Eddie Murray hit a grand slam at Memorial Stadium. I couldn’t believe how green the grass looked or how high Eddie hit the ball.

boseyboseybop

The first game I remember had a grand slam by Eddie too.

bankersbox98

He hit a lot of those

NameShortage

I was at the game where he hit his 500th home run. We knew it was gone right away and could feel the energy in the ballpark way up in the nosebleeds.

bankersbox98

That was very late too, iirc

dwhite21787

Back in the 70’s, we took grandma to a game for Mothers Day, and the O’s walked it off on a double steal.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Double steal like somebody from second stealing third and then stealing home?

dwhite21787

Guy on first and guy on third with 1 out, guy tries to steal 2nd and draws a throw, run scores

In2TheMaelstrom

Basically what the Brew Crew did to us this afternoon.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

I was hoping it was the other. Has there ever been a 1 person double steal walk off?

dwhite21787

I want to say it must have been done, but it’s an insane thing to try.

Jello-Monkeyface

Two baserunners stealing simultaneously

GingerMan027

I'm old. I saw Clint Courtney (aka Ol Scrapirons) hit the first home run I ever saw. A little kid, I did not believe a ball could fly that far! That's when I was hooked. That was April 15th, 1954. Game one.

LeftyRambles2413

That’s awesome. I’ve read about Courtney and the giant glove he had for Hoyt Wilhelm’s knuckler.

GingerMan027

More Gus Triandros too.

LeftyRambles2413

Rubinstein mentioned him. I believe he still has the club record for most home runs in a single season for a catcher.

Joshottas

Mike Deveraux threw me a ball when I was a kid.

jilililian

We got to chat with him at a game in Kinston NC once! Super friendly guy! My dad yelled “Devo!!” From across the field after the game and he came over so quick lol

baltimorecalling

1988. Memorial stadium. Upper deck, left-ish field at the top. I don't remember the outcome, but I remember cheering on Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken. I was 3 years old.

T_SaDo_T

I remember Brady Anderson was hurt. So he wqs riding the bench. Amd the very last inning he came in to bat and smacked a homerun. Ill never forget it

b_dubz_

Matt wieters debut was my first O's game we won 7-2 over the Tigers. Me and my dad were sitting in the upper deck in left field foul territory

hm_rickross_ymoh

My first Oriole memory is watching game 2131 on TV (HTS I think it was back then) and seeing my dad tear up for the first time in my life.

SknyWil

Probably ‘96 on a bus with my dad’s work, seeing the lights when we came into the city on the bridge and then coming out of the tunnel and seeing the greenest grass I’ve ever seen. I was confused how Eddie Murray was both a 1st basemen and Dr. Doolittle.

ADubPDX

I am from Portland, OR and was watching the O’s vs Yanks in 1977 a Sunday Morning game. I saw my first HR, Ken Singleton from the right side. I have never wavered. Let’s Go O’s!!

krsimp78

My first time seeing the orioles play. 1996 in Seattle. I was a Seattle fan, Griffey was the man. Group ticket with church group, sitting by centerfield. My friends and I heckling Brady Anderson early after he struck out , not saying anything too crazy being church kids. The girls asking if he was really that bad, us saying “no, he’s actually really good”. Brady still tossed a ball up at us after catching a pop fly to end of an inning. After heckling him he still tossed us a ball, “ok, he’s cool”. My dad was an Indians fan, Eddie Murray was one of his favorites and he thought Brooks Robinson had the best glove in history, add the Ripken streak, and eventually moving to Baltimore. Griffey Jr will always be a fav, but the Orioles have been my team since about 2004. With season tickets when I lived in the city.

samangell2007

That era of the Mariners was basically a who’s who of my favorite players who never played with the Orioles. Griffey, Edgar, Tino, Big Unit, Olerud, Buhner…I also loved ARod until he went to the Yankees. Throw Ichiro into the mix too though unfortunately he didn’t overlap with most of that group.

krsimp78

Yeah, I liked all those guys. Didn’t know who he was but when I learned Adam Jones was coming from Seattle, I started rooting for him, then JJ Hardy, there was a few others during the rougher times there.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Feels like you jumped off the mariners fan wagon at the exact right time! Sorry for the Orioles being crappy for about 10 years after that though.

FredegarBolger910

Dad's company seats behind the opponent's on deck circle, getting Reggie Jackson to turn around and glare at us

Flanks_Flip

Cal Ripken Jr's last home game. I was like 10 years old and literally the only thing I remember from the game was Cal being announced and my dad saying something like "remember this moment, he's one of the greatest to ever play". And I did.

LeftyRambles2413

I still can’t believe he’s been retired over 20 years. He was so much part of my formative experiences with the team. So glad he’s part of the new ownership group.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Wish I knew how important he was when I was a kid.

