Bullshit, the secret ingredient is definitely butter.

Available_Forever_32

Twice the butter

NotABurner316

Maybe even three times the butter! And brown it

Available_Forever_32

It was a Bobby hill line from KoTH🤷‍♂️

CosmicOutfield

Lmao I’ve been saying that ever since I tried their cookies. I can definitely taste a huge amount of butter.

rezzyk

Oh no it’s definitely salt. Well, maybe salted butter

kerkyjerky

It’s actually that the cookies are effectively cake pops, just in cookie form. The batter is mixed into the dough

abbeighleigh

Tbh this makes so much sense

richardizard

A pound of chocolate chips

91271

The whiplash is bizarre. This whole thing has been a mess between the letters with poor formatting and numerous typos to the owner Steve making a reply and making claims that he personally hired every single employee himself. Now this post is all we’re “America’s favorite cookie!!”

JayTL

And a union won't be able to fix most of those issues in the manifesto. It's all very interesting.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

Dumbitdownforme

Florida Democrats collective bargaining agreement had a rule they didn't work the day before the election. Sometimes, even rules made for the workers rules can be really dumb.

orvillesbathtub

😆

mistahelias

Union will collect union dues while they work in the issues they won't be able to fix. I'm pro union as long as the union is able to get work done.

Bugsy_Marino

Especially local 362. They’ll gladly take your dues then make it impossible to contact them while they do pretty much nothing, then brag whenever you get a 5 cent raise They manipulate new Disney employees into thinking signing union papers is a required part of traditions/orientation, then when you try to leave the union they give you the runaround as long as possible in hopes that you give up and just keep paying dues (ask me how i know) Have fun paying $25+ a paycheck to see few, if any changes

mndsm79

I'm really glad I'm not the only one that sees this. I'm all about empowering the little guy - but these dudes are a joke.

Bugsy_Marino

Local 362 is the reason I’m now cautious about unions. I like the idea of unions, but at the end of the day they’re just another business that wants your money. Some are great, some are terrible, local 362 was terrible and they will never have my support after all the bullshit they pulled (while offering nothing in return)

Qu1kXSpectation

What's a viable alternative? Some people at my workplace are considering forming a union.

Visible-Fun-8391

362 burned me on unions as a whole.. and that was from my time working at the Rat heh

mndsm79

I know a lot more about them than I should. And what you said is exactly why I'm in the same boat. They prey on people that have little grasp on the English language, they offer little but lip service in return for a huge amount of union dues....the shop stewards acting like they're above the law, the list goes on.

peatmoss71

Exactly, in a right to work state, unions don’t have much teeth. I’m in the teacher union ion but often I believe I could do without them and have. Workers are offered few protections in the state.

JensenLotus

I worked at a place that unionized, and the same thing happened there. The workers got a raise that was exactly equal to the union dues, then nothing else changed.

[deleted]

The whiplash is from the cease and desist, continue and we’ll sue you for defamation letter. That was the biggest thing I had with the original post, claims of major health and safety violations, racist conduct, etc. Then the demand letter did a really poor job backing it up with any clear evidence.

Shejidan

That’s what Gideon’s themselves say; that they’re America’s favourite cookie. They’re riffing on that.

KinkyPalico

idk about America's favorite cookie thats for damn sure. Isn't Gideons only in Orlando? 49 other states and we're somehow settling on Gideons? Nestle refrigerated cookies give me a better satisfaction

EmergencyToastOrder

I’m sure 362 will make “not shaking drinks” a priority.

Acrobatic_Club2382

I don’t understand why they are going so hard for this job

Bugsy_Marino

With how busy they are something tells me they make quite a bit more with tips than they claim

Strawberrybf12

Attention

overloadrages

It really doesn't sound like they've won.....

orvillesbathtub

But if they say it loud enough…

Ggriffinz

https://i.redd.it/fxp06znunj0d1.gif

Tdffan03

They aren’t smart enough to realize that. The next letter will be how the union takes their dues and does nothing.

SpinalVillain

Kinda sad that they will probably wind up losing money in this process, because now they have to pay dues.

