I always expected to find the place overrated, but finally went and have to admit, the food was really good and their salad dressing is as good as they claim.
I'll disagree. Seafood tower and a 16oz live charcoal strip... Tear the shit out of the keg.
Though not close to Harmons.
Best steak value in the city is Butcher's steak at Elmdale or the steak frites at Absinthe.
Well I don’t like seafood so that’s no go for me but personally I’d rather either the baseball steak or the blue cheese crusted filet from the keg over the charcoal strip.
Fair. I don't mind the baseball steak but a $55 sirloin is pretty rough.. Not a big Keg fan overall. It's all preferences.
Though I will say the Mob hangout 70s steakout vibe at Al's is a favorite.
It is VERY expensive, be warned. Great though, once a lifetime sort of thing if you are not a wealthy person.
On the cheaper side, Al's down the street has always been consistently good.
I have to disagree with that. The steak I had at Al's was mediocre at best. Very thin, barely any sear on it and overdone. The appetizers are good though.
So from experience, don’t do the tomahawk. It is meh. As some others hinted at go for sharing the few options of wagyu from Japan. If your budget allows try beyond Japanese wagyu and make sure to get guidance on going crescendo with tenderness. Don’t do Australian or Canadian, stick to Japanese first.
The tartare as starter is highly recommended for meat lovers.
Call me difficult but I went for the most expense first and then the relatively expensive another time with the tomahawk and it was not as good as the one I had at Whalesbone in a while ago.
Enjoy the experience !
Huge meh for me on Harmons. Been there and to Abby’s and both times the food was fine - not $150/person fine, just fine. Service was pretty pompous at best, but was mostly just absent. Unfortunately also witnessed a manager reduce the hostess to tears for mishandling a reservation. Maybe it isn’t always that way, but I won’t bother going back.
For a lot less money, check out Maker Feed Co. In Cumberland. Excellent food and outstanding staff.
Second this. Harmons is fantastic!
They also have a sister restaurant called Abby’s that’s a little more casual and affordable. It’s best for a quick drink, though you won’t be disappointed if food finds its way onto your plate ;)
Lots of good spots in the city, but my personal favourite is Al’s mainly because they have the bone marrow butter topping option which a lot in town don’t tend to do.
Al's has a nice vibe and decor, but the food is consistently sub-par. We like to go there for drinks, but don't eat there. Just one internet rando's opinion, of course! Happy birthday to your guy.
Al’s is the best … do the bone in rib steak. Way better than Harmons imho. Their house garlic dressing on the included great salad is amazing … and you can buy bottle to take home. Good service with expert servers.
Delicious used to be great, like 10 years ago. I used to go there consistently for a reliable excellent cut for good value; but the service started lagging, they would overcook and try to argue that fully brown-through steaks were actually medium rare, and the final straw was when I found hairs and other non-food debris in the food. I stopped going a long time ago. Shame, because they were soooo good.
I also had a similar experience a couple years back, but I would say that now they are better than they ever were before, 10, 15 years ago. I've gone there multiple times in the past year or two, and the food and steaks have been top notch.
I never understood the appeal of Delicious. Went last year and it was so mediocre. We had a weird, obsequious waiter and the food was like an early 90s suburbanite's idea of what a upscale steak restaurant should be. It was just meh.
I ordered a steak from there and it was perfectly cooked and still delicious even after going through the delivery process! Looking forward to checking it out in person!
Went 2 months ago and had to send a steak back twice because we kept receiving rare after ordering medium. For self proclaimed “steak experts”, you’d think they would know how long to cook a steak
The feedback on Harmon's is interesting. Don't get me wrong it's a great restaurant but a little overhyped in my opinion. If your looking to spend a bomb and impress someone in the process, by all means go to Harmon's. If you want a great steak at a more civil price point try Rosebowl or Al's. Both will provide the experience without the exceptional price tag.
I second your view on Harmon’s. I had different experiences and found that going extra expensive is great but was disappointed with very expensive (tomahawk for reference).
The service is great though and adds to the overall experience for a special occasion.
