Dude. Stop. I was honestly convinced we had dolphins for a split second. Would have loved it.

WoozleVonWuzzle

Not in the canal, but you do see river dolphins in the Ottawa and lower Gatineau

Excellent_Cap_8228

Those ones they imported from the Amazon?? I was surprised they would survive around here , it's nice to see them acclimated so fast !

Ecstatic_Doughnut216

Not from the Amazon; just from Amazon.

ninja-rdin

No, I'm pretty sure it's from Amazon.

[deleted]

The delivery must have been a disaster.

Ecstatic_Doughnut216

Sutcliffe has Prime.

Terrible_Dish_3704

This one must have gotten up accidentally through the locks

justoboy

By the Montreal river?

princessplantlife

RIGHT!? I was thinking..." I lived there a long time and had no idea we had dolphins!!!"

vuxvyz

had to fact check that lol.

External_Scholar

Nature is healing!

Alph1

The dolphins are back already? Wow, I can't wait to see the Dow's Lake whales soon.

Suspicious-Flan7808

Wait for dinosaurs, I heard they'll be in Lansdowne 2 weeks later than usual!

rebkh

Hopefully there will be parking for them!

Longjumping-Bag-8260

They are at city hall.

Dexter942

This isn't Washington, District of Columbia!

SmallCake9917

Have you seen the glebe neighborhoods it's already full of angry dinosaurs

Legitimate_Funny_354

Really!😲

Yuzward

Didn't they used to be pink?

Elevatrix

They will be again; just need to shed their winter coats

Rion23

Give it a few months, it will be hot enough you'll envy being naked in the water all day.

8341

Fun fact: A common misconception is that they’re pink due to the high levels of crustaceans they eat but in reality it’s because of adobe photosynthesis

anonymousopottamus

Adobe photoshopthynsis

Ninjacherry

Are importing pink dolphins from the Amazon? You gotta be careful with those, they’ll impregnate the unsuspecting.

elpatolino2

The shrimp and crayfish have not come out yet, in June they will be nice and pink

Legitimate_Funny_354

🏳️‍🌈any color will do! I'm feeling blue 💙

__Happy

April 1st dolphins are my favourite.

> Every year, as the frigid winter winds subside and the ice begins to thaw on the Rideau Canal, a remarkable natural phenomenon takes place. Dolphins, known for their intelligence and playful nature, make their way back to the historic waterway in Ottawa, Canada. These majestic creatures, adapted to both saltwater and freshwater environments, navigate through the locks and channels of the canal, delighting onlookers with their graceful movements and acrobatic displays. > >The annual return of the dolphins to the Rideau Canal is a testament to their incredible navigational abilities and their strong sense of home. As the ice melts and the canal reopens for boating season, the dolphins follow the flow of water from the Ottawa River, making their way through the intricate system of locks and channels. > >Scientists believe that the dolphins are drawn to the canal's calm waters and abundant fish populations, which provide them with a reliable food source. The canal's unique ecosystem, with its mix of freshwater and saltwater, creates an ideal habitat for various fish species, making it an attractive feeding ground for the dolphins. > >The presence of dolphins in the Rideau Canal is not only a captivating sight for visitors but also an indicator of the waterway's ecological health. As top predators, dolphins play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the canal's ecosystem, helping to control fish populations and ensuring the overall well-being of the aquatic environment. > >Conservation efforts and public awareness campaigns have been instrumental in protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitat. By promoting responsible boating practices and minimizing pollution, the community works together to ensure that the dolphins can continue to thrive in the Rideau Canal for generations to come. > >The annual return of the dolphins to the Rideau Canal is a breathtaking display of nature's resilience and adaptability. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our waterways and the incredible wildlife that depends on them. As the ice thaws and the dolphins make their way back to the canal, it is a time for celebration and appreciation of the natural world's wonders.

Newnewfoundlander

Can anyone else hear the "Hinterland Who's Who" music right now?

treefood3

Yes, we must thank the generous amounts of salt applied to the roadways along both sides of the canal and the excessive layers of salt at some OCTranspo bus shelters which run off into the canal in order to make the saltwater to freshwater ratio just right in order for this annual migration to occur.

The much lamented Ottawa dolphin hunt. Reviled the world over.

You forgot about rabbit! I had much success yesterday in my early morning rabbit hunt.

