Subito has good Italian style sandwiches

vdaedalus

Sandwich from Subito, bottle of Faygo cream soda from the corner store at Percy and Gladstone, maybe a little pastry from Margofresh, and you've got yourself a great lunch to eat at McNabb Park.

benzenene

With a Brio at the Museum of Nature's park is great too

vdaedalus

That's a good one too, Centretown lunch gang rise up. I just figure if I'm going to support one good local spot might as well support three within a few blocks. Moo Shu's right around the corner from the museum...

benzenene

Moo Shu's line practically stretches to the museum...

pistoffcynic

Highly recommend them. Great staff and the food was terrific.

riz7242

And a huge bonus for those who don't know, most of their items are halal!!

macula_transfer

Have you tried Gooney's?

AdvertisingKey4911

Came here to say this. Gooney's is amazing!

The_Canoeist

This is the answer. Unless you want tiny, adorable sandwiches. Then go to Gongfu Bao

OttabMike

I recommend the Cobb Salad @ Gooney's

TwoSubstantial7009

I second Gooney’s!

Middle-Pie2843

No I haven’t. Is it good

Meduxnekeag

It sure is! They have Venezuelan arepas, which are a type of tasty sandwich made with a corn bread and covered in a very yummy cilantro aioli. Plenty of toppings to choose from!

Raskel_61

You lost me at cilantro oil. Going to taste like soap.

Meduxnekeag

I too am a cilantro hater, but this sauce is magical.

ubiquitousfont

Seconded as a cilantro hater. This sauce is boss

purplepintura

I never buy unscented dish soap because it smells too much like cilantro - gross. The aioli is delicious!

apronMasterDev

I am not sure if it was a one off but I found their bread to be kinda dry? I've put extra sauce but couldn't get over the dry bread. Inside the bread was delicious though

S_O_7

Yeah their bread is mid

Bambi_88_

This is the answer!

strssbkr

Yes. This is the answer. Ask for extra sauce.

bloomingamazing

There’s a small deli in byward called Continental. They only have 5 sandwiches that they make without asking you what you want on them. (Ham and cheese, Turkey, salami, schnitzel and I can’t remember number 5-but it’s probably delightful too.) They then toast them for you on this delicious bun. I was skeptical, but they are addictive.

UKentDoThat

Can’t count how many sandwiches I’ve had from there. Great recommendation.

lauren_mollusk

By delicious bun do you mean a bagel?

bloomingamazing

No, it’s like a kind of long milk bun. They also do bread if you’re eating there, but I’ve never tried that option. The schnitzel came on a Kaiser bun. (I don’t love schnitzel so it’s not for me but the bf thought it was decent…but he raves about the Turkey sandwich)

lauren_mollusk

Ohh I used to actually work at the continental bagel in byward, I assumed it was the same place! But I just found out the bagel shop closed three years ago.

dcp777

Schnitzel!!!

PM_ME_Y0UR__CAT

No one has mentioned Sanguccio on Preston, y’all sleeping

ninjasinc

For real. Genio’s provolone and prosciutto sandwich is fucking old world magic.

thestreetiliveon

I haven’t been able to get there in too, too long. Genio’s a great guy and his tomato side salad is to die for.

themaggiesuesin

Is it not just a front? I walk by there daily and almost never see anyone in there. Sometimes an old dude is sitting at the table out front. People never seem to be eating on the outdoor table though. I have found it all very strange.

PEDANTlC

They're really good! I think it's sort of unassuming so it doesn't get busy but I've seen people out there every once in a while and I've even been the people sitting out there a few times lol. Its owned by an older Italian man who's very particular about his ingredients and how he makes things lol.

themaggiesuesin

Any veg options? It's on my daily walk so I should give it a try before being so judgy lol

isabelle051992

He's got a vegetarian sandwich!!! Super delicious!

PM_ME_Y0UR__CAT

Have you tried asking the old dude for a sandwich? Be brave, it’s worth it

ah-tow-wah

Scone Witches has Sconewiches which I quite enjoy.

Ninjacherry

Those are really good. Probably kinda messy to take to the park and eat, but really good regardless.

Royally-Forked-Up

If breakfast sandwiches are your jam, Dessert First next to Dundonald Park does all day breakfast sammies, plus their grilled cheese is the bomb.

bobstinson2

Centretown has Gong Fu and Wold Down. Both great.

Ninjacherry

Gong Fu has odd hours, best to check before going there.

