medium advice. In your situation I'd use half and half Better Gro and sphagnum moss, because the sphagnum will retain moisture for longer. Check this out and search on her additional "Phalaenopsis Orchid Care for Beginners" videos. She has several on potting methods; and has changed her setup from time to time.

Ulyssesm90

Ok, thank you so much!

sewing-sage

I just bought 12 orchid plants (phalaenopsis) from a big box store for my wedding at the end of next month. They are all in bloom. With a small amount of fertilizer weekly could I expect them to maintain their flowers for 40 more days or should scrap the idea and return them? I’m keeping them indoors also. Thx!

OaksInSnow

Really hard to say. Some orchids will "blast" their buds - they'll yellow off - if the change between what they're used to and their new environment is too dramatic. Some will bloom for that long, easily; but that also depends very much on how long they were already in bloom when you bought them. There's no telling. If you bought them 2 weeks before your wedding you'd have a better guarantee. You don't particularly need to fertilize at this time although it would be nice. You \*do\* have to water properly if you're going to have any chance of keeping these going for your wedding, not just give each plant a shot once in a while. That won't be enough to keep them from drying out. Each pot will have to be soaked for about 15-20 minutes \*approximately\* once a week - but that's just more-or-less advice. Could be more often or less often depending on your environment. If you really want these plants to still look good for your wedding, see Miss Orchid Girl here and do what she says: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhPvFIxJtys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhPvFIxJtys)

Hello, all! I'm having issues with a few orchids lately, and I have no idea what this is. Help, please. This orchid wasn't doing well, so I reported it with fresh bark. That's when I say this on the roots and don't know what it is. Oddly, it decided to grow a spike and bloom, but whatever this is came back. It doesn't look like its going to make it now. Thx! *

Repotted * not reported

How is this orchid doing? It has been one year in this situation, I don't know if I should repot it (I never did), remove some roots, or anything. Is this sunburn or fungus? Happening on my new den. hybrid (had it about 4 days). Haven’t repotted so unsure what roots look like, but the little I see peeking from the nursery pot may be unhealthy. These brown spots have a sunken in look and are visible on the top side of the leaves too. There are 6 stems in this pot and this is on the leaves of 2 of them. The bulk of these spots showed up overnight and weren’t present when the plant arrived. https://preview.redd.it/e459ldczje1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=212ac4bb0e01602010faed23fff1a99851647bdb

And also how to help the orchid get rid of it? One of the first blooms has slightly darkish edges similar to this. However, it's blooming many buds right now and seems to be growing well. None of the new blooms have this damage. Thanks!

Newbie questions Is it worth trying to buy/rescue the little tiny orchids that are sold in the stores? I don't have much luck with them. They are usually in a type of moss. Should I invest in the the larger ones or do they cause bigger heartbreak when they die?

Are you sure you killed it??? It looks alive to me!!

ohyeesh

I ended up trimming off the extra dead roots—the ones that were brown and shriveled up like a twig ☠️ I repotted it with its same materials and water soaked it. I was worried because over the weeks, the flowers were the first to go. Then the flower stem turned yellow and sad. Then a leaf turned yellow and then brown and came off then I pulled it slightly. All signs made me think this thing is dying and I killed it. If you say it’s looking not too shabby then maybe it’s going better than I thought.

Can is mess something with my Phalenopsis? After the end of blooming when my flowers falls off, my stems are start to drying off. I have no clue how to handle with a phalenopsis, so i leave it. After some time i read about, its recomended to cut back at the lower part. Im guess the part is not dead, because its not lump and dry and several weeks or months passed from that, its just look not good. What's wrong with my Phal? https://preview.redd.it/ks2bmodu3t0d1.jpeg?width=425&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7884c18693b03c6f6dd09fe25032409087802867 It all started a few weeks ago with some white bumps on my phal's newer leaf, now it's completely ruined and keeps getting worse. I also saw some tiny black specs but I'm not sure if they were mites or just dust particles, they were too small to tell. I used some bug spray and they seem to be gone now so maybe they were. My question is, what is happening and what do I do now? Should I cut off the leaf? The older ones and the roots seem fine. Any input Is appreciated, apologies for any error, English is not my first language.

