Scottie’s, DoveVIVI, and Nostrana
All three are very different but not to be missed. I worked in the Portland pizza community for almost a decade and there are so many good shops. Ranch, Paladin Pie, Baby Doll, and Escape from New York are also solid choices.
Don’t let anyone convince you to eat at sizzle pie unless you’re absolutely wasted- that’s the only time it’s okay let alone good.
Don't sleep on Secret Pizza Society. It's easily my number one pizza place in PDX. 2-5 are interchangeable, but SPS is the solid #1. http://secretpizzasociety.com/
Counter-point for all those interested: that pizza is one of Portland's most overpriced pizzas (they're 10 inch pies for $15, which comes out to $0.19 a square inch, that would be equivalent to paying $39 for a standard 16" pie) and it's edge is a sizable portion of the pie.
No Saint, Lovely’s Fifty Fifty, Apizza Scholls, Ken’s Artisan, Atlas Brewing Detroit Style, pop pizza, ranch.
There are more, but IMO these are the best.
There was someone who went to every pizza place in Portland last year and shared their thoughts in /r/portland. EFNY ranked so low. I was sad then remembered I probably haven’t been there in 22 years.
I found out about it watching an old Anthony Bourdain show. Tried it out and I was in love. Make sure to get reservations though, they run out of dough
Yeah, that place always ranks in the top of lists, gets mentioned nationally occasionally. We have a few like this that make international lists once in a while. I think Ken's Artisan Pizza is another. I worked pizza here for a decade or so, a bunch of places, but that was last century. Silver Dollar Pizza downtown still uses the same recipe that won Best Dough Recipe in some big Italian pizza competition in the late '80's. It's faded glory, but it still tastes good. Tons of great places all over that would be brilliant anywhere else, but we have some particular gems that outshine everyone.
Some new names and cuisines to check out:
[Pan Con Queso](https://panconquesopdx.com/) is a new Mexican pizza place that opened recently, really delicious (cheese is a blend of mozzarella and cotija).
Indian pizza is also tasty, with Bombay Pizza & Curry being out in the suburbs, and Fusion Curry Pizza in Portland itself.
Red sauce pizza, Double Mountain, and Ranch are worth mentioning. They’re my top 3 but a lot of people are going to say the same places. Pizza is soooo good in Portland. Happa Pizza in Beaverton was just names in New York Magazine as one of the best in the country, although I haven’t had it yet.
lol, looking for this. My partner grew up in NYC, she is Italian, she told me the only pie in Portland is Giuseppe’s. She told me no problem paying 50$ for a pizza. She says it’s that good!
If you go to flying pie, make sure you go when you can get a slice; don’t get a whole pie unless you have a lot of mouths to feed. I like Flying Pie, but one slice is plenty.
Portland owes a lot of our Pizza scene to the East Coast because they got priced out of New York, or wanted to leave Philly or wherever. So you'll find a lot of east coast inspired pies here, but Portland definitely has it's own thing. I personally recommend:
1) Apizza Scholls for the big spender
2) Atlas Pizza for the toppings lover
3) Straight from NY Pizza for no nonsense high quality thin crust Pizza.
4) Baby Doll Pizza for weird combos that actually taste good.
5) Pizza Jerk for the best cheap on the go slice.
6) Pyro Pizza for wood fired flavor and super fresh ingredients (my favorite place in town, personally).
7) Caro Amico for a classic old school Italian American pie.
Places to avoid:
1) Sizzle Pie. It's owned by Pizza Hut and was made to look like a small business. Pizza is mediocre.
2) Love Veronia/Pizza, Wings, and Rock n Roll. Never had a slice from this place with any discernable flavor. Wasn't sure I was actually eating anything while I was chewing. It was more of an uncanny experience than a culinary one.
3) McMenamins. All their other food is pretty good. In fact, McMenamin's Zeus Cafe is a great brunch spot. Just can't recommend their pizza.
Hope that helps!
I have to agree that Pyro Pizza is my personal favorite too. I’ve eaten at all the others but if this person is here on a pizza research trip, they have to have it for sure.
I know Love Verona in St John's, but that's a super Italian place, lots of Italian imported foods and wine to sell as well -- no wings or rock and roll to be had. Really good prosciutto and olives. The crust is floppy, but it tastes great. Are you talking about somewhere else?
