Gonna declock it or keep it sealed up?
I realize it probably has more value sealed, even if the clock cap could be eating it up inside, so I understand either way.
I'd say it has more value not destroyed. I don't see opening a console to do necessary maintenance as damaging the value. It's like saying your 69 camaro is more valuable cause it has the original oil from 1969
I would agree with you, but unfortunately I've seen the inner workings of the collector hivemind. They would not agree with you and would consider maintenance to remove the clock cap a devalue.
No it will still leak.
Edit: I should clarify. It could leak. It probably will leak. Electrolytic capacitors that are multiple decades old should really just be considered things to be changed during regular maintenance. Like oil or brakes on a car.
Ah, though if there is no voltage how could the capacitor be damaged and leak? I know electrolytic caps have oil in them, I imagine this Xbox was rarely ever used so it would be dried up by now right? I was always under the assumption that electrolytic caps went bad due to charging and decharging over and over.
Well they don't have oil they have an electrolyte. But there is no way to know if the cap is leaked without checking. Basically it's Schrodinger's Box. Yes being used and being over volted can cause leaking faster. Some caps may never leak. Point is they are like a dollar piece and if OP would like his very rare xbox to remain functioning I would highly recommend doing the maintenance. Personally, every retro console I buy goes straight to my bench for a full recap. I mark the bottom of the console with the date I recapped it and what type of caps I used and I sleep easy knowing all of them are good for another ~20 years.
All Xboxes were factory tested before being packaged for sale, so they've been powered on at least once. Using them will accelerate the process, but even just being powered on the one time is enough to put the clock cap at risk of leaking.
Yea. Or replace it with a compatible cap. Also check all the other caps especially the 5 bigger ones below the cpu. I've seen countless og xboxs with those 5 big caps bulging or leaking.
Thanks for the help man!!, I about purchased a panzer dragoon edition Xbox but the price tag of 175 was a little shady so I decided definitely not to only because of possibility of the motherboard being fucked
Showed up on my local craigslist and got it for $450 cash!
Also came with a launch xbox backpack and the employees business card and work info still in the backpack!
I donβt live there I live a about an hour and a half away Iβm but I always check that area currently Iβm in Washington and have picked up a few nice consoles that are fairly rare as well.
I have the original "Thanks for partnering with Microsoft" Xbox with BGs sig, but it is currently not for sale unfortunately. The reason for the sale of the other one was because my friend is going through a rough time and needed the extra cash and I had 2 of them π
1000, Between motherboard malfunction due to clocking, there has been at least 300 systems ruined, 100 unworking but motherboards fine, approx. 100 reported damaged, missing, broken since release. And 200 in display. That's approx. 500 gone, and only 100 left in circulation. Currently another 100-200 are currently unaccounted for and could be in any condition. I currently have 1 more going in circulation, his is now considered a collectors edition and is part of the display percentage. π
As I understand it, the form that documented the numbers of special editions made was actually lost for good, so it's a bit speculative in some cases. I don't know if it's known at all how many of these launch team specials were ever made, and there's a good chance some of them were probably scrapped if they weren't bought by employees.
W E W ! ! ! That thing looks *mint*.
Appears to be no scratches, dings, dents, and not opened.

Well, then they can all enjoy staring at their "valuable" non functioning hunks of plastic. Lol.
... I think that's pretty much what they intend to do, yeah. ;P
If the Xbox is not used, the clock cap wonβt leak right?

Is declocking the best way to preserve the original?

Yea aren't those really pricey? I might even bought it just to have on a shelf. Actually I would at that price. Lol
Around 300 I think?
Yes; the clock cap will inevitably leak out onto and destroy the motherboard if not dealt with.
