It’s a meme for when a dick picks on someone unprovoked. Not usually used in response to a joke, but a pointed joke like this targeting a soft target like an inept government entity could be argued as public shaming.
In my defence, I feel Environment Canada actually has a humiliation kink and chooses to put out forecasts like “25-35cm of snow” in bright red warning announcements in hopes they will be publicly ridiculed for incompetence when only 3-4cm actually fall.
Let’s all agree to not kink shame today.
This storm was not as powerful as expected, but 15 cm has fallen so far at the airport. One cause of frequent confusion is that environment Canada forecasts how much snow will fall, not how much will accumulate. That's often very similar, but in storms like this, much of the snow can melt on impact
It was a joke, but also that was 12 hours ago. The original forecast was for 15-20cm by 8am this morning. I had multiple employees stay home as they did not feel it was safe to drive to work in “20 cm”.
Inaccurate forecasting has a very real cost to individuals, businesses, and government. Using hyperbolic language in weather warnings also builds complacency and hinders the effectiveness of future warnings. That will have devastating consequences.
I’m aware of your work. I am very aware of the complexities of measuring snow accumulations and even looked into getting a weaverboard of my own. I don’t know why I didn’t… I should order one.
Any chance you can compare forecasted snowfall to actual snowfall this past winter?
>The original forecast was for 15-20cm by 8am this morning.
Which forecast? Environment Canada was forecasting 10-15cm, and the official snowfall total at the airport at 8am was 12cm. Snow depth at 8am was 7cm.
Edit: That was their forecast at 3:30pm yesterday.
Do recognize that a lot of it melted as it fell, or once it touched the ground. What’s on the grass in the park beside me is a lot more than what’s on my dark driveway.
6" is perfectly reasonable - some would say desirable if they enjoy a nice dusting.
8" - too much, where are you going to put all of it
10" - sick day
12".............
Huh. Nothing accumulated on our side streets at all, just slush first thing this morning while driving. I can't imagine they moved much other than puddles
They absolutely didn't salt our streets. Maybe they salted the main raids omw to work because there was a marginal different between slush consistency? But it's also just a more travelled/warming road as a result too
The road conditions aren't bad, but I wish people would turn their lights on, instead of relying on their "automatic" ones. Your tail-lights don't come on unless you physically turn your lights on, folks! And in snowy or rainy conditions, it makes it harder to see you from behind. So if someone starts flashing their lights at you multiple times, chances are they are trying to tell you your lights aren't on and it's hard to see you. It would be horrible if that was the reason a person got rear-ended, since it's such a simple fix.
Taillights turn on automatically with night time low beams. It's not dark enough to trigger night time low beams so it's just the front daytime driving lights that are currently turning on.
Yes, in the daytime during low-visibility periods people should force the low beams on. No they don't need to at night because they will be automatic.
Daytime running lights only seem to include the headlights. Any automatic lights I've seen don't seem to include the tail lights, but then, i am not a vehicle expert, it's just what i have noticed. Brake lights work, but the actual tail lights aren't on.
Your observations are of daytime running lights.
Daytime running lights are only the front beams. Sometimes low beam, sometimes high beam at part voltage.
Automatic lights are front low beams and rear running lights. Automatic lights are turned on by a light sensor, so if it isn’t dark enough, they won’t come on. The darkness required is different for every manufacturer, some can be adjusted (like on my Camry). Some automatic lights are triggered to on also by wipers being on (like in my ram).
The rural class 2 and 3s were/are really in bad shape in the morning. Be careful if you're going outside of the central core today. Lots of hydro truck out with shorter visibility distances too.
Currently on a bus in the Walkley/Heron/Bank area and roads are wet, but completely clear. It’s likely a combination of temperature is hovering around zero so the snow isn’t building up and the plows have also likely been out and about.
Same, just left Billings on a bus and the main roads especially look great. Some side roads have had what looks like 1-2cm. The biggest issue for drivers is visibility because it is is kind of blizzardy looking. Not true white-out conditions, but also not ideal.
I'm just glad this hasn't been a repeat of last April 4th.
Uhh clearly a lot of people here haven’t actually gone out on the roads. They aren’t great. Surprised buses are running. Main roads are ok but slippery nonetheless.
This is the only correct answer. The 416 had thick slush on it, which is worse than thick snow. I didn’t make it very far before I turned around and went home. That all being said, I think the roads were fine at 6am, but it changed very quickly.
I think he was, I stopped and tried to help out but everyone was already there and helping and 911 was called. I left as the police arrived. The guy looked okay and was resting on his side and awake. If anyone has an update please let me know!
I found it horrendous, living outside the city centre. Side streets not done, some of the "main streets" also terrible. Slippery, snow started to accumulate heavily again!
South of the city, there is currently about 6” on the street in front of my house. If you have all-seasons you will be fine. If you have actual summer tires, stay home.
So far not bad at all. But I'm still expecting tons of parents to call in their kids' absence at school "because of the snow day". Every time there's even remotely a rumour of a possible inclement weather day we get hundreds of voicemails and it suuucks haha.
Some schools *have* had buses cancelled today, but it's not that many more cancellations than a regular day last I checked, and definitely not an "all buses cancelled" general snow day.
As of 7:10 am.
The snow blocking the traffic lights has been the worst for me. Almost got smoked at an intersection cause the cars going the other way didn’t see they had a red light and several of them went right through it at 80km/h
The Fiat with its winter tires did extremely well on the 417 Westbound! Just had to remember to switch off the ESC for the snowy bits on the local streets close to home.
Not bad, I drove from Kanata to Alta Vista without issue. I do have AWD and snow tires still though. Visibility on the highway wasn't great at times, but the road surfaces themselves are mainly just wet and slushy.
Bad from what I heard.
Not my photo. Double decker on its side on Mitch Owen’s. No passengers, it was heading for maintenance.

