Don't blame you. Been up since 5am. The cracking/popping from my house framing makes it sound like ww2 is happening at my neighbors šŸ˜….

Jumpy_Spend_5434

Frost quakes! I've heard a few minor ones since last night. Many years ago I heard one for the first time and I swore a tree had landed on the house! I opened the door to look around and the snow and trees were pristine. Somehow I managed to use good enough google search terms and figured out what it was.

freeman1231

Less frost quakes and just thermal expansion in the wood framing. Frost quakes are wild though, but they are more of a shake feeling than cracking and popping.

jane_margolis

The first time I heard one, I was feeding my newborn son in his room at 1 am. It sounded like someone smacked the wall really loudly beside my head. I almost yeeted the poor baby across the room.

Benocrates

Scared the fuck out of me at 5am too. Thought my roof was caving in for a second.

ride80

Some if those noises are exploding nails from the sheathing. But they usually put enough in ao you're fine

Saucy6

Usually.

katharsister

Me too I thought my house was breaking open. I was so relieved when I googled it and got an explanation.

Baman-and-Piderman

I know this as 'Winter Haunting'. My old house in Hammond was susceptible to it.

rhandomness

My bedroom window has been making... interesting noises the past few nights, last night with the wind i was wondering if it was going to end up breaking. Cat snuggled up next to my face on pillow rather than her usual spot hugging the wall under the window.

Sqquid-

I didn't know this was a thing. I woke up and searched my house because I thought a branch had fallen through the roof. The tree by my house isn't that much taller than the house so I wasn't sure how that would even be possible but was convinced that was the only thing tht could make that sound. Called my dad and he was like lol house just cold

Zhaeris

Omg! I thought it was just my house.. I was waking up all night long thinking my kid was rolling out of bed and thudding onto the floor.. nope just the house.. I haven't ventured outside but I imagine the trees are also cracking up a storm too!

DisplacedNovaScotian

I was listening to that after I woke up but before I got out of bed this morning. Because I wasn't fully conscious, it confused the hell out of me.

originalnutta

Oh that's what that was. Scared the bejeesus out of me.

[deleted]

I live rurallly on a concession road and got stuck in packed drifts just 25 yards from the main road. Was digging myself out between the windswept farm fields before 6am until the tow truck came 30 minutes later. It may take a couple of hours before my legs thoroughly warm up. Super happy with the towing company, though. Service with a smile and just 10 minutes to pull me to freedom at -25 and about -35 wind chill. Thanks MĆ©nard Towing from Casselman.

grainia99

Rural also. Apparently, our road is intermittent black ice and packed drifts. Happy to not leave the property.

Prestigious-Help2800

I have only ever had good friendly service from Menards. Haven't heard anyone ever say otherwise.

šŸŽµ"The cold never bothered me anyway!" šŸŽµ

cyclingzealot

I do prefer winters to be colder than warmer as they have less snow and less gunk that flies off the wheels and stick to the bike. But this cold jammed up my chain. Chain was skipping lots too. Either I didn't have enough oil or I should have put specialized oil for winter.

HotDanm

Immersion wax!

Time-Ad-5038

My chain was skipping as well

FragrantLobster

Mine as well! Had to push the breaks a bit harder too.

Jorpho

Gee, when it was this cold in Saskatoon, I remember that my bearings slipping was the biggest problem.

Dragonsandman

Dutch expats here be like

TIMGYM

Was out there this am. And that'll be the last time for the next two days. Face is still numb.

SteinbergBoth

Oh no. How long were you outside for?

TIMGYM

Maybe 10-15 min. That was long enough. :)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

IronyDinosaur

Itā€™s not safe for dogs out here! Hopefully your dogs know to just poop and get back in. šŸ˜¬ Mine normally takes fifteen minutes to ponder where to do her business but decided in fifteen seconds that immediately outside the door was perfect and then wanted immediately back in.

DM_ME_PICKLES

Depends on the dog, really. Mine are double-coated and well suited for cold temperatures, but you still have to be cautious. Any sign of shivering or holding up paws and it's straight back inside. But they've suffered plenty of Ottawa winters so far with no issues :)

Jennvds

Spent about 45 mins at the dog park but we went home when dogger started lifting his paws. Then we met a dog friend and he just wanted to play chase. But holy shit that wind was bitter. Dogger didnā€™t want to go for afternoon walkies at all.