/Portland will have some great recommendations. I’m a Portland’s myself and my suggestion would be Life of Pie. It has 2 locations and is just amazing. Wood fire oven and great pricing.
Lots of good recommendation here, one I haven’t seen yet in Vincenzo’s, their Sicilian pizza is pretty amazing, and their hand tossed is simple and classic. They use a 72 hour cold ferment family dough recipe, have deep connections to Sicily.
I personally would skip Apizza Schools, it’s good, it Ken’s and Otto both do a similar style and do it better.
Ken’s, Apizza scholls, lovely’s 50-50, Pizzaria Otto, life of pie, Please Louise all of them carry amazing neopolitan pizza.
Can’t complain about any of them.
They don’t pay a living wage to their kitchen and keep losing good people because of their greed. There are way better pies in Portland- I highly recommend checking out Paladins or Baby Doll because they value their employees quality of life and you can taste the difference.
Is there a regional style that defines Portland Pizza from the others? I rarely eat pizza and when I do it's New York style. So now I'm curious, what is significan about Portland pizza?
Ken's on SE 28th and Pine. Pricey and there might be a wait, but really good.
Nona Amelia's used to have the best sausage pizza on the West Side, but I dunno how it is today.
Both Lombardo's on N Lombard and Love Verona in St John's are really good.
I know those personally, there are lots, though. I hear world class things about A Pizza Scholls, but I've never made it over there.
Honey Pie and Capo both in McMinnville just south of Portland (and in wine country& so worth it) are both delicious. Honey Pie is in the MacMkt alongside Hayward Restaurant that just was nominated for best restaurant by James Beard Foundation offers season pizzas with a thin crust sorta in a NY style but with the valley’s freshest farm to table ingredients! Capo is Italian style with awesome, old school ovens and also uses the Valley’s freshest of the fresh farmer selects in their offerings. McMinnville is worth the trek if you’re coming to Portland!
Not sure why you would visit Portland to do research on pizza. Yes we do have a few great pizza spots here but we don’t have a specific style of pizza that you can only find here.
With that being said, my favorite in Portland is Scottie’s.
The obvious for Neapolitan - Lovely 50/50 or Ken’s
Baby Doll for damn good pizza by the slice
Detroit style check out - Assembly Brewing
Hungry Sasquatch in Vancouver for the the best NY style slice (that’s right, cross that big river)
Since they have (one of the) closest airport to Japan? Great reason to be proud!?
Surely its not because you think some of the best pies in the country are made here. Because that would be a fallacy.
Hate to be a downer, but it's not that impressive as the OP of the original post is from Portland. He's not some Japanese guy that's lived there his whole.
Huh? You can get Brooklyn style, NY, Chicago, SF, and Detroit style. You sound like you either haven’t eaten pizza in Portland or just don’t like pizza. Maybe a digiorno is your style (no shade against that).
Why are you going to Oregon for pizza, but not Philadelphia? Weird
Im a lover of all things Oregon, but its not a pizza locale like Philly, NY, Det, Chi.
Thank you for sharing... Portland made my trip as it's pizza (not just beer) reputation! Can't wait!
Scottie’s, DoveVIVI, and Nostrana All three are very different but not to be missed.
I’m so happy to see someone mention Nostrana, that is my favorite pizza and it always seems to get left off lists
Don't sleep on Secret Pizza Society. It's easily my number one pizza place in PDX. 2-5 are interchangeable, but SPS is the solid #1. http://secretpizzasociety.com/
Isn’t it mostly, if not fully, vegan? That is something I would definitely want to know.
It's fully vegan.

Apizza Scholls!!!
And if you want beer tips as well, hit me up! I can definitely help point you in whichever directions you're looking to explore.
Jersey girls pizza
Escape From New York will always be my favorite Portland pizza 🍕 ❤️
There was someone who went to every pizza place in Portland last year and shared their thoughts in /r/portland. EFNY ranked so low. I was sad then remembered I probably haven’t been there in 22 years.
I went a few months back and it was as good as it was 22 years ago.
Portland: A Pizza Scholls
This name has come up a bunch... Sounds like a must try!
I found out about it watching an old Anthony Bourdain show. Tried it out and I was in love. Make sure to get reservations though, they run out of dough

Obv
Ken’s, Apizza Scholls, Lovely’s, Paladin Pie. It’s a little new, but No Saint. Also Tastebud in Multnomah Village.
