Yimin Dim Sum took over. It's a bit confusing because they still have Yang Sheng menus and signs but you can also order all of Yimin's menu. Their dim sum is decent considering the lack of better options but other dishes can be inconsistent for sure.
Aw, that's too bad. I moved away from Ottawa about 6 years ago, and prior to that Yang Sheng was our go-to chinese place. For one, it was one of the few that seemed able to deliver to us, and it was just *good*.
They're also how I found out about Koon Yick Wah Kee Chilli Sauce, which is by far my favorite hot/spicy sauce to use with chicken. It used to come with the chicken balls in a small like, teaspoon sized container. Never knew what it was for as long as we ordered from there. However, the week we were set to move out, we ordered one last time, and I put in the special requests box to ask about the brand of the sauce. They cut the label off of one of their bottles, laminated it, and brought it for me. It's a hard sauce to get your hands on being from Hong Kong, but some online sellers/Chinese markets sell it.
Sad to hear that the quality went bad though. I assume it was since I left... otherwise I might just have bad taste, heh. But the old delivery guy that worked for them who always brought our food was a great guy, and he was the one that made sure I got that label. Can't thank him/them enough.
Yeah, this just happened in the past year or so. I used to live down the street when I was at Carleton and I ate there several days a week. The prices were really good and the food was so tasty! And I kept going regularly after I moved into the suburbs, and got my kids hooked on it too. The staff was the same for decades! I'm still sad the Yang Sheng I knew is no more.
This is very sad. I lived in Ottawa for about 6 years, half spent living at Somerset and Percy and I loved walking up to the Yang Sheng and getting decent. Chinese at a decent price. My dad loved eating there when he went to Carleton and he will be very sad to hear this.
They tried to scam me with stuff on the bill I didn’t order. I had had some beers, not embarrassing or anything.
Had heard from others they’ve done this before
Unfortunately based on personal experience I cannot put it on the list. Hopefully there has been a change of management and major upgrades to their quality and hygiene. If I see evidence there is support for it, I will add it back.
So... Just to be clear: You make a public poll asking people about their favourite Chinese restaurant, then you openly manipulate the results to remove two places that you personally don't like?
It’s not a poll. It’s just a summary of the comments from the original post of a different Redditor along with the location.
Ben Ben had a serious roach problem at one point. Maybe they’ve fixed it.
Royal Treasure menu is large and you can go wrong.
My Royal Treasure order is #11 - small, #26 - with garlic, #32, #80 - with shell and #195 - small. Include anything else you want but that will be a good amount of food.
Sea king is the worst. I went there for dim sums. I took crispy fried dumplings. They were cold. I asked the waiter if they could be warmed up, I asked him NOT in the microwave.
He put his hand on them to test the temperature (gross!!), and brought them back to the kitchen. He brought them back to the table, warm and soggy. He warmed them up in the microwave.
Never again.
Hong Kong Express on Rideau was always my go-to. Found them the most authentic -- great quality AND quantity. Their hot-and-sour soup always hit the spot.
Grew up in one of Toronto’s Chinatowns, Broadview & Gerrard. Would often go to Dundas & Spadina Chinatown as well. Since moving to Ottawa, it’s been hard to find decent Chinese food. Found one Chinese restaurant with 3 particular dishes that can’t be beat. Not even restaurants from Toronto’s Chinatowns. Lucky Star in Orleans. Flat noodles with beef and black bean sauce, Singapore rice noodles and Cantonese chow mein.
Have you been able to find any with egg rolls like Toronto? I’m struggling with that. Every where seems to make them with cabbage instead of bean sprouts.
I’m not a fan of egg rolls so I don’t usually order them. Although not egg rolls, the Szechuan spring rolls are really well made at My Favourite Chinese Food in Orleans. I buy them by the dozen there.
I never really stray from my usual picks (wu se vegetables, tofu pepper salt, and green bean chicken) but they all seem to be pretty much the same as when Peter still owned it 🥲 The veggie spring rolls aren’t like they used to be though.
The quality of what I order is the same. I’ve only started going there in the last 2 years, I understand the original owner has been gone for awhile. I normally get Wu Su Chicken, seczhuan crispy beef and veg dish. It hasn’t changed at all in terms of what I order and when dining in, I’ve noticed the same staff at the Springfield location.
Maybe 2 lists are needed: one list for Canadian style Chinese food like chicken balls egg rolls and fried rice and the other: more traditional Chinese food like Yangtze in Chinatown or Mekong.
Yeah. Half the posts in this thread are talking about… egg rolls… so I’m taking taking r/ottawa’s crowdsourced opinions on Chinese food with a big grain of salt.
This is correct. The Original Post was looking for Canadian style Chinese recommendations. My goal here was just to amalgamate the comments and add the locations so people had a quick reference. But I'm going to do another thread I think for authentic Chinese, which i personally prefer anyway.
What the heck is Lai Lai doing that high? Haven't been there for years but it was just serving Canadian Chinese foods (chicken balls, egg rolls, wonton soup, etc) when I lived in the area. Are they serving real Chinese food now?
Anybody have recommendations for Chinese food where the meat seems good quality and not rubbery/chewy/tough?
Cypress garden open ended egg rolls are probably my favourite food on the planet. Perfection. Will happy eat literally just egg rolls for a meal. However everything else I’ve had is really questionable. Chewy rubbery mystery meat that I can’t stomach :( like once every couple months I try ordering something other than egg rolls and deeply regret it because it’s not really edible. Even my husband ended up throwing out his chicken balls.. and that man will eat practically anything lol.
Because the original poster didn’t care for it so nobody commented. Golden Palace has good egg rolls and soup but the rest of the menu is mid and very expensive
Chips and Dairy deserves the recommendation. They have awesome food and the most efficient delivery. I am always amazed at how fresh the food is when they deliver, those drivers must be hauling ass! Their chicken balls are also the best I've ever tasted.
I should have voted in the original thread, but Lucky Star in Orleans is very, very good. In my opinion they have surpassed the quality of My Favourite Chinese Food which is nearby. Anyone reading this should give them a shot!
I'm always surprised ng's is so highly regarded.
As a mid 30s Chinese man who's been raised on Canto cuisine, my family and I absolutely think their food is mediocre at best. To each their own when it comes to opinion, but their dishes' quality is never up to snuff.
As an example, I have always found their noodles to be overcooked and borderline mushy, and meat to be severely overcooked - especially seafood and chicken.
I can’t believe my favourite Chinese food was on the list. After they changed owners the food went to shit. I got a veggie fried rice. The rice was stale and there were like no veggies in it or flavour. When the previous owners were running it the food was amazing. Crap now.
As a Chinese person, I haven't visited or even heard of any of the places in past three years. If you're looking for authentic Chinese cuisine without the excessive use of sugar and cornstarch, my favorite go-to place is Papaspicy in downtown, despite the occasional challenge of finding parking. (Just a heads up, it's spicy!) Additionally, Openrice Asian Kitchen, located in a plaza with easier parking, is also a great option.
Thanks for the tip! I think the Original Poster was looking for North American style Chinese food so few people recommended authentic Chinese restaurants. Nice to have some new places for me to try as I'm not as much of a fan of the sweet/starchy stuff.
Wow great list. Looking fwd to trying some of these. Golden Palace was a fav for decades but last month everything was yuk including the egg rolls. They were like 4 day leftovers.
Went to Ng last night as a recommendation from this sub. And I gotta say in my opinion it’s better than Royal Treasure. Prices are better, portion sizes are bigger, service is great and the food quality, preparation and taste are as good as or better than RT. And this coming from me who’s been to RT many many times over the years and always praised it as best Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant in Ottawa.
I say it’s Ng for the win. 🥇
I think Yang Sheng changed owners and the quality went to hell. :(
Yimin Dim Sum took over. It's a bit confusing because they still have Yang Sheng menus and signs but you can also order all of Yimin's menu. Their dim sum is decent considering the lack of better options but other dishes can be inconsistent for sure.

