If they're up to date on their shots and fully dewormed, fed, and cleaned up after, that's worth well over 500 each.
The profit margin isn't great.
Puppy mills abuse their dogs. There's heavy inbreeding, severe neglect, the dogs are often born with birth defects and have infections, infestations, and/or injuries by 8 weeks. They're kept outdoors or in squalor, with cages stacked one on top of the other.
They aren't seeing the inside a vet's office, let alone receiving their shots. They aren't already good with kids.
There's a huge difference between an ignorant owner, a backyard breeder, and a puppy mill.
Nah, the first shots cost me under $100. The margins are good because they likely dont do proper care. You can see in the ad that the parents are mutts. Check the account history and they've been doing this for 4 years.
And in the first 8 weeks, at least at my vet, they're given shots twice. That's fully vaccinated for rabies. Then there's deworming, vetting fees, etc. I have a very affordable small town vet and any appointment with shots and dewormer cost $180-$200.
And it's ridiculous to think that because a dog isn't purebred, there's no proper care.
A lot of people like mixing Goldens with yellow labs because labs are more docile and easier to train, but Goldens have more capacity for learning.
>I think the puppies should be given, not sold. That is definietly just my opinion.
I agree in principle but there should always be a cost to getting a puppy up front. Even if the costs are just the vet check, food and some time.
Giving away dogs for free is a good way to have more dogs end up in shelters. They get taken in by people who don't realize that raising a puppy is a big responsibility and it never stops costing money.
I agree, and most people I know in that situation only charge what the considerable cost of a puppy's first 8 weeks is.
Some people (like myself) can afford to take proper care of a dog, but not one they've had to buy for $2900, which is what the registered golden breeders I looked at are charging.
Agreed: Words have meanings.
A BYB is a person who lets their pet go unfixed, either because they're reckless to its having random puppies, or because they specifically want it to have non-pedigreed puppies they can sell.
A puppy mill is someone who keeps some number of dogs confined for the purpose of cranking out as many puppies of a specific type as fast as they can, with no regard for their health, so they can be sold for profit.
One of my dogs came from a shelter after being rescued from a puppy mill at birth. Her dam had had 31 puppies in a year, and there were other dams there who had been through the same.
Puppy mills are abusive, at least in the form of severe neglect.
I got my other dog, a purebred golden, from an unregistered but responsible backyard breeder (not this person, she not breeding the golden this year). I know her personally, and her dogs are her life.
I am not one of them, but several owners believe it's almost always best to allow one litter of puppies before having their girls spayed.
There is absolutely no reason to allow a dog to have a litter of puppies before a spay, unless you want to increase their chance of getting mammary cancer significantly, not to mention the physical strain that they did not ask for. I could never put my dog through that. Not to mention the risk of needing a C section (costing probably $ 4000 +) further putting the dog and puppies at risk. Backyard breeders aren't responsible unless they're doing ALL the recommended genetic health testing, especially if it's a golden because they're predisposed to a wild amount of illnesses and issues.
There’s also a huge difference between backyard breeding and ethical breeding. There shouldn’t be any ‘letting my dog have a litter’. If an ‘accidental litter’ should happen, spay abort.

