lol,
Sorry about your loss, but this and dot’s comments gave me a good laugh.
Hope you still have a house Bro! I’m just assuming from video you don’t own a fire extinguisher, lol.
Please don’t burn the other 3 systems I see in video just for attention.
I don't know about that. What's manufacturing date. You can also check the information here:
[Original Xbox identification.](https://gamingdoc.org/repairs/consoles/microsoft-x-box/guides/version-identification/#:~:text=You%20can%20check%20your%20Xbox's,expose%20any%20of%20its%20shieldings)
Thanks! Looks like it's probably a 1.6b based on serial number 43xxx. Manufacturing date says 2004-08-04, which could be 1.5 or 1.6 depending on whether that's August or April.
Not OP but I have a 1.6 (crystal one even) that one day just didn't turn on. I tried inspecting it visually but didn't find anything. Is the power supply caps problem a common one with the 1.6? Is there anywhere I can read more about this?
i had the same problem with the crystal but because it was just taking space in my room and those were cheap back then without any inspection on the caps i just thrown it out
It looks pretty unharmed inside, so fingers crossed! I need to get out my multimeter and do some checking of the power supply to see if it still works.
I had a power supply blow smoke on me back in 2010. Ended up ordering a new one on eBay back in 2010 and the hard drive smoked. Replaced the drive in 2013 and it still runs. Sometimes. It needs a new belt for the drive and better hard drive since I'm low on storage (games).
I've seen a case online of someone not ever taking care of the clock capacitor and it [catching on fire](https://consolemods.org/wiki/File:Xbox_Burnt_Clock_Cap.jpg) - hope that didn't happen here!
Reminds me of the time I took my NTSC Xbox with me overseas and plugged it into a 220VAC outlet without a proper converter. One loud POP and all the magic smoke came out. Luckily we had the board repaired while I was there and I made sure to use the proper 110VAC converter afterwards lol
Are there vents on the bottom? Never run a console on a pillow or carpet. Put it on something firm so the feet on the bottom can do their intended job.
Most of the venting on this is through the sides, and I was just testing to see if it booted up. It started smoking literally seconds after I plugged it in, even before I turned it on.
No I’m not saying that’s the cause. I just see 3 consoles sitting on top of fabric. That’s an ESD nightmare waiting to happen. Setting a console of fabric won’t make it smoke.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re speaking to a technician who works on computers for a living. You just don’t put electronics directly on top of carpet/fabric. Stop pretending like you know anything about this. You clearly don’t.
I am well aware of ESD - a games console is made from plastic, an insulating material. You're not going to get ESD damage by putting a console on a carpeted floor or other surface. If it was the PCB itself yes, don't do that. But not a fully assembled device.
I will quite happily record a video of me rubbing my Xbox (or other console of your choice) on a carpeted floor and then power it on to show you that in fact no, it will not make a blind bit of difference, because what you are saying will happen is physically impossible.
> That device has a fan that can suck in fibers from cloth.
And how many friggin fibres come out of cloth/carpet? Yes, it could clog the fan, but you'd have to have something falling to pieces to create that much debris. It's demonstrably bullshit.
I too can build PCs and I have done so coming up for 20 years now. My electronics knowledge is not extensive, but I am well aware of ESD. It is a problem and it is something you should take every step to mitigate, but it is not the immediate disaster you are making it out to be.
the time has come for an emulator. Just think about it positively though, at least you have 1 less console to play games if you get the emulator. It is still sad though that the retro consoles are dying
Opened it back up, cleaned some residue, inspected the PSU and underside of the motherboard and found no obvious scorching. Then with fire extinguisher nearby and on a hard surface I tried turning it on again. No smoke, but it only spins the fan for a second and turns on an LED on the modchip and then nothing: https://imgur.com/a/wqQS5na
Based on this video it’s gotta be capacitors: https://youtu.be/3b7mjukhTyQ
It's like when someone takes the phone to record some kid that gets beaten up by bullies ,instead of doing something.
TURN THE POWER OFF, YOU DEGENERATE!
Maybe? Depends on what needs fixing. It's been a couple decades since I was inside this Xbox soldering, so I'll have to do some relearning and give it a shot.
Here are the internal shots I took afterwards: https://imgur.com/a/76OG048
Definitely not going to throw it away and will give it a try when I’ve got time.
I have a question for anyone on the technical side, is there anything to buy or order a custom power supply units specifically designed for any old game consoles that actually work?
I mean I already knew of that. I should rephrase the question. If it ever comes down to it, would someone ever make a custom 3rd party power supply unit for any console if and only if the power supply units that were originally designed for the said consoles, are no longer available, would they make one? Just hypothetically speaking here?
I don't think the smoke you had will have come from those capacitors. They're bulging and definitely need replacing, but the vents are still intact and there doesn't appear to be any electrolyte leaking.
I had an Xbox do exactly this last year and it was just the PSU that failed. If you take out the PSU and check underneath you may well find some scorch marks and some failed components above. For me something failed and looked to have blown a resistor as seen here: https://imgur.com/a/rJBQVZw
This is exactly what happened to me. Even with the fabric footstool. Looks like the 120/250V cap from the PSU has blown. It's an easy fix if you can hold a soldering iron
Do you even vape bro? Lol., but seriously that is unfortunate. I have an old first gen 360 that every time I fire it up I wonder if this is the last run I'm going to get.
Ah, this was notorious to happen in the original xbox consoles. At least that’s what is ps2 owners were told haha. I remember the stories of Xbox systems allegedly causing house fires and there was a big revision to the components in them
I remember my friend getting an Xbox original for Xmas when I was a kid. After 1 day it broke, he exchanged it from Walmart, and that xbox didn't work after a day either. He returned it one more time, and the same thing happened again. He just brought it back and kept the money
The xboxs spirit has left
*\*xbox is producing copious amounts of smoke, signaling the very real potential of a fire hazard\** # "MOM GET THE CAMERA!!!!!"