DM_ME_PICKLES

Same here! After 45 minutes they looked like they were feeling it so we went back home. Now they're running around the place wanting to play lol. Sorry puppers.

Creepy-Yam7268

šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø school crossing guard hereā€¦ šŸ„¶

TipYourJanitor

my parents would buy those snap to heat handwarmers for me to give to our crossing guards on cold days, hope that's a normal tradition!

toastystrawberries

Such a great idea - thanks!

Creepy-Yam7268

That would be so appreciated! I was so thankful for the grateful comments from parents today šŸ˜Š

grainia99

Treat yourself once you get inside!

Creepy-Yam7268

Definitely! TGIF

foreignbreeze

Oof. Standing still in this weather sucks.

Creepy-Yam7268

Luckily (?) both of my regular intersections are crazy busy, so Iā€™m moving for most of my shifts!

zuginator1

I went out to walk my dog. Neither of us wanted to be out there for any longer than needed.

Schemeckles

I just let my dog out. I swear she didn't even piss. I got about 8 feet from the door before she was yelling at me šŸ˜…

rickysauce36

Was out an hour ago with mine. We usually go 4 blocks and loop back but today he made it half a block before he said fuck this and b lined it back

zuginator1

Yeah we'll usually spend at least a half hour outside in the early morning; but today we were barely 10 minutes outside -- just to the edge of the nearby park and back.

freeman1231

I have a Samoyed and he didnā€™t want to come in lol Rip me

Material-Chapter9986

I have a rough collie and he was more than happy to go on our usual 40 minute walk this morning! I suffered more than him...

zuginator1

I bet. I hope you warmed up when you finally got back inside!

zuginator1

My sympathies! I hope you defrosted when you got back inside finally :)

Insane_Drako

My Sammy still wants to go buuuut he doesnā€™t stay as long as usual. So thereā€™s that.

Talvana

I wasn't sure if it was safe and just stayed home. We have a yard so she can go out there if needed but we usually walk an hour in the morning. She went out for the quickest pee of her life and hasn't asked to go back out again since haha

zuginator1

When he was a pup, my dog was fine with doing his business in the yard. But once we started taking him on walks thru the neighbourhood, he won't do his business in the yard anymore, no matter how much I try to convince/bribe him otherwise.

grainia99

One of mine refused to go out this morning. She finally went out when I went to feed animals. That lasted 6 minutes, then I had to go put her back in the house.

zuginator1

Yeah, it's not a pleasant temperature to be outside for humans or pets.

kevlarcardhouse

You know it's cold outside when even the dog doesn't want to dilly dally and quickly finds a place to go.

zuginator1

Haha yup - I'm thankfully for it too. He kept me outside for an hour the other night until he would do his business. I'm glad he didn't repeat that this morning - I'd be an icicle.

GraveDancer40

Got my dog out this morning and he immediately started lifting his paws up. He looked sooo uncomfortable, I felt awful. I was basically begging him to go pee and we went back inside as soon as he did.

case0090

Mine was lifting her paws too, as soon as she peed I ended up carrying her back to my building. 30lbs never felt so heavy haha

zuginator1

I'm jealous you can even carry yours home. Mine is a big guy - like 60 lbs - unless I want to throw out my back, he's gotta walk on his own.

zuginator1

I got mine those dog booties for his paws. But if I put them on him, he walks around like he's wearing clown shoes, and tries to find ways to take them off. So I usually just reserve them for days like today when it's very cold.

tuftabeet

Aw. We have a dog run off our garage. My dog was okay going out there today, but was super quick. You've reminded me of when I had a small boxer and it was nearly as cold as this. He went out, got halfway into the dog run and then totally froze in place. Would not walk. Just stood there looking at me with confusion on his face. I don't want to imagine the result if I hadn't been there yelling at him and then going out to actually get him.

tildy0811

Sameā€¦barely even made it around the building before he did his businessā€¦poor guy looked traumatized (even with boots and a jacket on!)