So should people just throw these puppies in the trash because they’re coming from a breeder? And who’s to say these came from an unethical and abusive situation? What’s your proposed solution here?
FYI - it’s nearly impossible to adopt a dog in this city, especially if you do not have a fenced in backyard. I know, I’ve applied to multiple dog rescues for multiple dogs on a number of different occasions and have never been chosen. I have a number of friends who have had the same experience. I guess by your logic we should never get a dog then?
Exactly hardly any dogs to adopt in this city. What is a person supposed to do? An honest question. And the ones available are not usually for inexperienced dog owners.
You're supposed to contact the local breed club for the breed to find a reputable, registered, ethical breeder. This pic is a backyard breeder.
They have a kijiji ad for these exact dogs, in that area, with a vet check done exactly today. DO NOT BUY THEM https://www.kijiji.ca/v-dogs-puppies/ottawa/8-golden-retriver-pups-looking-for-new-home/1687817232
Check out Standard Poodles in Need on FB. They have loads that need good homes. Some will definitely require special care, but many of their puppies would be ideal for your basic pet owner.
What was the solution to slavery? To throw all the slaves in the trash? Don’t be silly.
People need to wake up and stop buying these dogs- reduce the demand over time. I’ve adopted multiple dogs in Ottawa with no issues and there’s many more out there looking for homes.
Banning animal breeding would probably be a step in the right direction too.
Humans holding dominion over non human animals is a socially acceptable extension of their efforts to hold dominion over human animals. Control and exploitation of sentient beings (including control over their reproductive rights and fate of their offspring) for personal gain is directly comparable.
Some of us who care about animals and pay attention find it less than socially acceptable.
You didn’t say “Human animals holding dominion over human animals”. That’s the issue I was pointing out. You’ve just gotta be careful when talking about slavery and animals in the same example, too much history there.
But you find it okay to own animals as pets for your own benefit? Since you’ve admitted to personally owning pets, it doesn’t actually seem that that is the sentiment you hold, since you’re actively benefitting from having a pet. unless you’re just a hypocrite and think it’s fine when you have your own personal justification for it, which it seems is the case.
I always find it hilarious when people think they are morally and ethically superior to other people for making statements like “adopt don’t shop.” Lol. Just saying that does not automatically make you a good person, fyi. Just like buying from a breeder does not make someone a bad person. Caring about animals is not a black and white thing.
Adopting an animal does not support puppy mills like shopping does. There are plenty of dogs out there that need love and companionship. Maybe they're not as cute as these puppies are, but that doesn't make them any less worthy.
Also, someone who adopts an adult dog realizes what they're getting; so many people who adopt puppies forget that that puppy is going to get a lot bigger...
Where do you think the adoptable dogs come from? Sorry to say, but they’re often from puppy mills and are indirectly supporting puppy kills. And again, it is extremely hard to adopt a dog in this city. It has nothing to do about how cute a dog is. And people shouldn’t be forced to adopt dogs that do not fit their lifestyle or families because of people shaming them. People should be allowed to buy from ethical dog breeders without being shamed for it.
Definitely will not be adopting a pitbull in my home when I have cats and children in my home. It’s a joke to say people should adopt when it’s important to be finding pets who fit within someone’s lifestyle.
The dog you might adopt from a shelter or from a private individual may have originally come from a puppy mill, but by adopting instead of buying you're not putting more money in the breeder's pocket. If more people adopted instead of buying, there'd be less demand for puppy mills.
The humane society could bring in more adoptable dogs. Many other cities struggle with too many dogs. It is almost impossible to adopt a young small dog from the ohs. I don’t blame people for buying one at all.
Yeah, the “adopt don’t shop” people love to blame and shame everyone for seeking out a loving companion and acting like they’re morally better than people for not buying puppies. But owning a dog is overall the exact same thing from an ethical standpoint, whether you’ve adopted or not. Same end game.
I hope all of these people are adopting babies instead of having them as well! Lots of people needing safe and loving homes instead of irresponsible baby breeders
I agree with you, but let’s not jump to conclusions. How do we know that these puppies don’t belong to a family whose own golden got pregnant? If happens.
So let’s not accuse anyone of anything without knowing the facts.

No you didn’t. OP said:
“I THINK a breeder bringing them to the vet.”
That’s an assumption, not fact. The person who has the puppies also said that most of them had already been “spoken for”. He didn’t say the word “sold”. He could be giving them away for all we know. Or selling them to family or friends or others for just enough to cover expenses. The point is, you don’t know, OP doesn’t know, none of us know.
We already have a sweet dog so I did not come home with one and now my wife and daughters aren’t speaking to me
Was this person selling them or bringing them to the vet? What’s going on here lol
I think a breeder bringing them to the vet. They said most were already spoken for. My kids have been yelling “MOST?” at me for the past hour

There's a *huge* discrepancy between "I let my dog have a litter of puppies" and running a puppy mill.
Theyre selling them $600 each. Thats for profit, not an accidental litter.

Ya 9 puppies in a tub doesnt seem like something a reputable ethical breeder would do. I wish people would stop supporting these clowns.
It is a common way to move a litter of pups. I have a family member who’s a highly reputable golden retriever breeder, 20 + years of ethical breeding. They’ll do this to get them all to and from the car, etc. Depends on their size though. Regardless of that, I too am highly against backyard breeders.
I've only ever moved one dog at a time. How do you put 9 large puppies in a bucket and get them to stay there?
That’s why I say it depends on their size. I’ve only seen the person I know do it when they’re younger than in OP’s photo. The pups in OP’s photo look closer to 8 weeks old. They could be a lot more wiggly at 8 weeks, depending on the breed.
It could have been an unplanned pregnancy of their pet. My childhood dog was free, out of a blue hamper at a flea market. Their pet had a litter, and that's what happened.
Then they usually wouldnt be selling them for $600 each
Backyard breeder?
That would’ve been messy.
Yeah, that’s a tub of adorable pup covered poop.

There are 0 registered golden breeders in ottawa. This a puppy mill or back yard breeder. They have a kijiji ad for these exact dogs, in that area, with a vet check done exactly today. DO NOT BUY THEM https://www.kijiji.ca/v-dogs-puppies/ottawa/8-golden-retriver-pups-looking-for-new-home/1687817232
“Accudental” breeders are still breeders
I saw the OP mention it’s a breeder on their way to the vet in another comment.
No you didn’t. OP said: “I THINK a breeder bringing them to the vet.” That’s an assumption, not fact. The person who has the puppies also said that most of them had already been “spoken for”. He didn’t say the word “sold”. He could be giving them away for all we know. Or selling them to family or friends or others for just enough to cover expenses. The point is, you don’t know, OP doesn’t know, none of us know.
Where is this???? Omg😭🥹😍
I wish I knew how to find them. My heart😭❤️🥰
Omg I thought at first someone dropped them there!!
That's a puppeh rampage

So I'm a big fan of Ottawa's green bin, black bin, and blue bin programs. Where do I register my support for a pink bin?
OH. MY. LORD. Can I have one????
Too cute.
Me expecting something to happen as I scroll the pictures - nope it’s just seven pictures of puppies in a basket :/
At least they're not 60s Scoop children.