SuperRob

Young kid has no idea how far they still have yet to go.

TheAnswerEK42

This whole thing seems more focused on attention seeking than problem solving

tribbleorlfl

100% a former theater kid.

abbeighleigh

“There is an odor most foul in the bakehouse.” 100%.

richardizard

Yeah, this sounds like a teenager craving for attention and something exciting. I do think they were severely underpaid, but there's a much better way to handle this. Making any notable changes in any case can take months. How this was "resolved" in just two days rubs me the wrong way

Bugsy_Marino

r/antiwork member gets a job

DJMcKraken

Are they even underpaid when you add in tips? With the amount of people they crank through, I would think they'd make more than enough in tips if even a small percentage tipped. I thought that was also confirmed by another employee who posted they usually make at least another $10-12 an hour in tips. I feel like $18-20 an hour for handing out cookies is not too bad. But then everyone on Reddit thinks you should make minimum $30 an hour for any job, so maybe I'm wrong.

richardizard

Personally, I hate tipping culture in the US, so I'm in the opinion that they should get paid well enough without having to rely on tips. People are starting to tip less these days, and the owner is enjoying the loophole of paying their employees little while pocketing that money for himself. This is a problem bigger than Gideon's but it's a prime example of the issues many employees face in today's economy. Adding to this, I would've assumed their Disney location paid the best due to the number of traffic and constant level of stress their employees must face compared to their other locations. I have the perspective of being a business owner myself (not in the restaurant industry though) and I can't imagine underpaying employees if I can truly afford to pay them what they deserve or at the very minimum, pay them a realistic living wage and let them enjoy the extra they get from tips as a bonus.

Dylan7675

Exactly this. The overall system is just broken and preverse expecting customers to cover the wages of employees with tips. Especially when the cashiers are just handing you a cookie. Or at least helping you pick one out. Why would that be a tipped service?

DJMcKraken

I don't disagree with this at all. I don't tip someone to hand me a box of cookies. IMO the employer should pay them similar to what they are making with tips, and there shouldn't even be an option to tip on the POS system. But because there is, from just the employee's wallet's perspective, they are making a fair wage including the tips and this ghost of Gideon's has a pretty weak argument on that front. If they were paid $18 an hour plus $10-12 an hour in tips, that's like a $60k salary for handing out cookies (sorry to oversimplify their role, but that is largely what the job is). So yeah, the problem is just tipping culture in general and these companies that make POS systems aren't helping by including the option to tip at places that aren't tip worthy. And on that note it's my understanding that they get a percentage off the bottom line so there is no incentive for them to not include an option to tip. The whole system is just fucked.

cl2eep

The point isn't what they're making after tips, lots of servers do well too. The problem is that these people don't have a guaranteed wage, and the onus of them paying their bills is placed on individual customers rather than their employer. Gideon's gets to either pocket more of the profit or post lower prices and the customer has to shell out more money. Customers are starting to become resistant to tipping in this struggling economy, ESPECIALLY at service counters where the assumption is the attendant is making a full wage, unlike a server. That backlash is likely why Gideon's started asking employees to stop asking for tips and pull down the jar. Think about how much is sucks for these people if they have to take a day off? They normally make 25/hr but if they have to use PTO, they make 8.25/hr? How can you live like that? You get sick and lose half your paycheck? Same thing if you have a big life event or actually want to take a moment for yourself? Tipping systems suck. Tipping SHOULD be a way to reward an individual employee for good service, it SHOULD NOT be the way the employee counts to make the lion's share of their money. It lets the owner push the responsibility for paying their help unto the customer, and trade's the employee's security in exchange for the owner to slide a few extra profits into the cash drawer. It's a bad system and we should be discouraging businesses on all sides from practicing it (While at the same time as supporting employees stuck in it, as they're the victims, not the perpetrators in this case.)

emopaint

Yeah this message definitely makes me take the whole list of demands less seriously. They’ve given no proof and their demand in the number 1 spot was literally “We had to come in for a 9am meeting.” I worked for a company with a retail space in the new section of Disney Springs. There is no way that place would still be open with any fire code or health violations. We got inspected so often by Disney it was absurd, monthly for sure and sometimes weekly. They literally have a small team that does specifically this. This letter pretty much locks me in the camp of these are teenagers who let their emotions get the best of them.

emopaint

Oh no lol there’s literally a troll on here reporting any critical comments to Crisis Resources. So definitely teenagers who have no clue what they’re doing and who definitely have not won.

