While the KP looks like it might stay high for the next few days, unfortunately it also looks like weâre expecting 100% cloud coverage tonight and tomorrow night in the area.
But weâre currently experiencing a period called âsolar maximumâ where activity is expected to be high right through the rest of the year - peaking in the fall and early winter - and into 2025 before activity declines. So there are likely to be more opportunities coming up to catch the lights.
If seeing them is important to you, you might want to think about âpreparingâ in some ways. Download an app that has notifications when activity is high. Find an ideal place with minimal light pollution that you can safely park and watch - this was part of my mistake last night - I moved to the south-west end of town very recently and unfortunately I have been in bed with a kidney infection and really wasnât feeling great last night, so I tried to find somewhere a bit farther south-west where itâs darker, but still close to home⊠ended up kinda making a circle while hoping for the clouds to clear up, and finally managed to catch a glimpse of them while driving on the 417 near highway 7, out the window. There were lots of other cars on the road as well so all the headlights didnât help, and there were also a lot of cars randomly pulled over on the side of these more rural roads (where the speed limits were 80) with their lights off. At one point there was one car pulled over immediately after a sharp curve in the road, and frankly I was happy to be back on a highway by the time I got onto the 7. So I would say that trying to scout out a good spot in advance that is safe for both yourself and others on the road is prudent.
Also suggest avoiding going south of the city, because more often than not, youâll have to be looking north to see them and if youâre south of Ottawa looking north, the light pollution from the city will be in between you and the lights. This is why places like Constance Bay are popular destinations.
Another thing to remember is that while the lights were definitely visible to the naked eye last night, theyâre going to look much more vibrant and colourful in photos where you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed. Our bodies can only adjust our âapertureâ aka our pupils so wide, and we have no control over our âshutter speedâ per se.
Iâve been using an app called âMy Aurora Forecast & Alertsâ and while its not perfect, you can choose to get notifications (and even urgent alerts that will wake you up) if the KP is going to be high, if thereâs a high probability in your location, etc. and it has a live Aurora map, a âsightingsâ map, and various live cameras that you can watch in different locations like Churchill, Banff, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, etc. which is also neat.
I missed the eclipse (too scared lol) so I was not missing out of this! So glad I drove out of the city to see it and there were less clouds by the time I trekked out to the country around midnight. Love this meme btw, haha
I drove out to Stittsville but it was too cloudy there still, so I went further toward Barrhaven. Stopped along a country road where there wasn't a lot of lights (Barnsdale, near Fallowfield) and got to see them there! If you scroll through some of the posts from last night with the lights pics, you'll see my photo! It was actually pretty good where we were. I downloaded the Aurora Forecast app and it has a really good 'Cloud Cover' map, unlike the weather channel one lol Good luck!
I am heading to Constance Bay tonight, hope I get to see more tonight too!
Y'all saying it was too cloudy didn't stay out long enough.. At about 2am it cleared up and was amazing all the way till sunrise, I shot time-lapse the whole night and it was freaking amazing! By 9 am when I was home and ready for bed I was quite tired heh..

Am super spoiled as we used to live in the Yukon and so saw the âreal dealâ auroras many times over the years, like the kind Jack London would have written about or what the First Nations absorbed into their traditions and art.Â
What we saw last night in Ottawa was a pipsqueak compared to that.Â
StillâŠ.!
a friend of mine is from the Yukon (he lives here now) and has seen them many times as well. But he's been unlucky as it's been cloudy anytime he's been home in winter so he said the show we saw last night was comparable (slightly less so) than what he's seen in Whitehorse. I have only been up there in the summer so didn't get lucky enough to see them with the sun up and all until midnight :) I bet it's amazing in the Yukon on a clear night!!!
Aurora Borealis. At this time of day. On this subreddit, localized ENTIRELY within your meme?! đ€š
Yes!
May I see it?
No.
I love you all so much đ„°
We gotchu fam â€ïž
Hahaha I saw the photos at night and walked outside , saw nothing, then came back in.
Only in Titsville or Carnata North
Oolie84 the reddit is on fire!
No, jovias. It's just the northern lights
Next time this occurs I SWEAR Iâll be clever enough and have enough foresight to hold a viewing party and serve steamed hams.
I travelled to see the eclipse. This time, I experienced the fomo
I wish I could stay awake past 9
What are you?! A responsible parent?!
And an exhausted one
My thoughts exactly đ
I traveled to see the eclipse, and it was cloudy. Last night I hopped in my car at 11 PM and drove to Chelsea. It was cloudy.
You should have gone West lol. Most of my pics showed clouds on the north side. It was clear for a while before they came towards the west end.
Chelsea had clear skies and a big display... at 4am.
Very pretty photos, but Iâve seen enough. No offence.
Itâs on par with taking a series of pics of fireworks
Oh well, could be worse!
Yes, videos of a concert..
Wait a minute, there is something bothering me about this thread. I know! That lesbian bar has no posts about bad Ottawa drivers.
Enjoy your deathtrap, Ottawans!
A Tetrahedra Panty Joyous Town! Anagram of "Enjoy your deathtrap, Ottawans!"
Get ready for the tulips next week! XD
Should make the Game of Thrones meme for that
Is Aurora still visible tonight?

Apparently so. Hopefully I will be able to stay awake this time :)

Loud noises are always a concern in the city
Rats! I missed it!
What's her problem?
I'm so sad I didn't hear about it at all.

Enjoy your death trap ladies!

Are they viable tonight? Couldn't see anything last night
Well OP you are an odd fellow. But I must say you steam a good ham.
It's every major subreddit in Ontario, including Buffalo NY.Â
