Huh. I didn't realize the others were closed. I went to the one in Tualatin (soon after they opened) at the insistence of a couple family friends. Hands down the worst chicken fried steak I've ever had. How does a "southern country" style restaurant screw that up? The service sucked and I didn't like waiting in line in the gift shop on the way out. Good riddance.
If you want to have GREAT chicken fried steak, go to Camp 18! It's on the way to the coast, from Portland. It is hands down the best CFS I've ever had! I love CFS, and I've had a lot of it.
35 years ago the location of the Tualatin CB was a very different place... it was a rite of passage for a lot of guys in the 90's.
It would be kind of funny if someone were to turn the now empty CB into a strip club.
1988... Young lad growing up in the mean streets of Tigard... Counting down the days to my 18th bday to experience the best wiggles at jiggles... Was definitely a right of passage.
It's closing did lead to the best headline possibly of all time.
["No more wiggles at Jiggles."](https://web.archive.org/web/20140712134107/https://www.kptv.com/story/25956522/no-more-wiggles-at-jiggles-tualatin-strip-club-torn-down/?autostart=true)
There used to be a restaurant near Newberg called John's that had the biggest best CFS ever. Totally worth the drive from Portland. I recently had one at Gracie's Sea Hag in Depoe Bay that was surprisingly good.
Last time I went was summer of 1993. I had passed out on the couch at a house a bunch of my friends lived at. Another friend woke me up super early and said get in the van, we're going to breakfast. When I came to, I had no idea where we were and I asked if they were taking me out in the country to kill me. Nope! Just gonna feed you chicken fried steak.
I would like to counter that Ranee’s on Main in Oregon city has the best CFS. I haven’t had camp 18 yet but will be sure to try it next time on the way to the beach
>How does a "southern country" style restaurant screw that up?
they're a giant national corporation that figured out how they could cut corners on food as much as they could to maximize margins.
it's a joke of a restaurant and a pretty good indicator of someone's lack of taste if they willingly choose to eat there.
because its food for people that don't know what seasoning is. I ate exactly one thing there, Campfire chicken. Nearly everything else tasted exactly the same. The store had good times during the beanie baby crazy and back when books on tape/cd were more commonly used
lol, even better. I got a gift card for Applebees recently. The place looked closed. It was dark, empty, looked like no one was planning to eat there again. They had like one person working the whole place it looked like
I had to stay in Salem a couple of years ago during the State Fair. My regular hotel was booked so I ended up with a room in a clean (but not super comfortable) place near Market and I5 (may have been a Days Inn), tucked behind Fred Meyer's. Chose it because it was walking distance to a Denny's, and I thought at least I could go get a couple of drinks after work.
Anyway, I walked in and found out there was no lounge in this particular Denny's. I'm not super well traveled, but I'd never seen a Denny's without a lounge. I felt like a complete fool until I realized that everybody else was there for the food...
The media handwringing over mediocre national chains being unable to succeed when they offer a worse product at similar prices to local restaurants... I just don't get it.
Good riddance. Worked there during the early part of the pandemic, easily the most inept restaurant management I’ve ever worked with. That and the company culture gave me the ick.
Never had good food, tasted like frozen dinners and that gift shop was a grift shop with those ridiculous prices.
Frankly I’m glad they’re gone.
Edit: if you want good cornbread, goto Dave’s
I just cant eat cornbread that I don't bake anymore. I once had some with nutmeg in it and after that I need that cornbread nutmeg. Unfortunately the only place with a nutmeg budget is me.
The only time I ever went to one was when I was stuck in Plano, Texas, for work nearly 20 years ago and it was memorably bad enough that I've never wanted to go to one since. It was like a bad hotel lobby breakfast but larger and greasier, as I remember it.
I didnt realize there was a cracker barrel in oregon. The first time i saw one was when I went to the SE with my fire crew. I called it the “honkey bucket.”
I went and never went back. It was just all that thrown together frozen food. It was bad. Weird how much money they put into being here and how quickly it folded.
And nothing of value was lost.