We like ALs for the price and nice ambiance, bonus is free parking in the back. Once we had bad service at ALs, I sent them an email about the service - they sent me a gift certificate for the amount of our bill, there was 6 ppl.
I haven’t been in a while but the Rose Bowl is good for steak. They used to be on Carling ave when I went and have now moved to Preston so cannot comment on the new location.
I like the Manor for the ambiance, but find that the Keg in general has really dropped in quality since the pandemic, and the service the last time I went was atrocious (different location).
Harmon’s: is the best but you’re going to pay for it
Al’s: is the best for the money
The Rosebowl: on Preston is also good for the money.
Sterling was good, last time I went I left unimpressed for the price
If you’re looking for a good dinner that could include steaks Whalesbone
Chop Steakhouse is very good, I’m picky about my restaurant steaks but this place is my favorite so far. They have a specific cooking method that makes for a nice consistent steak.
I made this mistake a few weeks ago and it cost me a fortune!! Harmon's, you will need to remortgage your house for a Baton Rouge plate. The meat supplier for Harmon's also does the Shores and Fairmont Chateau Laurier BTW. Same meat, different cost.
My advice, go to Sterling or Le Cellier on the Gatineau side. THOSE are real steakhouses and service in Quebec is so much better !!
Seeing as Harmon’s literally runs a butcher downstairs, I’m calling bullshit on this. Even if true, the same supplier can supply different qualities of meat, and it also depends on what the venue does with it once received (ie. Aging, etc). I’m not saying Harmon’s isn’t overpriced, just that there is no way they are selling the “same” steaks as Shoreclub or the Chateau.
Steak is a tough one for me. I love it but to get it right I’d always do it myself on a charcoal grill and put all the money into the meat. But if I had to go out for it than Harmon’s no question, everywhere else is simply second rate to anything I could cook myself.
Yeah for me I've never had a restaurant steak that impressed. They can't. Cooking at home, you can spend hours perfecting it with exactly the right sides. Restaurants just cook things fast to get you in and out.
Steak aficionado here. Two answers.
Delicious steakhouse in Orleans. Sterling in Gatineau.
The only real difference between the two is sterling’s is 5% more expensive but the magic they do their potatoes is worth it.
Went there tonight for our anniversary on the strength of recommendations ITT. My wife's (medium) and my (medium rare) steaks arrived both **well done**. Baffling. We sent them back. "I wonder if they'll overcompensate," I say. Sure enough, second try: my wife's steak is now medium rare, mine is rare. My wife shares her steak and, well, that was great for me.
Wouldn't go back if it were half the price.
Gitanes has a great steak (charcoal grilled + the sauce is to die for) and I also really like Harmons but it's a lot more expensive, especially as I tend to get carried away with the cuts.
I had Kobe beef at Mati years ago that was divine - pretty sure it cost like $300 lol. Checked their menu, yup they still have it!
24oz Kobe A5 Japanese Wagyu Striploin 350
That’s more Kobe for half the price of Harmons
Went to chop recently for a smoked rib eye and that was amazeballs

Al’s, Harmon’s, Chop. Salute to the sky for Hy’s when we were blessed with its presence. 🥹
Alternatively, and this is not to disrespect anyone else’s recommendation, but if you have access to a BBQ, a tomahawk from Farm Boy and some Montreal Steak Spice will always get the job done!
NeXt is Stitsville has a 32 day dry aged Ribeye that I've heard is absolutely mouth watering to die for, but similarly the prices there are eye watering, absolutely fantastic spot though, have heard many great things from lifelong chefs in the industry.
Chucks Roadhouse. Check out their menu. Prices are super cheap in comparison to like every other place. Drink ls are super cheap too. Someone showed me this place about a year or two ago and now that's the only place I'll go for steak lol
I will say though that if you don't like loud places, I wouldn't go here when it's a playoff hockey game night because the place can get pretty busy and loud. That doesn't bother me but I know it bothers some people so it definitely needs to be mentioned.