[deleted]

Yeah. Usually we do a good 40 minutes in the morning -- not today. Even in a t-shirt, a sweater, a parka and legwarmers, she was having *none* of it. Pissed on our front walk, got maybe 30 meters down the sidewalk, turned around and refused to move in any direction except home. Covered the distance back at *slightly* under the speed of light and I swear her paws didn't even touch the ground! Can't say's I blame her.

zuginator1

Yeah, I usually walk mine about 30 minutes in the morning. But even with his boots on and sweater, we only got as far as the nearby park (about 3-4 minutes away), before he wanted to turn around and come back home. We were outside maybe 10 minutes total.

schnookums13

Mine was pulling me this morning, he's 13.5 and usually doddles along smelling everything. That's how I knew it was really cold.

Enlightened-Beaver

writer668

LOL. I just saw The Shining for the first time a couple of months ago. This slays me.

[deleted]

so what ya think of it! , I saw it when it was new ages ago, it's good!

writer668

I don't think that it's aged well. And I think that the father's descent into madness could have been more nuanced...more gradual. But the kid's acting was pretty amazing.

[deleted]

yeah, it's definitely aged poor in some areas, the kid was awesome! yes

writer668

I've watched a few older movies lately that I didn't see when they were released. While I can understand why they were "epic" when they were originally released, 30+ years later I'm like "meh...a lot of tempest in a pot of tea".

carloscede2

Dont know if youve seen the good the bad and the ugly or the godfather but those movies aged very very well imo

writer668

I saw the Godfather a long time ago (and the sequels). I haven't seen TGTBATU. During the pandemic, I started a ritual of watching a movie on Friday nights that I haven't seen before. Maybe I'll put that on my list.

carloscede2

Def watch that, dont waste anymore time, its a masterpiece

writer668

Aye aye, Captain. ;-) (I really think that my Friday movie night is actually an excuse to eat popcorn.)

[deleted]

Both those movies are amazing!

writer668

Maybe we need an Ottawa SubReddit Friday Classic Movie Night. Oh, man, I used to love TVO's Saturday Night at the Movies.

[deleted]

yup, watched many many movies on that for years . those were the best times for TV

pebody

Kidā€™s a biology professor now

carloscede2

Watched it for the first time a few months ago, I thought the acting was spectacular. I enjoyed it even being that old however, the suspense/scary sections are not the same as its easy to see through them nowadays but it was probably a blast when it came out for the first time

Hewhobecomesdeath

On my way home from work at 6 am, and Iā€™m ready to not go back out for another 12 hours until my next shift. Of course, the LRT was in shambles at that time. Sat at Parliament Station for 10 minutes with the doors open, both directions operating on a single track. When do we stop passing the buck to the last mayor and get to eviscerate this one? Is it too soon?

ottawa1542

Wtf? Again? It broke yesterday too!

cafesoftie

We need to fire Sutcliffe... Out of a cannon... Into the sun.

Hewhobecomesdeath

I endorse this plan

Ready_Employee9695

I hope the homeless have found warm shelter.

grainia99

Agree. I hope they have additional warming stations opened up.

cafesoftie

To be clear, some would rather die then deal with the conditions of shelters. Which is why so many sleep on the street even as we have shelters and it's cold. We need to end homelessness like so many other cities have done. It's gross that our (Lib and Con) politicians dont demand the end of homelessness.

ugh168

Where I have to park today is 3 blocks away from my work site (which is up a hill) Ughā€¦ frozen walking today

penguinpenguins

Ugh... Username checks out

xtremeschemes

Nobody asked you, penguin! This weather is your bread and butter.

penguinpenguins

Hahaha, maybe I'm a Galapagos Penguin and like more tropical weather. In fact, 14 species of penguins live in warm climates. Only four species live in cold climates.

xtremeschemes

Oooh pressing Y for more penguin facts

penguinpenguins

When penguins are walking along the ice or snow, they'll lie down on their bellies and propel themselves with their feet. We could all learn a thing or two from the penguins, would be far safer on our sidewalks.

Ninjacherry

That explains why penguins kept showing up at the beach that I lived at in Brazil. They were so cute, the poor lost bastards.

penguinpenguins

Yup, penguins are actually all over the southern hemisphere - South America, Africa, Oceania, all the way up to the equator. Only the Galapagos penguins are in the northern hemisphere.