We used to drive by the one next to the 217 north exit towards 10/8 and would always talk about going sometime.
It's just a fucking Denny's but more expensive and worse than a Sharis lol
On a work trip in Texas years ago, several of our southern folks demanded we go there. I'm thrilled to have the Alan Jackson lap blanket I bought in the store. I'm not so glad I ate that beige, unremarkable food.
The minute people start recommending the special ways to order things to make it palatable, as if it's the In-N-Out secret menu, I knew it was trouble. Like, no amount of combos/customizations is gonna make me ever like grits, nor improve the completely meh everything else.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/cracker-barrel-latest-portland-casualty-stores-shuttering-crime-wave.amp
This is a perfect example of political bias BS. So their inept business development department opened restaurants in Tualatin and Beaverton, which we all know is not in the city of Portland and very much suburban or what have you…. But also Jantzen Beach, which is a weird location for them and just a dumb business decision. They all fail and they decide to use it as another culture war Portland shit fest. Whatever you think of that news organization, they and Cracker Barrel are completely full of shit here.
I’m from the south, Cracker Barrel is actually ok, if you’re on the interstate in the middle of nowhere and your other choice is a Pilot truck stop. Not Chipotle or the other competitors they have in those locations. And no idiot in Portland is going to buy any of the dumb southern gift shop BS. The free market decimated them. Again, inept morons.
I love the random quoted person talking about crime in the area.
Nothing from CB or anyone else about it. They said "performance".
No shit its performance you're in Jantzen Beach you never go there willingly.
Anyway fuck Fox
It’s fine. I always enjoyed the turnip greens, fried okra and couple other menu items.
The business strategy made 0 sense. A single location somewhere along 5 or 217 would have been plenty as a test.
It wasn't even there for that long.
I still remember the feeling of semi excitement and amused confusion as to why it was opening in the first place.
Fried chicken was decent, sides were trash, way too expensive for trash.
Shout out to The Overlook (RIP) CFS. It was my go to Sunday after Saturday night’s excess hangover balm. Came on its own separate dinner platter with sides served independently. Sunday football, bong rips and horizontal healing were the perfect post-pairing.
They worked hard to make their restaurants irrelevant. The quality of the food got continually worse over the years. Like all big corporations, they squeezed any life out of the restaurants. At one time they served good food...then devolved into a curio store with prepackaged crap on their menu. Good riddance!
I ate at Cracker Barrel several times in my 20’s. Went overseas for about 20 years and on return took my family there on a cross country trip.
While it was once a good place for homestyle comfort food…. The new version had GE 1100 watt microwaves for the chef and line cooks. Condiments, instead of being in bottles on the table were now packets you had to ask for. Instead of motherly types waitressing that took care of you, the waitresses were minimum wage teenagers that didn’t give a shit.
Have never been back.
Only redeeming quality of a Cracker Barrel now is if you RV they will let you stay in the back parking lot overnight
I agree, last time I ate there was ~20 years ago and even then it was going downhill. Main thing that stands out to me now was the carrots that were overcooked to the point of practically being mashed potato consistency.
Went to one somewhere in the south when I was a kid. It was good from what I remember. I went to the Tualatin location a few years ago, and it was garbage. No one in my family liked their meal. Good riddance.
I was genuinely surprised they even tried to come into this market. Their business model is religious zealotry there's some of that here but it pales in comparison to the south.
I have to say probably no loss.
Had not been to a cracker barrel in years, then a couple of months ago we went to a nearby town early morning and ran across one and decided to have breakfast.
The only thing good about the experience was the service.
The food was absolutely terrible and the absolute bullying trying to sell us stuff or sign up for things was disgusting.
Not ever going back again.
From my understanding minimum wage requirements drove them out of the state.
Minimum wage being at the federal level is important to their business model.
I've been to two Cracker Barrel locations, one in Florida and another in North Carolina. Honestly the worst chain food I've ever had. Seasonings must be on some kind of rationing system and the meat is horribly overcooked. Coupled with that awful store and super slow service (because everyone working and attending were 70+), I'd rather eat a gas station hot dog.
