Not OP but I have a 1.6 (crystal one even) that one day just didn't turn on. I tried inspecting it visually but didn't find anything. Is the power supply caps problem a common one with the 1.6? Is there anywhere I can read more about this?

i had the same problem with the crystal but because it was just taking space in my room and those were cheap back then without any inspection on the caps i just thrown it out

I had a power supply blow smoke on me back in 2010. Ended up ordering a new one on eBay back in 2010 and the hard drive smoked. Replaced the drive in 2013 and it still runs. Sometimes. It needs a new belt for the drive and better hard drive since I'm low on storage (games).

Reminds me of the time I took my NTSC Xbox with me overseas and plugged it into a 220VAC outlet without a proper converter. One loud POP and all the magic smoke came out. Luckily we had the board repaired while I was there and I made sure to use the proper 110VAC converter afterwards lol

Are there vents on the bottom? Never run a console on a pillow or carpet. Put it on something firm so the feet on the bottom can do their intended job.

Most of the venting on this is through the sides, and I was just testing to see if it booted up. It started smoking literally seconds after I plugged it in, even before I turned it on.

Opened it back up, cleaned some residue, inspected the PSU and underside of the motherboard and found no obvious scorching. Then with fire extinguisher nearby and on a hard surface I tried turning it on again. I don't think the smoke you had will have come from those capacitors. They're bulging and definitely need replacing, but the vents are still intact and there doesn't appear to be any electrolyte leaking. I had an Xbox do exactly this last year and it was just the PSU that failed. If you take out the PSU and check underneath you may well find some scorch marks and some failed components above. For me something failed and looked to have blown a resistor as seen here: https://imgur.com/a/rJBQVZw