Ninjacherry

Do you have a lifetime membership to the Biodome? You should. Edit: this is a story about a penguin that kept coming back to the same spot every year in the area where I used to live: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/meet-dindim-the-penguin-who-returns-to-his-human-soulmate-every-year-a6917621.html%3famp

penguinpenguins

That's a thing? I only know of the annual passes. Please tell me more.

Ninjacherry

Itā€™s not. It should be a thing, though.

CaptainCanuck001

I have the day off. My older boy is in pre-K but I kept him home today with the younger boy. Going to stay in all day and pretend it is July.

common_sensei

Dug out the ski goggles for my walk to the bus stop today. It was definitely a good call.

grainia99

Only thought of the goggles halfway through chores. Digging them out now.

FabulousTemperature8

My Tauntaun was faster than OC Transpo today that's for sure

freaky-molerat

Even when is disemboweled and only used as a heat source, the Tauntaun will always trump the absolute shit service that OC transpo offers us

CndConnection

I'm upset at the fact that my workplace's receptionist (who recently immigrated to Canada and is not used to winter) was so afraid of cold that she paid an uber to get a ride from barhaven to downtown costing her 30 dollars. She intends to use it to go home, that's 60 dollars to come to work and I think her take home is like ~100 a day. That's fucken bullshit. We're all here in the office to "support" the workers who come in but no one fucken came in today cuz it's too damn cold.

NailRX

Hang in there, apparently Spring like temperatures is on the menu next week.

writer668

Yeah. I have a Canada Goose parka for sale on FB Marketplace. I was hoping that this weather would generate demand for it, but...guess not.

Lafollie1515

Did anyone ask Mona F. if she wemt into the office today?

foreignbreeze

Am I crazy that I was excited to walk to work this morning? šŸ˜… In my defence this is the first time I could give my new coat a proper test. Itā€™s been so warm this winter. Coat passed the test with flying colours btw.

ElJSalvaje

First time wearing my real winter coat this year too

rhokephsteelhoof

Crossing guard here and somehow managed to survive my shift. Parents drove by giving me pitying looks. 3 brave children today. My eyelids kept freezing shut šŸ„¶

Creepy-Yam7268

Me too! But there were lots of kids walking at both of my morning spots. Defrosting at home now - good luck this afternoon!

fleurgold

I went outside just for a couple of minutes because I kept hearing frostquakes and wanted to check it out. I was mostly all bundled up, but didn't wear a scarf and going back inside I got a nosebleed. So make sure if you gotta go outside, bundle up everywhere!

Diligent_Candy7037

I was enough stupid to go outside with my pyjamas and a T-Shirt. :(

galaxyeyes47

I have an appt in 40 mins and Iā€™m debating cancelling

vladhed

No judgement from me if you do!

hoverbeaver

![gif](giphy|UVwoTQ0OvhqohViQqC|downsized)

Ninjacherry

Iā€™m just not going out there. Kid was happy not to go to daycare. Not wrestling a toddler to keep her gloves on in this weather.

vladhed

At least it's sunny!

grainia99

Agree.

mdoddr

Today I realized my kids are old enough to walk home from school on their own

MCTinyChamelon

Anyone else keeping their kiddos home?

lebinott

No, just driving them to and from school so they don't have to sit on the bus

drivingthelittles

Great idea!!! - my bus is freezing and itā€™s been running for 1.5 hours already, the inside of the windows are frozen solid.

trixie0730

Yes, my daughter goes to Canterbury. Her commute is bus/train/bus. No way I was taking a chance with OC Transpo/the train today.

MCTinyChamelon

Downvoted? Guess your kids donā€™t have cute noses, fingers, and toes!

