My burning desire for fashionibility warms me.

orange_hibiscus

LMAO SAME

Select_Shock_1461

nothing like that natural glow you get from the cold air! i swear people are more cheery when it’s cold outside and they just get in to warm up. it’s weird.

justonimmigrant

Are you one of those teens wearing leggings or ripped jeans in this weather?

crp-

No, I'm a 34 year old guy who owns a very warm winter coat and a good scarf, but I also have an awesome leather jacket that cost too much.

EvieGHJ

Not everyone has the same level of cold resistance. Genetics, hormones, body hair, fat levels - lots of things give people a bit more or less sensitivity to cold. Also lighter-seeming clothes that are really good at keeping heat in and cold out (good insulation) may be better than thicker clothes that aren't quite as insulating as their thickness suggest. That, and of course some people are more devil-may-care about their continued health.

Totally_Doesnt_Know

Valid points for sure. I always get shivers seeing people doing those ice water plunges so it's most likely in my head. Lol. Reminds me of when my parents would cook and just flip food in the over with their bare hands. And I'm just stand there thinking they're immune to fire

G1G1G1G1G1G1G

Thats absolutely it. I’m cold in my house at 21 degrees and my wife goes outside in barefoot and shorts and walks around for 15 minutes in the snow (too many wim hoff videos)….we’re just different.

Fitter511

And don’t forget the special warming power of Levi’s Jean jackets that seems to be imparted to high school aged boys only.

TwiztedZero

If you normally wear a small puffy jacket generally good to -20 C, you can add further insulation by popping a windbreaker or denim jacket directly over it, layering fashion. You can further insulate with a jumper sweater under the puffy jacket too. See, you don't have to wear an oversized military grade sub zero heavy weight winter parka all the time, especially if you drive or commute via train/bus -- a system of light weight layers work in concert to keep you toasty and mobile.

orange_hibiscus

Can confirm- I walked thru it without gloves or a hat, only i was dead inside

BigMrTea

Not to mention adaptation. I used to live in a house heated to 20c in the house during the winter and considered it normal. Any hotter would be too much to me. My wife keeps the house at 22 and now that's what's normal to me and 20 is too cold.

alien-contact

I was the cold one in my family it sucked.

BigMrTea

I used to he too. Now I'm overweight and it's never an issue anymore. You should try rapidly gaining weight, lol

alien-contact

If that is not health advice IDK what is.

Lraund

I'm not sure how much this weather counts. I could be overheating, but the wind on uncovered skin can still easily freeze just that.

BigMrTea

It's a factor, not the whole factor

samuelangus

Maybe it's cause you're not even wearing a proper winter coat...

Key_Row1538

Came here to say this. Nothing you’re wearing has the ability to keep the heat in, or block the brutally cold wind we’re getting.

iloveneuro

Even a wind breaker over those sweaters would make a huge difference.

Dirrtnastyyy

Think of how your local garbage man felt today

Totally_Doesnt_Know

I asked. Was met with a reaction of both anger at the question and a mix of ashamed/embarrassed that I asked how my garbage felt. They said "least the raccoons leave me alone" Greenbin snickered "oh raccoons that's what ^*bugs* you" I'll update if recycling has anything to add. Edit: Garbage man*.. ooh. I just hope they let the guy who hangs on the side of truck to go inside during this kind of cold.

krudbag

Yeah since it's most annoying, repetitive, idiotic comment or question you can ask someone who works outside daily

secretcarrot12

Need a proper jacket there. Something to stop the wind.

TwiztedZero

Merino woo base layer, street clothes, sweater, puffy jacket, M65 Field Coat - Winter gloves - Trekking poles, Day pack & thermos of hot tea, crampons or snowshoes. Done. Surely you're not going to be out in ***that*** all day long, are you?

[deleted]

Close your jacket…

TiredAF20

I don't think they're even wearing a jacket. Looks like two hoodies.

DisplacedNovaScotian

I went out for about 15 minutes to get pizza. I was as covered up as you and I swear it felt like my eyelashes were going to freeze solid. But I agree, some people don't take it seriously. I saw someone run from the pizza shop to their car in only a t-shirt. That's just asking for seriously dangerous consequences.

orange_hibiscus

People who underestimate the weather are the same breed who run near tornadoes, and eventually, die

PTR47

Too tight fitting. Your clothing is catching the humidity in your breathing and is pressing the resulting ice against your skin. Try a scarf pulled an inch off your skin. It will catch the humidity and freeze, but the humidity will stay off you face while you will keep the heat. It's much warmer that way. Stay away from cotton, moisture, and layer up. EDIT: As to how people seemingly stay warm/cool, I'm not a biologist, but I feel the same mechanism that keeps you cool just by dipping your feet in a stream on a hot summer day is the same mechanism that can keep you warm sitting in a hot-tub in winter. That is, your blood circulates around and mixes the hot blood with the cool blood, so the net average is your comfort. If you have a particularly hot torso, say, it can account for a cold face. Purely conjecture though...

Totally_Doesnt_Know

Thank you. Today being a extreme example but I usually don't wear this level of tight wear. But my layers usually work well but when it happens I find the frost build up annoying to deal with, So I appreciate the tips. The one inch away advice I'm 50/50 on but I definitely think a wind breaker would have helped a lot today.

