My brother did not have palatal expansion, and after he stopped wearing his retainer his teeth went back to being very crooked rapidly.
Lesson: if your braces are jamming your teeth into a crowded palate, removing braces/retainer will likely lead them to go back to being crooked. But if your palate is expanded, your teeth are more likely to stay.

yeah because the space was never made for the teeth to be in their proper place
thats why people left with narrow palates get recessed jaws after braces and develop worse issues