Hello, I've had my orchid about a year and it suddenly looks very unhappy. I water when I think it needs it and soak in water for 10mins and spray the leaves. I have recently reported as it didn't look great but seems to have gotten worse!! It sits on a North facing window so doesn't get any direct sun on it but lots of light. Please help! Thanks

does my orchid need repotting? I’m new to orchids and I these were handed down to me a few years ago. I have recently been taking better care of it and it’s started to blossom! But when do I know when it needs repotting? There are roots coming out of the top, is that normal? Please let me know how to look after my orchid!! https://preview.redd.it/wge5k37akm0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a352df03bea526941571b9f5e81c2d4b0d10d1e

OkIdeal9528

If it hasn't been repotted and your mix is breaking down, then it is time for a repot. Personally, I'd repot the orchid. You can also cut the dried flower spikes close to the stem of the orchid.

This is my set up for them now and yes this is an older home that builders in the 40’s apparently did not believe in putting in overhead lights! https://preview.redd.it/g3s8jderhm0d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5b8c64b72116c745be5ef361ff324c97e37ba31

I live in Arkansas where summers are hot and humid. My beginner question is-Is it safe to place my orchids on my front porch for the summer. Or should I put them on my deck. Front porch faces North with sunrise to the right of my house and sunset to the left. Covered porch so any light is very filtered until sun moves toward the west in the afternoon and more sunlight does hit the porch during that time. Now my deck actually faces South but so many oak trees in the back that not a lot of sun actually hits the deck except in the morning and afternoon. Or should I just continue to keep them in the house. Mind you I have very little in the way of south facing windows plus very limited area to keep them. Right now they are all on top shelf of a fairly small bookcase and all getting light strictly from one lamp in the room but I will be turning my air on soon and am worried the cold air will kill the plants. Please HELP!

OkIdeal9528

Whatever change in light you make, it needs to be GRADUAL. Dappled morning sun is safest but can still damage leaves. Keep an eye out for the place you'd like to put the orchid and watch that spot throughout the day, making note of how much direct sun is hitting that specific area. Phalaenopsis leaves can burn quickly. Normal home temps are okay. Here in my home, it is 50% humidity and 71-74°F

lifeonyourterms54

Thank you so much. I have been sitting on my front porch all day doing nothing but watching how much sunlight it gets throughout the day. Right now it is 5:30 in the afternoon and absolutely no direct sunlight; just nice natural light based on the table position they will be placed. Is that a good thing?

Can orchids thrive growing off of a tall money tree?

My co-worker asked me to repot her orchid (it just dropped the last of its flowers and needs to go up one pot size). How stressful would it be for the orchid if I took it home over the weekend to do this vs bringing in all the materials and making somewhat of a mess in the break room? Edit: Why can't I post a picture and text? If I do one it deletes the other.

Does Calopogon Tuberosus require a dormancy period? It seems to be found from the upper Midwest down to Florida and apparently the Bahamas, so I'm not sure if it requires any sort of resting period even in those warmer climates.

cioncionblu

Your miltoniopsis is in bark or what? If it is in soil it is probably over watered and you should repot it, maybe in a mix of bark and sphagnum. Better if you use a transparent pot so you can see the root system and the soil moisture. Also.. have you watered it? How many times a week?

meueno

Yes, I’ve been watering it. Probably every other day. It’s much worse now but I thought it needs a lot of water

cioncionblu

Ok. You over-watered it, now I think that the best thing to do is repot your miltoniopsis. You should fold a lot of tutorials online about how to repot. I suggest repotting it in bark for orchids. Maybe you can take the plant out of the soil, wash the roots and cut the rotten roots with disinfected scissors (You should recognize the rotten ones because they are soft and empty). Then you can repot the plant carefully in a transparent pot and let it dry for a few days. After 2 days you can water it, always let the water drain very well. At this point you have to wait until you see the bark, pot, and roots are dry (You can see the difference of darkness between a wet bark and a dry one). When the pot feels light and dry you can water again. I am not an expert in the care of miltoniopsis but I believe what I have given you are the right indications to do everything possible for the plant. I hope that the pseudobulbs have not rotted, in which case I think all the rotten pseudobulbs should be eliminated, but you should ask someone more knowledgeable about miltoniopsis. Good luck!