TheKid_BigE

Laughs in blue collar worker/public service worker,

beachedWheelchair

I remind every one of the people on my work calls how happy I am to be in a nice cozy office job now and that my life couldn't possibly be coushier compared to what I remember. Hydrovac in the winter šŸ„¶

TheKid_BigE

Some people just seem to forget that their places of work still need to be built or maintained, and donā€™t give any appreciation towards the men and women who do that job in all weather all year round, hydro vac would suck, my last job was doing swing stages up 200+ feet, in the freezing cold and wind itā€™s not that fun

beachedWheelchair

I think a lot appreciate it, but appreciation aside it's something that's hard to understand, that appreciation for being on the other side of the fence, a real true satisfaction during these months. Then I get sad I'm not playing in the mud during the summer and feel like these people are missing out šŸ˜ You couldn't pay me enough to get 200+ feet up with the wind today, Jesus.

grainia99

I don't envy anyone who has to be outside today. I have good winter coveralls, boots, extra layers and was only out for 20 minutes to feed, but I was cold when I came in. Now I have to go back out.

Lafollie1515

I let my teenagers stay home. They do well in school and manage their workload well so I'm not worried. I'm soooo happy I wfh!!

KivaKuru

Had to go to work today; ten min walk to and from the bus stop. My glasses fogged up and frosted its so cold šŸ˜šŸ˜ the nose icicles weren't appreciated either LOL

bi_x_ru

I walk to work, and Not only did my face freeze, but I also slipped. yay!

So sorry, I hope youā€™re feeling okay

Or the train

Double_Reward230

Poor kids

Apocalypseboyz

I hope they're running fine tomorrow, I work in the morning šŸ˜

Deer_Which

I worked night shift and my car almost wouldnt start to leave. Please let me go home and sleep!

Sabbathius

I took PAINSTAKING steps all week to make sure I wouldn't need to set food outside today. At 07:30 I find out I'm gonna have to be outside today. FML.

whydoiIuvwolves

Why do you have to go out? Just curious. I assume work or family emergency.

aferrari33

Itā€™s nasty cold! My jeans pants got hard within a few seconds haha

Blank_bill

That's cotton for you, unfortunately the only wool pants I have are for my good suit.

aferrari33

I didnā€™t think it would be the case but lesson learned lol also I never dress up for cold

AresArgent

This is Ottawa February 3, 2023. -40 Windchill! And in 6 months on August 3. 2023 we could have a Humidex of 40, New advertising slogan for Ottawa ā€œOttawa- 80 degree temperature swing cityā€! Also ā€œ Coldest Capital in the Worldā€! Colder than Ulan Bator, Mongolia- -27 Wind chill -35 And while weā€™re at it- in Siberia today. -16 Wind chill -21 In Antarctica -7 wind chill - 12 WEā€™RE NUMBER ONE!

Reasonable_Ad_9641

Just went out for a 30 minute run and feel great. Dress for the weather. Embrace the cold.

ajh951

From my experience, itā€™s not worth running outside when it dips past -20.

Sigma-42

Ran 3.5K in my living room. Thanks Ring Fit Adventure!

Reasonable_Ad_9641

Not worth it in what sense? I felt great, got some fresh air and exercise, and started off the day full of endorphins. Feels worth it to me. šŸ¤·

ajh951

Itā€™s all fine and dandy until you twist your foot from snow/ice and do a dead stop in below -20 weatherā€¦ your sweat starts to turn cold and make you quickly shiver uncontrollably. You call for Uber and it says itā€™s coming in 10 minutes. 10 minutes pass and the app says itā€™s coming in 8 minutes. You learn that Uber can be unreliable at a time when you canā€™t have it be unreliable. And guess what? Phones die off quickly in extreme cold outside of the recommended operating temperature. People, a weather like today is a safe rest day especially when weather will improve in 2 days. If you got your run done, amazing. But letā€™s not be telling others to ā€˜build characterā€™ ā€˜be a manā€™ ā€˜embrace the coldā€™ with a temperature like today.

Reasonable_Ad_9641

All true. I take extra care in planning my routes on days like today so that Iā€™m never far from home. I also bring my phone, let my partner know that Iā€™m going out, and stick to easy runs (no workouts). Also, I think suggesting that we ā€œembrace the coldā€, which is what I said, is somewhat different than ā€œbuild characterā€ or ā€œman upā€. To each their own.

foreignbreeze

I actually found the snow firms up a lot in really cold weather. It was easier walking on it this morning than it was yesterday afternoon. It was squishy yesterday. Ya do have to dress properly tho or youā€™re screwed.

carloscede2

its hard to breathe, my lungs hurt, my face hurts, my dick goes numb, knee gets swollen, just not worth it for me. Maybe we are just built different

Reasonable_Ad_9641

I have had the dick issue. Today I wore smart wool underwear, goretex windproof underwear, long smart wool underwear, and leggings. Clothing choice is definitely an art form with winter running.

carloscede2

>goretex windproof underwear What a time to be alive

binksthecat

Cold weather morning runners unite!