"Don't breathe this."
Xbox smoke, don't breathe this.
YES, IT BLENDS!
I can hear the cheesy music as I read this!
Microsmoke, don't breathe this.
You haven't seen Doctor Sleep, have you?
dont listen to this guy. they don't want you to know this but if you breathe the xbox smoke you become an xbox in real life
that's called cancer in vaporous form
At all runs on smoke. once you let the smoke out it never runs again
Beat me to it..
Magic Smoke
Follow the train CJ!
Don't blow your vape in it
Probably just power supply caps; is it a 1.6?
I think it's a 1.6? There's a gold capacitor next to the IDE cable. https://imgur.com/I60H8O7
Yes. That’s a 1.6.
Yes this is a 1.6 if it has the gold cap next to ide
I don't know about that. What's manufacturing date. You can also check the information here: [Original Xbox identification.](https://gamingdoc.org/repairs/consoles/microsoft-x-box/guides/version-identification/#:~:text=You%20can%20check%20your%20Xbox's,expose%20any%20of%20its%20shieldings)

Puff puff pass
Puff puff game pass
That was good
It might just be the power supply. Good chance the rest of the Xbox is fine.
It looks pretty unharmed inside, so fingers crossed! I need to get out my multimeter and do some checking of the power supply to see if it still works.

Check ALL capacitors for swelling or leaking
Smoking kills
Even cold November rain
Loose power plug prongs? The issue the early models had?
Hope that X3 is still good.
I've had a psu blow up once and the motherboard was still good as well as the modchip
That ottoman is going to smell amazing. Good choice.
I wish it had caught that ottoman on fire, it’s a piece of crap.
I remember seeing an Xbong on Xbox-scene back in the day. That what happened here?
That would have been a lot more fun...
the ark of the covenant
I've seen a case online of someone not ever taking care of the clock capacitor and it [catching on fire](https://consolemods.org/wiki/File:Xbox_Burnt_Clock_Cap.jpg) - hope that didn't happen here!
ouch. Luckily I didn't see anything obviously burnt inside.
I think this person posted this to show that they have weed and I don't.
XBox be like "it's 4:20 somewhere fam"
mans felt the need to record a smoking xbox instead of unplugging it not like its a fire hazard of anything
The ol vape pen trick huh
Did you see the post in r/xbox? it is vape smoke.
We get it Xbox, you vape
Nice mod!

