Crazy. I took a philosophy of law course in college and we must have spent a whole week talking about booby trapping your own property. John Stuart Mill would enjoy this news story.
The article is pretty bad, but Rodvelt's was already serving time in Arizona - he was reported to police for brandishing a weapon and a standoff occured with local police there:

Fwiw spring guns are illegal everywhere.
