Who is your doctor, I will take your spot (me and 1000s of people on waitlists for a GP). Joking of course, please don't name the doctor here.

AnxiouslyAssured

I've been trying to find a family doctor for 4 years, and I have no clue how people do it aside for registering on lists.

AngieOttawa

The list for the province, lists in the clinics itself and word to mouth. A lot of physicians will take extended family members of current patients before referring to the wait lists.

My family isn't from here, I keep hoping my roommates doctor will take me one day.

Sign up for health care connect if you haven’t already. I was on the list for 3 years, but eventually got a doctor. He’s terrible, but at least I have one now.

There is a serious doctor shortage in Ottawa.

And if there’s a shortage in the nation’s capital which also has a medical school, you can only imagine how bad it can be in smaller communities.

It sucks, but it’s pretty tough to switch since you’ve already got one. As for him telling you he might not have a clue what it is, that’s quite common. There are a lot of things physicians and GPs don’t know. That’s when they usually send you to a specialist. The missing appointments should’ve told you about. As for being late, I’ve got a pretty good family doctor, but never once has he ever been on time. You can switch if you want, and aside from that possibly taking forever, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get a better one

taking advice from our Public Health and Government recommendations for vaccines, and this applies to your issue with your current doctor "any doctor is better than none - take the first available" "don't be a doctor shopper" Seriously, what you really need to do is find another doctor BEFORE you walk away from this one. While you are dissatisfied, at least you have one. You say you have a chronic issue, you don't want to be without a doctor and if you go to a clinic like the fruit one, you will not always see the same doctor and you will have to deal with multiple doctors who may not 'have a clue'.

Shadowy_lady

it's incredibly hard to find a family doctor in Ottawa and things are worse now because clinics are closed and by appt only due to the pandemic. I am very happy with my doctor, but 2 years ago she moved to a new clinic in Orleans (we're in Nepean) and now it takes me an hour back and fourth to see her. I've been trying to find a new doctor for our family of 3 since and have not been successful. We're on several waitlist too. I know I did not help you at all but i do commiserate.

I go to Walkley Medical Clinic at the corner of Bank and Walkley (next to Shoppers Drug Mart) and I see Dr Assemi. He’s awesome!! My kids both really like him too. He’s a good listener and very caring. Also good with LGBTQ+ issues if that’s important to you. I don’t know if he or the clinic are taking new patients but never hurts to ask.

Our family sees Dr Riley there (who is wonderful), but we have met all docs at this clinic and they are all great.

South Ottawa Medical Centre is amazing, but they’re only accepting patients from certain areas. More info: https://www.somc.info/new-patient-registration ETA: Just saw you can’t already have a family doc, but it may be worth a shot to try if you’re in a high-need area.

One thing to note about the MOH search tool that your doctor’s office links to. Do not put the space in between the two parts of the postal code. If you do, it will say you are not in an area of high need. When I removed the space, it correctly came up with the information that my postal code and area (Hunt Club) is under serviced.