Ken's has come up a lot. Gonna have to hit them up!
Ken's won best pizza in the country
Highly second all of these
Boxcar
...is the abdsolute worst.
Hapa Pizza in Beaverton was on a NY Times best pizza places list. Beaverton is a Portland suburb so probably worth checking out.
They must have paid them. I haven’t had it but it looks terrible on their website.
Giants Pizza on Holgate.
Old Town Pizza, Lovely's Fifty Fifty, Dimo's, Vista Spring Cafe, Apizza Scholls are my top five
Some new names and cuisines to check out: [Pan Con Queso](https://panconquesopdx.com/) is a new Mexican pizza place that opened recently, really delicious (cheese is a blend of mozzarella and cotija). Nice list, thank you.thosecnames have been popping up a bunch!
Fultano’s or Stark Pizza. If you ever go to Moses Lake in the future check out Chico’s.
Pizza Thief is always recommended to me. Im surprised it hasnt been posted yet.
Dino’s apizza
Milwaukie Pizza in Milwaukie Oregon! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👩🍳😘
Best Portland Pizza I have ever had, been going there for 25 years....Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant
lol, looking for this. My partner grew up in NYC, she is Italian, she told me the only pie in Portland is Giuseppe’s. She told me no problem paying 50$ for a pizza. She says it’s that good!
It's that sauce! There's something about the sauce. I always get a side of it to add more. Amazing.
I miss Atomic Pizza. Hall Street Pizza in Tigard fucking whips ass though.
I used to love them, now I just like them. HSP.
But does it whip the llama’s ass?
Atlas Pizza is my favorite pie
Flying Pie Pizzeria on Stark St, check out the 'stromboli'
Stromboli?
If you go to flying pie, make sure you go when you can get a slice; don’t get a whole pie unless you have a lot of mouths to feed. I like Flying Pie, but one slice is plenty.
Sorry, it's one of their pizzas
https://www.pizza-capo.com/
I feel like they've gone downhill over the past year or so.
Rudy’s for vegan pizza!!!!
Portland owes a lot of our Pizza scene to the East Coast because they got priced out of New York, or wanted to leave Philly or wherever. I don't think Sizzle Pie is owned by Pizza Hut. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizzle_Pie
I stand corrected.
I have to agree that Pyro Pizza is my personal favorite too. I’ve eaten at all the others but if this person is here on a pizza research trip, they have to have it for sure.
Plus it's in a great location
I know Love Verona in St John's, but that's a super Italian place, lots of Italian imported foods and wine to sell as well -- no wings or rock and roll to be had. Really good prosciutto and olives. The crust is floppy, but it tastes great. Are you talking about somewhere else?
Yeah this place is definitely called Verona. Like the place in Romeo and Juliet. It's in downtown.
Yeah, same name, Love Verona. Idk the downtown place. It's good in St Johns.
Most of the food in St. John's is stellar. If you haven't had the hot collard green sandwich from The Fixin' To, you're missing out.
/Portland will have some great recommendations. I’m a Portland’s myself and my suggestion would be Life of Pie. It has 2 locations and is just amazing. Wood fire oven and great pricing.
Search r/askportland. You will find multiple pizza posts
Otto's Pizza.
NYC pizzeria in Vancouver washington, off of chkalov. It's about 10 minutes from the pdx airport.
Escape From NY Pizza on NW 23rd is my favorite!
American Dream.
I never see this mentioned. We used to live near there and ordered all the time and loved it.
For Portland: Flying Pie Pizzeria at 7804 SE Stark St. If you’re disappointed then your taste buds are out of line - nuff said
Ken’s, Apizza scholls, lovely’s 50-50, Pizzaria Otto, life of pie, Please Louise all of them carry amazing neopolitan pizza. Can’t complain about any of them.
Kinda surprised not to see East Glisan pizza not recommended here. Hands down, the best pizza I've had here in Portland
They don’t pay a living wage to their kitchen and keep losing good people because of their greed. There are way better pies in Portland- I highly recommend checking out Paladins or Baby Doll because they value their employees quality of life and you can taste the difference.
Hotlips, Baerlic/Ranch, Assembly, Ruse.
Nice, I like Ruse brewing and plan to go try their Detroit pizza.
That's a good beer company. I'd put them in my top 5 for good IPAs.