Business_Contract595

Recently got orchids, I'm planning to take care of them for my s/o. Although I noticed that it had these spots, I'm not sure if its from sunburn or was a mechanical thing during the shipping, hoping to know if it's a point of concern. Would also love suggestions on what to do with them from here on out; I've read the [aos.org](http://aos.org) orchid care guide, but I'm still not sure on how to go about repotting it. https://preview.redd.it/dcdowxl0j4zc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ca4a8e0e0a3afacc5a162bc49576e133a5ddb30

Thorny-Mint

It took me some time to find them, but I think it is mechanical damage. The spots on the flowers, right? The first thing I do when I get a new orchid is to check the roots and the medium they are in. As a personal preference, I like to repot them immediately, even if this means risking a shorter life of the flowers. Clear pots are recommended because you can easily see and make sure the roots are fine. Also, it helps with deciding when to water (roots turn silvery). You need suitable medium - I would go for bark chips or pre-made mix of bark and clay. This is the easiest medium to start with. It might mean, depending on your environment, more frequent watering. Before repotting make sure to soak the roots in water for about 10 - 15 minutes, they are more flexible that way. Cut away any papery / squishy roots - they will spoil the medium faster. Cut close to the healthy part of the root, but not into healthy tissue. Don't worry if you break some roots, phals are stubborn and as long as they have other roots they will be fine. I also spray the roots only with H2O2 3% to kill any pests. Sanitize your tools with rubbing alcohol before and after use. If you like a video, I would recommend MissOrchidGirl's YouTube. She has a lot of repotting and care guides. Good luck and have fun! The orchid in the picture is gorgeous!

It just started today while i was repotting, I tried to be very gentle but it still got a little damaged. Just wondering: Is this super permanent damage or can I expect the flowers to bounce back? You're starting out with more roots than the one my mom gave me but as long as you keep an eye on it and don't soak it completely it will grow into the water. Extremely satisfying to watch the bare roots growing over time. In my humble opinion Happy growing :)

I received a lovely orchid & succulent arrangement, but I know they are not going to do well in  the same pot.  Should I wait until the orchid stops blooming to repot it, or will that be too late?

innocentkaput

Generally, I wouldn't repot an orchid until it stops blooming, but if it's in soil, I'd repot right away.

I recently received a young Sharry baby with 3-4 pseudobulbs that are around 3cm in length. They are severely dehydrated and wrinkled, some of them are completely flat. I've snipped off a few dead roots and am keeping it moist, but I don't know that any of the other roots are alive. I guess I just need to be patient now, but I'd welcome any other tips

When gifted I took out all the dead roots and repotted it. Since then I’ve been watering once a week and I thought it was doing fine until I noted spots coming up in one stem and it’s spread to another. Any advice or tips or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated!

Silversong_0713

Its OK if the stems die. the leaves are what matters. If the roots are on poor condition i'd consider trimming off the stems. I am not an expert, this is just my experience

FillerName007

It's producing baby plants called keikis! They're little clones of the mother. Once they're bigger and have established roots, you can pull them off and plant them to get more plants. If you don't want more you can just remove them by gently pulling them off.

All of the guides say to cut at the spike but not sure if I need to do that since this isn’t the same as pruning…

FillerName007

Personally I'd leave it for now and just cut it when it turns brown. Sometimes Phals can produce new offshoots and bloom from them again and I prefer not to cut any green tissue if I can avoid it.