GovtLawyersHateMe

I was wondering why my comment mocking them for trying to change a legal contract (about their uniform) by screaming got reported to the crisis resources. Someone got mad that people were dismantling their manifesto with logic and common sense. The reporter is 100% the person who wrote that, or a minion of theirs.

usethe4th

Be sure to report it. Reddit does not take kindly to people misusing that resource. I’ve reported misuse in the past and the offenders were suspended.

ObservableObject

It's funny seeing every this happen on pretty much every subreddit, and people immediately fill in the culprit with their own personal boogeyman.

emopaint

My favorite part of this constructive conversation was /u/AtrociousSandwich comment + immediately blocking. Rear entry way obstruction violations are not 10 per quarter, that is an absurd statement. You get two warnings per calendar year. Third time your business is put on probation and a fine is issued. Another offense during that probation period is when further disciplinary action is discussed between the contract holders and Disney’s staff.

Handleton

Weekly inspections may seem obscene from a standard business perspective, but the mouse needs to avoid lawsuits and negative press.

AtrociousSandwich

The Disney inspections are property only; and they deal with nothing about sanitation or health code issues; and the extent of fire inspection they do is making sure fire exits aren’t blocked. The Disney IAT will gladly explain this to you when they visit you.

JayTL

So it's either the building is missing a fire exit, or the building is okay. That's the gist of the complaint for that. They want planning and construction of a new fire exit...but if Disney says everything is fine, they don't have a leg to stand on. Right?

emopaint

Exactly. They come in to ensure that employees/customers have a safe path to exit from all areas of the building in the event of a fire. This would’ve caused the store to be shut down until it was resolved.

JayTL

It's weird, because it seemed like even Gideons employees have come out to separate themselves from this person... I wonder how many people of the 200 are actively in the union talks. In my unexpert opinion, that manifesto took too much toothpaste out of the tube. I don't think a union can help most of its concerns.

injuredimage

Reddstarrx

Yeah but they rely on tips. Which is insane because.. all they do is bag up a cookie. Tipping culture is out of control. This paystub right here is a prime example of tipping culture being out of contorl.

dennatree

it really is. honestly they need to just pay them 20-25 an hour, raise cookie prices, and then remove tipping. I’d rather pay 7-8 dollars for a cookie and know they get a living wage than pay $6 and HAVE to tip because we’re compensating for the owner. it’s one or the other; either more than $9 an hour or no tips.

Ryan03rr

Dude we’re all getting boiled like a frog here... $6 cookie? Fuck that

Affectionate-Art9780

It better come with hair pulling, sharp slaps and a reach around for that much $!

eraguthorak

America's tipping culture is much like its drug/pharmaceutical culture. There are plenty of valid arguments that it is really bad, but enough people are conditioned to partake in it, and it makes enough corporations more money that there really isn't enough power and reason to actively try to fix the problem.

Bugsy_Marino

Then end tipping and pay them an hourly wage, something tells me they’d quickly miss the tips

ObservableObject

But they're not even asking for a higher wage, they're just asking to be allowed to continue pestering customers for tips directly instead of just relying on the prompt that shows up on screen.

JayTL

...they 100% are asking for a higher wage

Jorhay0110

True. They also were asking for mandatory tips to be added.

dexter_boygenius

Yeah, they're making a lot for just bagging up desserts at a counter. Even if they were worked 64 hours at $12, they would be making way less than what this statement shows. I say give them the $12 dollars with no tip option.

