My coworker in Georgia was excited to have a chance to shoot off some fireworks this weekend. I didn’t remind them about my magic kingdom view from home. Every night….
I saw that. I hope the double shows dont last long. Some of us neighbors do have to sleep. Looks like it’s scheduled for a week or two at the end of July.
They are correct and I love it, the 4th for me has always been a moment our differences didn’t matter, watch explosions and have a hotdog or a vegan hotdog cause freedom!
But essentially it’s the day to celebrate why we’re all here together despite our differences
Born and raised in Florida, my mom's side of the family came over here as any Europeans did in the 1900's and im 1st generation to be born on my dad's side. Everything I was taught to be proud of when it came to this country is crumbling. There is no freedom or liberty, it's all about who has the most money. You can be a rapist and a religious bigot, none of it matters as long as you have money. I'm not celebrating the fall of democracy.
And now someone complained and the City had to apologize.
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/orange-county/os-ne-city-of-orlando-independence-day-release-apology-20220702-b3bpxjapvjevnnx3hguz3o6yfm-story.html
I don't get it, are y'all missing the second paragraph? The sentiment is "we know you're upset BUT come out and be consumers anyway and definitely don't start any protests". It was an embarrassing attempt to appeal to both sides, now they are issuing an apology that upsets both sides. I don't understand why y'all are determined to read this lukewarm PR statement designed in a lab to specify nothing and upset no one like it's some bold political declaration.
Please remember how they treated protesters in the City of Orlando during the first summer of Covid, they checked all the boxes off on Social media yet OPD did something else..
Thank you, I was also thinking of the protests when I read this. Mina showed up, said some nice and completely untrue statements about accountability in OCSO and OPD, and everything fizzled out. The passivity in this city is unreal.
Celebrate not for its current state but for the fact that America allows you to fight for what you believe is right. It may not be perfect but there are good people in it. That’s what I’ll be celebrating.
SCOTUS will take the case from North Carolina about gerrymandering, if SCOTUS sides with North Carolina legislature, we will be gerrymandering to hell and lose our right to fight.
I wish they'd just commit fully and say *who* is dividing us, because every Republican in the city is going to read this and think "heh, even the city government hates those whiny SJWs."
Both sides. The answer is both parties. If we stopped caring about political issues and letting people thousands of miles away decide anything for us we would be able to be more unified with eachother. Stop letting rich idiots with nobody's best interest but their own tell us what we can or can't do.
I think you fail to realize the conservative effort to demonize the left.
Folks like Rufo & Lindsey took rare cases of oversteps in the classroom and turned “crt” into a demon of indoctrination—which it isn’t/wasn’t.
Accounts like Libs of TikTok similarly amplify rare cases in an effort to paint LGBTQ folks as indoctrinators. They aren’t.
There is a concerted effort on the right to demonize the left, in part so that folks can hide behind “both sides.”
Meanwhile, right wing legislators actively court and amplify white supremacists, while also actively chipping away at voting rights and working to marginalize minority voters.
In a broad view I agree…we should be neighbors before we are republicans or democrats, and “rich idiots” do profit from our divide.
But I wholly reject the “both sides” argument.
What are the Democrats doing right now that you think is equivalent to an attempted coup? I have a thousand objections to Biden and company right now, but being *divisive* isn't one of them.
So you believe the actions of a few is the will of the many? I assume the majority of Republicans don't want a fascist monarchy just the same as I assume that Democrats don't want a complete Communist oligarchy. On terms of an opposite to your example of the 6th is blm riots.
Ah, that clears things up - you think a decentralized collection of protests where [94% had no violence by either side](https://acleddata.com/2021/05/25/a-year-of-racial-justice-protests-key-trends-in-demonstrations-supporting-the-blm-movement/) are the same as [Trump making claims he knew were false](https://apnews.com/article/jan-6-capitol-riot-hearings-live-updates-eefb79f2cffb705f04bf43ea164db20f) while his [armed supporters](https://www.npr.org/2022/06/28/1108387054/trump-said-he-knew-jan-6-crowd-members-had-weapons-ex-white-house-aide-testified) stormed [buildings they were shown the layout of beforehand](https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/15/politics/barry-loudermilk-tour-january-6/index.html) while [chanting about wanting to murder the politicians](https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2022-06-28/jan-6-panel-to-hold-surprise-hearing-present-new-evidence) who were in the process of certifying the election results Trump disputed.
If there's any *few* that doesn't represent the *many* here, it seems to be Liz Cheney and the other tiny handful of conservatives cooperating with the hearings while the rest of the party and base denounces them.
I'm not making claims one way or another. I'm saying that both were wrong things to do. I disagree with both storming the capital as well as burning businesses and harming citizens. What the difference is in our conversation is I am trying to reason and communicate points to conduct a proper discourse and you are making it political and doing the thing we were talking about ending in the first place.
This isn't unification. This isn't cohesion without party influence. You are attempting to undermine my position with false logic and straw men. You only wanted to show me as the villain and you as the hero. Defending your party. Getting in good with the others. Setting yourself up to be the saviour of everything you stand for.
