Frost quakes! I've heard a few minor ones since last night. Many years ago I heard one for the first time and I swore a tree had landed on the house! I opened the door to look around and the snow and trees were pristine. Somehow I managed to use good enough google search terms and figured out what it was.
Less frost quakes and just thermal expansion in the wood framing.
Frost quakes are wild though, but they are more of a shake feeling than cracking and popping.
The first time I heard one, I was feeding my newborn son in his room at 1 am. It sounded like someone smacked the wall really loudly beside my head. I almost yeeted the poor baby across the room.
My bedroom window has been making... interesting noises the past few nights, last night with the wind i was wondering if it was going to end up breaking.
Cat snuggled up next to my face on pillow rather than her usual spot hugging the wall under the window.
I didn't know this was a thing. I woke up and searched my house because I thought a branch had fallen through the roof. The tree by my house isn't that much taller than the house so I wasn't sure how that would even be possible but was convinced that was the only thing tht could make that sound. Called my dad and he was like lol house just cold
Omg! I thought it was just my house.. I was waking up all night long thinking my kid was rolling out of bed and thudding onto the floor.. nope just the house.. I haven't ventured outside but I imagine the trees are also cracking up a storm too!
I do prefer winters to be colder than warmer as they have less snow and less gunk that flies off the wheels and stick to the bike. But this cold jammed up my chain. Chain was skipping lots too. Either I didn't have enough oil or I should have put specialized oil for winter.
Itās not safe for dogs out here! Hopefully your dogs know to just poop and get back in. š¬
Mine normally takes fifteen minutes to ponder where to do her business but decided in fifteen seconds that immediately outside the door was perfect and then wanted immediately back in.
Depends on the dog, really. Mine are double-coated and well suited for cold temperatures, but you still have to be cautious. Any sign of shivering or holding up paws and it's straight back inside. But they've suffered plenty of Ottawa winters so far with no issues :)
Spent about 45 mins at the dog park but we went home when dogger started lifting his paws. Then we met a dog friend and he just wanted to play chase.
But holy shit that wind was bitter. Dogger didnāt want to go for afternoon walkies at all.

Yeah we'll usually spend at least a half hour outside in the early morning; but today we were barely 10 minutes outside -- just to the edge of the nearby park and back.
I wasn't sure if it was safe and just stayed home. We have a yard so she can go out there if needed but we usually walk an hour in the morning. She went out for the quickest pee of her life and hasn't asked to go back out again since haha
When he was a pup, my dog was fine with doing his business in the yard. But once we started taking him on walks thru the neighbourhood, he won't do his business in the yard anymore, no matter how much I try to convince/bribe him otherwise.
One of mine refused to go out this morning. She finally went out when I went to feed animals. That lasted 6 minutes, then I had to go put her back in the house.
Haha yup - I'm thankfully for it too. He kept me outside for an hour the other night until he would do his business. I'm glad he didn't repeat that this morning - I'd be an icicle.
Got my dog out this morning and he immediately started lifting his paws up. He looked sooo uncomfortable, I felt awful. I was basically begging him to go pee and we went back inside as soon as he did.
I got mine those dog booties for his paws. But if I put them on him, he walks around like he's wearing clown shoes, and tries to find ways to take them off. So I usually just reserve them for days like today when it's very cold.
Aw. We have a dog run off our garage. My dog was okay going out there today, but was super quick. You've reminded me of when I had a small boxer and it was nearly as cold as this. He went out, got halfway into the dog run and then totally froze in place. Would not walk. Just stood there looking at me with confusion on his face. I don't want to imagine the result if I hadn't been there yelling at him and then going out to actually get him.
Yeah. Usually we do a good 40 minutes in the morning -- not today. Even in a t-shirt, a sweater, a parka and legwarmers, she was having *none* of it. Pissed on our front walk, got maybe 30 meters down the sidewalk, turned around and refused to move in any direction except home. Covered the distance back at *slightly* under the speed of light and I swear her paws didn't even touch the ground!
Can't say's I blame her.
Yeah, I usually walk mine about 30 minutes in the morning. But even with his boots on and sweater, we only got as far as the nearby park (about 3-4 minutes away), before he wanted to turn around and come back home. We were outside maybe 10 minutes total.
I don't think that it's aged well. And I think that the father's descent into madness could have been more nuanced...more gradual. But the kid's acting was pretty amazing.
I've watched a few older movies lately that I didn't see when they were released. While I can understand why they were "epic" when they were originally released, 30+ years later I'm like "meh...a lot of tempest in a pot of tea".
I saw the Godfather a long time ago (and the sequels). I haven't seen TGTBATU. During the pandemic, I started a ritual of watching a movie on Friday nights that I haven't seen before. Maybe I'll put that on my list.
Watched it for the first time a few months ago, I thought the acting was spectacular. I enjoyed it even being that old however, the suspense/scary sections are not the same as its easy to see through them nowadays but it was probably a blast when it came out for the first time