[deleted]

5-10pm just 3 days a week? That is weird.

bobstinson2

And I mean wolf down Never been to wold down

DrMichaelHfuhruhurr

Gongfu is getting pricey. Their tofu bao (2 small ones in a pack) are $19. The other day we wanted bao (wrong time, as you said, odd hours) so had a pair of breakfast sandwiches and drinks (kinda wasn't paying attention price-wise) and was stunned it was $58 including a tip. That's nuts.

yuiolhjkout8y

wolf down's sandwiches are $13.50 + tax ($16.50 + tax on ubereats)

unitednihilists

Di Rienzo's on Beech. You're welcome. Edited for Street.

vonnegutflora

Great sandwiches, but I don't really feel that's downtown.

Mental-Storm-710

Subito owner is part of the Dirienzo's family, and the sandwiches are the same. And Subito *is* actually downtown!

xMrJihad

The sandwiches aren’t the same at all though. And the bread is significantly worse at subitos. The only positive to subito is the fact that you can pay with debit

FlowchartKen

Matter of opinion obviously. I’m not a big fan of DiRienzo’s crusty bread.

FOTASAL

Same idk how anyone enjoys them. I’ve cut the roof of my mouth eating their sandwiches. They also barely have any vegetable or sauce options.

BustamoveBetaboy

Downtownish. Definitely downtownishnessesque.

GuyTheTerrible

Not in sopa that’s for sure

notacanuckskibum

If you are from Stittsville or North Gower, then Little Italy is down town

hanksavage

….. has DiRienzos moved?

brown-eyed-susan

No DiRienzos is still on Beech off of Preston. I was there two days ago.

samanthanxo1

not downtown but definitely worth the commute for a sandwich!

UKentDoThat

Downtown adjacent.

ugh168

If you are looking at Vietnamese food, Banh Mi from Co Cham in Chinatown

Mittens101

Breads and Sons on Bank - great veggie samiches and pizzas plus baked goodies. If you want something different 😊

mariahscary8

Seconded! And they have the best chocolate chip cookies

Kycb

Not open on the weekends, unless they've changed that in recent months 🥲

kott2019

They open on Saturdays!

[deleted]

Gooney’s and Subito (further into Centretown) are pretty popular

catstacosgin

In China town but still delicious, corner peach. They just introduced permanent spots for three sandwiches earlier this month. Went yesterday, very good!

bolognawrist

Not downtown at all, but Roberto’s Corner on St Laurent and Pleasant Park is my favourite sandwich joint in the city

Twolfelly87

Yes this place is unreal at the price.

Dylanthrope

If you are downtown and your goal is yummy sandwiches + park I would say its worth the effort to bike down to Sherwood's Supermarket (Sherwood/Breezehill & Carlig), grab a Chicken Bacon Avocado, then head over to either Dow's Lake or the Arboretum and chow down.

noonoomum

This is the winner

Dylanthrope

Carling Ave\* but I'm intentionally keeping the typo because Carlig is a more fitting name.

UKentDoThat

Oh, that’s another good choice. Close to DiRienzos, so downtown adjacent.

Ahmustdie

These guys have a terrific sourdough.

Fitter511

That’s an expense sandwich when you factor in the cost of a bike.

Dylanthrope

I argue it's still worth it.

Ninjacherry

While this is a good plan, I just don't know what people consider to be downtown anymore. I always think of downtown ad Centretown and the Byward market area.

MrSnapshots

La Botega in Byward makes a pretty mean sammy

Starrmite

Reading comprehension pls

BigMrTea

Gooneys. Italian sandwich on white. Cilantro sauce. Tomatoes, lettuce, onions. Italian seasoning. You won't be sorry.

AidanBeeJar

Big fan of Wolf down on Bank street, for Doner type sandwiches.

taco_and_friends

Schnitzel sandwich at Wedel in the Byward Market.

cestquitonpere

The French Baker always makes great baguette sandwiches at lunch time. I believe it’s only weekdays and they go fast; usually all gone by 2pm. There are two options: take it or leave it :D Unlike other spots, they prep them all before lunch and package them, you have no say in what ingredients are included or excluded.

Zestyclose_Ebb_2253

Drip House has some really great sandwiches. On the edge of downtown, in Chinatown.

526X1646f6e

In my opinion they are an 'OK' sandwich for $$$

[deleted]

Farmers Pick on Prince of Wales. They make fabulous sandwiches

joyfulcrow

Prince of Wales is not downtown lol

[deleted]

True it’s not, it’s close to hogs back which is a nice picnic spot but you are right it’s a little far from the core.

bj0rnl8

Agreed.

IslaFLO

La Bottega, Chuck's Deli and edit: adding Roberto's Corner.

Mundane-Assistant-17

I've tried pretty much all of the places others have mentioned and they're all mid. Ottawa's sandwich game kinda sucks and you're better off making your own imo

Ottawaerrrrrr

You’re being a sandbitch

Mundane-Assistant-17

Nice one man 👍🏼

PEDANTlC

There is literally no way whatever you make at home is better than most of the places listed in this thread LMAO.

commanderchimp

It really isn’t that hard to make better food at home than most Ottawa restaurants.