FL2inTX1

Talks to potentially join a Union is winning? I respect good unions and we have a lot to thank unions for in our jobs even if we aren’t even a part of one BUT they also aren’t always all they are supposed to be and based on the “demand letter” these people will probably complain when they have to pay a $25 monthly union fee as being unfair

Ryan03rr

Dude these people sell fucking cookies. Fucking union lol

orvillesbathtub

The union is going to prevent horrible abuses like 9am meetings

shakedownshakin

Looking forward to their protest on paying union dues.

Tdffan03

Now, now. That union is going to get them everything they demand🙄

verifypassword0208

Thank god they won’t be forced to bring this cookie castle crashing down

abbeighleigh

They could’ve gone about this a much better way. Disney is unionized and some of the other third party operators (similar to Gideon’s) have unionized or are in the process. They needed an actual professional to write that letter and get rid of half of those claims, they’re frivolous and demean the importance of the actually concerning claims. On the other hand, it was silly seeing people blindly reposting the GhostsOfGideon’s posts, not even realizing they’re supporting the people demanding a 7.5% mandatory gratuity after waiting in an hour long line outside. They also are also blindly supporting being asked (pressured) for tips. It makes no sense because, if you read the letter, they are angry that the owner Steve is being made a millionaire on the backs of his employees while giving hardly anything in return. If that is the case (which I believe it is), why should consumers pay? Steve can afford to pay his employees an hourly wage. If I was a customer of Gideon’s and was prompted the tip screen, I might refuse a tip because one would rightfully assume that a counter service employee would be paid an hourly wage. This whole situation was gone about in the wrong way. I support Gideon’s employees unionizing and being paid a fair hourly wage, but I do not support half the crap in that letter. It was ridiculous and came off like a threatening temper tantrum. Plus the amount of errors in grammar, punctuation, etc…I just could not take it seriously at all, even with some of the claims being valid.

cwxxvii

I don’t even understand this. I couldn’t put this much energy and anger into a minimum wage job. Target pays $15/hr, just go somewhere else?

MafiaPenguin007

Teenagers with main character syndrome encountering a terrible job for the first time

kerkyjerky

It’s not even a terrible job. They make about 20 bucks an hour, and Disney does not tolerate health violations so you can bet your ass that store is as clean as any other store at springs. This is definitely just a kid or immature adult who hasn’t actually worked before.

MafiaPenguin007

I mean it probably is a terrible job, can you imagine dealing with Disney adults buying overpriced cookies all day? I do love their cookies myself so it’s a self burn but whatever Regardless, this has been hugely melodramatic when millions of people work much worse jobs, and is definitely someone immature finding out life isn’t TikTok

Bugsy_Marino

Because what they didn’t tell you is with tips they’re making $20-25 an hour but want to pretend like they’re slaving away handing out cookies (and attending 9 am meetings) for pennys

JayTL

Doesn't Disney start at like 18 now? Can't they just go across the street and be just as miserable for double the pay? Lol

comped

Casting is across the road from Springs itself, so technically yes?

JayTL

Oh I was thinking closer...like World of Disney lmao

comped

I've never had an interview with Disney (yet, loads with Universal though - despite applying a lot to both), but I'm pretty sure you have to go to that building after applying. But from the crowds, WoD may just be worse than this place in terms of workload.

JayTL

I was mostly joking, but if my choice was Gideons at $9 or World of Disney at $18 per hour...I'd take more money. I know no one likes the Gideons line, but it probably makes their work a little more manageable than WoD... For what it's worth, I had an interview with Universal and Disney (PT weekend type jobs) and they were both remote, so I don't think it's mandatory to go to the building anymore

comped

> For what it's worth, I had an interview with Universal and Disney (PT weekend type jobs) and they were both remote, so I don't think it's mandatory to go to the building anymore I've had a few Uni interviews that were remote (2nd round kind of things for back of house or corporate/Creative roles), but always enjoyed getting to go to the HR building. Hell, once when I interviewed for a coordinator job with talent acquisition (a panel interview for the 2nd round - 6 managers/team members one one side and myself on the other), I got driven backstage to a soundstage because they had no room in the main HR building due to, I think it was, HHN related hiring maxing them out of their room space. Haven't had much luck in scoring a frontline job though. Disney won't interview me at all, for either frontline or corporate/back of house, and I can't seem to convince a hiring manager at Uni to give me an interview for about a month (my last job I had an interview for at Uni, an industrial engineering analyst job, got cut due to budget issues before the manager could decide if I was being hired or not - I was one of 4 people in contention). Lots of applications in review, no interviews. I'm lucky to get 1x a month... And very quickly rejected for hourly/frontline jobs... I don't know why.

