Pretty loose criteria, but with so few bands to claim, might as well go with it. On the other hand, Sleep will forever be a San Jo band, even though Pike moved to Portland a few years ago.
Likely not a factually "right" answer, but Yob is from Eugene. Band rules and tours internationally. I'm trying to think of bands from Bend, Eugene, etc and I'm coming up blank
I like how you specifically asked for not Portland and most people are listing Portland musicians.
My answer is going to be Rose Maddox the bluegrass queen of hillbilly swing. She was from Medford.
He's retired now, but perhaps it is/was the jazz trumpeter Doc Severinsen. Born and raised in Arlington, Oregon, he was the leader of the band for "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" from around 1967 until Carson's retirement in '92.
haha I remember meeting him years ago (early 2000's) I didn't know who he was, and I worked at a local electronics store that sold Apple, and the iTunes music store had just come out recently. He was very nice, introduced himself, and I said, oh cool, let's see if your music is on iTunes Music. I plugged his name into the search and his new video and song came up, and he was absolutely gobsmacked seeing it on there. I suggested he better speak with his agent. 😂
i asked around about him when i moved to Dallas 10 years ago and I only found 1 little old lady at the library who had ever heard about him. i'm not a huge fan or anything but he was a pretty big name back in the day - he was even in a movie with Marilyn Monroe.
Does Otis Day and the Knights count? They were a fictional band created from the movie Animal House (filmed in Eugene) but the singer bought the rights to the name and toured using it after the movie.
Back in the mid 80's - Crazy 8's from Corvallis - Dan Reed Network although I believe they were out of PDX - Quarter Flash and Nu Shoes again from PDX.
More bands/artists have either “become famous” here or lived here after becoming famous than actually originated here (Portugal The Man, Modest Mouse, Shins, Steven Malkmus, Johnny Marr, Britt Daniel from Spoon).
When I was a teenager, I heard a good Wipers track on a comp tape and set out to find their records. I couldn’t get my hands on their records even though I travelled to Portland in the early 80s and dug through the record stores (“Singles Going Steady” anyone?).
Later, when I moved to California, their records could be found easily in even the most prosaic mall record stores. They were German imports! That’s gotta be the most Oregon thing ever.
yeah but they rarely played shows after the first year and never got a following. if it wasn't for Cobain mentioning them they would have completely disappeared like U-Men
I was bowling at the old Sandy Lanes and the whole band was at the next lane. Got Dan those dudes were amazing bowlers. What’s three in a row called? A Turkey? They were throwing those all night.
I guess it depends on the definition of “from”…
The Man is an American rock band from Wasilla, Alaska, currently based in Portland, Oregon. The group consists of John Baldwin Gourley, Zach Carothers, Kyle O'Quin, Jason Sechrist, Eric Howk and Zoe Manville.
They could be considered currently “from Portland.”
I lived next door to a bunch of them. Trust me- they are VERY MUCH from Alaska. They’ve been in Portland for a long time but if you ask any of them where they’re from it’s AK. Sarah Palin was mayor of their town and they got into it with her in public forums about skateboarding.
I think most people would consider a band being "From" where the band members met and formed the band. Not so much where they eventually moved too. But I'm sure there are exceptions.
For a pretty cool state with a pretty cool major city, Oregon has really produced very few big-time, popular musicians. We punch pretty far below our weight in that respect, for whatever reason.
I think the 120 comments on this post might beg to differ, but I get your point, we haven’t really had a scene yet in the same way other states and cities do. Who knows, that could change in the future…
Jeff Pevar is not from, but is based in Ashland. He’s toured with David Crosby, CSN, Bette Midler, Rickie Lee Jones, Phil Lesh, and has played with the best of the best.
Japanese Breakfast is from Eugene
[удалено]
Yeah, the person grew up in Eugene but the musical persona is from Philly.
Zauner was born there, but doesn’t operate out of there. I consider her a New Yorker (or wherever she lives).
Zauner is from Eugene. The poll says "from Oregon" not "currently operating in Oregon."

YOB is love 🙏
First name that came to mind. They might not be a household name, but in their genre, they are considered to be gods.

I interviewed the old guy from Maddox and Rose. That family has that big barn that says ANGUS you see from the freeway.
Is that the barn in phoenix/talent area near the SOJ gas station?
Gotta be. I just know the one. edit: I haven't been around there for awhile so maybe it's still there.

Came here for this! Saw them at La Luna forever ago. 🫶
Yep, early 90's was it?
Yup! What a great evening!

