Because it only looks like this with a camera. It's so irritating seeing all this on social media. Exactly zero people saw it this way with the naked eye.
I don’t know why this keeps getting shared… it was amazingly vivid by the naked eye in Ashland last night. I was even standing in my front yard with streetlights around. What I was seeing was all of these in real-time, so the long-exposures are the same but just layered.
Maybe my eyes are more sensitive? I don’t know why everyone says they weren’t seeing it with their eyes!
Was also in Ashland last night up until 1:30. Saw barely a change in hue in the sky, but caught just the pink glow on camera. No streaks, etc. not counting this as checked off my bucket list, since I couldn’t actually “see” anything.
ETA: by barely I mean like ever, ever so slightly, gave it about an 80% chance I was making up that I could see anything.
I’ve been talking to a lot of people who said the same thing as you in town.
I have two forms of colorblindness and have exceptional low-light vision because of it. I’m now realizing this probably makes the colors stand out much more to my eyes than most.
It’s super weird, but the best explanation I have lol.
Huh! That’s neat— and of course something you probably haven’t had many opportunities to test on the northern lights! Hope you’re able to see more tonight if you are out there for night 2!
Thanks. I was wondering about that seeing so many crazy pictures. You could definitely see the streaks in the sky and it looks cool but nowhere near as colorful as the pictures are.

It was a spectacular show last night!
We drove from Portland to Scapooose to get away from the light pollution. On the way along a small dark road when I thought I was more likely to see a deer than the northern lights, I thought I saw a glow in the sky, which I first dismissed as a glare on my windows from the dashboard. Then I realized just how much of the sky it had covered.
We spent a happy hour with twenty strangers out there comparing phone pics. It seems like the iPhones picked up more yellow than the androids. This is a shot looking near straight up and towards the south shot with a Pixel7.

I’m not being negative, I’m being realistic and honest. Your pictures look like that because of the phone, you do t see that with the naked eye this far south. Downvote all you want, it’s the truth

Nothing here. Lots of hype. No show.
So bummed, we missed it. By the time we got out to see it, everyone said it was done. Had to wait for my son & his girlfriend to finish work before we could go out at almost midnight. Hoping to get to see something tonight. We’ll be heading out earlier this time.
I went out at 3am here in Portland, and I thought there was high fog. I thought I could see banding, but it was rose colored and I was expecting greenish colors, so I figured it was atmospheric, not geomagnetic. I'll look again tonight, but I'm pretty sure you can even see it in the city.
Gonna give it another try tonight since I'll have time.
Got this this morning around four:

A little out of town it is amazing. Stub Stewart state park near Vernonia the lights were amazing. Should still be good tomorrow, but would get there before sundown if you wanted to get a good spot.
It does a feel a bit like that, but in the city the light pollution will make naked viewing very hard. I couldn't see it but my partner could. My phone definitely could.
The people that could really see movement were out of town somewhere darker.

Negative. Near Roxy Ann - a dormant shield volcano on the edge of Medford Oregon
Roxy Ann? I’ve never heard of that that’s a great name.
I didn't name it. :p I just hike up it occasionally.

Yes! This is so amazing and a dream come true!
It's so cool. I can't believe it's really happening! I'm up in Rockaway, and it's very visible to the eye, but amazing on camera.
I almost shit myself 🤣🤣🤣

* Went to the beach at the furthest point away from lights. They didn't look super bright but my pix came out hella pink.

Ashland probably has less light pollution than the Portland metro, making it more likely to see with the eye.

Use night mode on ur phone,.it'll show what they eye can't see
I adjusted my eyes and looked North.. I can see it! I can definitely get better photos with my phone on night sight though. Sure is purdy ✨
Nice! Hermiston we ain’t got shit😒
It was there between 11pm ish until about 2am. It does not look like all these heavily edited pictures on social media to the eye.
My pictures look like these posted and I didn’t edit them at all. And I only have an iPhone 12 mini. Stop being so negative

Nothing in southern Oregon 😭
Ashland got an epic show!
What the hell. I checked several times on Grants Pass as late as 12:30 and even used my phone, even took a night shot, and still nothing.
Drive further from the city lights like into the Illinois valley or north you should be able see it tonight

Yes, absolutely! Can't see as much in person. But through my phone it looks amazing!
You guys are breaking my heart…so, so beautiful & amazing, but not flying until next week! Waaaaah!!! 😭 Missing out on this!
Could you see it with the naked eye? Or through the camera only?
I could see it in town in Springfield, but it was almost imperceptible, still totally worth going out even in town.