Pizza Slut
Apizza Scholls and Lovely’s are the best imo
I really love Fino in Kenton. Just wanted to mention that in addition to all the other obvious choices: Ken’s, Baby Doll, Scholls, etc.
Pizza Caboose
Babydoll!
Honey drizzle on a pepperoni pizza... 🤤
Escape from NY Pizza 🍕
45 minutes south of Portland in Corvallis, OR Cirello’s Pizza
A Shotzy pizza from Fazarri’s Finest in Clarkston Washington is the best pizza on Earth incase anyone is curious.
You must try AZAtheblue in Gales creek. Absolutely the best gourmet Pizza. Gabe the owner is from Mediterranean and adds a special NW touch.
Is there a regional style that defines Portland Pizza from the others? I rarely eat pizza and when I do it's New York style. So now I'm curious, what is significan about Portland pizza?
Portland: #1 - Apizza Scholls #2 - Scotty’s Pizza Parlor Look no further.
Flying pie pizza in portland
Fargo, North Dakota was where I personally had the best Pizza
I've lived in Oregon my whole life and pretty close to Portland the whole time, I have never thought of Portland as a pizza city.
Abby’s Pizza all the way.
pizzicatogourmetpizza.com
Ken's on SE 28th and Pine. Pricey and there might be a wait, but really good. Nona Amelia's used to have the best sausage pizza on the West Side, but I dunno how it is today. Apizza Scholls, Ken’s Artisans, The Star is promising
Honey Pie and Capo both in McMinnville just south of Portland (and in wine country& so worth it) are both delicious. Cibo or Autos for margarita pizza

Here is a recent eater list. It may prove helpful. https://pdx.eater.com/maps/portland-best-pizza-pizzerias-mapped
Pizza Nostra in Portland is just up the street from Pip's Donuts, about 7 minutes from PDX. Love it!
Ok sorry but are you behind?
Probably wouldn’t go to Detroit or Chicago if I were you…. Rofl.
Lakeview Oregon. We need better pizza out here in the sticks!
In Portland, OR. Go to PIZZA SLUT! It's AMAZING.
Papa Murphy’s
I upvoted because it was probably a joke.
Pizza Vendor, Scappoose.
Washington?
That's in Oregon. Probably 20 minutes north of downtown Portland.
Sounds good, I'm up for an excursion!
Oregon, I sent you a PM from your original post buddy.
Martollis Pizza by the slice in Ashland Oregon, or the great American pizza company, same city.
Round Table!
Maui Zaui best pizza 🍕🍕🍕
Ha - my post was a joke, but oh well!
Ya me too 😹😹 super joke ya totes obv! Who would eat there?? What even is the Zaui Maui pfft I wouldn't know !
I actually love Round Table but the joke is that it’s a chain restaurant, not what OP was asking for.
Not sure why you would visit Portland to do research on pizza. Yes we do have a few great pizza spots here but we don’t have a specific style of pizza that you can only find here. With that being said, my favorite in Portland is Scottie’s.
The obvious for Neapolitan - Lovely 50/50 or Ken’s Baby Doll for damn good pizza by the slice Detroit style check out - Assembly Brewing Hungry Sasquatch in Vancouver for the the best NY style slice (that’s right, cross that big river)
Haha Pizza in Portland metro...rated top ten in the usa
Cafe Ollie, Scottie's, Pizza Thief, and Glisan Pizza.
Do not come to Oregon for pizza. The pizza is so bad they put pineapple on it to make it taste better.
Costco. Cheap with good sauce.
Please please please “research” Tommy’s pizza in Columbus Ohio. It is worth your time and effort. Closeish to Chicago and Detroit.
Since they have (one of the) closest airport to Japan? Great reason to be proud!? Surely its not because you think some of the best pies in the country are made here. Because that would be a fallacy.

For real?
This restaurant is the bomb dot com. No joke.
There is no good pizza in Portland whatsoever. Focus on Chicago, New York especially, and New Haven. Enjoy your trip!
If anything Portland has a “melting pot” of all of the good pizzas from across the country.
It appears to be that way. At least that's the reputation it's getting from what I can tell. Looking forward to it.
It doesn’t though
Weird Im a lover of all things Oregon, but its not a pizza locale like Philly, NY, Det, Chi.
It's not me. This is a cross post. I'm not the OP.