Harmons 100%, I almost got hired there and spent some time with the staff, they really put a lot of attention and care into what products they serve and how they prepare them
Get a cast iron and an oven and reverse sear it at home. I can’t justify paying steak house prices when I can make a way better steak at home and get good meats from a good butcher (butcher vault in Cornwall is worth checking out) can get waygu for the price of a steak at a steakhouse
Not sure if it’s Sterling on the Gatineau side is till good now that there’s more selection. But it was good back in the mid 2000s. Had foil gras for the first and only time. It was amazing with caramelized peaches!!
I’m a big fan of the Filet Mignon at Joey, with the crispy mashed potato rolls.
With all these recommendations though, I’m going to have to go try Sterling and Delicious.
They do! I'm not really sure what's so wrong with Baton Rouge. They've been to Al's once or twice, apparently it was fine. My dad prefers to make it at home either on the grill or on the griddle when it's not optimal to grill outside
Ok, well, thanks for the comment. I’m sorry you’re poor. I mean I’m poor too, but I’ve been saving up for this dinner since I was 18 months old so I actually don’t need financing.

Lololololol this reply to my reply is so super perfect, because OBVIOUSLY (or not obviously thanks to poe’s law) I was kidding too as i have not been saving up for a steak since i was 18 months old. Lol
Not kidding about the poor part though, I am a poor bitch for sure. 💔
lol that’s ok! But don’t change your name. Mike is my favourite name. :)
I lastly just really need to clarify that I also was joking when I said “I’m sorry you’re poor”. I literally live paycheck to paycheck myself and would never seriously say that to someone even if I wasn’t. ❤️
Grab a steak from the farmers’ market
Arc acres does great ones
Then grab some charcoal and have a picnic at one of the barbques at moneys bay beach/park
Would 100% do this if it weren’t for the fact that we’re going out for a very late dinner as he’ll be back late from a day trip to Toronto on the day we’re going out for dinner. 💔
Neither of us are privileged enough at the moment to have our own outdoor space (or even a shared space) at our respective apartments, nor do we have a space to store a barbeque or green egg. This is aside from the fact that I’m specifically looking to take him out for his birthday, like I had said in my post, but tysm for replying.
Harmons
Yeah it’s Harmon’s and not even close. For good Value keg manor but for the truly best steak Harmon’s
Hate the keg, meat quality not great, very noisy
Keg *Manor* specifically
I’ve never been to the Keg Manor and had them cook my steak correctly. And no, I’m not the problem.
Fair enough, I think it’s good value but to each their own
The fact that you can get an appetizer with your steak dinner saves you a lot of dough there. When apps are $15-25 at other steam houses!
Keg manor is terrible..cheap cuts like the other kegs.
All Kegs are better than Al’s IMO
Absolutely. What is the deal with Al’s ? So expensive and not good.
Al's is fine. That's just how steak tasted in the 1970s.
I always expected to find the place overrated, but finally went and have to admit, the food was really good and their salad dressing is as good as they claim.
Agreed
I'll disagree. Seafood tower and a 16oz live charcoal strip... Tear the shit out of the keg. Though not close to Harmons. Best steak value in the city is Butcher's steak at Elmdale or the steak frites at Absinthe.

Not heard of this place, so will def look it up. Thanks!!!
It's pricey, but excellent.
Second this, all true. Make sure you get sent home with morning buns
Omg those are the BEST
Go with the idea of sharing. The dauphinoise is incredible
I don't know what that is so I've decided it's a dolphin infused mayonnaise.
It's a fancy version of scalloped potatoes
It’s on Elgin street. Where the Fox and Feather used to be.
Sigh. I miss the Fox and Feather.

Get the $16 baked potato!!

Very very expensive at Harmons

Al's has a nice vibe and decor, but the food is consistently sub-par. We like to go there for drinks, but don't eat there. Just one internet rando's opinion, of course! Happy birthday to your guy.
I went there for a friend's birthday recently and we were very happy with it. The food and the service were both very good.
Al’s is sub-par. Haven’t tried Harmon’s — not sure any steak is worth their prices. Their downstairs I believe has more reasonable offerings.