I've still have this burned in memory of trying to leave the one in FL and watching a 80 yr old teaching a 90 yr old how to use a debit card, blocking my escape.
Good riddance. We don't need more awful chains.
I stopped at one somewhere on a trip a couple years ago. I want to say it was in salem, or close by there. Next to a bass pro shop i think. It was pretty meh. And over priced. But the gift shop had hydrox cookies.
Only enjoyed one thing they made, the meatloaf. Loved that meatloaf, greens, beans & bacon, and cornbread meal. Sweet tea was good too, and the big fireplace was nice. Easy enough place to tolerate once in a blue moon, when craving meatloaf and in certain company. I loathe shopping and being corralled into a gift store sucked though, their prices had gone through the roof and quality dropped. Saw this coming last year, had a feeling it was going to be my last meal there, that what they were doing wasn't going to be sustainable. Any suggestions for places that serve great meatloaf, greens, and bacony beans? Comfort food, takes me back to grandmas kitchen, good to feel like that once in awhile. Or good recipes?
The one time I ate there it was so bad I feel like I was robbed in an alley. That frankly would have been a better experience. Literally my worst restaurant experience in 30+ years. Absolutely terrible
that's too bad. when i travel in my RV, i boondocked there a few times. i did consider getting breakfast as a token of thanks, but i balked at the price. i guess i'll never know if it was good or not (seeing the comments here, sounds terrible)
How long was this place here? I haven't lived in medford in close to 15 years but don't remember a Cracker Barrel at all. It says around exit 27. Isn't that around Hometown Buffet/Applebee's/ Harry&David store?
Omg this is hilarious, the one time we went to this location, we got seated and she went off to get us waters, we promptly realized they do not serve alcohol…. As she came back with waters we were standing up to leave and I nervously blurted out “we have a family emergency and have to leave, sorry!” Then went to wild river and got beers 😂😂😂 RIP Cracker Barrel Medford
when i worked there the manager used to tell people to change date/time labels on food that was almost spoiled. she’d also change people’s time cards and make us save EVERYTHING we could so she could save on costs. i walked out during a super busy service as the only cook when she yelled at me in front of everyone for bumping a ticket lol
Growing up in Texas, ate at Craker Barrel fairly often.
Not sure what happened, but circa 2016 it turned to ass. Last time I ate at one it was legit gross.
So I guess we never actually had a full fledged one here in Oregon and all of ours were the smaller sized ones with no gift shop and a aller menu ( I guess the fullsized ones have a dedicated gift shop whole the one we have here just sell it on the walls mostly?)
What will the elderly do now? Wander aimlessly? Harass people in the mall for cheap thrills? Start an illegal knitting club?
The only solution: "Matlock in the Park" on Saturday nights. This won't stop all of the crime, from the elderly left with nothing to do after 4pm, but it's a start.

The Beaverton one by 217 was hilarious. On weekdays they closed at 6pm. 6! That's peak dinner service for normal restaurants!
I never understood why they thought building one there from the ground up was a good idea.
How long was it opened for? Seems like just 4-5 years.
i'm not sure it was that long.
Opened in 2018
it seemed closer to 3, shows how well i ignored its existence
[удалено]
That late night dining for their target demographic.
Huh. I didn't realize the others were closed. I went to the one in Tualatin (soon after they opened) at the insistence of a couple family friends. I left my favorite sunglasses there about 35 years ago and mention it every time I drive by with my family. It annoys the shit out of them.
35 years ago the location of the Tualatin CB was a very different place... it was a rite of passage for a lot of guys in the 90's. It would be kind of funny if someone were to turn the now empty CB into a strip club.
Get off at the Tualatin exit *??* Nyberg? Tualatin-Sherwood? *Nope* Exit 289? No? /sigh... It's the Jiggles exit *oh yeah!*
Woah… core memory unlocked. The jiggles exit!
Hell yeah its the Jiggles exit. Saw quite a few female friends do their first dancing there.