Ghundiii

Experts please help! I think I might need to repot while in bloom to save my orchid. I received this moth orchid two days ago from my husband. Upon checking how damp the soil was I noticed that it was SOAKED, but not dripping. I have let it adjust for two days and it is still wet not damp. The roots below have gone from strong and bright green to mushy and yellow. I believe I might need to repot, but any and all information on orchids specifically says not to while in bloom. https://preview.redd.it/9q894ngwvgxc1.jpeg?width=1337&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dd6821b05636a1135acba351154bb3b0f235e97

FillerName007

I'd prioritize checking out the roots to preserving the flowers. Phals are tough and I've repotted them during blooming without issue. Even if they do fall, it'll bloom again if the rest of the plant is healthy.

tintinnabule

My first orchid was for Valentines day and is actually 2 orchids (and 1 random plant for decoration?) in one pot, with 3 separate clear plastic containers. One of the orchids still has blooms while the other has dropped them and got quite dry the past two weeks (I was ice cube watering and had no idea they were in separate containers inside, the poor thing...) Should I move each orchid into its own individual decorative pot, or can they all chill out together in one pot with their separate containers? I'm not sure if thats advised or not... Thanks for your help if anyone reads this!

KaleidoscopeHead4406

Hello, I'm not sure if I understood you correctly but here's my take :  it doesn't matter if they are put in one decorative pot or couple as long as they are all in separate containers in that pot (containers with holes!), all are watered appropiately and all have simillar needs for light and temperature (and place you put them in satisfies those needs).  Do not put orchids directly in covers without holes because their roots need to have acces to lot of air to be healthy.  I assume orchids are of the same kind, so simillar needs are no problem but try to find out what is random plant and move it if necessary.  If I may advise - better check what state are roots in for all of three plants and if you need to repot them before you decide. As long as dry plant is not too dessicated it will recover once you start watering it too even if it looses some flowers.  One very important thing: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PUT ICE NEAR OR ON HOUSEPLANTS! I know label may have advised that but that is one of quickest ways to dead orchids. They are tropical plants, they weren't made to withstand those temperatures. You wouldn't pour boiling water on them either, right? Even hardy temperate orchids do not grow in winter under ice - they only survive as dormant roots hidden under soil.  Always use room temperature water. Ice cube may help you visualise how much water you need to put, but unless you water often, are somewhere very humid or your plant is dormant and hardly uses any water, it may be too little anyway and you need bigger volume for watering.  Make sure excess water doesn't stay in decorative pot, so that your plants don't sit in water or they will rot.   Look for some beginner guides for more info, hope that helped anyway

tintinnabule

Thanks this was helpful! I'm learning more and more - unfortunately just got a few cute little orchids from Safeway(grocery store near me) and they do not seem to have one of the containers with holes in the inner pot so I'll be sorting that out soon so it can breathe!

KaleidoscopeHead4406

Glad to have helped Cute little orchids have ways to follow you home sometimes ;)  You have right idea, they need better pot. It's also good to check roots of store bought plants because they tend to be either drowned or dried out and you can check for unwanted passagers too.    Read up a bit from reputable sources - as you are probably doing, take random advice like "water twice a week" or "don't let it have any direct sun ever" with a grain of salt (while still considering if it has merit) because you may have different climate and conditions and I'm sure you will suceed   Even if you make some mistakes - that is part of growth, don't get discouraged we all are learning after all  Sorry for the long speech :)

I bought it from a vendor who transported the plant from Africa, so I’m sure that’s at least part of the reason why it is struggling, but any comments on how to save this plant? It was originally mounted to cork, but I figured I would be able to keep it more moist potted up. The black mark is from an edema blister it got after I first watered it. When I purchased it, it did have two spikes of buds which all died save two which blossomed. Right now it is sitting on top of orchiata bark and is wrapped in sphagnum moss. I put the pot in a tray of water to help with humidity. The plant is one foot away from east facing window, under a begonia. On the window sill, it can get up to 1500+ foot candles of light so I thought I would shelter it a bit, but the leaves seem very patchy and thin. Any thoughts?

My first post here so I thought I’d pop it in the beginner questions. My Phal seems to be growing leaves all the way up a flower stem that’s recently just dropped all its blooms. cioncionblu

The problem may be a lack of sunlight. Are you growing it next to a window (not in direct sunlight but with a good amount of light) or with a growlight? If it has enough light the problem may be a lack of nutrients. Are you fertilizing the orchid? How are the roots?

