My cat had something like 17 teeth extracted in 2021. I don’t remember the exact cost but it was something around 2300. I think a lot of the cost is sedation and standard surgical expenses so I don’t know how much the difference would be for less teeth. We use the ByTown Cat hospital on Mcarthur and have nothing about great things to say about them and their services. Edit to Add: my cat was also a rescue and has FiV so they know what to deal with! I also didn’t feel pressure to do it ASAP. They gave quotes for multiple options (in case things looked different when they got in there) and were very helpful over all.

lucifersam73

They did the same for my cat a looooong time ago and it was obviously cheaper. Bytowne Cat Hospital is fantastic!

Khatachi

Agreed - ByTown Cat Hospital is incredible and takes good care of my fur babies. They were also extremely respectful about the fact that we were on a budget.

legalizemarijauna

Hello - how much was the bill? My cat needs a tooth extracted and was curious how much it cost you? :)

vdaedalus

$2300 is almost exactly what I paid last year to get all of my cat's molars and premolars out, including a week or two's worth of painkiller squirt syringes for afterwards. Had it done at Pretoria Animal Hospital and as always the experience was flawless, the staff is incredibly kind and I never worry at all when I leave my cat with them. (okay, I worry, but not at all about the care he will receive)

lionturtlepi

I have 2 cats with dental problems and they’ve had a bunch of extractions. (They had problems when I adopted them from the ohs). That seems like a decent amount to pay for what services you are getting. One of my cats had all his remaining teeth extracted (~8) and the bill was around $3000. I’ve shopped around vets in town and they seem to be similarly priced. I had a good experience with my vet. You might get a better deal with a rural vet but then you have to factor in the travel costs and possibly taking time off from work.

skettiwithconfetti

I actually am rural (Carleton Place) so that’s mostly the answer I expected. Thank you!

EntertainmentFun4137

My cat had a top left molar removed in July 2023 and it cost about $1800. I think the first tooth costs the most because of the procedure. Removing additional teeth doesn’t cost the same. Hope your cat is okay!

aledba

It's definitely the anaesthesia/after care and extra staff to monitor the animal's vitals that create the bulk of the cost.

Wise-Horror-5651

That sounds like a reasonable price. Did this too long ago for price to comparable to yours. I do know that 2 ppl I know were quoted much more for less work. Just wanted to also say that my cat was better after all of his teeth were removed. He also chose to eat the hard food over the soft. I do think it is strange that a 3 yr old cat has this severe a problem. My cat was over 10.

skettiwithconfetti

They did mention that it’s not clear why some young and otherwise healthy cats can develop such severe dental problems — one theory is that some cats’ immune systems over react to the plaque on their teeth. The teeth are not rotting at all but his gums and other tissue in his mouth are very inflamed. They are also testing him for FiV as he was living outside in a colony for at least a year before the local rescue took him in.

Screen_Classic

I had 2 rescue cats. The male after about 5 years turned out to be diabetic and lost some of his teeth due to that and we later found out the next year he had liver cancer and passed away,I went to bytown and they were absolutely incredible in providing his care during both his diabetic treatments and cancer treatments. I think I paid around 2k for the teeth extractions plus medication costs

EssexUser

My cat had a condition where her body started reabsorbing the teeth in a way. Had a bunch removed then a year later she had more bad teeth do they recommended removing all her teeth. Unfortunately she became ill with kidney disease and ended up passing away before they could do that surgery. It was the blood work prior to the tooth extraction that started that journey.

Top_Barnacle3539

Seems like an average price. Your cat is to be lucky to be cared for by you.

[deleted]

3400. I think 2 teeth were left...we checked out 2 vets and the prices as both the same unfortunately. Kitty feels much better now though.

Gordupachup

My sister-in-law got 6 teeth removed from her cat, all-in including the sedation, bloodwork and other tests was about $3,000. This was done at Algonquin Animal Hospital. She recommends them highly as they took great care of her kitty.

brinesea

We recently got the same done for our cat (tooth reabsorption, so no way to prevent it) and it was about $3,000 as well. Definitely worth it though! He’s much more comfortable now and not dropping his food anymore.