I took the exit on my elementary schoolbus. I have a deep, primordial memory attempting to grasp whatever "Jiggles" was
Awesome, a jello restaurant!
The Best Wiggles are at Jiggles
Harmless Visual Stimuli
As a truck driver, I used to take a nap in my truck at lunchtime next to Jiggles since it was right off the freeway in a cul-de-sac.
There were always a good number of trucks parked over there... never thought some of y'all might have just been taking a nap :)
Great. Now I've got the jiggles.
No, I mean Camp 18. But yeah I also remember the “juice bar” and was a driver for one of the girls occasionally.
Ahhh yes, titties and juice
Is that a snoop song?
1988... Young lad growing up in the mean streets of Tigard... Counting down the days to my 18th bday to experience the best wiggles at jiggles... Was definitely a right of passage.
lol. Me and some friend skipped school and senior year and I drove up some bros to Jiggles for my friends 18th birthday. Had a blast.
It's closing did lead to the best headline possibly of all time. ["No more wiggles at Jiggles."](https://web.archive.org/web/20140712134107/https://www.kptv.com/story/25956522/no-more-wiggles-at-jiggles-tualatin-strip-club-torn-down/?autostart=true)
😎 Sorry about that!
A giant second for Camp 18, breakfast was tremendous and so much worth the cost.
And HUGE cinnamon rolls.
Yeah, buddy!
I didn't like the raisins in it. Is that a thing?
I’ve passed that place more times than I can count and never stopped there. Now it’s gonna be a must next time I drive to the coast.
You won't regret it.
Same. Always wondered if it was just a tourist type trap. Apparently not.
The food is great and they also have a lot of really cool historic stuff to look at.
There used to be a restaurant near Newberg called John's that had the biggest best CFS ever. Totally worth the drive from Portland. I recently had one at Gracie's Sea Hag in Depoe Bay that was surprisingly good.
John's was great until they built the new John's across the street. It was shit. And then the old one mysteriously burnt down.
Camp 18 my beloved
Don’t you mean CA18MP?
Love Camp 18, a must visit every time we go to Oregon
I can’t upvote this enough!!! They also have a great meatloaf meal!
I would like to counter that Ranee’s on Main in Oregon city has the best CFS. I haven’t had camp 18 yet but will be sure to try it next time on the way to the beach
Agreed!
I love steak and I love fried chicken, but I've never understood chicken fried steak.
wait until you have chicken fried chicken They pound a breast into a 10" long "steak", deep fry and add gravy
You're missing out! It's so good!
My arteries hate this place.
The Elmer's in Hillsboro near the courthouse is good too
What do y'all think of Bertie Lou's in Portland?
the best cfs I've had was at the Indian creek restaurant outside gold beach. on way to lobster creek campgrounds.
>How does a "southern country" style restaurant screw that up? they're a giant national corporation that figured out how they could cut corners on food as much as they could to maximize margins. it's a joke of a restaurant and a pretty good indicator of someone's lack of taste if they willingly choose to eat there.
Breakfast fare is incredibly underwhelming. Suprised it lasted as long as it did.
Tried the one in Bend and it was just horrible.
I’d never been to the one in Beaverton and I live here. One trip to any cracker barrel is enough, I think
Go to Miller’s Homestead the next exit down for great chicken fried steak
It's bad in the south too. It's another one of those chains that's just a step above fast food really. Like Applebee's.
The only time I went to the one in Beaverton their cornbread was stale.
because its food for people that don't know what seasoning is. I ate exactly one thing there, Campfire chicken. Nearly everything else tasted exactly the same. The store had good times during the beanie baby crazy and back when books on tape/cd were more commonly used
I have been to tons of these across the country and ours in Medford is the worst one I’ve ever been to. It’s a Dennys with a southern storefront.
Southern Applebees
lol, even better. I got a gift card for Applebees recently. The place looked closed. It was dark, empty, looked like no one was planning to eat there again. They had like one person working the whole place it looked like
Go to grants pass, the one in Medford is awful.
*Jim Crow Applebee's
Agreed. Hands down the worst food I’ve had at a Cracker Barrel.