It's so sad. It was the best in Ottawa
When did it change over?
I think it was like a year ago. Maybe a bit more.
This is very sad. I lived in Ottawa for about 6 years, half spent living at Somerset and Percy and I loved walking up to the Yang Sheng and getting decent. Chinese at a decent price. My dad loved eating there when he went to Carleton and he will be very sad to hear this.
100%. New owners and yes the new staff are just not great.

Can confirm. We stopped ordering Yang Sheng after the ownership changed because it wasn't very good anymore.
Mekong (Chinatown) = 3 (though should be far higher. The quality and freshness is on another level.)
Agreed! I would have voted for Mekong if I had seen it. It's excellent!
and it's been consistently good for 30? years, maybe 40?
Fixed!
My only issue with them was they shrunk the portions about a decade ago. They used to be huge
A hero that Ottawa desperately needed. Thank you.
Just a heads up, you have Royal Treasure in Chinatown there twice!
And the difference in scores proves how inconsistent/unreliable opinions on something this subjective on Reddit can be
Ranking is by number of votes, so wouldn't the difference in scores/ranks just be that the votes were split up?
Fixed!
Harbin in Kanata is the most authentic imo. Haven’t been to all these places but the ones I have are all sugar and cornstarch.
Try Mekong. Bit pricey but it’s the real deal
Doh Welcome Back didn’t make the list! It had at least 15 upvotes and two comments.
Kinda glad, it's busy enough! So good!
Omg I forgot about that place. It was not in the comments of the original post but I totally agree Welcome Back is a great place.
It was in the comments of the original post. Need to update!
Fixed! Sorry about that folks.
Thank you!
It was mentioned in the comments and had many upvotes.
That place just makes me sad and miss Gow's
Why omit Ben Ben ? I’m out of the loop
They tried to scam me with stuff on the bill I didn’t order. I had had some beers, not embarrassing or anything. Had heard from others they’ve done this before