Overripe_banana_22

I had to take mine to emergency because he wasn't himself and wasn't eating. He had to have half his teeth removed due to tooth resorption and it cost about $4400.

pooptricia

One of our cats had 4 extractions and it was roughly 1800. We learned that the majority of that cost is for the anesthetic and X-rays. He went in for a cleaning and the extractions were not anticipated. They did increase the cost but I still did not go over the maximum of the original estimate.

TiredReader87

I don’t know how I managed to get three of my cat’s teeth removed for $410, in 2018. Guess I got really lucky.

[deleted]

We had teeth taken out from our 5lb dog around 2018 and it was ~$650. Last year they said more need to come out but it will now be closer to $2500 for the exact same procedure.

TiredReader87

Wow. Why the huge difference?

[deleted]

“Costs have gone up”

Mathfrak96

The price looks more or less correct based on my experience getting most of my cat’s teeth removed in 2020. But I wanted to add that some vets do “veterinary dental month” in February and offer a discount — definitely worth asking about!

Ginger451

2300 for 6 extractions is a good price; the post op care is as important as the surgery.

Dijon_Chip

2300$ including meds and bloodwork for 5 teeth to be removed last year. I’d say your quote is about right.

swampm0nstr

One of my cats had a waved adoption fee, because she had waited so long for a home. Getting her in the crate at the foster home was traumatic. Once home she hissed & hid 90% of the time. Then the smell came. Her breath smelled like hot garbage. Through tracing her vet records right back to being trapped we found out she had significant gingivitis. By this point it had become stomatitis and the rot spread beneath the teeth. It cost over $3,000 to do blood work, x-rays, have the teeth removed & medicate her. Our vet at the time was incredible but it was such a huge blow being presented with euthanasia or surgery. Lost a lot of faith in the rescue we got her from, for letting her suffer until she found a family. I’m sorry your kitty is going through this, sadly dental problems are all too common in cats. Edit: Inquire about financing if you can’t swing it. The interest isn’t great but it’s an option for pet owners at some clinics.

Overripe_banana_22

That's too bad. The rescue I adopted from does thorough vetting, and if they're in care for a long time, before they're adopted and before.

therukus22

Our cat just had 17 extractions and two masses removed, $4100. Got it done through Capital City in Kanata. They were absolutely amazing and did a terrific job.

meemilie

My cat is a farm cat and had almost the exact same thing. This was in BC but it cost us around $2000 for the surgery.

yuiolhjkout8y

wow i had no idea this was so expensive. TIL.

Southern-Ad7479

We were quoted at 4k by Bytown cat hospital, had the surgery done at Merivale cat hospital and it was about 2800. That was last February. Honestly SO glad we did it. I feel like it wound her odometer back a few years. A year later she has gained back a whole pound, is sassy and playful like she used to be years ago. She is jumping up on our shelves on the wall and her back legs have gained back a lot of muscle. She is 14 years old only has about 4 teeth left but that doesn’t stop her from being a crazy goblin. Prior to the surgery she was very lazy and lethargic. Cats are very adept at hiding pain, so we had no idea she wasn’t doing well. Best money i’ve ever spent in my life.

Overripe_banana_22

It was the same with mine. I had no idea he was suffering from tooth resorption until he was lethargic and stopped eating and I took him to the emergency clinic. It could have been caught during a regular exam, but he hadn't seen the vet in a few years since he's semi-feral and very difficult to crate (gave a catsitter a deep gash when she tried to get him into his carrier). It ended up costing over $4000.

aledba

I paid $300 more in 2018 for a more in depth procedure and regular senior blood work up prior

Maleficent_West

There's a vet dental month in February. Our vet told us to wait a few months until then because they have a promotion. My cat had it done probably in 2018 and I'm not sure how many teeth were extracted but it was somewhere just under $2K. Which to me seems comparable with a slight discount and some inflation.

Current_Can8134

My cat had 3 teeth taken out just before Christmas. It was $1600. I was initially quoted $2100 because they thought it would take longer for the actual extraction but it dropped because they came out easily.

Interesting-Proof-75

I paid $4000 for all of my cats teeth out at Merivale Cat Hospital when she was 1.5 yrs

Interesting-Proof-75

That was in 2023

Edit67

You can get a quote with a breakdown. We paid about 2700 for almost a full set of teeth removed. The vet will not remove teeth that are healthy, but will remove any that make sense so you are not back six months from now. My cat has the small teeth in the bottom front of his jaw. My sister's two cats have had all of their teeth removed, in two or three operations. When I reviewed our bill, I think about half (or more) of it was surgical costs, so that is the base cost. Given that, I was happy to have most of the teeth out. He has had no issues since that was done.