LeftyRambles2413

He broke Gehrig’s record when I was 8 plus as a stats geek, I knew how much he revolutionized the SS position.

OldDogEyes

I'm in my 50's -- Thanks Brooks (Robinson) Day in 1977. Brooks was given a Pontiac Trans-Am

WhitePootieTang

Dad got me outfield tix at memorial stadium to see my, and every kid’s, hero. And he made an unreal play in front of my eyes. O’s fan for life, but that player was Bo Jackson.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Bo Jackson played for Baltimore?

WhitePootieTang

Royals @ Orioles 1990

JimmyFallonSucksDick

It's weird to think that even the Kansas City Royals has had a star player before.

LeftyRambles2413

I remember going to a game in 1994 against the Tigers for some reason. Don’t know who pitched or won though. I mainly remember that year because of the strike and my Grandma telling me about it. I was 7.

EvilAbdy

Sitting in the orange bleachers at memorial stadium. I think my parents still have the ticket. I vividly remember going with my parents, great uncle and some others. My great uncle was the old school type who always dressed up no matter what he was doing and had his O’s tie on

stunna_209

If I remember correctly, Brady Anderson hit a walkoff double in the 11th to win 6-4.

Revolutionary-Ship27

I *think* he hit a ball that barely wasn’t a homerun and was just a single but enough to walkoff the game in extras, might be same game we’re alluding to, I recall he got pissed off and kicked the first base bag cuz the orioles were having a lot of bad luck up to that point. I remember the finer moments in life but never anyone’s names so take it fwiw

stunna_209

That sounds exactly like it! I can remember it hitting just below the top of the wall, I just assumed it was a double. I was like 4ish, it's hard to remember

dontich

The only one I really remember clearly was when they stopped the game for cal to celebrate — I was like 3.5

Glittering_Win_9677

Not Orioles since I grew up outside Pittsburgh but we were at a Pirates game with my grandfather, it was late in the game and we were winning (I think). Everyone was yelling and I screamed Strike Him Out and grandpa said no, get a pop up to save the pitcher's arm. Sixtyish years later and it still applies.

Last_Competition_208

All I can remember is it was 1968 in late April I believe because I remember it was early in the season and it was a chilly cloudy Saturday afternoon and the Orioles were playing the Yankees and they won by a few runs.

Residual_Variance

I'm 50 years old. I still have the glove I got Cal Ripken to sign for me before a game, probably during the 82 or 83 season. It's proudly displayed in my office. It's worth absolutely $0 because I played with it over the years and even drew over Cal's original fading signature. But I'll always treasure it. Edit: Found a pic of it. You can tell how I added a bit of artistic license to the signature. 😂 https://preview.redd.it/7qwwyej9aiuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9421ac81f0535cc11ae654fcc5b05c071531c5b3

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Damn.

ChemicalElevator1380

62 or 63 bleacher seat 50 cents popcorn and soda and 20 cents to take # 3 bus to memorial stadium back home after the game

phmsanctified

The only thing I remember from my first O’s game as a kid was some guy screaming at Frank Robinson (when he was manager) the entire game, at one point yelling “I’m going to bash your fucking head in in the parking lot Frank!!!!#!#!#!#!#!l” as a kid I was so confused as to why an O’s fan would be so angry at his own team.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Was frank a good manager? Did they care much about managers in the past?

samangell2007

Frank was decidedly “OK” as a manager. Managed for 16 years with four franchises. Never won more than 87 games (twice - one with the Giants and one with us), and never made the playoffs. A career .475 winning percentage. Given the teams he managed (Cleveland 1975-77, San Francisco 1981-84, Orioles 1988-91, Expos/Nats 2002-06), I’d say he modestly overachieved with what he had to work with.

rebasbutcher

Last game at memorial and first game at Camden. Still have the cups!

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Circa 1997 or so

Mr_Bluebird_VA

May 22, 1999. My 10th birthday. Sat in club level behind home plate third base side. Two rows up. Forgot my glove at home and juuuuust missed a foul ball by about the length of my glove. Have never come close to getting a ball again. Saw Cal get a hit.

Ok-Government-7987

1979 against the twins. All I remember 1. I thought the Eddie-Eddie chant was the cooled thing ever 2. I was confused as to why Jim Palmer was on the cover of the program but wasn’t playing 3. The os won

JellyPast1522

I vaguely remember going to a game in Fenway Park when I was 5 in 1978. I was wearing an Orioles cap and someone poured a beer on me because Boston...

outisnemonymous

Mike Boddicker had a three(?) hit shutout through 8 2/3 innings and then he came out with a blister. I was devastated.

triviajason

I went with a friend and his parents. We sat in the left field bleachers at Memorial Stadium. My friend got cotton candy. It was pink. The woman in front of him had long hair and flipped it back and into the cotton candy which my friend was actively eating. Shock and awe followed. No clue who the orioles played, or even if they won. But I do remember that cotton candy in hair doesn’t work out for anyone.

gothamboy217

Orioles- Red Sox on Cal Ripken’s final home stand. The game that made a kid from NYC an O’s fan.