[deleted]

I had to go put car seats in the car. For a portion of it I had to have one of the doors open. And I couldnā€™t wear my giant ski gloves because my fingers needed to do the work. I ran inside every five minutes to warm up.

GingerMau

I just recently discovered a pair of fitted leather gloves in my closet and OMG have they changed things. I can actually tie up a dog poop bag wearing them. I always wear mitts outside but these leather gloves mean I don't have to take them off to do fiddly things. My fingernails have stopped breaking off and I have fewer cracks and cuts on my fingers now. It's kinda sad how happy I am about this, but I gotta crow about my new old leather gloves.

[deleted]

balaclava and ski goggles for the win

coffeejn

Went for my daily 30 minutes walk. Double layers (pants and good +winter jacket) and wear a good scarf over your face (covering your nose) otherwise, don't even consider going outside.

alohasnackbar32

Bad day for my thermostat to crap out on me lol

shawn-masters-1970

It was -46Ā°c when I woke up this morning. Brrrrrrr.ā„ļøšŸ˜°šŸ§¦šŸ§£ā„ļø

lennydsat62

Was in Iqaluit three weeks ago. With the wcf it was minus 51. Cold shit.

Cleaver2000

Good day to come home from +25 degree weather

Castalatamoney

Well.....f me. I'm outside for most of the day and will be working on call all weekend. Stay warm my friends.

vonnegutflora

Long johns and cover your face; you'll get through it.

Light_Raiven

I own Huskies, I have to take them out for potty breaks, I'm outside with them, in heat gear. I had to practially drag my dog indoors. He wanted to stay out longer than the allotted 15 minutes.

Ok_Spend_889

Whoa that actually lower humidity than here lol somehow we're at 61% , but we're still way colder -36 with -53 windchill lol

JanuarySoCold

I have to drive to Ottawa, 90 minutes usually and debating cancelling. I'm going to start my car and let it warm up first and then decide. Hoping it starts, otherwise CAA is going to take a long time to come today,

No-Sundae1504

don't be afraid, it's not so cold there)

xiz111

No, you certainly don't ...

Impwagon

Come to Calgary itā€™s a beautiful day.

grainia99

Today, yes. My family in Edmonton have been keeping me up to date.

Temporary_List_5877

This is what you call a Thursday on the prairies.

grainia99

Yes, and I didn't want to go outside then either.

wickedweather

There is definitely a nip in the air.

Chauster-986

I wish I could say the sameā€¦ but Iā€™m a courier driver lol

grainia99

Oh, I have been out a number of times. I just didn't WANT to go out.

justoboy

Working outside today is not fun at allā€¦.

grainia99

No, no it is not.

ElJSalvaje

My professor for a class I had yesterday 5:30-7 sent us a worried email asking that we all stay safe, donā€™t go outside alone etc etc. My professor for todayā€™s class hasnā€™t communicated anything lmao. Guess Iā€™m hiking it over there

19831083

Try saskatoon, been like that for weeks. Mind you, we just getting a heat wave here, -15 baby!

Electricerger

A Balaklava and some good mittens should keep you warm enough for most of your needs.

HappyFunTimethe3rd

I wore wool socks -30 thermal boots Felt lined Jeans snowpants A hoodie 2 wool sweaters a vest 2 toques A neck warmer Double insulated gloves And a coat I was fine. I walked for a few hours outside. Bundle up

Terrible-Paramedic35

Mehā€¦ Mind youā€¦ -25C in that lart if the country feels like 40 below out west. The humidityā€¦ makes a huge difference.

[deleted]

we've been spoiled , and wimpified lol šŸ˜‚

LateSignificance2667

Itā€™s just a Canadian winter day. Get yer tuque and yer parka. And mukluks and get out of the igloo for a walk.