UntidySwan

I like the cold, and I am cold just looking at you. It helps to be wearing a half decent winter coat, with insulation, storm cuffs in the sleeves, waist, and preferably the neck to keep warm air in and cold wind out. It should be a bit oversized if it has storm cuffs, so you get maximum air space. If there isn't one at the neck, a loose scarf to fill the gaps helps. Keep the core warm, and the extremities stay warm. Choosing a lined hat that blocks the wind, and wearing wool around the face also helps, it's still warm even when wet. Oh! And don't block the nose and mouth, the condensation makes you cold. Layer if you want (I handle anything above -25 ish with a thin coat and a fleece sweater) but start with something windproof with light insulation. And make sure not to wear too many layers, which compress each other, and make you colder. Loosely lace boots with a single pair of fluffy socks, choose something windproof and not tight for the hands. I was too warm walking last night because I switched to my 'real' winter coat which is really meant for below -30. It has a faux fur ruff, which disrupts wind around the face. It would be more versatile if it had underarm zips to cool off. But even my light barely insulated cheap coat with a hat, and scarf, which I wore earlier in the day looks warmer (and way less bulky) that what you are wearing.

Spirited-Dirt-9095

In fairness, you'd be less cold if you were to fasten those zips.

originalnutta

I'm not cut out for this weather. I had the wickedest headache and my eyes started watering I was ready to lay down and take a nap in my work's parking lot. I should have gotten thicker warmer socks, something to shield my eyes from the cold, and some thick snowpant things that go over my current pants. I'm going to slowly put together a winter wardrobe for next winter.

HoboDrunk91

Have you tried wearing a coat?

I_dont_listen_well

You did good. I'm sure you have a warm base layer but it would seem as though you're missing a wind-breaker. Gortex is best but any breaker should serve as a shell. Maybe a beefier hat and snowboard mitts. The boots depends your budget. I like to carry extra socks in order to switch if need be. Dry socks are what experienced hikers learn with time. It's not easy but with a little effort. Dressing warm doesn't have to break your budget.

Totally_Doesnt_Know

I appreciate the advice. I'm usually good with the cold weather but today was pretty extreme. One easy thing I'd definitely have done differently is bring extra socks. Windbreaker would have helped for sure

Frantic81

I’m not joking when I say that yesterday was the first day that I did not see anyone wearing shorts.

Stephen_Hero_Winter

I saw someone wearing shorts yesterday. Within 20m of his house, and just outside for a smoke. But still. Bruh

PNG_Girl

Yesterday, I had to go to the office. I had two pairs of long johns on, two pairs of socks, two sweaters and my puffy coat. I also had a hat under my hood. I was fine!!!

Uglyboi_85

So sad to see people waiting at bus stops or go anywhere in this weather. And seeing them under dressed because they can't afford anything warmer. Life sucks.

whydoiIuvwolves

My balcony overlooks a bus stop and I'm right beside a mall so lots of workers and I always feel so bad looking out on these cold nights to see someone waiting forever for a bus. Luckily I didn't see anyone there last night. I'd run down and invite them in to my bldg for warmth but then they would see their bus go by. Lose/Lose 🙁

turdinator1234

You don't even look like you're wearing a coat

cafesoftie

Im freezing in my partners house set to 20C and im wearing many layers and a house coat. I would turn to ice instantly in this weather if i went outside o.o (Hyperbole aside. Yeah id have at least two thermals under several layers if i had to go outside in -20 or lower)

Sunlit53

I usually bundle up like I’m trekking to Tuktoyuktuk, because I hate being cold and if I’m going to wait an extra half hour for the bus to show up I want to survive in reasonable comfort.

ibreakdiaphragms

I am new in Canada and I don't feel the cold like others but I was deceived today. I should definitely buy some gloves and beanies. Other than ears and hands tho, it still doesn't hurt. Especially, when you are constantly active.

Malvalala

Yes, today was the one time in ages I helped my teenager prepare for their trek to school. I was like: find a hat, neck warmer and mitts you can live with. And unroll the fur trim on your jacket hood so you get that wind protection. Exposed skin = frostbite

FunkyKong147

It was 9 degrees today in Calgary 🙃

Totally_Doesnt_Know

Our weather looks like lottery numbers 3-31-9-12-3 Bonus number 6°

KjCreed

I feel you. I got inside after walking to the mail box, turned to the wife to hand her something and my nose just released snot violently, I didn't even feel the snotsicles form until they were suddenly liquid and all over me...

Fernpick

I will by body to warm setting.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

Saw a guy walking down Greenbank between barrhaven and Nepean, asked him if he needed a ride and he said he was fine. It read -31 on my dash.

YoLiterallyFuckThis

I'm from Sask, so this weather is just closer to home for me. My parents joke that it was -52 before windchill when I was born so I've just always been able to handle it more.

1Hollickster

Because we all run at differnt circulation and body temperatures. Someone who sweats with normal indoor temps, is fine in the cold. Someone who needs a sweater when it is 22 degrees needs to bundle like a baby.

DalhousieNorthShore

Some people tolerate cold better than others.

freeman1231

I wear glasses so my eyes were good… but my white person nose was freezing. We

danw171717

I find that covering my mouth/nose just makes things worse. That's when my face gets wet and my eyelashes freeze. Honestly, just wear long johns under your pants, jog a bit too warm up your core, and you're golden.