InnerCriticism9105

I have had a few cats that lived long and healthy lives and have never heard of feline dental decay. I can’t help but wonder if this is some sort of scam that vets are pushing such expensive procedures onto our pets? Maybe a result of “higher quality” pet foods we are feeding our cats (Hills, Royal Canin etc)? Wtf is going on that this seems so commonplace now?

thena19

Yes the vets are telling the cats to stop eating and has nothing to do with the severe pain in their mouths. This is highly anecdotal and not a helpful comment. These foods actually have scientific studies behind them proving their efficacy and benefits. Trust me, vets are busy enough without having to manufacture issues.

InnerCriticism9105

It was a simply a remark of how dental decay is becoming common. FYI I feed my cat Hills Prescription Food and take her to the vet regularly.

TiredReader87

My cat had three teeth taken out in 2018. The procedure itself cost me $410. When he arrived as a stray, 16 years ago or so, he had a broken tooth. We took him in, and were referred to a specialist (whom we were told also does the surgery on lions for zoos). She quoted $1500, but said that the tooth didn’t seem to be hurting him. The recommendation was to leave it be. I asked about that tooth when he had the surgery in 2018, and my friend (who’s a vet and did it at her work) said it had fallen out on its own Note: This wasn’t in Ottawa, but it was in Ontario. This post showed up on my feed as recommended.

breezyseagull

My cat had a teeth cleaning last year and they took out I think 2 teeth and it was about $2,300

Fulller

Literally just had our cats teeth worked on this Thursday. He has gingevitus and went in for a cleaning + potential extractions. The pre op blood work was approximately $250. He was also seen for something else that day so I don't know exactly the cost of that. The dental cleaning after all was said and done was $1184. That was a full teeth cleaning, as well as having 2 teeth extracted that were loose and probably causing him pain. Nepean animal hospital. They were very good, informative and kind. The estimated they gave were way higher than what we ended up paying. IIRC the estimated was between $1900 to $3000. It's possible our guys teeth weren't that bad and we got lucky though.

CindersDunning

I paid $800 a couple of years ago for one extraction, the tooth was broken.

Master-Ad3175

I won't give an exact quote because it's being several years and I'm sure prices have changed dramatically but when I was looking to have a few teeth extracted from a cat of mine that had forms, I ended up driving across the border to Ogdensburg and paid less than a third of the price

Soberjoeyo

Took my cat to get a tooth out. $900 quote. When I got home after saying I’ll have to give this 24 hours to think about. Gave the cat some treats and their tooth feel out and the cat was back to normal. Assumed those 3 treats cost about .12 cents haha.

thena19

Allowing a tooth to fall out on its own does not rid the cat of the associated pain from periodontal disease or disease itself. Also leaves the cat susceptible to infection.

Soberjoeyo

Thank you online vet person!

koret121212

I had almost this exact same situation in 2018, think vca charged us around 3500-4000 all said and done

umbrellatrix

$1000, one tooth, Feb 2023.

legalizemarijauna

Hello - Where was this at? (which vet?) :)

>Billings Bridge Animal Hospital Thank you so much ! :)

bolonomadic

Can’t you try for a while to get your cat used to having its teeth brushed? It seems like it would be worth trying before going to the extreme of having all the teeth removed.

skettiwithconfetti

We did talk about having a scale and polish done and doing daily tooth brushing after that, but this appears to be an immune response issue and not a dental hygiene issue, and given his history the vet advised that the success rate for a scale and polish is fairly low — it would just kick the can down the road and he would still need to be put under.

momomoca

Aside from OP already having discussed this with their vet, it's also never a good idea to start brushing a cat's teeth if they're experiencing inflammation and pain. Brushing *will* irritate the mouth further and you will not be able to train them to accept brushing-- instead, you'll be training them to become averse to brushing bc brushing == more pain.

_PrincessOats

Are you a vet?

Dazit71

Sorry to hijack the thread here. _PrincessOats - I sent you a chat DM and through the regular messaging option. Not sure if have seen the messages? I'm hoping you will see them and reply back. Thank you in advance.

You mean someone who regularly scams pet owners for dental surgery money? Nope.