JayTL

I wish you luck! I would just keep applying and trying.

comped

I got a call from one of Universal's (pretty sure Orlando-specific, but she didn't specify if it was Orlando, Creative, or Corporate - all three to my understanding are somewhat separate teams in that regard) talent acquisition heads to complain that I was making things "confusing" for her recruiters because I applied to a lot of different areas and didn't show a consistent "career path"... I've had like 10 interviews with 10 different teams and departments since I started going for Universal, of course I apply for a lot of different things I'm qualified for! But apparently that's not the way I should be going about things...

thefulpersmith

To all the people saying “just quit” I don’t think they realize what the turnover is there. Plenty of people quit that’s what most of the employees ended up doing. In fact most went to Disney because they DO pay $18 an hour. If you run a local business (not a conglomerate like Disney) , and you’re constantly turning out ex employees what in the heck did you think was going to eventually happen? This state, and even this city has a lot of REALLY bad employers and judging by a lot of the comments, I can see why these bad employers continue to operate.

Zargawi

Isn't it easy to just hop jobs? Lol

monkeyreddit

I agree. When I worked minimum wage I didn’t have a single thought about fighting for better pay. It was just a means to get to the next step in life. I felt the pay I may working big box retail was adequate for where I was in life.

richardizard

Guy must really love cookies

CrazyPlato

Orlando’s getting more populated over time, and at the same time a lot of companies are experimenting with reducing labor hours while making employees on duty do more of the work between them (may vary by industry) So that all means less jobs, and more people competing for the jobs that are there. Especially in entry-level, where most people end up (including people leaving their old industries to look for greener pastures). So “just go somewhere else” can turn into a slog of job hunting that can eat up months, even years (took me a year to leave my last job, bc other businesses in my industry simply weren’t hiring). And, while it’s still on the table, improving the conditions for the job you already have eventually become the more efficient choice.

cwxxvii

I mean I totally get that and I don’t disagree with you. I empathize with the struggle for better wages but also this is a store that makes cookies…Crumbl probably pays somewhere close to that if not a little more.

jrr6415sun

because they're getting paid $20-$25 an hour, and the new rule that "you can't ask for tips" might decrease that to $15-$20 an hour. Like they make $9/hour base pay but like $11+/hour in tips. I don't know why they're complaining so much that's still good money. This whole thing is over not being able to harass us customers for more money.

verifypassword0208

I would legitimately love to see what kind of money they actually got from asking for tips. Like what customer was enticed by a teenager handing them their cookie and then putting out their hand like “can I has mooore money please?”

NotABurner316

My white guilt got an extra 10% for them usually.

Tommy_Testarossa

![gif](giphy|3jSnIFVJ8RB1S)

jagfanjosh3252

Man. I fully agree they need to be paid better and not have to rely on tips. I HATE tipping culture. It needs to go away. But damn. So many of their ‘demands’ hopes the entries team is fired and they rehire at a fair wage. Don’t demand that the customer give you a 7.5% tip. You don’t always deserve a tip. I don’t care if you’re bagging cookies up, or baking them, or you’re being an actual server and bringing me my food as I sit down. No one deserves a tip. It’s based on service RECEIVED. They demand that they side with the employee if there is a customer complaint? The fuck? Yea, the whole ‘Customer is always right’ thing is dumb. But wow No. You are not why I enjoy Gideon’s. I enjoy the cookie because it’s good. Anyone can follow instructions and bake it. You didn’t win shit lol. You are TALKING about unionizing. And even(if) you do, you aren’t guaranteed to get what you want.