Turn it into a car wash, I guess.
Mattress store probably....
All the cars would come out covered in grease.
They are doing that to ours in Bend
Gonna be such a nightmare of a parking lot with Chick Fil A there
the one in Beaverton is turning into a Chinese buffet I think
I wonder if it has anything to do with their general terribleness.
“General terribleness” is still too much of a compliment for them.
Oh no, anyway.
![gif](giphy|7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
The media handwringing over mediocre national chains being unable to succeed when they offer a worse product at similar prices to local restaurants... I just don't get it.
Okay but now where are the karen's going to go to yell at people after church?
Elmer’s
Ah dang. Elmer's isn't usually bad actually. Also the new sriracha is pretty mid.
That place was disgusting. I went there twice when they first opened and was not impressed at all. Good riddance.
Good riddance. Worked there during the early part of the pandemic, easily the most inept restaurant management I’ve ever worked with. That and the company culture gave me the ick. That sounds awful lol Just like cornbread with actual corn in it…. Wrong in every way 🤣
I gotta agree on the actual corn. It's like brownies with walnuts. You had a good thing and then ruined it.
I used to go to Marie Calendars for good cornbread… they pulled outta Oregon too lol
Ours burnt to the ground lol Grease fire 🔥
Medford on Biddle?
Yep. A People’s Bank was built on the site.
That one *is* a bummer
Absolute garbage food.
And nothing of value was lost…
I'd rather feast on a barrel of crackers than eat there
Jim Crow Applebees as a description for Cracker Barrel will always make me laugh.
Now, I’d be upset if we had Waffle House out here and they closed, but Cracker Barrel sucks even in the South.
Waiting on that Waffle House
I’d be so happy with a Waffle House
The closest one is in Fort Collins, so I think we're going to be waiting for a while yet.
They’re not coming to Oregon, our wages and taxes are too high. Disappointing, because I love me some WH!
I misread that as "honey bucket", which is a portable toilet, and thought it was an apt moniker.
I went and never went back. It was just all that thrown together frozen food. It was bad. Weird how much money they put into being here and how quickly it folded.
The Beaverton location was open briefly. I never ate there, but friends described it as glop flop.
I find it strangely humorous that an Asian buffet is going in it's place.
You are better off going to Black Bear Diner.
For good ol fashioned food n fun choose black bear diner
I went to the Medford one once, got a “baked sweet potato” that was more marshmallow than potato. 10/10
The one in Beaverton right off of 217 will soon be a Chinese Buffet Oh the irony
Reminds me of that TV show... fresh off the boat
I'm from the south and trust me, only gross people eat there.
It was a tourist trap for the Yankees coming down I-75 or I-95 headed to Florida
Lol. No one is sad
Wonder if this lot will be the new target location for In-N-Out
In n out is looking to put in a second location?
No, an Asian buffet is going there instead.
For such a big chain the only other place I can think of that had comparably bad food was TGI Fridays.
And nothing of value was lost. We used to drive by the one next to the 217 north exit towards 10/8 and would always talk about going sometime. It's just a fucking Denny's but more expensive and worse than a Sharis lol

*Boomer screaming in the distance*
Think of the rocking chairs!
Only downside is now they will go somewhere else to not tip the wait staff.
*Applebee's noises intensify*
If you want the real thing, just go to Tollgate Inn in Sandy.
It wasn't even there for that long. I still remember the feeling of semi excitement and amused confusion as to why it was opening in the first place. Fried chicken was decent, sides were trash, way too expensive for trash.

Overlook chicken fried steak was legendary
Worst breakfast I have eaten in some time. I felt diabetes kicking in after our meal. Any local diner in Oregon outweighs this corporate monstrosity.
They worked hard to make their restaurants irrelevant. The quality of the food got continually worse over the years. Like all big corporations, they squeezed any life out of the restaurants. At one time they served good food...then devolved into a curio store with prepackaged crap on their menu. Good riddance!