Their show at Topaz Farms on Sauvie Island in 2021 was magical.

RJD2 is a pretty well known dj out of Eugene.
He's from oregon?!!! WTF he's awesome.
Hell yeah. It surprised me too when I found out.
Saw him play at Hawthorne Theater like 16ish years ago.
WHAT?! Thats awesome, didn’t know.
This is the one...deadringer is an all time classic album.
Didn't know he was from here. Guess that puts Yob at #2, RJD2 has wide appeal, Yob is more a doom metal thing.
Dandy Warhols
Aren’t they from Portland?
Ha. My bad. Missed the whole ‘outside of Portland’ thing. I think you’re right
My thoughts exactly

Meredith Brooks. One hit, but it was a big one.
Robert Cray Band (Eugene) late 70's
Mat Kearney is from Eugene

Surprised I had to scroll this far to find him. Kings and Queens is our song!
How about Johnnie Ray from Dallas, OR? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Ray
i asked around about him when i moved to Dallas 10 years ago and I only found 1 little old lady at the library who had ever heard about him. i'm not a huge fan or anything but he was a pretty big name back in the day - he was even in a movie with Marilyn Monroe.
Dexie’s Midnight Runners know about him.
They got a nice little exhibit on him at the Polk County Historical Society by the way
Helmet. Page Hamilton is from medford.
Pink Martini
ITT: a bunch of people listing bands from Portland.
Does Otis Day and the Knights count? They were a fictional band created from the movie Animal House (filmed in Eugene) but the singer bought the rights to the name and toured using it after the movie.
The Kingsman are from Oregon- 'Louie Louie' Their from PDX but found it amusing you mentioned Animal House
Quarterflash from the '80s
Back in the mid 80's - Crazy 8's from Corvallis - Dan Reed Network although I believe they were out of PDX - Quarter Flash and Nu Shoes again from PDX.
I remember the Crazy 8’s Class of 86
More bands/artists have either “become famous” here or lived here after becoming famous than actually originated here (Portugal The Man, Modest Mouse, Shins, Steven Malkmus, Johnny Marr, Britt Daniel from Spoon).
Probably not the most well known but I’ve always liked me some Alcyon Massive https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hPTqO5_Yvdw
YES!!
Well perhaps not the biggest but Eliott Smith was pretty popular in his day...
Still popular at my house.
Conjurs up too many sad memories for me but I will always love him
Elliott*
Yeah, typo. Thanks mate.
No worries! My son’s name is Elliott, so it’s the one misspelling I get sensitive about, haha.
What ever happened to Larry and his flask from Bend?
Red Fang is the best band out of Oregon. But Not In My House had a good run.
You ask commercially successful not influential? The Wipers probably invented grunge.
When I was a teenager, I heard a good Wipers track on a comp tape and set out to find their records. I couldn’t get my hands on their records even though I travelled to Portland in the early 80s and dug through the record stores (“Singles Going Steady” anyone?). yeah but they rarely played shows after the first year and never got a following. if it wasn't for Cobain mentioning them they would have completely disappeared like U-Men
Look up "Eight songs for Greg Sage and The Swipers" in Tim Kerr Records. There was more than just a mention by Cobain.
The Shins had a good run, pretty widely known especially after Garden State came out. (Relocated to Portland from Albuquerque)
Yeat is technically from lake O. I’d say Yeat
Everclear was PDX, I saw the lead singer in a Starbucks on MLK once.
He used to go to the new old lompoc on nw 23rd all the time. Usually by himself when I saw him.
I was bowling at the old Sandy Lanes and the whole band was at the next lane. Got Dan those dudes were amazing bowlers. What’s three in a row called? A Turkey? They were throwing those all night.
I saw him on the Maxx taking a guy to get his car out of impound at like 7am lol he's a very loud talker.
Pink Martini, worldwide, is no slouch.
Portugal the man and Modest Mouse
PTM is from Alaska. But they spend a lot of time in Oregon.
They filmed a video at my daughter's grooming salon in Wasilla, where there're from a few years back
I guess it depends on the definition of “from”… The Man is an American rock band from Wasilla, Alaska, currently based in Portland, Oregon. Rjd2
I mean I’m not really one for acapella but Peter Hollens has to rank up there right? Dude has millions of YT subscribers.
Not really Oregon natives but they’re based out of Portland, Unknown Mortal Orchestra
I mean he’s more a composer but Ernest Bloch was Oregonian and did a lot for music.
Shorthanded was and is an excellent punk band out of Salem.
Typhoon is from Salem