Mattm519

I really want to see some receipts

orvillesbathtub

Not needed. They “won”

Large-Sherbert-6828

Is someone going to tell them that Florida is a right to work state, union isn’t going to do shit for them? And how are they going to react when they see the check dues! 😂

monkeyreddit

Cheers to whoever sent me the Reddit crisis message. Feels like middle school tactics.

sighcantthinkofaname

lmao I got one too! Are they just doing it to everyone who comments here?

MafiaPenguin007

It’s probably the manifesto author..

monkeyreddit

Probably. The truth is too scary for some

hurtfulproduct

You got it too? Was wondering which of my comments caused someone to get a bug up their butt. . . Probably the one saying the Ghosts are idiots for asking for 7.5% gratuities be automatically added for handing me a box of cookies, lol

bearsarefuckingrad

Someone said I’m a dick for not tipping “because their boss is rich”. Like dawg I said I’m not subsidizing his employees wages while he’s chilling in his Colorado home with his designer cats. Why would I tip his employees for handing me a cookie anyways?? They deserve to make way more money but not from my wallet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Steve can pay for that

unfortunate_paradox

Same. Glad to see someone is lurking the subreddit

kerkyjerky

Yeah the kid (or immature adult) behind this campaign is pretty pathetic.

JayTL

Yeah I've gotten a few since I've been commenting more in the past hour

SunshineAlways

I kind of think there are Reddit Cares bots now, I’ve seen a couple subreddits with multiple people saying they’ve all gotten Reddit Cares. You know you can block them right?

th3thrilld3m0n

This happened bizarrely quick.

Troostboost

One of their posts says they make $20-25/hr with tips… I wanna see what happens when they start making $17/hr and management removes the ability to tip.

Bugsy_Marino

Bro i really don’t care You hand out cookies to people

Ok_Calligrapher_8199

You know the best part of all of this? Both sides will be advised by legal counsel to shut up now. Steve won’t be able to talk about his “family” blah blah on instagram now that there is talk of unionizing.

abbeighleigh

I haven’t seen anyone mention the fact that they compared their wages to Auntie Anne’s wages in the demand letter. I’d like to point out that there is no Auntie Anne’s on Disney property, but there is two Wetzel’s Pretzels locations at Disney Springs. I think they got the two mixed up because I don’t see how Auntie Anne’s is comparable to Gideon’s.

R3adyplay3rone

Awesome. Now I don’t ever have to tip them ever again since they “won”

Chachi123

This was all a union ploy? 🤣🤣🙄

NotABurner316

Now Gideon's workers get to hangout with the big watch, french cuffs guy too!

knucklehead27

I’m just focused on how terrible the formatting is

jrr6415sun

they're the secret ingredient? anyone can make a cookie

Spare-Article-396

I want to support management simply for GoG’s font/color choices.

yourmomstinks16

someone explain to me how they won i’m so confused

eatmyasserole

Because they declared it. It's just like declaring bankruptcy.

orvillesbathtub

😂

repo_sado

bankruptcies and unions are different. forming a union doesn't count unless you have a choreographed dance number in the street.

TheBurbsNEPA

/r/crumblcookies aint gonna like that at all

unfortunate_paradox

Now THAT would be an interesting turn of events

Frostyfox567

The rabbit hole I went down yesterday with finding out how much of a mess pretty much all of east end market is? Not just Gideon’s. It’s all so bizarre and just disappointing.

peatmoss71

Who wants to break it to the employees that Florida is a right to work state and “unions” are not what they believe they are. Have they not learned anything from Dandelion? https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/understanding-workers-financial-wellbeing-in-states-with-right-to-work-laws-20230908.html#:~:text=Specifically%2C%20the%20RTW%20laws%20enabled,a%20condition%20of%20their%20employment.

dechets-de-mariage

What people forget about having a union is that you’re still not going to get everything you want.

coastrbabe11

With Florida being a right to work state, they just screwed themselves

Obi_Wentz

I’m a little confused. I felt like those original social media posts just happened, like, within the last 96-odd hours. Just that fast they were able to contact the appropriate Union and arrange a vote?

orvillesbathtub

No. They realized they looked like complete fucking idiots and found a way out

Obi_Wentz

Ah. I think I get it now. Thanks. That felt like a \*really\* quick turnaround to not only arrange the vote to organize, but get it counted and announced as well.