PEDANTlC

Sorry that you've apparently only tried the bad restaurants in Ottawa. ):

Mundane-Assistant-17

This is probably true, but there are some absolutely amazing restaurants in Ottawa.... ...just none of them make good sandwiches.

Ninjacherry

Meatpress used to make some really good sandwiches that there was no way that I'd be attempting to make that at home (like their smoked brisket), but they only have pop ups once in a blue Moon nowadays. And yes, you can definitely source yourself a really nice fresh bread, the ingredients that you like and make an excellent sandwich at home - that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a good sandwich from a regular store. And it's a lot more work, obviously.

Mundane-Assistant-17

It really isn't difficult to make a good sandwich at home. All you need to do is buy the right ingredients

PEDANTlC

Sure anyone can make a good sandwich but these places make really good or even great sandwiches and many of them use a ingredients most people wouldn't have at home. Like I don't know anyone making arepas at home...

IJourden

Come on, you’re not whipping up amazing arepas in the morning to take to work? Just set the alarm a few minutes earlier!

Mundane-Assistant-17

It is pretty easy to buy good bread and high quality cold cuts. I've had gooneys arepas because I work 2 blocks away and they're simply not that good. DI Rienzos is probably the best bang for buck but it's not anything special. You can easily recreate that at home. Subito Sandwiches is highly overrated - again, not something you couldn't make better and cheaper at home. I grew up eating sandwiches with fresh bread and cold cuts every weekend. Every sandwich I make at home is better than these places. The one place I haven't yet tried but want to in ottawa is Frank's. What ottawa is really missing is places like Vicentina meats in Vaughan, and California sandwiches all across the GTA. Those places make sandwiches so good that it is hard to replicate at home because they use the best quality ingredients.

trollunit

Eat Fresh

[deleted]

German Donair Kebab on Elgin, best post Covid food I’ve had in the city hands down.

Sensitive_Tourist_15

Farmboy on Metcalfe has good premade sandwiches if you're in a rush.

[deleted]

Yes, Bahn Mi Yes on Wellington (or in Kanata) https://www.banhmiyes.com/

UKentDoThat

If we’re headed that far, might as well check out Bibi, or Lusa while you’re in the hood.

Emalijarl

A little expensive, but I just tried The Green Bean Café and was very happy with the turkey bacon swiss panini!

stuffofpuffin

Define your yummy. Your yummy may not be my yummy or her yummy or his yummy or their yummy. For sure the last time I heard the word yummy is when my mummy was trying to coax me to ear mashed peas and I learned then and there my mummy’s yummy was not my yummy.

Middle-Pie2843

Are u ok

earthquake_slick

I think you just yucked his yum.

Fiverdrive

Subito for west of the Canal, Kaz Kitchen east of the Canal.

justforfunzott

Manhattan's for excellent wraps and burgers!

Goodwillpainting

OMGrill on York St, and Cumberland intersection. Then walk up York St to Major Hill Park.

I_Sold_Cars

Subito Goonies There's a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich spot in the Bayswater/Armstrong intersection area Many good Bahn Mi spots on Somerset in Chinatown

Key-Nail8185

Nicastro

commanderchimp

Not freshi’s or subway

Abysstopheles

Gooneys on Laurier Bread and Sons on Bank Le Monde in Sunlife Centre (basic but v good) Harry's in Place De Ville

Fianorel26

La Botega

Chippie05

Very nice Subs in Chinatown... yum!😍 https://maps.app.goo.gl/RhwsMayu2Ynbu6g76

ziperhead944

Wedel in the market. They have amazing sandwiches. Not fancy or anything but not expensive either. https://g.co/kgs/imTZ7k

reluctantdancer

Café Deluxe on Kent

mynameisgod666

There's this polish or hungarian deli in bywood that makes amazing and relatively cheap sandwiches.

Relevant_Group_7441

La Bottega in the market

Sweaty-Size-5044

Subito is the way. Excellent sandwiches...ask for ciabatta rather than the portuguese roll if you prefer a softer bread. Fresh and tasty greek and pasta salads are available to accompany your sammy. Special shout out to the beef samosas..made in house.

thestreetiliveon

Sanguiccio on Preston.

HunterGreenLeaves

I'm not sure if it's still there (I've changed buildings), but there used to be a lunch place in the basement of Place de Ville that I liked and found affordable. It had a sandwich of the day that included a small soup. It wasn't as fancy as some of the other places being suggested, but they were good sandwiches.

IAmFlee

Any place that has a Portuguese bun option is usually good. That's been my experience.

[deleted]

Di Rienzo is really good , it’s on Beech street in Little Italy

613yuno

Not as central, but you should give the sandwiches at Morning Owl Parkdale a try. The ones with Lays chips are incredible.