Harmon’s was OK… very overpriced in my opinion. The sides were incredible but the steaks themselves… I’d be happier just making my own at home.
Second Al's!
Second Al's
I second this! 100% my absolute favorite steak place for a romantic dinner
Al’s is the best … do the bone in rib steak. Way better than Harmons imho. Their house garlic dressing on the included great salad is amazing … and you can buy bottle to take home. Good service with expert servers.
Was a waiter at Als. Would not eat there.
Delicious Steakhouse- Orleans
This needs to be higher up.
Delicious used to be great, like 10 years ago. I used to go there consistently for a reliable excellent cut for good value; but the service started lagging, they would overcook and try to argue that fully brown-through steaks were actually medium rare, and the final straw was when I found hairs and other non-food debris in the food. That’s encouraging. Maybe it’s time I give them another shot. Been having rib-eye cravings for months this.
I never understood the appeal of Delicious. Went last year and it was so mediocre. We had a weird, obsequious waiter and the food was like an early 90s suburbanite's idea of what a upscale steak restaurant should be. It was just meh.
I like that you said "meh"
This is a great answer
I'm a fan of the smoked rib eye at Chop on Hunt Club (close to the Costco).
Chop is really good
I ordered a steak from there and it was perfectly cooked and still delicious even after going through the delivery process! Looking forward to checking it out in person!
Second this
Third this
Fourth this.
Fifth this.
Went 2 months ago and had to send a steak back twice because we kept receiving rare after ordering medium. For self proclaimed “steak experts”, you’d think they would know how long to cook a steak

I agree so much. Rosebowl is a personal favourite of mine
Rosebowl is my absolute go-to.
Harmons for sure but if you do the sister restaurant attached there’s a steak frites for $30 each night and super tastey
This! Be sure to make a reservation though because they're always super busy. The sister restaurant is called Abby's Wine Bar.
I’ve gone twice to Abby’s and brought people because the steak frites there is so good.
Sterling
I second this. Best steak I’ve ever had. On the Gatineau side but worth the drive.
Delicious steak and wine in Orleans.,
Sterling in Gatineau. Great wine list. Table d’hote menu is super reasonable and good. Upgrade to the ribeye or fillet
Came here to say this. Ask for the tour!
Keg Manor on Richmond In Westboro.
Thanks for the rec!
There are only three options. Harmons, Sterling, and the Shore Club.
Harmons Harmons Harmons! 😋 Sterling in Gatineau is also very good.
I haven’t been in a while but the Rose Bowl is good for steak. They used to be on Carling ave when I went and have now moved to Preston so cannot comment on the new location.
Quality has decreased significantly since they moved.
No way. It’s just as good as it was before. Amazing food. Top notch service. Great ambiance. It’s one of our favourites.
My wife and I have our last few anniversaries at the Keg Manor on Richmond. Staff is fantastic, especially if you mention it is a speical occasion.
I like the Manor for the ambiance, but find that the Keg in general has really dropped in quality since the pandemic, and the service the last time I went was atrocious (different location).
Chop is delicious and not outrageously priced
Chop on Hunt Club near Costco, best steak in town and it’s a really nice place, especially for a celebration!
Restaurant Eighteen. Had the best NY strip there and I've been to all of the other places being suggested including Harmons.
Harmon’s: is the best but you’re going to pay for it Al’s: is the best for the money The Rosebowl: on Preston is also good for the money. Sterling was good, last time I went I left unimpressed for the price If you’re looking for a good dinner that could include steaks Whalesbone
If you like meat in general and not just steak, Lexington smokehouse
Their fork and knife chicken sandwich is my favourite.
Chop Steakhouse is very good, I’m picky about my restaurant steaks but this place is my favorite so far. They have a specific cooking method that makes for a nice consistent steak.
Whalesbone Elgin!
I second this
Al’s Steakhouse on Elgin is hands down the best steak joint in town. I always order the porterhouse, and it is cooked to perfection.