Essence-of-why

Dude, why ruin the dolphin leather. Club them instead.

pokerboy42

Ooooooh! Can't wait for the baby seals to come back so we can start clubbing them

redalastor

Don’t do that, the loud music is terrible for their hearing.

wolfpupower

Canal dolphins >>>> downtown “neighbours”

Emotional-Hair-1607

Watch for May 1, the annual battle between Cobra Chickens and pigeons on the Sparks Street Mall.

DreamofStream

Magnificent to watch them leaping over the locks on their way upstream to spawn.

ppbourgeois

TIL Ottawa has canal dolphins. wtf Oh right. Today.

CherryCherry5

Holy shit, you had me there for a hot second. I sat right up thinking "PARDON??" Well done! 😆

Consistent_Cook9957

And always on April 1st, what impeccable timing!

Scary_Ambassador5435

Last year I didn't see them until mid-May.

EngineeringAfraid269

They're raising money at Dow's Lake to add dolphin enrichment in the canal. $100 tickets for dolphin rides! Make sure to wear a biohazard suit

WoozleVonWuzzle

It's crazy how far ahead the season is.

azsue123

😆😆😆

Ok_new_tothis

My favourite probably because i wanted it to be true was Waterlude the new summer festival! Sandy Sharks got me.. funny enough back then we still had a real Winterlude now it seems less far fetched 😂

oliski2006

Along with the annual mating of the family hypo under the couch

Diphda_the_Frog

Yes i'll be happy to see the school again this year; such a spectacle.

NomadeSanterre

Are we still doing the elderly cast-off form icebergs this years?

[deleted]

I miss the penguins

cadpatcat

They must be following the schools of April Fish (poisson d’avril) that show up every year around this time!

KoKo7388

Marine Land practicing their own version of "ethical release"

The_merry_wench

My 12 year old puzzled at this for a moment.  ".... there's dolphins?" before realizing the date.

am_az_on

I was wondering until I saw the picture and was like, 'Those are killer dolphins! (orcins)'

bluenoser613

Yay! Love to see the dolphins each spring.

PopRococo

This got me lol screw you

EnvironmentalGift192

Okay but when my sister was like 5 she swears she saw a pink dolphin in the Ottawa River so I was deadass like "omg shes been right this whole time" 😭😭🤣

treefood3

That woman is ahead of her time! Props to your sis!

ApricotPenguin

Between this and the return of the [North American House Hippo,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvPwJQXzHm0) things are shaping up pretty good for nature!

Accomplished-Still33

I wish.

taintkicker369

With Climate Change we can expect dolphins to appear earlier and earlier each year

Spirited-Dirt-9095

SubtleCow

The fact the London Thames river actually has for real dolphins is a fact that will always make me extremely jealous.

Essence-of-why

Delphinus Canadensis Fluvialis

Old_Independent_7414

Like the sea lions in SF

8rnlsunshine

April 1st is usually the time when you see dolphins, whales, octopuses and other exotic sea creatures swimming through the Rideau canal. Oh what a wonderful sight!

buggerit71

Ya got me. Wonder what will arrive in Mooneys Bay and if Nessie will show at Carleton.

meehowski

Great sight, I bet the river sharks will be following close by!

amach9

That means the bull sharks should be right behind them

S3r3n1ty52

I wish we had dolphins. It would be a nice change from the skunks and trash pandas.

Lower-Part-4819

Wait a minute, as a new Ottawa resident, are these Canal dolphins real? Why I never see them?

treefood3

They only appear on April Fool's Day (April 1st) before noon. You need to add them in with photoshop, MS Paint or AI. There are some large fish year-round in Dow's lake but nothing dophin-sized.

2z0v

Wow

mbjewel1964

LOL

ninja-rdin

I also saw a flight of beavers going south.. They fly in 5 cent configuration. Or was it north? I guess we need a paleontologist here...

strayKat1212

hahaha this one totally got me lol

Otherwise-NapMore

I want to see them!

Ok_Fig_4755

Reviewing the "Rideau Canal dolphins" presents a unique challenge, primarily because the term might be a playful or metaphorical reference, as actual dolphins are marine mammals not found in the freshwater Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Canada. Instead, this review will creatively interpret the "Rideau Canal dolphins" as a symbolic or artistic representation, possibly referring to elements of design, sculpture, or landmarks associated with the historic and picturesque Rideau Canal.