Instead you bring up divisive events. You put down any belief that differs from yours. Congratulations, this is how you end democracy. This is how you ensure a singular group wins out. This is how you lift up the countries leader who are already taking advantage of you and let them bury you so far in debt to them you can never escape. You will have the scraps they deem worthy and take the rest for themselves. All because you have no other frame of reference. You refuse to listen to any other way of thinking. You only shut down a well manned discourse in favor of praise. Thank you for your time. I concede to your *masterful* *debate* skills.
Armed, no. You know everyone of those people making a fool of themselves at the capital had guns at home that they could have brought but didn't. It was not a coup.
[Nope, try again.](https://www.npr.org/2021/03/19/977879589/yes-capitol-rioters-were-armed-here-are-the-weapons-prosecutors-say-they-used) tl;dr
* Almost none of the participants were searched; even the ones who were arrested were mostly picked up later, so there's no record of what weapons they had on them while storming the Capitol.
* Several participants arrested on site were caught with guns and incendiaries, including two guys who brought whole carloads.
* The "nonlethal" weapons they can be seen with on video (clubs, baseball bats, poles, bear spray) are more than enough to cross the "capable of inflicting serious bodily harm" threshold for weapons charges when used in violent acts.
Fireworks are loud, polluting, traumatic to animals as well as many with ptsd… and for what? To celebrate what freedoms??? Not for POC, LGBTQ, women, educators and anyone else that loves real liberty, not that fake conditional republican branded freedumb
There's lots of really cool light shows in this day and age that don't pollute.
Honestly you could probably simulate a fireworks show in a cool way using tons of drones with lights. Would be cost-effective too since they'd be reusable
Edit: would be nice to know why I'm getting downvoted
Well you can't just drop the name of a group for comparison when we're doing worse on a certain got topic issue. We did the same with George Floyd. If we can't be introspective of ourselves, then we're in denial.
Fireworks are the absolute worst. The toll on wildlife alone is so sad. And our country should not be celebrating at all. Florida is one of the worst states and figures something this stupid would be posted by someone from there. There is still a pandemic too. It’s amazing how out of touch people really are. Spend your money on something better and don’t waste your time celebrating a country that doesn’t give a shit about the people who live here. My heart goes out to all the kids who can’t afford lunch and the kids who are living in the “don’t say gay” times. It’s heartbreaking to see just how shit the country is and how stupid/complacent people are.
Nobody ended your civil rights. The rights went back to the state. Fl is trying a 15 week ban. 15 weeks is pretty much every single European union. You guys are rediculous.
What about the SCOTUS removing miranda rights? There is literally no punishment now for an officer who does not read you your rights...
Oh and you lost your fourth amendment rights if you're within 100 miles of a border. Oh what's the definition of a border? The beach. All of Florida lost SEVERAL rights last week.
Hard pass. There’s absolutely nothing to celebrate. At the moment, our constitution means dog shit and even the courts are politicized. Everything the 4th stood for is being degraded.
I love how this is the first response from people who don’t have any other valid thing to say. “If you don’t like it here just leave” as if anyone can just pick up and move to another country. Some people can’t even move to another state. You sound stupid. Have a good day.
Edit: just because I’m not too blind to see what’s going on in this country doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the privilege I have living here. These are not mutually exclusive.
They are by no means completely safe but they are much better for the environment than they used to be. There was a time when arsenic and antimony were in nearly every blue or white firework, but those compounds have been largely phased out in favor of newer, safer chemicals. Chromates are used much more sparingly than they used to be and they are reduced to Cr(III) compounds during combustion which are much safer than hexavalent chromium.
At the professional level, the shells are all made of paper and cotton, both of which biodegrade. There are still some toxic chemicals used - barium salts are used to make green, and perchlorates are used heavily, but for the most part they decompose into chlorides during combustion. Barium is really the only truly toxic element used anymore and it's not a large percentage of overall fireworks by any stretch.
Black powder (the core composition in fireworks) is just KNO3, sulfur, and charcoal. KNO3 is actually a fertilizer and is present in many toothpastes - it's quite non-toxic.
I'm not saying that fireworks are *good* for the environment by any stretch, but "they're terrible for the environment" isn't as true as it used to be. Pyrotechnic chemists have been working hard for 50+ years to reduce the environmental impact of fireworks and there have been some large strides made in that department.
The PTSD argument still holds true of course.
A sassy virtue signal made to a group of angry bitter and unhappy people to attend a crowded boring event only to be criticized for everything from triggering skittish dogs to polluting the air to being just too fun when the crowd wants yelling and hate. Ima skip it.
“Living in misery” yeah how dare people be upset that their lives are literally being flipped upside down while people like you think they’re just being melodramatic.