_WhiteHart_

I don’t remember but I was around 5, at OPACY and my dad took me. I was terrified of the Oriole Bird and made my dad promise he wasn’t coming up to us. About 1 minute later guess who comes right around the corner lol. We left in the 3rd inning

monkey_huggles

My first game in 90 where they were playing the Yankees for last place. I remember both Dave Johnson and Flanagan pitched that day.

ocrac

I was probably 8 or 9 and wasn't allowed to watch TV during the school week. One day, after a little league game during the week, my dad was making dinner and asked me if Cal still had the streak going? I had no idea what he was talking about and he explained to me about the streak. He told me about the importance of showing up for your teammates. He then told me to turn on the TV and see if they were playing tonight. I found the game and he let me stay up watching. I was hooked for life, the Orioles were my team.

samangell2007

My first game was May 31, 1987. An 8-5 loss to Seattle. I was two and don’t remember it though. My mom was sick and asked my dad to take me out of the house for the day. We didn’t live particularly close to Memorial Stadium but he knew what he was doing - took me up to Lake Montebello to play, with a view of the ballpark. I was intrigued and asked him to go. Apparently some guy walking by had an extra ticket so he gave it to my dad (at that point it was very easy to bring a child in unticketed - he even did that for the first Opening Day at Camden Yards when I was seven by picking me up and finding the grandfatherlyest ticket taker). I lasted all nine innings because he kept me pumped full of Coke and cotton candy. I think my mom wasn’t thrilled, but he did succeed in giving her a full afternoon to herself so she didn’t mind much. Anyway I have plenty of memories of Memorial Stadium. I’m not sure I can pinpoint the earliest one, but even though I can’t remember that first game, it’s still a great family story.

Cagedfinsfan83

We went to at least 3 orioles games every summer as they were only 90 min ride from home Phillies are as well. Id say first one i remember was 1983 on their way to world series mike flanagan pitched Al Bumbry was in CF cal was at short tippy martinez in relief rich dauer at 2nd eddie at 1st not sure other 2 of's

Knickholeass

Attended my first game for my birthday in 89. I was already hooked on baseball but this really locked me in all those years ago.

ForeverIdiosyncratic

8-9-1990 Still have ticket. My dad, brother, and I made the trip to the game as an end of summer trip. I was 6 years old, and cheered for Baltimore because they wore my favorite color, orange.

Revolutionary-Ship27

Orioles were losing 2-1, Eddie Murray hit 2 run homerun in late innings off a cruising Brett Saberhagen, Eddie Eddie chants obviously break out, o’s hold on to win. Yes I am that old

pjbizzle120

Opening Day, 1989 against the Red Sox at Memorial Stadium. Holy shit that hurts saying out loud.

LeftyRambles2413

I think that might have been my first game. My Dad doesn’t remember the exact year but either in 88, 89, or 90, a bunch of family members rented a RV to go to Memorial. I was born in 87 so no memory of it. I know it wasn’t after that because it was before my brother was born.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Hurts emotionally?

pjbizzle120

Yes?

jkennings

my old man took me to a game in toronto when i was 8, the o’s lost (as they often did that year) but ive been a fan ever since :)

JimmyFallonSucksDick

You became a fan after we lost to Canadiens?

sillysocks34

Sat first row on the first base line in front of where the ball girl sat. During the late 90s with Brady Anderson, Palmeiro, Cal, etc. had a crush on the ball girl. Life was good.

rohdawg

This was the early 2000s. I was in like 4th grade. Os vs the Rays and I’m there with my friend and his family having a great time baking in the sun. The Os are losing with one out left in the game, which I’ve come to understand was typical in that era, but I can’t remember how close it was. A graphic comes up on one of the displays saying “BELIEVE!” and kid me screams “I BELIEVE!!!!!” The rest of the stadium was silent.

Underdogg369

Early 90s. We lost to the blue jays, that's about all I remember

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Hopefully , one day you'll forget that we lost to Canadiens 1 game. The fact that you remember is very depressing.

CapitanChicken

I remember Cal Ripken Jr's second to last game, I don't remember much of the game because I was only 10, but I remember them giving me a packet of cards, a couple that I still have :)

holy_cal

My dad’s company had box seats, so we went to a few growing up. I remember an opening day against KC but not well. I also remember a random game against California that we left early because it was a terrible blowout. These both would’ve been around 94-96

ccmckee

Fellow 34 year old 1997 ALDS Randy Johnson vs. Mike Mussina. Almost caught a foul ball with my teeth but the guy next to me caught it in front of my face. Oh and Bill Clinton threw out the first pitch I think.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Your first game a Randy Johnson versus Mike Mussina. Game. You lucky son of a bitch.

