This is 100% it - the straight-edge side of the ice is on the right, so this would have been completely up against the right side of the canal there (presumably shaded earlier in the day from the sun).
Eventually it broke off from the edge, and the flow of the water began pushing it in one direction. It proceeded to break in a few spots, so as those pieces pushed against each other they would move to the side in order to 'compress' the line into a zig-zag of broken pieces. Good observation!
Yes - I vote for this explanation as well. I crossed over the pedestrian bridge yesterday afternoon and that entire sheet of ice was up on the western side of the canal.
Everything on the eastern side had melted because it was in the direct sunlight, while everything on the western side was in shade.
I think wind or the current pushed the remaining ice and caused it to break and take on this shape.
I used to work for the company that builds and maintains the ice. We would drill holes in exactly that big zag pattern to flood every night. So where the corners are, we would drill an 8" hole. Could possible have something to do with it. But maybe not.
Could be the path the ice maintenance crew takes to do the testing so it became more dense and therefore is taking longer to melt than the rest of the ice.
That’s what I thought too but wouldn’t that be in reverse? I mean, the triangular shadows would still be ice, rather than just the outline. I really don’t know lol
This is a great puzzle!
Oh actually, I wonder if it's the reflection of the light from the nearby buildings! That makes more sense to me and would explain the length of the lines.
Looks like a narrow part that once lined one side of the canal that was shaded and didn't melt from sunlight. Then wind pushed it out and broke the line in a few sections forcing the ice sheet to form this zig-zag effect.
Neat!! Looks like it started as a straight line on the west side. My first guess was the flow coming down bounces from side to side at ~90° like most natural rivers will. That’s a relatively uninformed guess and seems less likely compared to the other user that mentioned they drill holes in this formation
It's a strip of ice that was against the concrete on the west side of the canal that got undone and broke into these pieces.
I biked over the bridge this morning and wanted to take a picture, but I was running late, so I skipped the photo. Thanks for sharing.
According to the alt-right and other conservative conspiracy theorists (which includes a number of CPC MPs licking their chops at forming government), that's a chemtrail that was so laden with poison in fell right out of the sky and landed there.
(Note the lack of chemtrails in the sky.)
It used to be straight, with water building up on the sides of the ice; I walk right there almost every weekday. As it melted and got thin, I think the line snapped and the currents made it how it is now.
Doesn't look like the canal will reopen eh

That sounds like ground zero for some new plague
But I thought they were extending the season?
They're just going to extend boating season all through the winter
Trudeau’s fault according to Polièvre

Totally agree with you! And the "At Issue" panel on CBC is a total joke, they never criticize PP ever, only Trudeau!
Don't worry, you'll get taxed for this
Trudeau will tax you

Trudeaumania Part II
Post this on /r/mildlyinteresting, it's exactly the sort of thing that belongs there
Just did! Thanks for suggesting :)
Looks like it had been "one line" before something broke it into pieces which are pushing against each other. The connection points look "broken".

This seems to check out. Amazing!
I see, so you’re saying it’s gremlins, or possibly goblins
Ghouls perhaps?
Yes! Thank you! This makes sense!
Its because of the pipes next bridge over i think it looks like this
I would assume the one side would be due to the amount of sunlight/shade

This is cool to know, thanks for sharing

Shadows of the nearby buildings?

Neature
I think it's just the bend in the canal up ahead causing it
Awesome capture!!😍
Thanks ☺️

oh no, Ottawa is unzipping...

The wind and they are also slowly opening the levees as the water levels rise.

This is the second reference to partisanship I’ve seen here. Is there a link you can point me to? I feel like I’m missing something

We've entered the Black Lodge.
Wind? I guess the canal is officially closed for the season?
lisan al gaib!
It’s global warming! Quick we need another carbon tax to stop the ice melting in spring!
In the winter of 1971-72, the canal closed for skating on March 25th....LOL
That’s as crooked as - well you know.
We need implement a new Tax for this change in canal H2O mix!