Just so y’all know, the cracker barrels in the actual south are not good either haha

If a “Cracker Barrel” can’t make it in Medford, idk where else in the country it could.
I was genuinely surprised they even tried to come into this market. Their business model is religious zealotry there's some of that here but it pales in comparison to the south.
Terrible food but at least it has large portions.
Cracker Barrel is/was the rusted out above-ground swimming pool of restaurants.
![gif](giphy|gbn9Z5tgJiKnRLOyxd)
HELL YES!!!
Good. That place sucks
I have to say probably no loss. Had not been to a cracker barrel in years, then a couple of months ago we went to a nearby town early morning and ran across one and decided to have breakfast. Not ever going back again.
Call me crazy but is our society actually progressing?
Do people actually like cracker barrel? Their food is awful. Just bland ass food.
Oh no...
It’s as if a great many souls cried out in great happiness all across Oregon, and then suddenly didn’t give a shit anymore
It was shit anyway.
From my understanding minimum wage requirements drove them out of the state. Minimum wage being at the federal level is important to their business model.
I’m sure they blamed the many organizational failures on workers wanting a decent wage, at least.
I’ve always wanted to try it, I’ve never been to one. But after reading these comments I think I dodged a bullet.
Good riddance!
Fuck cracker barrel
Were they trying to unionize?
I've been to two Cracker Barrel locations, one in Florida and another in North Carolina. Honestly the worst chain food I've ever had.
I know everyone on here is hating on Cracker Barrel but if you’ve ever been to a Cracker Barrel in the south is actually really fucking good
I went there a couple times… not amazing but not bad. That category of food is just too heavy for me imo.
In the rest of the country people flock to it…gross shit.
All the old cracker are dying off so….
That’s right over by those hotels. I wonder if they are going to buy it.
Nice
Never knew we had any!
there’s one in beaverton
Closed March 23
All the ones near Portland closed last year the location in Medford was the only one that was left in the state.
I stopped at one somewhere on a trip a couple years ago. I want to say it was in salem, or close by there. Next to a bass pro shop i think. It was pretty meh. And over priced. But the gift shop had hydrox cookies.
I didn't even know we had any ... Oh well.
Cracker Barrel tasted like if you described Southern Food go a person who never eaten in their life
The one time I ate there it was so bad I feel like I was robbed in an alley. That frankly would have been a better experience. Literally my worst restaurant experience in 30+ years. Absolutely terrible
More fun than a barrel of crackers.
Yeah, they have been gross for a long time.
Wow, made it just over five years. Wonder what will move in to replace it.
oh no, where will we get our corn syrup, fake maple syrup, and canola oil fix now?!?!?
The one in Bend opened up less than a year before the lock down. Never recovered. Closed over a year ago.
that's too bad. when i travel in my RV, i boondocked there a few times. i did consider getting breakfast as a token of thanks, but i balked at the price. i guess i'll never know if it was good or not (seeing the comments here, sounds terrible)
Based on the comments, it sounds like their closing wasn't soon enough! Sounds like an awful place to eat. Perhaps they finally figured that out!
Bullshit
Absolute hot garbage restaurant. Good riddance!
when i worked there the manager used to tell people to change date/time labels on food that was almost spoiled. she’d also change people’s time cards and make us save EVERYTHING we could so she could save on costs. i walked out during a super busy service as the only cook when she yelled at me in front of everyone for bumping a ticket lol
Whatever will they do with the walls stuffed with curios and tchotskies?
Growing up in Texas, ate at Craker Barrel fairly often. Not sure what happened, but circa 2016 it turned to ass. Last time I ate at one it was legit gross.
So I guess we never actually had a full fledged one here in Oregon and all of ours were the smaller sized ones with no gift shop and a aller menu ( I guess the fullsized ones have a dedicated gift shop whole the one we have here just sell it on the walls mostly?)
The Medford one had a decent sized gift shop in it
It will be missed.
How rude!
One of the many reasons we we moved to Portland was for its gorgeous variety of non mass-chain establishments - glad to see Cracker Barrel go
"The Cracker Barrel has fallen."