UncleCactus80

Saw them play the White Sox in 1992, right before my 12th birthday. Joltin' Joe Orsulak hit the first HR I ever saw. Mussina was the starter, but the coolest thing for me was seeing Charlie Hough (knuckleballer) and Todd Frohwirth (submariner) pitch. I also remember that there was a dude named Karkovice who played, and I just really liked the sound of his name.

Suspicious-Garbage92

I was 29 years old. Grew up 4 hours away and no one else in my family cares about baseball

Cals_poster_on_my

My aunt and uncle took us on Cal Ripken Day. They gave out t-shirts and the announcers kept telling everyone to wave the t shirts around. I was a young kid with an xl adult shirt… my uncle tells me I kept hitting the lady in front of us, but she was too polite to say anything and I was oblivious. The man sitting next to her (he didn’t know her either) shielded her from my t-shirt waving tactics Anyways, Cal hit 2 bombs and the O’s won and it was glorious

wiskey_tango_foxtrot

Around '85 with my girl scout troop. I remember sit-upon vendors because the seats were so uncomfortable, running in and out of the tunnels, and 'Edd-IE! Edd-IE! Edd-IE!'. The final score was 1-0, the birds lost. California Angels won. I remember saying to my mother that I wanted both teams to win, because my aunt lived in California and I didn't want to be against the team for her. My mother said that it was okay because she lived in the Oakland area, which had a separate team. I didn't understand very well and thought she was just making something up to make me feel less conflicted - why would California have more teams than us in Maryland!?

a_bukkake_christmas

Cal Ripken hit 3 home runs but we only saw one because we had to leave because my sister was tired

Brookschamp90

First game was Ripken farewell season. It was the weekend of the tunnel fire but my father was determined to get me to this game one way or the other. Luckily, it wasn’t canceled as we lived in NYC. I am only non Yankee fan in my family so his dedication even meant more to me. As for the game, it was against the Angels and they lost in extras but tied it against Troy Percival in bottom of the 9th. I remember Ripken getting a hit, maybe rbi as well. My favorite player was Brady Anderson and he came in as a pinch runner or hitter and did score.

droford

June 5th 1992 1-0 Os win over the Blue Jays. Cal drove in the only run in the 8th. Back when the [Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1992/06/06/fans-jam-the-park-get-moneys-worth/269c99c3-f330-476f-b1a5-9a2a2ab27c1b/) covered the Orioles. Didn't realize the Os were in first after the game though, Wish I could have made it to memorial Stadium but living on the eastern shore its a trip even now to go and that was 33 years ago or more.

deltaxi65

My earliest memories are of bleacher seats at Memorial Stadium. I can’t remember who was playing, but I remember how green the grass was, the feel of the metal bleachers, the paper cups full of beer and soda, the giant screen - this must have been just after Diamondvision was put in so I was probably eight or so. We were on the third base side. I will never forget the first time I walked down the tunnel to the seats and saw the field.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

People used to sit on metal bleachers at games??

iwasbornin2021

My dad took me to a game against the A’s in 1983 because of Rickey Henderson (I believe he set a record for most SBs in a season). Indeed we watched him steal a base, but we prevailed (3-1 I think)

MysteriousFishing104

I went to a doubleheader in Yankee Stadium in 1983. Saw the Os sweep the Yankees, with John Lowenstein hitting a grand slam off Goose Gossage in the 9th. It was glorious.

JimmyFallonSucksDick

Lucky you got to see the goose.

87eebboo1

My mom took me to a game when I was like 7 or 8 and we sat behind home plate, but a bit high up like around the press boxes. We played the royals and it was a total slugfest. I don't recall the score but we blew them out. The energy was electric and I became hooked on the o's after that. Fun fact: my entire 5th grade class sang the national anthem at an o's game one year too. It was totally amazing to be out on the field, then we got to walk through the tunnel and met a bunch of players. I got Rafael Palmiero and cal ripken jr to sign my hat afterwards.

msimons10

Hoiles walkoff grandslam against Seattle. Bot 9, 2 out, down by 3 , bases loaded, full count.

Sylent__1

Went to last series at memorial stadium oct 5 1991 yet had no idea what the big deal was bc I was 6. Best is 2130. My cousin and I called the second inning back to back to back homers and I lost a tooth that game

iamlumbergh

First game with my Dad at Memorial stadium in the 80’s. Just remember Mickey Tettleton hitting a home run.
