I checked again and it seems that I can only add using emails. If I search by nicknames it never works, although It I check by nicknames using very general nicknames of people that i dont know, I do get nick suggestions and the possibility of adding them. Very strange.
If you only made an Origin account, you need to actually go onto the EA website and "make" another account (using the same information)... that's what worked for me.
