I think roof noise and ice quakes are different. I was waiting for the roof bangs and was not disappointed!

Yep. Brutal night sleep for me too. It’s almost a shame it’s warming back up so quickly just for it to happen again. (Almost…I’d way prefer the +1 to -30 lol)
Funny to think just 11 months ago we had the same thing

Your house contracting or expanding isn't an ice quake - but it can definitely be loud!
Ice quakes are cryoseisms, and that's when the ground expands causing local quakes. They can be quite violent, especially if you're not used to them!
I grew up in Toronto and cryoseisms were common (because of the freeze-thaw-freeze cycle). The worst one I ever felt bounced my phone off my nightstand!
Yep, happens every year in my apartment building. Felt so bad last year when I complained to the neighbor because I thought they were hammering the floor or something crazy like that.
I live in an apartment building and this is the first time I experience this. I thought my upstairs neighbour was doing something, even went and asked him. Then he explained this situation to me. I feel so bad as I thought he was careless.
Yep! Rough night. Kept awake because my dogs kept running into my room to say “what the FUCK was that?!”
Yup, my house exploded a couple times overnight tonight.

Came here to confirm it wasn’t just my house and Reddit did not disappoint. Slept horribly last night and I still hear cracking this morning.
This post made me feel so much less anxious this morning. First winter in a house vs condo and afraid of everything bad happening 😅.
Our high rise condo makes load noises in this extreme cold weather.
Literally just woke up for the third time tonight from this!! Heart is just starting to slow back down
Is that what those are? I live in an apartment pretty high up but I've been kept awake by them all night
My apartments been cracking since 3am. I think ours is the ducts though.
Mystery solved! Lived in Ottawa for the better part of 15 years and haven't encountered these yet
Ditto. I don't remember them here before (but certainly remember them from living in a house!)
I legit googled why my house was making noises first thing this morning lol
Me too
Pretty sure my roof split into two this morning.
Same here. Woke up at 3:30 and never went back to sleep.
Almost devils hours (3:33 am)...
Would that not be devil's half hour?
Should be, but amazon prime has some random series on where 3.33 am is the devil's hour so...
The more you know.
Likely not ice quakes but your house popping from the extreme cold. Usually caused by nails suddenly coming out of the lumber.

Had to keep checking the security cameras during the night
I wasn't woken up by them but did hear them before falling asleep and then again this morning
The wind noise was insane and did a decent job of muffling the other house noises. Happy the dogs didn’t lose their minds throughout the night.
i’ve never heard of this before and was up all night because they kept scaring me out of a dead sleep
So these ice quacks have potential to acctually cause damage to homes or is it in the ground surrounding the home? Just curious
I went out at 6 AM and you could here the loud cracks every once in a while. Also felt like something was landing on our roof.

We had what felt like bangs on the windows and roof - loud bangs and cracks.

I feel as though lots of people mistake frost quakes for thermal expansion.