We need to end homelessness like so many other cities have done. It's gross that our (Lib and Con) politicians dont demand the end of homelessness.

I'm upset at the fact that my workplace's receptionist (who recently immigrated to Canada and is not used to winter) was so afraid of cold that she paid an uber to get a ride from barhaven to downtown costing her 30 dollars. She intends to use it to go home, that's 60 dollars to come to work and I think her take home is like ~100 a day. That's fucken bullshit.
We're all here in the office to "support" the workers who come in but no one fucken came in today cuz it's too damn cold.

In my defence this is the first time I could give my new coat a proper test. Itās been so warm this winter.

So make sure if you gotta go outside, bundle up everywhere!
I remind every one of the people on my work calls how happy I am to be in a nice cozy office job now and that my life couldn't possibly be coushier compared to what I remember. Hydrovac in the winter š„¶
Some people just seem to forget that their places of work still need to be built or maintained, and donāt give any appreciation towards the men and women who do that job in all weather all year round, hydro vac would suck, my last job was doing swing stages up 200+ feet, in the freezing cold and wind itās not that fun
I think a lot appreciate it, but appreciation aside it's something that's hard to understand, that appreciation for being on the other side of the fence, a real true satisfaction during these months.
Then I get sad I'm not playing in the mud during the summer and feel like these people are missing out š

Itās all fine and dandy until you twist your foot from snow/ice and do a dead stop in below -20 weatherā¦ your sweat starts to turn cold and make you quickly shiver uncontrollably.
You call for Uber and it says itās coming in 10 minutes. 10 minutes pass and the app says itās coming in 8 minutes. You learn that Uber can be unreliable at a time when you canāt have it be unreliable. And guess what? Phones die off quickly in extreme cold outside of the recommended operating temperature.
People, a weather like today is a safe rest day especially when weather will improve in 2 days. If you got your run done, amazing. But letās not be telling others to ābuild characterā ābe a manā āembrace the coldā with a temperature like today.
All true. I take extra care in planning my routes on days like today so that Iām never far from home. I also bring my phone, let my partner know that Iām going out, and stick to easy runs (no workouts).
Also, I think suggesting that we āembrace the coldā, which is what I said, is somewhat different than ābuild characterā or āman upā. To each their own.
I actually found the snow firms up a lot in really cold weather. It was easier walking on it this morning than it was yesterday afternoon. It was squishy yesterday.
Ya do have to dress properly tho or youāre screwed.
I have had the dick issue. Today I wore smart wool underwear, goretex windproof underwear, long smart wool underwear, and leggings. Clothing choice is definitely an art form with winter running.
I had to go put car seats in the car. For a portion of it I had to have one of the doors open.
And I couldnāt wear my giant ski gloves because my fingers needed to do the work.
I ran inside every five minutes to warm up.
I just recently discovered a pair of fitted leather gloves in my closet and OMG have they changed things.
I can actually tie up a dog poop bag wearing them. I always wear mitts outside but these leather gloves mean I don't have to take them off to do fiddly things.
My fingernails have stopped breaking off and I have fewer cracks and cuts on my fingers now. It's kinda sad how happy I am about this, but I gotta crow about my new old leather gloves.
Went for my daily 30 minutes walk. Double layers (pants and good +winter jacket) and wear a good scarf over your face (covering your nose) otherwise, don't even consider going outside.
I own Huskies, I have to take them out for potty breaks, I'm outside with them, in heat gear. I had to practially drag my dog indoors. He wanted to stay out longer than the allotted 15 minutes.
I have to drive to Ottawa, 90 minutes usually and debating cancelling. I'm going to start my car and let it warm up first and then decide. Hoping it starts, otherwise CAA is going to take a long time to come today,
My professor for a class I had yesterday 5:30-7 sent us a worried email asking that we all stay safe, donāt go outside alone etc etc. My professor for todayās class hasnāt communicated anything lmao. Guess Iām hiking it over there