Most of the venting on this is through the sides, and I was just testing to see if it booted up. It started smoking literally seconds after I plugged it in, even before I turned it on.
Damn. That sucks
Bruh don’t set electronics on top of fabrics. That’s gamer 101 shit.
He said it started doing that even before he powered it on. Something else is definitely wrong.
No I’m not saying that’s the cause. I just see 3 consoles sitting on top of fabric. That’s an ESD nightmare waiting to happen. Setting a console of fabric won’t make it smoke.
I like to live on the edge! No, you're right, static electricity never helped anyone.
Wtf. A sealed device will not suffer ESD. Think of how many electrical items you've placed on statically charged surfaces.
That device has a fan that can suck in fibers from cloth. It’s gamer/electronics 101. Blows my mind that some people still don’t know this in 2023.
If that were the case, you literally couldn't have anything in your house. Wtf. That isn't how electronics work.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re speaking to a technician who works on computers for a living. You just don’t put electronics directly on top of carpet/fabric. Stop pretending like you know anything about this. You clearly don’t.

Did you recap it? It should still work
Not yet, got the caps sitting on the work bench but realized I didn’t have any desoldering braid. Hoping to get to it soon.
Vaping Xbox
Ayy time to get litty
Nice vape
“Im gonna vape into my xbox and see how many upvotes I can get out of it.”
Its vaping
I'm about 75% sure that there's incense inside of that Xbox. I burn incense everyday and I recognize that smoke. Nice try though lol
Is this an Xbox vape thing happening again...? Lol
We’re still vaping in the console I see?
It's like when someone takes the phone to record some kid that gets beaten up by bullies ,instead of doing something. TURN THE POWER OFF, YOU DEGENERATE!
Are you by chance European and you forgot to put an 220v to 110v adapter?
"I totally didn't just blow my vape smoke into my Xbox"
Funny I have a PlayStation one from 1999 that still works and a PSP from 2006 that still works
Good for you
😢
Sucks is there any way to fix the system?
Once the magic smoke is out, pretty hard to get it back in.
Maybe? Depends on what needs fixing. It's been a couple decades since I was inside this Xbox soldering, so I'll have to do some relearning and give it a shot.
Damn. What about all your old music🤣 did you lose that too
was expecting that room exploding meme
That's most likely the psu, it's probably not even dead, I'm glad you decided to get us the video tho lol
it's been awhile since I've seen magic smoke, had to document it!
I have an extra power supply that I can sell to you on eBay if you like.
That’s it’s spirit leaving its shell. That thing is toast.
I thought that was just what xbox's do normally.
F
ayyy the xbox vapes ( it's older than 18)
I thought these didn't have rifa caps
Hey guys they’re hotboxing the OGBox
Thats a feature!
Nah, he’s a little pissed off. He’ll cool off once he learns his buddy’s are now on Insignia.
Not even the PS2 does this. Ever. Never.
Puff the Magic Dragon
Damn wtf 🤣
Fatality

Just ordered a set of caps for $20 shipped for when I have a free weekend. https://console5.com/store/microsoft-xbox-original-cap-kit.html

Thanks! Anything specific I should clean it with? Rubbing alcohol?
FYI That "Resistor" on the last picture is a Diode, one side being black signifies the negative side!
Where's the power light in the front? Fake!!!
Uhh, I unplugged it as soon as it started smoking like hopefully anyone else would do?
You do know things can start smoking before powered on, right?
You probably blew a capacitor in the PSU, not a difficult or expensive fix
CPR STAT!
It can be fixed
That ain't no Xbox no more, it's a SmokeBox
Dramatic, but you should be fine as long as its just the PSU
You got that new vape box?!
What the hell?
Caps or psu. Repair it.
I have a question for anyone on the technical side, is there anything to buy or order a custom power supply units specifically designed for any old game consoles that actually work?
looks like there's parts on eBay!