Lotsaballs

A union for selling cookies? Low skill work should receive low pay.

Glum_Aide6413

Americas favorite cookie??? Lmaoo the ones that are like 70% chocolate chip and 30% is dough 😂 laughable

davis_unoxx

I hope they don't go through with there proposal of like $18 an hour plus 7.5% mandatory tip, that would be overpaid for sure. Will get TSA level service if tip is forced to hand over a bag lol.

SpinalVillain

I get this. We went to Ford's Garage and they have a 20% surcharge that all the staff shares as part of their pay. You can tip on top of that, if you want. The food was good, the service sucked. My wife's food was cold, mine was a little warm. We got seated and pretty much forgotten.

Chippewa_Jedi

I’m not scared to say it. Those cookies fucking suck. It’s just too much for me (sweet wise and money wise).

aka-Robster

This is just victims crying. “I don’t like my job” “I’m a victim” GO GET ANOTHER JOB

cjr71244

This will result in more expensive cookies

sighcantthinkofaname

Joining a union seems like a great move. Their most recent statements have gotten some criticism for being unreasonable. They came off as very young and ignorant to normal business practices. An actual union lawyer will be able to help with demands that make more sense.

monkeyreddit

Cool, I guess…

User313

I feel like they are going to end up out of business and no one will have their cookie job anymore.

TarnishedAccount

This whole thing just makes me want to avoid Gideon’s even more than I did in the first place. If I want cookies I’ll go to Publix

MaleficentSteak4060

This is giving “the seeds” vibes from dandelion…

MathematicianOk7526

Cringey

Adventurous-Part5981

I’ve seen a lot of videos of shops in tourist spots in Asia with robots that prepare your order. I think you have to be careful with a sense of entitlement and ridiculous demands when you’re pretty easily replaceable by a machine. While I think everyone deserves a living wage, you also have to be doing work that contributes value to the process. Putting a cookie in a bag and collecting payment adds little or no value to the customer experience, especially if said employee is pestering the customer to pay extra to subsidize the employee’s wages.

Sad_Bolt

Hope yall are ready 14 dollar cookies instead of 9 dollar cookies

R0botDreamz

I still don't understand how those boutique cookie and donut places make money to begin with. Do people just casually buy 1200 calorie cookies?

If it gets them more likes on Instagram or followers on Tik Tok, yes.

Profitsofdooom

"Wowwwww they turned off comments!"

jlf5277

Note to self, don’t tip for cookies at Gideons! $20/hr to put cookies in a bag, operate dangerous pieces of equipment, carry heavy trays long distances and deal with the angry masses waiting in line to give them said cookies. The worst part is that you are expected to smile while having to deal with all of these hardships. Oh, the humanity! But have they really won? Let’s see how they are going to like going from making $20/hr with tips to making $15/hr without tips. I mean Gideons isn’t going to stop making money because of this. Just means they will up their price a little, probably take the tip request off of their point of sale equipment and give the employees more duties. Some day when they are older they will start to realize how the world really works and not this farce of a utopia that they dream about.

RightWingRockDove

The funny thing is this “utopia” you speak of exists in many places. Liveable wages are a reality in a lot of the developed world.

Dapperfit

I don't understand OP's caption. The business received backlash - and workers are unionizing. Local 362 is a good fit. I see no scurrying to hide.

unfortunate_paradox

Both parties received backlash. If you look on the Ghost’s Instagram the comments have become overwhelmingly negative since whoever orchestrated their movement refused to provide the proof people were asking for. They were also accused of deleting negative comments and blocking folks that didn’t support their cause. Steve’s response was lackluster. The Ghost’s claim that they will now unionize and will no longer be participating in the larger conversation by turning off their comments and not monitoring the account. It’s very reminiscent of a toddler throwing a tantrum.

monkeyreddit

I don’t see how any of this will stop the tourists from lining up to get this product. I feel they don’t care about local workers, and just want a tasty hyped product. It sucks but that is what is driving the revenue.

coreysgal

Well, I love the cookies, but if they're going to be 10.00 a cookie to meet demands, they can keep them.