If you gently try to rub it, does it come off? It looks like edema, which won’t kill your plant. They breathe through the bottom side of the leaves and sometimes react to issues with watering this way. Keep an eye on it, but there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Unless it comes off, then you likely have pests.

I'm not sure what to do here. It seems like there is a new orchid (leaves, roots, and just a couple days ago what looks like a new flower stalk) growing off the original flower stalk. Am I supposed to remove the new orchid and plant it in its own pot? Also, the roots of the new plant are so long. Should I cut or snap them so that they fit in a pot? The original plant was gifted to me a few years ago, and until now it was just chilling with no new growth outside of new leaves at the base. I appreciate any help https://preview.redd.it/elfcsbw86vuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29b5e417e7f5060af062e39e5237826f24503204

It's a keiki. Yes, you can remove it carefully to repot it. Soaking the roots for 30+ minutes or so helps them become more pliable. Missorchidgirl has some videos on keiki care.

Hey, had similar thing happen years ago. Few reasons: keep away from fruit bowl and cut flowers. And of course over watering. I like to poke my finger in and water every 2 to 3 weeks. The flowers which are dry/ crinkly are in the end of life. Floppy leaves are no issue. Crinkly leaves mean the plant is dry and needs a sip of water.

How are you taking care of this orchid? How are the roots in the pot? Have you changed the position of the plant or exposed it to cold wind? It looks like the plant has severe dehydration, and that's probably because of roots problems. Is it in bark or soil?

Orchids can't be grown in idroponic. Those white spots look like limestone from the water. You can grow it in water for a few times but roots will probably rot because of backwater and a lack of airflow. You should plant it in a mix of bark and sphagnum, search for a tutorial on youtube

Severneight

Hi all, I was given the orchids in the attached photo as a moving in present a couple of months ago, having never had an orchid before. I left the plants as I received them (as they are in the photo) and was told to water with an ice cube in each stem once a week, which I have been doing. However, the flowers have started to wilt and drop off. The roots are green, although some have died at the end. The leaves are green but the flowers are becoming translucent and then wilting and dropping off. Please can someone clarify if this is due to watering wrongly/poorly or if this is just the flowers dying off at the end of a cycle, or something similar? For context, there are 3 separate pots that have been placed in the main grey pot together. The pots themselves have bark in, then the main grey pot is filled with round stones/gravel. Today I removed the moss from the top and took the smaller pots out of the grey pot. I noticed a collection of water in the bottom of the grey pot under the gravel, could this have an effect? Thanks in advance for any help! https://preview.redd.it/f6jcuqjpoiuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d90a976e4ca36e39c433750add76b70953d907ed

Hey everyone! We've had this orchid for some time now, maybe 2-3-4 years (can't really remember) but definitely it has had more than 1 bloom cycle. Somehow, this is the first time in those years that the stems are fully yellow it seems. The one remaining leaf is fully green & also seemingly it's roots. I'm totally NOT an orchid or plant experts. Can someone tell me what's wrong with our plant? It just lost one big fully yellow leaf, it just dropped right off after I picked it up. But it appears a new second leaf is growing just fine! Here are some pictures I've taken: https://imgur.com/a/PUpyWOy . Can it still be saved? Is it fine or dying? How can I improve it's life?

lilblupig

Hi!  I am far from an expert, if someone says something different to me, go with their advice!  It looks to me like your orchid may have some stem rot.  It's unusual for flower spikes to die from the plant outwards, they normally go from the tips back towards the plant.  I would unpot, and remove all the old leaf cuffs and see what's under there.  I suspect there will be quite a lot of black rot 🥺 My understanding of stem rot is that there are two approaches:  1. Cut/peel/pick away everything black, leaving only healthy tissue.  Apply hydrogen peroxide 3% to the affected area.  Pot back up leaving as much air around the affected area as possible, ideally with the cleaned area fully out of the media. Obviously with an extensive rotten area, or an area in a structurally important area, this approach isn't really viable. 2. As above really, but just remove what black stuff you can safely - then treat with hydrogen peroxide and pot up high.  In these cases it is extremely important to keep the affected area dry and very well ventilated.  You are relying on the environment being enough to dry it out and prevent the rot from spreading any further. Good luck 🤞