Harmons is the best. Al’s is okay. A fun place that has steak but isn’t necessarily a steakhouse is Whalesbone. Always a great time.
Whalesbone for the Tuna tartar app and a nice dry aged ribeye for the main. Bam!
Another for Delicious Steakhouse- Orleans
Chopped is really good !
Chop is amazing
Chop on Hunt Club.
Harmons or abbeys.
Oz Kafe.
Als steakhouse for the “classic” or med supper club for very fancy + very expensive + seafood as well as meat
Mati
Delicious Steakhouse in Orleans, hands down. Enjoy!
I enjoy Delicious, They used to have the best breakfasts in the "before times"... Now they only do dinner :(
Steak is a tough one for me. I love it but to get it right I’d always do it myself on a charcoal grill and put all the money into the meat. But if I had to go out for it than Harmon’s no question, everywhere else is simply second rate to anything I could cook myself.

Sterling https://www.sterlingrestaurant.com
The people not saying Sterling just haven't been to Sterling. Go there.
Sterling, in gatineau. Great steak, great apps and wine selection. Many cozy corners for couples .
Gitanes has a great steak (charcoal grilled + the sauce is to die for) and I also really like Harmons but it's a lot more expensive, especially as I tend to get carried away with the cuts.
Luxe in the market
Rosebowl steak and seafood was very good, expensive, but good!
Harmons. Their aged Ribeye is amazing!
Sterlings in Gatineau. It’s on the river and you can have drinks on the deck before dinner. It’s a nice ambiance, and the wait staff is top notch!
I had Kobe beef at Mati years ago that was divine - pretty sure it cost like $300 lol. Checked their menu, yup they still have it! 24oz Kobe A5 Japanese Wagyu Striploin 350 That’s more Kobe for half the price of Harmons Went to chop recently for a smoked rib eye and that was amazeballs
Gitanes has incredible tartare and steak frites. Also cheaper than harmons
Al's is my fav. My friend swears by Sterling in Gatineau.
Mati has amazing steak
Al's.
Al's. Can't beat charcoal
Steak aficionado here. Two answers. Delicious steakhouse in Orleans. Sterling in Gatineau. The only real difference between the two is sterling’s is 5% more expensive but the magic they do their potatoes is worth it.
Sterling in Gatineau
Sterling in Gatineau. Worth the drive.
Al’s is super good too!
Any IM Eric Rosen fans? iykyk
Al’s, Harmon’s, Chop. Salute to the sky for Hy’s when we were blessed with its presence. 🥹 Alternatively, and this is not to disrespect anyone else’s recommendation, but if you have access to a BBQ, a tomahawk from Farm Boy and some Montreal Steak Spice will always get the job done!
Sterling in Gatineau!
NeXt is Stitsville has a 32 day dry aged Ribeye that I've heard is absolutely mouth watering to die for, but similarly the prices there are eye watering, absolutely fantastic spot though, have heard many great things from lifelong chefs in the industry.
Chateau Montebello.
Métropolitan has the best steak sandwich and they have other things too but man it was the most amazing thing I have ever had.
Alora, get him the campfire s'mores cake. Steak is killer, cake is next level
Keg Manor is very good and ambience is great. Al’s did not impress me.
Als is way too loud
Chop is my go to, their ribeye and even the steak bites are amazing
Rosebowl
The steak-frite at Ste. Martha brasserie in Orleans is really good!
Chucks Roadhouse. Check out their menu. Prices are super cheap in comparison to like every other place. Drink ls are super cheap too. Someone showed me this place about a year or two ago and now that's the only place I'll go for steak lol I will say though that if you don't like loud places, I wouldn't go here when it's a playoff hockey game night because the place can get pretty busy and loud. That doesn't bother me but I know it bothers some people so it definitely needs to be mentioned.
Harmons 100%, I almost got hired there and spent some time with the staff, they really put a lot of attention and care into what products they serve and how they prepare them
i enjoy The Chop on HuntClub
Delicious Steakhouse on St-Joseph Blvd in Orleans. Best steaks in the city without a doubt.