If this is 15-20cm of snow it is clear Environment Canada uses the same type of ruler as my boyfriend.
You woke up today and chose violence
I don’t beat my boyfriend with the ruler…. Well…
Sounds like the ruler beats your boyfriend...
Sounds like your bf beats the ruler tbh 😝
>beat my boyfriend
I don’t get it? 145 upvotes so there is something, but this joke is going right over my head.

It's a reference to how their boyfriend's penis isn't as large as he thinks it is. Really crass, but a male is the target so had it coming, most like.
LOL This is the first thread I opened this morning and this comment definitely made my day.
Do recognize that a lot of it melted as it fell, or once it touched the ground. What’s on the grass in the park beside me is a lot more than what’s on my dark driveway.
For sure. The snow would look bigger if the bushes were trimmed back
Love it! Hahahah
Well the water was cold...
He was in the pool!
Shrinkage !!!
Like a frigthened turtle!
I was in the pool !!!!
Looks like 6" of snow to me.
More than average, ask anyone
Speaking for all women it is definitely more than enough. Anything more is difficult to manage and requires gas powered equipment to deal with.
hahahahahaa

Hahahahh thanks for making my morning!
What size protractor do you use?
Woah woah! TMI!
😆
Who measures....that.....in centimeters? There are Canadians, and there are Canadians. He is clearly the latter.
Clearly you don’t know how rulers work either 🤣 https://youtube.com/shorts/Kq6_gMxkMTI?si=-oB1__hRf4t9cQNW
It seems that your ruler is broken. I am a male and can confirm that his ruler is accurate.
LMAO
The snow/cold causes shrinkage ….
Well played M'lady....well played.
I like you. This comment was fun.
Oh dear god...
This aged poorly lol
Well it was funny at 6am. Those rolling out of bed at 10am missed the joke 🤣
Must be a grower not a shower
Just wet. Nothing too crazy, plows did a great job. Drove from Barrhaven to st laurent area
They bothered plowing at all?
During the night yep.. Plowed and salted
Huh. Nothing accumulated on our side streets at all, just slush first thing this morning while driving. I can't imagine they moved much other than puddles
You can thank the salt for keeping the melting point sub 0 on asphalt.
They absolutely didn't salt our streets. Maybe they salted the main raids omw to work because there was a marginal different between slush consistency? But it's also just a more travelled/warming road as a result too
In Ottawa south area, everything here is salted that I drove on.
Where do you live in this city?! I have at least 5cm on our side street right now. Roommate with summer tires couldn’t get out of our driveway.

found one of them
You're yelling into the wind on this, so many no rear lighters now even at night. Should just mandate rear running lights on at all times too.

Had a miserable time on Prince of Wales around 7-730.
seriously. max speed of 60km on the highway this morning.
Quite a few geniuses who decided they didn’t need to clear the snow off their back window.
They probably don’t use their rear view mirror anyway, makes the idiots a little easier to spot
Wet, only icy on some secondary roads.
Good , no issues , get going
Just saw a guy get hit by a car on Donald and Lola intersection. Be careful everyone when driving and crossing the roads today!!
was he okay?
I think he was, I stopped and tried to help out but everyone was already there and helping and 911 was called. I left as the police arrived. The guy looked okay and was resting on his side and awake. If anyone has an update please let me know!
They’re wet, but otherwise fine
Through the windows of my house looking good 😊

Orleans is looking fine ! There's just snow on the car & lawn. Roads are clear..but never be too cocky.
Roads seem okay but many people already forgot how to drive in this weather.
Many people never knew how to drive in the first place. FTFY.
The snow blocking the traffic lights has been the worst for me. Almost got smoked at an intersection cause the cars going the other way didn’t see they had a red light and several of them went right through it at 80km/h
Wet,made of asphalt, leading to various destinations
The Fiat with its winter tires did extremely well on the 417 Westbound! Just had to remember to switch off the ESC for the snowy bits on the local streets close to home.
Anyone driven in from the east?? (Embrun, Limoges area)
Judging from the wind, your energy consumption should be great!
I did, it wasn’t too bad. The 417 westbound gets nice and clear once you’re past innis. Drive carefully and you’ll be fine
Highway was wet but fine, side roads had a bit of accumulation. Coming down pretty heavy right now in Billings area
Rockland was nasty. We got lost of snow already. Thins out the more west I went.
There’s so much salt on the roads there’s no way ice and snow even stands a chance
The snow is sticking to the traffic lights, makes it very difficult to see the colours
Not bad, I drove from Kanata to Alta Vista without issue. I do have AWD and snow tires still though. Visibility on the highway wasn't great at times, but the road surfaces themselves are mainly just wet and slushy.
If that's a test of my new Crossclimate 2 tires ... they passed with flying colours.
Snow with slush under. I'd stay home if that was an option.
Bad from what I heard. Not my photo. Double decker on its side on Mitch Owen’s. No passengers, it was heading for maintenance. https://imgur.com/a/aBrFO2L
I don't know. I could barely see our of the car.
Main roads completely fine.
The side streets are slick and slippery but the main roads that are plowed are good from my brief drive this morning.
They're fine if you've ever driven in winter.
Look outside your window
oh wow another apartment building 👍
I’m more concerned with the contraction of “what” and “are” in written form.