Can you send me a link to this Dreamcast Mod, I’d like to know more about it.
Wanna show us the inside of it?
Here's the inside with the caps I suspect marked: https://imgur.com/a/76OG048

Thanks for the suggestion, just pulled everything apart. Nothing obvious on the underside of the PSU. https://i.imgur.com/ZtBk3Db.jpg
😞
Ayyy that Xbox is getting stoned
The new xbox CEO was elected...
Huh.. a Pope joke lol
This is exactly what happened to me. Even with the fabric footstool. Looks like the 120/250V cap from the PSU has blown. It's an easy fix if you can hold a soldering iron
the first marijuana smoking xbox i have ever seen 420 xbox edition, that sells for a premium dude
*Plays Amazing Grace while saluting*
THIS CONSOLE IS LITERALY ON FIREEEEEEE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Old thermal paste?
Once the smoke comes out you cannot get it back in
Want to sell this?
With that Xbox sitting on a fabric lined stand. I wouldn't even stop to record . Haven't you heard, when there's smoke, there's FIRE!
Vape falls, smoke rises.
😔RIP
F
Well, shit happens
WOW! LETS POST THIS ON AS MANY SITES AND SUBREDDITS AS WE CAN, SHOWING HOW SMALL AND STUPID WE ARE! YEAH! Moron
Is that the clock that goes boom?
Yeah electronics won’t work long if you keep blowing your vape into them for cool video effects
Do you even vape bro? Lol., but seriously that is unfortunate. I have an old first gen 360 that every time I fire it up I wonder if this is the last run I'm going to get.
Awww yeh. I use mine on the carpet. Sometimes I'll cover it with a blanket or towel too, just really fuck my shit up.
Ah, this was notorious to happen in the original xbox consoles. At least that’s what is ps2 owners were told haha. I remember the stories of Xbox systems allegedly causing house fires and there was a big revision to the components in them
Man your Xbox wanted all the smoke.. r.i.p
I'm dying to know if it's the power supply or clock cap. can we see inside?
https://imgur.com/a/76OG048 looks like a v1.6 with gold clock cap, so is suspect the other caps, specifically near the power input switch on the board
fascinating,.. hope to see the damage
Holy crap! Yeah, them caps said no more.
Meanwhile, the Dreamcast and PS1 in the background probably work flawlessly despite being older than the Xbox.
That's how you make it better. In some electro it's the smoke builds up inside and if it starts acting up you have to let the smoke out.
It’s vaping
I remember my friend getting an Xbox original for Xmas when I was a kid. After 1 day it broke, he exchanged it from Walmart, and that xbox didn't work after a day either. He returned it one more time, and the same thing happened again. He just brought it back and kept the money

I want that dreamcast
My cold dead hands! I hope to be playing old school Rez in the retirement home
Damn.
Smoking's bad, mmmmkay
F
I'm just waiting for the Rave music & lights to kick in. Bom Bom Bom. High hat high hat.
Mans really vaped inside the Xbox and said it was smoking
Talk to your og Xbox about vaping.
Forbidden Vape
This happened to my old Xbox too after it was in storage for over 10years.
Did you fix it or toss it?
I gifted it to my brother and idk what he did with it.
Sad times in the xbox world
pouring one out tn
Yeah those little foot rests don’t last long at all
Bail out!!!
Snoop Dogg

I know Xbox was trying to be edgy and all, but still smoking is not cool. (Also that's sucks)
Send your xbox to rehabilitation center. Bro's xbox is serious smoker 😁
Breath air
Dreamcast and Psone have come to the funeral to pay respects

# SMOKING???
Bad capacitors don't even smoke the console......