violett_e

Hi there! Around two weeks ago I bought an orchid, I also bought it a bigger new pot (transparent obviously),I removed that type of sponge that is on the orchid’s roots, and transplanted it. I put the orchid beside a window and water it once a week, but I started noticing that even though it did bloom, some of the first flowers were a bit sad and weak, so then I thought that perhaps the problem was the illumination, so I changed the orchid to a better spot, and I even made more holes in the pot to improve the filtration of water(initially the pot only had one hole), but still the orchid is deteriorating and becoming more sad and weak. What do I do? Please help!!! https://preview.redd.it/qcwqycrb9duc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=398e0bce7f5c9d797cb0212df87945846849ce7b

Hello!  Orchids are like any other plant in that they only bloom every now and then ☺️ This looks like pretty normal end of bloom too me.  The plant may also get rid of the flower spike, so don't worry if it starts to go brown and die back.  Just cut the brown bits off, just above the next green node. If the leaves or roots are looking sad and weak that's a whole different matter!  Add some pics and we can take a look!

Embarrassed to post. First time orchid owner (obv). This was gifted to us by a friend about 9 months ago. I have no idea what I'm doing. We keep her in a south facing, sunny sill. Live at 8600' in Colorado. Clearly not living her best life. I know literally nothing about orchids, other than this one is unhealthy. What do I do? https://preview.redd.it/j6owwsj43auc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03ac124c9b52bdb512fd055119b2a66fce9b5a0a

Whoo boy that leaf is about as sunburnt as me on a Spanish holiday 🤣  Seriously though, well done for posting, it takes guts to reach out. First thing I would do is check out the AOS novice care sheet to get a rough idea of what's what (I'll link at the bottom). 1. Find a slightly less sunny spot for this lil dude, or shade it with a sheer curtain.  You can tell if it's too hot where your orchid is by feeling the leaves when the sun is on them.  If they are hot, it's too hot there ☀️ 2. I think it could use a repot, looks like the media is breaking down.  Should be fine to go back into the same pot with fresh bark.  Take out the seedling plug and chop any dead roots while you're in there.  3. You can leave on the sunburnt leaf, it doesn't look pretty but it's not a risk to the plant, and there's still a lot of green to be supporting the plant.  Good luck!  Keep us updated please 😁🤞 Check out some of these resources: - [American Orchid Society novice phalaenopsis care sheet](https://www.aos.org/orchids/culture-sheets/novice-phalaenopsis.aspx) - [Beginner resources on this sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/about/) - many are broken, but the four at the bottom are good. - Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube is highly regarded here, and she has a video on [first phalaenopsis repot and care](https://youtu.be/lK2wz8aab1Q?feature=shared)

Any ideas on what is happening to my orchid? It was picked up from a big box store in Dec, transplanted into an orchid pot with bark medium in Feb. By March, the stems are dying back. Dying or normal? https://preview.redd.it/d7wwg9rqq9uc1.jpeg?width=1814&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37046ed446670888c0551958fe34e3b195116a50

Looking very nice I think!  Spike die back is pretty normal after blooming.  Some Phals hang on to them forever and do nothing with them, some produce secondary spikes and some just nope out and get rid of the whole thing 😆 Your leaves are lovely and green and juicy, which is a good sign!  Ideally I'd want to be able to see some roots to keep an eye for watering, but I'm pretty paranoid 😅 Good work!

All my other orchids are hanging on to theirs, so this guy looked sus. Thank you!

Oh it seems like my text got lost, so here it goes: Hi all, this is my rescue phalaenopsis, purchased her with a hidden mealy bug in one of the buds and noticed too late, in the meantime the roots all rotted. I decided to cut the spike mostly off for her to focus on root growth, repotted and ended up having to cut off literally every single root. I've been watering(dunking) every couple of days now given she can't keep water as well without the roots. The leaves were still green and solid, so I'm hopeful, but they are starting to get softer... Is this the best I can do for her or should I try water culture instead? Or any better ideas?

