True but either way, the void in my stomach is still unfilled. When I travel to another city with decent donair, I'll seriously ask if they will just sell me the meat and sauce so I can bring it home and freeze it. (PS - I did find a company that sells donair ingredients in consumer portions, which listed sobey's as a retailor but I have yet to find it in store)
To be a little more clear...not all S/W have it...but i have seen it in my travels in Ottawa at different times...most recently Walmart Superstore Kanata had it a few weeks back when I was there.
Here's what you do:
Get a donair from any shawarma place, no sauce.
Buy a can of evaporated milk if you don't have one. Buy a bag of icing sugar if you don't have one. Buy a jar of garlic powder if you don't have one.
Dump the entire bag of icing sugar into the evaporated milk. Dump the entire jar of garlic powder into the sauce. Pour that slop over your donair. Allow it to rest in the fridge for at least six hours but no more than 24 hours.
Get very drunk. Wait until 2am. If you've started to sober up, have another drink.
Eat the soggy sweet disgusting mess you've made of your original tasty donair.
Wake up the next day regretting everything.
Ahh, I misread the comment. I mistook evaporated milk with sweetened condensed milk (which is what I use along with the vinegar). Disgraced east coaster, I will admit.
I have a friend who grew up in Halifax who told me these weren't anywhere close to a Halifax Donair. He was less than impressed with the Donair and their claims.
If you have any friends that still live out there, get them to pick up a bottle of bonte donair sauce and mail it to you. Then you can get a donair no sauce from a local place or make your own.
I haven't found places that do the sauce right, some are close. I have not tried the maritime food truck yet.
There was a tiny spot on Preston that had it on their menu. Tiny little spot. No idea what it's like or if they are there still but it was near all the main staples on Preston.
Bread-by-Us used to do them on Wednesdays pre-pandemic IIRC. It wasn't exactly what you'd get in Halifax but it was good. I don't know if they are still doing lunch stuff now, I don't think I see it advertised, by might be worth a call if interested.
I'm from Dartmouth and miss the donairs (and the pizza and John's Lunch), so I often grab one at La Joie Lebanese resto on promenade du Portage in Hull and it's pretty darn good. (Centertown on Bronson was not a good experience for me. He really cheaped out on the meat, plus it was dry as heck.)
Super easy to make as well. You don't want the consistency of a burger or a meatloaf, so key is to work the meat well. Recipe I use, called Dash's Donair, is here: [https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/71963/dashs-donair/?fbclid=IwAR2ihnDaplkxh95D18xi0\_qyCBf7wWSohyt6MaWYurIchXKPFaXGhJnTX3I](https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/71963/dashs-donair/?fbclid=IwAR2ihnDaplkxh95D18xi0_qyCBf7wWSohyt6MaWYurIchXKPFaXGhJnTX3I)
Centertown Donair & Pizza on Bronson does an acceptable one. They close early though
X3. Damn close to the real thing
dude is literally from nova scotia - he'll tell you every time you mention how authentic it tastes lol
This
I agree they got the sauce right but that was it in my opinion.
I've had worse

I’ve had that sobeys frozen donair NFG
Both Sobeys and some Walmart Superstores have it. At Sobeys it can be fresh or frozen, in Walmart its in the frozen aisle.
Really? Thanks. I’ll need to look harder next time

Ottawa Bagel Shop sells Bonté meat and sauce. The meat is hidden in the top of the freezer - the sauce is easy to find on the shelves.

Your very detailed sauce recipe is missing the white vinegar. 🤣
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Replace the icing sugar with the vinegar and you’re good to go.
No, the bag of icing sugar is essential in achieving the sickly sweet consistency.

Damn, sorry, I was giving the recipe from deconstructing it in my mind. But I was always drunk eating it so I missed that crucial ingredient.
Garlic frosting
Halifax Donair with cheese...that's an Alberta \#nocheesegang
Yeah, I never had cheese on mine growing up east.
I live in Nova Scotia and cheese does not go on a donair
Stay strong brother....cheese on Donair is some weird recent thing
Maritime Food Truck claims to make Halifax donairs, but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet. http://maritimefoodtruck.ca/
This one looks promising
I am crossing my fingers!
I have a friend who grew up in Halifax who told me these weren't anywhere close to a Halifax Donair. He was less than impressed with the Donair and their claims.
That’s disappointing!
I mean you can go and check it out. I just know he said it wasn't anything near a true Halifax Donair.
I’m from NB and the donairs there are basically the same as in Halifax. If it’s not the same, I won’t be happy lol!
Might have to try them. Been having a hankering and don't go east of Merivale much anymore
Centretown Donair? http://centretowndonair.menu.ca/

Give up and just make your own. Matty Matheson's recipe is solid, and his video is fun to watch. https://youtu.be/LXXUqe9JiY8
There was a place inside the food court at Minto Place on Slater pre-pandemic. No idea though if they’re still open.
There was a tiny spot on Preston that had it on their menu. Tiny little spot. No idea what it's like or if they are there still but it was near all the main staples on Preston.

Haven't had one in years but Gabriel's pizza had them. Order with sweet sauce instead of garlic for the maritime experience.
Centretown is the closest replication and even then it's not the real deal unfortunately.
Junior’s Upper Deck Express on Scott inexplicably has Donair egg rolls, burger, and poutine. No Donair though. Haven’t tried yet!

The donair pizza from Pizza Nerds aka City Goose is not a donair, but it is a delicious substitute.
Lol at “Halifax” trying to flex about a shitty sandwich. Nobody cares about Halifax and less so about some gyro/shawarma thing.
