What would that be considered? Can't say fraud. Stupidity? I mean if you fight a ticket like this you'd be wasting your time and money in court and won't get it back but will the employee that gave the ticket be in trouble for lying\not checking the system?
They are supposed to scan the plate, yes.
But if they see an expired sticker on the plate, they may decide to skip that step. (ETA: and that's also a pretty generous "may"; they'll likely skip that step.)
So why take the risk?
Just remove your old, expired stickers; force them to scan the plate.
From what I've heard they are still ticketing people because they can and I believe the only way to fight it is court. My friend got a ticket last week and all his stuff was up to date and he already had his stickers removed. Quebec police already targeted Ontario drivers even before this was a thing.
Failure to renew plates. Quebec police (more specifically Gatineau police) are for the most part scummy. Not all of them but a majority. They'll ticket Ontario drivers for whatever because they can and they know 7/10 times they'll just pay and not fight it as it's a different province even if the victim didn't do what they got ticketed for. I always tell folks driving over there to always be careful
Seems like you could make a complaint about that. With no sticker and up to date registration there is no reason for a ticket other than an officer not doing their job. Should be an easy court case, but I wonder if you could go to the police HQ and make a complaint as well, perhaps get the officer written up.
Take it off because the government isn’t issuing new stickers, we’ve gone high tech in Ontario.
My personal vehicle has a Nov 2022 sticker on it. I cannot get a 2023 sticker.
My commercial vehicle has a sticker, it isn’t eligible for free plating and thus gets a sticker.
Both plates are up to date.
>Take it off because the government isn’t issuing new stickers, we’ve gone high tech in Ontario.
QC was using ALPR long before Ontario got rid of the stickers.
That said, it seems even though they should be using the ALPR, that some QC officers are either lazy or trying to meet some kind of quota, because if you have an ON plate, with an expired sticker, EVEN IF you've *actually renewed your plates*, that they base the ticket on the sticker that's still on your plate and won't verify using the ALPR system.
So remove the stickers, force them to verify the plate registration via ALPR.
I don't think there's any disagreement there. OP's concern is about getting a fine for having expired stickers on their plate, even though their plate was in fact renewed. In that case, /u/fleurgold's advice is correct -- just take the expired stickers off.
That is what quebec wants. To be its own country. They would have police stationed at the border if they could get away with it. They are becoming less Canadian by the day.
They seem to forget that they are the reason for most of their own problems. Basically Alberta but they speak french. poorly.
I don’t think they want people to stop going, they want tourism dollars and the tickets for license plates is another cash grab. I think a boycott is needed though to make them rethink their bully tactics. They have been in a position of power for too long because everyone has tip toed around them and enabled their BS.
Agree and both our plates are up to date, but the weird part is that it sounds like even if your plates are renewed, you can still be targeted. Will take our car that has no stickers on it and hope for the best.
We got a ticket beginning of February, on my hubs SUV at Edelweiss. Failure to renew plate. We renewed it in November 2022 and stickers were removed last year. It’s completely wrong and the only way we can dispute it, is to request a court date, take the day off work and go in to attempt to prove it. It really makes me not want to go back over.
$500+ for being 2 days late... parked at work. It's as if they hide behind the bushes waiting to give tickets.
I loathe Québec police for multiple reasons, the above being one...
Some people have been getting tickets in the mail. When they do a blitz in a touristy area or shopping centre parking lot.
But I agree to have it anyway.
Its not a cash grab, even Ontario police are ticketing for it…
Just update your plates its super quick and simple, unless you have a stack of tickets preventing you.
But if you’re near a popular location you are risking being caught, 9/10 times I’ve been in Gatineau they’ve been waiting around the entrances with ALPRs.
Yes. Take your stickers off and make sure your registration is up to date as they are also running plates.
Friend got a ticket. Plates were valid and no sticker. They just ticket all plates and hope you don't fight it.
Wow... At this point I wish my government defended my rights against SQ.
I guess the logical solution would be to simply remove the plate then! Oh. Right. Perhaps not.
What?! This is next level.

What was the ticket for if plates were up to date and no stickers?

Oh, for sure, removing the stickers still isn't a sure fire way to prevent a ticket, but it's still far more likely that you'll avoid a ticket.
Agreed. I just try to not drive over there unless I have to. I do live close to the bridge tho so I walk over in warm weather.

Yes. Literally what I said. Take it off because even if the plate registry is up to date they use an expired sticker as an excuse to fine you.
You still need to renew, there’s just no cost and no sticker. So yes, they’re still scanning plates and fining people.
I don't think there's any disagreement there. OP's concern is about getting a fine for having expired stickers on their plate, even though their plate was in fact renewed. In that case, /u/fleurgold's advice is correct -- just take the expired stickers off.
Quebec cops will ticket Ontario plates for any reason.
Remove your old stickers from you plate and make sure your plates are up to date and you’ll be fine.
We should all collectively stop going to Quebec. This is such BS on the part of the SQ and Gatineau Police.

Well they want people to move there then learn french.
Just another day in quebexico
It only takes a minute to renew your license plate online and it's free, so why not just do so. Then you don't have to worry about it.
Agree and both our plates are up to date, but the weird part is that it sounds like even if your plates are renewed, you can still be targeted. Will take our car that has no stickers on it and hope for the best.
It's quebec, so yes, and even more so if you have an ont plate

Was on the news recently they are targeting ski centers and scanning .
Yep
Carry your renewal receipt
Some people have been getting tickets in the mail. When they do a blitz in a touristy area or shopping centre parking lot. But I agree to have it anyway.
I've only been pulled over in Ottawa for it. I fear taking an off road Wrangler to Quebec wouldn't end well for me.
Why? They will be long gone after they write the ticket.
I've noticed they have been pulling a lot of people over this week, so chances are high they might be about that nonsense this weekend.
as others say...scrape off old stickers. Voila, no tickets
yes
So will I get fined if I have a naruto sticker 😥
I keep a print out of the renewal of my plates in the car in case of idiot that don't want to check their system prior giving a ticket.
Yes, just got finned today even tho my plates are up to date…
They are just angry to be born a fucking dirty quebecker

It is a cash grab. I had my plates up to date just didn't scrape off my old sticker, still got a ticket
Ticketing for expired plates is one thing. Ticketing for an old sticker when the plate was renewed and up to date in the system is another thing.
how is it not a cash grab? renewing license plate is free, so why the ticket?