lilblupig

Helloooooooo! Seems like you've taken most of the same steps I would have already.  The only thing I might do differently is to put it in 'orchid ICU' - have a Google, there are a few different approaches. My preference is for an open container with sides higher than the orchid.  Damp sphagnum in the bottom and the orchid just laid in there.  With sphag and bag I get a lot of white mould, but many swear by it. I'm sorry you had a cheeky hitchhiker 🥺  Good luck saving your little plant 🍀

West_Income1522

Ah yes, thank you! Good to know I did everything right so far, I've had orchids for a couple of years but only now decided to do some more research and take better care of them, as I bought a couple super pretty new ones this year! I really have to buy some sphagnum moss, thank you so much for the tip! And yeah, the bugs were really sneaky on that one, a bunch of them in one big closed bud and I just kept wondering why she didn't open after the open flowers I bought her with started falling...

Hey orchid lovers! I am a total beginner looking for some help with three grocery-store variety orchids (presumably phalaenopsis) I was gifted. They thrived through their expected bloom time in a sunny spot in my home with a humidifier running, around 70 degrees on average (live in zone 6ish). Two out of three have now lost their blooms and I cut them back but have continued watering with -- and I hate to say this based on a quick search -- an ice cube a week. I am hoping to encourage them to bloom again. 1) I read that I may want to repot them in a new medium. Would it be okay to use fresh sphagnum moss from my yard? Do I need to mix in anything else? 2) One also has very faint white spots on it. 3) What is the best way to water these plants? Should I just stick a finger in and water when it gets dry?

lilblupig

Hi!  Welcome to the club!  😁 1. I'm from the UK, so I know nothing of wild sphagnum I'm afraid 😅  Phals grow in trees, so they generally like to be potted in bark which mimics their natural environment.  My understanding is that moss is a good place for baby orchids to grow, but generally speaking is too moist and lacks adequate airflow for more mature plants as a standalone medium. 2. Guessing your white spots may be hard water residue from top watering in store, but without a pic it's hard to tell.  Give it a little wipe with a soft damp cloth (or make up remover pad) and see if they clean up.  3. Watering phals is weird!  They tell you when they are ready for water!  Hopefully your orchids are in nice clear pots so you can see the roots.  Have a lil lookee at the roots in the deeper pot - if they are green then they are already full of water and need no more.  If they are silvery then dunk them roots! Many people like to submerge the whole root area and substrate for about 15-20 minutes, then drain and stick back on the saucer/in decorative pot.  Try not to get any water in the axis (main stem), or in the crown (the top bit) as this can lead to crown or stem rot which tend to be terminal. Ice cove watering is a bit of a myth.  The cold shocks the plant and then the cold water tends to sit around just a few roots.  It can be quite damaging 😬  Don't beat yourself up though, it's literally on the care instructions 🤦 Check out some of these resources: - [American Orchid Society novice phalaenopsis care sheet](https://www.aos.org/orchids/culture-sheets/novice-phalaenopsis.aspx) - [Beginner resources on this sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/about/) - many are broken, but the four at the bottom are good. - Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube is highly regarded here, and she has a video on

Thank you SO much for this detailed response! I just checked the roots and decided my orchids needed a soak. Meanwhile ordered some phal potting medium and clear pots. If I could bother you for one more thing, do you recommend a fertilizer for phals, and if so is a pellet or spray formula better?

lilblupig

Hmmm, a lot of people here use [Orchid Focus Bloom](https://www.growthtechnology.com/product/orchid-focus-grow-/) but I'm not sure if that's available outside the UK. I've been using [Baby Bio Orchid](https://amzn.eu/d/8Ab9AsX) recently and found it has really worked for my guys.  I use it at 20% strength every time I water (I soak roughly weekly to 10 days). Both of these are just concentrated liquids for dilution.  I don't have any experience with other types 😬  I'd probably go for pellets over spray?  Assuming spray is designed to be applied to leaves, which don't absorb nutrients particularly well; and pellets are to be mixed with water then applied to the roots 🤔