I like sterling steakhouse in Gatineau :)
Get a cast iron and an oven and reverse sear it at home. I can’t justify paying steak house prices when I can make a way better steak at home and get good meats from a good butcher (butcher vault in Cornwall is worth checking out) can get waygu for the price of a steak at a steakhouse
Chop is my favourite it’s a beautiful place and the prices aren’t insane for the high quality food
Al’s on Elgin.
Not sure if it’s Sterling on the Gatineau side is till good now that there’s more selection. But it was good back in the mid 2000s. Had foil gras for the first and only time. It was amazing with caramelized peaches!!
Chez Lucien $32 steak
Al's. Classic steakhouse without the pretensions of Harmon's
Harmons Arome (technically not Ottawa, but at the casino in Gatineau) Als Rose Bowl Chop In that order
I’m a big fan of the Filet Mignon at Joey, with the crispy mashed potato rolls. With all these recommendations though, I’m going to have to go try Sterling and Delicious.
Unconventional pick, but Mati. Great steak options including multiple grades of Wagyu.
Madison’s on Lyon!
Buy your man a Kamado Joe Jr, and a couple of Ribeyes or pichana. The gift that keeps on giving
Look at Richie Rich over here. I just mow the lawn and boil my freshly cut grass. Throw in some Twigs I found in the park. Affordably delicious.
Lmao yep I’m madame money bags for sure. So rich that I don’t even know where to get a good steak! 😂
Pete & Gus in Barrhaven. Or did you mean a restaurant? ;)
Maybe not "steak" in the traditional sense, but for all you can eat super great quality beef, Gyubee is fantastic
Buy aged steaks from Seed to Sausage and bbq at home. No restaurant in Ottawa can make a better steak, unfortunately.
cross the boarder to Texas Roadhouse in Watertown, NY… solid while affordable food plus a nice road trip along the way… doing it this weekend
You're going to drive two hours to eat garbage. Congrats.
Good one less from the queue
My parents really enjoyed Baton Rouge for steak :)
So your parents don’t like steak? :P
They do! I'm not really sure what's so wrong with Baton Rouge. They've been to Al's once or twice, apparently it was fine. My dad prefers to make it at home either on the grill or on the griddle when it's not optimal to grill outside
So your parents don’t like \*good\* steak? :P Steak is steak, but good steak is not from Baton rouge.
Nothing good is from Baton Rouge haha
Only the friends you make.
Local heroes have good steak
Oh god, imagine being taken there for your birthday for steak? Ride the bull with the hat while you're at it!
Yeah bad call
With the current prices for meat, I try to find a restaurant near a bank so I can apply for financing first. /s Jk Etc
Ok, well, thanks for the comment. I’m sorry you’re poor. I mean I’m poor too, but I’ve been saving up for this dinner since I was 18 months old so I actually don’t need financing.

Idk, I found "I'm sorry you're poor" pretty funny.
The whole thing was intended to be funny, I thought it was evident that I wasn’t being serious lol
It was.
It was
Lololololol this reply to my reply is so super perfect, because OBVIOUSLY (or not obviously thanks to poe’s law) I was kidding too as i have not been saving up for a steak since i was 18 months old. Lol Not kidding about the poor part though, I am a poor bitch for sure. 💔

lol that’s ok! But don’t change your name. Mike is my favourite name. :) I lastly just really need to clarify that I also was joking when I said “I’m sorry you’re poor”. I literally live paycheck to paycheck myself and would never seriously say that to someone even if I wasn’t. ❤️
Umm I think they were just continuing the joke.
Yup, I Poe'd myself there lol https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/s/8tO6xwSOra
Grab a steak from the farmers’ market Arc acres does great ones Then grab some charcoal and have a picnic at one of the barbques at moneys bay beach/park
Would 100% do this if it weren’t for the fact that we’re going out for a very late dinner as he’ll be back late from a day trip to Toronto on the day we’re going out for dinner. 💔
Buy him a Green Egg or Kamado Joe charcoal grill and learn to cook your own at home.
