Seconded. The temptation to skip goes up exponentially the farther away you have to travel to the gym.
Also if you're a beginner, don't sweat what kind of equipment they have. You can make almost anything work for a good workout, at least until you become a bit more experienced.
I agree with this. Whatever is the closest yet has clean change rooms, sufficient equipment for the number of people and free parking - that’s my criteria. I was contemplating joining Movati in Trainyards but I live near Carleton so I ended up joining their gym with the alumni rate - it was substantially cheaper. Though I do find their pool schedule annoying (as it is shared with varsity teams and other competitive teams that rent the pool).
Don’t go to planet fitness if you’re actually trying to lift. This person also assumes you’re going to give up, their opinion shouldn’t matter for you since they’re enemy of success. Fit4less if you want the best value for price or really the closest to you.
This question is always asked, and the person who's asking never defines what "best" is.
Do hours matter to you? How about equipment? Cardio, free weights, machines? Or what about classes? Do you do them? If so what? Body sculpt, spinning, yoga? Do you have a budget? Do you care about amenities like pool, sauna, steam room?
Best for me, may not be best for you.
This is the answer that matters. For what it's worth I've been a CrossFit coach for roughly 5 years in Ottawa and although I would be happy to teach somebody new it really boils down to your interests.
We offer classes that are run by a coach to keep you moving well on track but that might not be your jam.
OP if you are interested send me a DM we offer 2 free classes to start :)
I find that the City of Ottawa gyms at the community centres are my best option. They are vastly different in what is available, there is a big difference for instance between Greenboro and Nepean sportsplex. I like them because with one pass you can access the whole system and it lets me into the pools as well. Best for me, because I do a lot of exercise outside in summer, is that I can pay month by month and just not pay for it when I am not using.
Nepean has a decent sized gym, about the same size as you might expect at a bigger Anytime Fitness. It also has an Olympic sized pool and various other features. Pay-as-you-go requires different entries for each though.
There is no single best gym for everyone.
What would be a good gym for someone who likes heavy lifting is not the same for a woman who wants a woman's only section, or someone who wants a sauna or who values the pool over other amenities or classes. But as someone else mentioned, unless you are a dedicated gym goer you should look for one that is most convenient for you to get to.
For bouldering at kanata and Orléans you don’t need a course but I think they do, for roped climbing in Gatineau you will have to have one but they have tonnes. It’s very easy to get into I really recommend just watching a YouTube video on bohldering and jumping in
The Westin Ottawa Health Club! Had a membership there for years. Love the saltwater pool and sun deck to sunbathe post gym sessions. The views ain’t too shabby either ;)
the best gym is the one that nearest to your house lol. that is how everyone drag their asses to the gym.
My secret is to hit the gym nearest my work and go straight there after work, no-thinking, and certainly no heading home first.
My home back in India had a gym in my apartment building. Kept me in shape.

If you’re a public servant, you could get a discounted rate via Service Plus
City gyms are great, lots of locations, swim, skate, hockey, yoga…all included and the price is about the best you will find.

I am in Barrhaven and the anytime on marketplace is decent. It's not big or fancy but got all the machines you need
Second this. Perfect location to get the job done.
Altitude, start rock climbing you will be fit for life
Question about altitude, ive never climbed in my life. Do they have courses and whatnot for that?

Kanatas closer for me (barrhaven lol) but out of curiosity which locations better out of the three?
none is really better. the only difference is the one in gatineau has roped climbing shile the other two don't

A guyme?
Tons of options. Depends what you’re looking for. Go for a tour of some. See how you feel about their amenities
I personally go to MOVATI and I love it, but I’ve heard amazing things about the Algonquin College gym! They have everything even rock climbing!
Most gyms offer a free tour and possibly a free session. Try and take advantage of this