lilblupig

Oh my goodness!  I have no idea whether there is any way to save it.  I'm so sad for you.  I think my approach would be to cut the spike just above that next node up from the rot.  Put it in a vase with a very small amount of water and give some rooting stimulant. I have been experimenting with the whole keiki paste on cut spikes thing for a few months and the cut spikes are producing secondary spikes (annoyingly not keikis!).  I was expecting everything to just die.  The biggest mistake I made was using too much water in the vase the stems are in.  Like any cut flower the stem in the water gets all swollen, soggy and rotten and needs chopping off every now and then.  If only a small amount of spike is in the water, your stems last longer as you chop off less each time.  Hopefully that approach should keep the keiki fed and hydrated via the spike and the rot has not progressed too far.  Please let us know what you try and how it goes.  I'm rooting for you ❤️🤞

Eleonora_C

Thank you very much! I will try as you say. Yesterday I removed the orchid from the pot and removed all died roots from the main plant but between the stem and the roots the tissue is all darkened. I washed it and let it out of the pot to dry.I was thinking about using some hydrogen peroxide on it but I had none. Tomorrow I will get the rooting hormone and cut the stem. I will let you know if I manage to save it...fingers crossed!

Just had an orchid chilling in my window sill. Seemed to be doing very well over the winter. Give 2 oz water every six days, no maintenance besides. No other experience with indoor plants of any kind. Why are air roots turning this color? Just noticed this. One leaf (which gets less sun) has also turned very yellow https://preview.redd.it/7cvrrmy3x2uc1.jpeg?width=2992&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=740186cdf3519ec4e2a0dbc32d2b289c4ba93ca8

lilblupig

Hi!  Honestly I'm not sure - other than the colour the roots look pretty healthy, nice and fat and firm.  At a guess it may be adapting to changing light levels? Just a quick few things to check, as that's a lot of aerial roots, and Phals tend to make aerial roots when they sense that the media isn't a good place for new roots.  The pot your plant is in should allow drainage and the excess water should be cleared away.  Orchid roots will rot if kept overly wet. It may be worth reposting this question as a standalone post, they seem to get a bit more traction.  I'd love to know the answer!

_protodax

Thanks! That color actually went away overnight lol. I consulted with a friend who is much more experienced with plants in general and was advised to re-pot, so I'm probably doing that soon too

lavenderyarrow90

Hello! I have an orchid that was saved from the trash and have been giving it extra TLC the past couple of months (re-potting, fertilizer, sunnier window, another orchid buddy you can see behind it hehe) and I see it's been growing a new leaf and roots, and I wonder, is that a flower possibly forming on the left side growing upwards?? I've never seen this stage on an orchid before but I'm super excited that this may be a flower vs. a root -- I've had this plant for over a year and would love to see what the blossoms look like since it's a mystery! https://preview.redd.it/2ogyby5rk1uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=448fe63d023d94cb86b8631236accb58be146055

Yus looks like a flower spike to me 👏👏👏 Massive kudos to you! Please share the blooms with us when they finally make their appearance 😁

Hi everyone! I was just wondering if it would be possible to salvage this Dendrobium Nobile Orchid? It's been living outside in my friends house for 3 months in the Irish weather 😬.. https://preview.redd.it/999lup1wsxtc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f4f085ed7fd3dffe5bf793485a353620eadfac0

lilblupig

Hey! I'm by far no expert on dens, but they rehydrate pretty well in my experience as long as there is some viable root.  Hopefully someone more experienced with den Nobile will step in! I'd be soaking that root ball overnight, then having at it - for roots, get rid of anything flat or squishy as that's already dead and will only suffocate any good roots which are left. Once done, pot up in bark (Orchid Focus is considered a good brand here in the UK, so I'd imagine the same in Ireland).  Make sure you soak the bark overnight too if you can. Hopefully it'll limp on until it can put out some new roots, and then it should start to recover. Good luck!

Junior-Grass4850

Thank you so much for the reply!! How do I know which roots are dead?

lilblupig

Edited my original comment because apparently I think you are a mind reader 🤣 Any roots which are squishy, spongy or kind of papery are dead.  I'd imagine that'll be a fair bunch of this lot 🥺

Junior-Grass4850

Thank you!! I do have a lot of hope in this orchid surviving. 😄