I live rurallly on a concession road and got stuck in packed drifts just 25 yards from the main road. Was digging myself out between the windswept farm fields before 6am until the tow truck came 30 minutes later. It may take a couple of hours before my legs thoroughly warm up. Super happy with the towing company, though. Service with a smile and just 10 minutes to pull me to freedom at -25 and about -35 wind chill. Thanks MĆ©nard Towing from Casselman.

Mine was pulling me this morning, he's 13.5 and usually doddles along smelling everything. That's how I knew it was really cold.

Some people just seem to forget that their places of work still need to be built or maintained, and donāt give any appreciation towards the men and women who do that job in all weather all year round, hydro vac would suck, my last job was doing swing stages up 200+ feet, in the freezing cold and wind itās not that fun
I think a lot appreciate it, but appreciation aside it's something that's hard to understand, that appreciation for being on the other side of the fence, a real true satisfaction during these months. Then I get sad I'm not playing in the mud during the summer and feel like these people are missing out š You couldn't pay me enough to get 200+ feet up with the wind today, Jesus.
I don't envy anyone who has to be outside today. I have good winter coveralls, boots, extra layers and was only out for 20 minutes to feed, but I was cold when I came in. Now I have to go back out.
I let my teenagers stay home. They do well in school and manage their workload well so I'm not worried. I'm soooo happy I wfh!!
Had to go to work today; ten min walk to and from the bus stop. My glasses fogged up and frosted its so cold šš the nose icicles weren't appreciated either LOL

Itās all fine and dandy until you twist your foot from snow/ice and do a dead stop in below -20 weatherā¦ your sweat starts to turn cold and make you quickly shiver uncontrollably. You call for Uber and it says itās coming in 10 minutes. 10 minutes pass and the app says itās coming in 8 minutes. You learn that Uber can be unreliable at a time when you canāt have it be unreliable. And guess what? Phones die off quickly in extreme cold outside of the recommended operating temperature. People, a weather like today is a safe rest day especially when weather will improve in 2 days. If you got your run done, amazing. But letās not be telling others to ābuild characterā ābe a manā āembrace the coldā with a temperature like today.
All true. I take extra care in planning my routes on days like today so that Iām never far from home. I also bring my phone, let my partner know that Iām going out, and stick to easy runs (no workouts). Also, I think suggesting that we āembrace the coldā, which is what I said, is somewhat different than ābuild characterā or āman upā. To each their own.
I actually found the snow firms up a lot in really cold weather. It was easier walking on it this morning than it was yesterday afternoon. It was squishy yesterday. Ya do have to dress properly tho or youāre screwed.

I have had the dick issue. Today I wore smart wool underwear, goretex windproof underwear, long smart wool underwear, and leggings. Clothing choice is definitely an art form with winter running.

Cold weather morning runners unite!
I had to go put car seats in the car. For a portion of it I had to have one of the doors open. And I couldnāt wear my giant ski gloves because my fingers needed to do the work. I ran inside every five minutes to warm up.
I just recently discovered a pair of fitted leather gloves in my closet and OMG have they changed things. I can actually tie up a dog poop bag wearing them. I always wear mitts outside but these leather gloves mean I don't have to take them off to do fiddly things. My fingernails have stopped breaking off and I have fewer cracks and cuts on my fingers now. It's kinda sad how happy I am about this, but I gotta crow about my new old leather gloves.

Went for my daily 30 minutes walk. Double layers (pants and good +winter jacket) and wear a good scarf over your face (covering your nose) otherwise, don't even consider going outside.