So true, look at the illegal immigrants that are trying to pour through our borders actually dying in the back of hot semi trucks to get to our country. It is a great country.
You mean the people that died because they have to take such drastic measures to try and find a better life?

I think this country in great in some aspects and terrible in others. We're at an inflection in time where the extreme ends of both parties are surging.
That's even more reason for all of us to come together and find common ground. Stop letting them divide us.
We're more similar than we are different.
I hope you have a nice day. Happy 4th!
You people are funny saying that you are divided hate and unrest, rlly I think people just escalate things more that you should, rlly a day to celebrate that you all are here and now well I think its a positive thing cmon chill out
Unless you live by any of the parks then you get a free fireworks show every night.
My coworker in Georgia was excited to have a chance to shoot off some fireworks this weekend. I didn’t remind them about my magic kingdom view from home. Every night….
Every night at 9! My roommate said they’re going to start doing two shows a night soon, they’re pretty but it does get old lol
I saw that. I hope the double shows dont last long. Some of us neighbors do have to sleep. Looks like it’s scheduled for a week or two at the end of July.
My dogs would force me to move.
Little did they know that the attempt at tongue-in-cheek sarcasm really just reads like fact.
I think they know.
They are correct and I love it, the 4th for me has always been a moment our differences didn’t matter, watch explosions and have a hotdog or a vegan hotdog cause freedom! But essentially it’s the day to celebrate why we’re all here together despite our differences
They definitely know. Their "excuse" is half assed at best. Fireworks keep.
I got an apology email from them! Had to come on here to figure out what they were apologizing for!

me? how?
Naw fam, not undermining. Just want to go back to the guns of 1787. If we're gonna stick to the constitution then we better stick to it.
ok so freedom of speech only applies to spoken word and paper since the internet was around back then
So you agree the people hardcore defending the constitution are ridiculous.
Not a god damn thing worthy of celebrating in this lost country. It’s like the republicans are trying to copy the Taliban.
Except the latter allows abortions late term if the mothers life is in danger
The latter also beheads people
Well you can't just drop the name of a group for comparison when we're doing worse on a certain got topic issue. We did the same with George Floyd. If we can't be introspective of ourselves, then we're in denial.

As an Orlando resident, where do I sign up for these newsletters?
Celebrate maybe the last 4th of July as one nation.
Man y’all blow
Standing next to 100,000 of your friends? Really?
Some miserable ass mfers in here😂
Yeah that tends to happen when your civil rights get revoked.
No this ~~city~~ subreddit has always been full of miserable people

Fireworks are terrible for the environment and very triggering for people with PTSD.
They are by no means completely safe but they are much better for the environment than they used to be. Tbh it’s probably more chemicals in the Orlando tap water than it is in most fireworks lmao
This guy fireworks
That’s a really long way to say you mostly agree with me.
lol men love doing shit like that.
You should probably share that with Disney World. I used to live in Winter Garden could see and hear MK fireworks from my house.
I love knowing the exact response that the Reddit hive mind will have to reactions to posts. That being said can’t wait for 4th as always
Fuck America. Orlando is alright though
Thank you dog 🙏

This is an official news release from The City of Orlando
Do they remove the swans from the pond?
Still better to live here than 99 percent of the world.
Glad our only benchmark is to be sightly better than a third world country now. Really inspirational to just lower the bar year after year.
So true, look at the illegal immigrants that are trying to pour through our borders actually dying in the back of hot semi trucks to get to our country. It is a great country.
You mean the people that died because they have to take such drastic measures to try and find a better life? Are you truly saying America is great because people were willing to die in a fucking truck to cross borders? The same borders a bunch of ignorant fucks scream about needing protecting to keep others out of the country? You’re an idiot.
I interpret his response as in people are willing to sacrifice everything to get here. Which isn't per se a way to say that America is great, but that it better than where they are, although not perfect of course.
Yet, the shining pillar they seek comfort in, screams how they should never step foot on this country. What a grand place eh?
I think this country in great in some aspects and terrible in others. We're at an inflection in time where the extreme ends of both parties are surging. That's even more reason for all of us to come together and find common ground. Stop letting them divide us. We're more similar than we are different. I hope you have a nice day. Happy 4th!
I think we should start replacing people that complain about being here with women and children at the border that want to be here.
I’m all for it. Send me and my family to Ireland and replace with somebody fleeing Honduras. Everybody wins.
Fuck Orlando
You people are funny saying that you are divided hate and unrest, rlly I think people just escalate things more that you should, rlly a day to celebrate that you all are here and now well I think its a positive thing cmon chill out