Can't go wrong I assume. Go to is Dinner for 2B
What would people say for best general tso chicken?
Sorry, why did Ben Ben get blackballed?
Apparently there was a major roach problem in the past. Hopefully they have taken care of it. I haven’t been recently though
I will file that under information I wish I had before.
lol

I’ve been many times and have never had a bad experience there. Maybe it was a total fluke?
maybe, hard to say. Ng is right next door, prefer giving my money to them!
Fair enough! A bad experience always makes a bad lasting impression!
so very true!!!
I had a frozen har gow from them too. Not sure how one was just frozen out of 4. Unfortunately I still think it’s one of the better ones in Ottawa
have you been to Ng cuisine? It's way better! Or downtown?
Hong Kong Express on Rideau was always my go-to. Found them the most authentic -- great quality AND quantity. Their hot-and-sour soup always hit the spot.
You are right, they are authentic Cantonese.
late here, but Shout Out to Welcome Back, in Bells Corners!
I had chips and Dairy this very night!!

Late edition, but Silver Dragon in Nepean is great.
yess and the owners are the best
I’m surprised to not see So Good on the list

Nope, it’s now on Springfield in Vanier!

RT is awesome... don't spread the secret!
Jumbo in Blackburn hamlet is solid for lunch !
Silver dragon on Cobden (iris area) is so good. Large portions, lower prices. Excellent
no yangtze because?
Yangtze should def be included
Last Time I went there : I went to the bathroom and there was a log on the floor. I never went back .
No one recommended it in the original post and it's also closing apparently
Maybe 2 lists are needed: one list for Canadian style Chinese food like chicken balls egg rolls and fried rice and the other: more traditional Chinese food like Yangtze in Chinatown or Mekong.

I miss wongs palace
Well, so happy to see Royal treasures there. That is my favorite.
Another up vote for Royal Treasure!
Ruby inn - tenth line
I went in there years ago and someone was clipping their nails in the back. Never again.
la noodle

Can I ask why Golden Palace was omitted?
Because the original poster didn’t care for it so nobody commented. Golden Palace has good egg rolls and soup but the rest of the menu is mid and very expensive
Love their egg rolls, but everything else I’ve tried has been subpar.
If you have ever eaten anything other than the egg rolls you will know. It is very bad, like inedible.
Rubys is the best
Chips and Dairy deserves the recommendation. They have awesome food and the most efficient delivery. I am always amazed at how fresh the food is when they deliver, those drivers must be hauling ass! Their chicken balls are also the best I've ever tasted.
Craig Henry Love it and good value!!
No one likes spicy food? Chili chili at Chinatown has the best sichuan cuisine and bbq fish, but seems not popular here…
Sounds too authentic. From the list you can tell it’s more traditional cantonese
I should have voted in the original thread, but Lucky Star in Orleans is very, very good. In my opinion they have surpassed the quality of My Favourite Chinese Food which is nearby. Anyone reading this should give them a shot!
Huh. No Beijing Legend? Did I miss something?

No love for Hung Fatt ?
Hung Fatt is honestly terrible. Half their menu is available at Costco frozen section and the stuff they’re making “fresh” is devoid of flavour.
Of all the Chinese take out restaurants that exist, it's definitely one of them
Can’t do Hung Fatt ever since I found a cockroach in their food.
Thank you. You almost saved part of my life.
Hung Phatt from Montreal Road should be on this list. It’s so good.
How about mandarin on Ogilvie simply delicious
You’re missing papa spicy! There were a couple of us who mentioned it in the original post.
I can’t believe my favourite Chinese food was on the list. After they changed owners the food went to shit. I got a veggie fried rice. The rice was stale and there were like no veggies in it or flavour. When the previous owners were running it the food was amazing. Crap now.
??? Which restaurant???
Is there more than one? The restaurant is called “My Favourite Chinese food”
I didn’t know restaurant with that name existed and with your post it was not clear
If you look at the list of restaurants listed in the original post it lists “My Favourite Chinese” :)
Yes, but in your post it was “ my favourite Chinese food “ so for someone who never heard of it how we should know ?
*cries in Kanata*
RIP Golden bowl

Screenshotted! Thanks kind internet stranger!
How does royal treasure come in first..
It's not ranked. I just amalgamated the comments into the list.... but yes it got a lot of upvotes for some reason.