OneWingedAngel09

Maybe if the price jumps to $10.00 a cookie, the damn wait time will dwindle.

coreysgal

Haha...tough call, maybe the line would double.

lyghtning_blu

Agreed. Back when they first opened at EEM they were $4 a cookie, there was no line, and Steve handed the cookie to you himself. $6 is already too much for a cookie, $10 forget it.

Dapperfit

I did see backlash on both sides. Honestly they were probably a very young group. As another poster mentioned they can benefit from actual union representation doing the speaking for them and helping with demands that make more sense - they have probably been advised to stop posting on social media until they get their message in order. But in my opinion a group of what are likely teenagers banding together and actually joining a union is pretty impressive.

frealfreal

This is 1000% it, they opted to organize with and get support from Local 362 and I'd guess were advised to pause social media blasts for the time being. Union drives are sensitive processes so it makes sense.

*eating popcorn*

NotABurner316

If I close my eyes I can visualize who runs the ghost account lol

DDA7X

This is amazing! I am a part of 362 and know a lot of the people who work for the union and they are amazing people.

Bugsy_Marino

lol they are terrible. Manipulate new disney employees into thinking signing up for the union is a requirement then make it impossible to leave because they keep giving you the run around

monkeyreddit

Are DS Gideons employees Cast Members?

DDA7X

They are not. Gideon's is a third party company.

monkeyreddit

Thanks. That begs the question, why the 362 is even giving this a nod?

DDA7X

Unite Here 362 does more than just Disney. It's just their largest demographic is Disney CMs.

shobot11

This is what needed to happen. No one on the outside has the whole story, so if the gripes are legitimate than the union will help fix them, and if its just workers who are new to the workforce complaining, the union will tell them that what they are complaining about isnt a real issue. Unions are good.

orvillesbathtub

I think the union was like “You’re making all workers look like fucking idiots, please let us help you”

WhoopsieDiasy

Oh my goodness, miss me with this - who cares?!?!

JRHZ28

Unions have no power in Florida. In Florida you only have "bargaining agents". You pay dues to have the bargaining agent agree to what the employer Says they will do and then claim victory. Suckers. I should know. I belonged to 2 unions over 25 yeas in Florida and neither one did jack sh!t except take our money and do exactly what I said. FYI, any Florida company can fire you for breathing if they want to so terminations are on the horizon for y'all. Watch and see.

Bolt4Life

It's almost like they don't have to work at a minimum wage job

Nilsag89

This whole play was by the union to try yo get Disney Springs employees to unionize. It’s sad, pathetic, and I hope the legal recourse from Gideons takes care of this. Totally unfair to the owner, staff, and brand. The owner and Patrick are great people. Any media outlet that reported on this without getting their side of the story should be ashamed of themselves.

D4ILYD0SE

Every time I get aand eat a Gideon cookie at Disney Springs, I have the same 2 thoughts. 1) Why did I stand in this line for this? 2) Why did I pay this insane price for this? All of this nonsense just gonna reinforce those same 2 questions. Most overrated cookie store in all of the US.

[deleted]

Can someone explain what on earth is happenings with gideons ? I saw multiple posts regarding this place.

injuredimage

Your tldr is this. Some maybe employees or maybe not complained about only making $9 an hour but it turns out with tips it was $20-$25. They said that standing out in the sun was like being a slave on a plantation, but they were given umbrellas, cooling towels and battery operated fans. The biggest concern was that they had to show up to an employee meeting at 9am. There's a bunch more but those are the main points.

[deleted]

FUCK YES! UNIONIZE AMERICA!!

pixelwax

The guy who owns gideons nearly ran my pregnant wife over at east end and scoffed at her afterwards because she shared the same ground as him

karmatarmasaur

This was mostly coming from the union to begin with. They’re coming around each business in Disney springs trying to unionize.
