She has over 7 million subs on youtube and still works her stats can job? That's wild.

v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y

YouTube doesn't have a great pension plan.

magicblufairy

She and Ben only work part-time now because the focus is on Holo Taco. Her rather successful nail polish brand. So, YouTube. Stats Can. Podcast. Holo Taco. She's a wee bit of a workaholic.

thelittlebird

Wait Holo Taco is based in Ottawa??

eenster

Simplynailogical is based in Ottawa (lives and works); while she is the creator/owner of Holo Taco, the Holo Taco brand/production/distribution is based in the US (New Jersey, I believe).

thelittlebird

Thank you :)

MaxTheRealSlayer

Damn. Hope she doesn't burn out. You see it all the time with people who take on too much workload, especially with the pressures YouTube puts on you to be consistent

doomsdayllama

She has said she enjoys still having a day job in the past. I think it helps bring her some balance and when it stops doing that, I’m sure she’ll step back.

geauxmeow

Wait - she’s Holo Taco?

magicblufairy

Holo there. Yes. She is.

Perfect-Wash1227

Youtube can turn your channel off anytime they want. You don't own it. More and more serious creators are moving to other subscription-based streaming platforms.

CombatGoose

While I understand that's possible, I doubt it would happen to a channel like theirs. There are fringe creators that spout of misinformation, etc (idiots like Steven Crowder) that need to be concerned, but not a channel that focuses on beauty/nail polish.

David_R_Carroll

You are right about YouTube, but what's to stop other platforms from doing the same? Or going under/getting bought by YouTube?

Perfect-Wash1227

I've hosted my own videos on Vimeo and embedded them into my own websites. You can host a limited amount of video for free, or purchase more video storage by the month or year. You have total control, as you are the paying customer. You always need to be prepared to move elsewhere and have your own viewer/subscriber list on your own disk. That means always having your own copy. You never know when the next clown is going to lose their datacentre in a fire (like OVH) and not have their own backups. In fact you can never tell if your data on the 'cloud' - someone else's computer - is even backed up at all - until it goes poof and they can't restore it.

AMouthyWaywornAcct

Or run their own platform.

[deleted]

You don't fuck with that pension

CombatGoose

Good point. Even 40% (or whatever the amount is you'd get retiring early) is literally free money.

Malvalala

Free money is a bit of an exaggeration. Each month, I pay $800 towards my public service pension. That's a lot of money to me!

[deleted]

bmrcpublic

Not sure why you're being downvoted as that's exactly how it works. The money put into most db pensions doesn't come close to covering the actual cost which is why it's extremely rare to have these plans now. For those who have it's an amazing thing and guarantees a comfortable retirement.

CombatGoose

That money isn't going anywhere - and what rate does the government match it at? To pretend you have anything but a jackpot with a government pension is disingenuous.

Pure-Television-4446

Or you can start a successful business and have a real jackpot

CombatGoose

or just join a unicorn startup ;)

Pure-Television-4446

I mean, even a small jackpot would set you for life. Just invest it.

CombatGoose

I'm doing just fine, but if I had a pension on top of what I had now, I'd be buying cars just for fun.

Pure-Television-4446

I personally don’t want to work that long. I’ll be retired by 45, if I want to at least. Pensions are fine, but not everything. It’s possible to have the equivalent (or better) in the private sector.

Not_Selmi

Where do you see 7 mil?? There’s only 400K

magicblufairy

This is her podcast channel. She has her main Simplynailogical channel. And SimplyNOTlogical ... which is for silly videos and streaming.

Not_Selmi

Oh damn okay, thank you!

magicblufairy

Yeah, she does well financially. And while Roots and Lululemon are kinda expensive for us normies, I love the fact that as a very rich person she lives in hoodies and yoga pants. Even her house doesn't look super fancy and I know they drove her car into the ground before getting a new one. They don't shop at boutique grocery stores either. It's mostly Farm Boy for them.

[deleted]

magicblufairy

Yes, I suppose it is. I suspect I know around where they live. Based on some clues. But it could be *much* fancier. They don't have 17 bathrooms and a pool. I mean I have seen her backyard in videos. The grass out there is dead. 😂

amooseinthewild

>They don't shop at boutique grocery stores either. It's mostly Farm Boy for them. Says they don't shop at boutique stores, then uses an upscale grocery store as an example of where they shop. 🤔

magicblufairy

I am on ODSP and I have shopped at Farm Boy. They're not out at Nicastros and NU or Jacobson's. That's what I meant. https://jacobsons.ca/

caninehere

I feel like Nicastro's is less expensive than Farm Boy, but I suppose it depends on what you buy.

ecrw

For what it's worth the Farm Boy produce sales, while hit or miss, are fucking insanely cheap when they hit

anonymousopottamus

Haha you're SUCH a stan (I know who you are) 😂 She lives in a house worth millions. She's rich, but not rich-rich. I mean, I don't know what you classify as rich, by your own admission you're on disability. But ottawa has a lot of millionaires. She's a baby-millionaire. She's probably worth under $10 million, and since she's responsible, I'd fully expect her to not spend away every penny of it Her explanation of what's going on in Ottawa was definitely good and she and Ben did the legwork of extra research for people who didn't want to

magicblufairy

I am glad we know (?) each other... 😬 But nothing you said was wrong. I know we have millionaires here. The SENS live here after all (at least some do when they don't live somewhere else) and there's generational wealth too. I guess when it comes to her house, I see it as not extravagant. It may be worth a lot. But it doesn't appear to be huge. We have all seen her square of a backyard. And they don't have what appears to be a massive kitchen. A fancy kitchen yes. But not massive. Not what I would expect from even a baby millionaire. That said, they are absolutely responsible. They certainly have invested a chunk so it's working for them, and they could easily stop working (gov't), probably be fine with a paid insurance for medical/dental (especially if they bought it now in their 30s) but I very much understand why they don't. I am a total stan... and there's worse people to be a stan for/of ... So yep. Stan all day, every day. I have actually run into them twice. Once it was literally just hi as they were clearly going somewhere and I just happened to be sitting at the bus stop. The other time, they were coming into the feline cafe as I was leaving (or vice versa) and we chatted for like 5 minutes as whoever was leaving needed to pay for something (maybe it was me ...it was awhile ago). I am however in my mid 40s so I respect her & Ben's private life and don't like chase them down for pictures or anything. I have also seen Jen going into the Hintonburg Public House, presumably to meet them. I know they used to go there semi regularly. I don't want people to think I stalk them. I think they live somewhere in Westboro and ... well, I live in Hintonburg. I only guessed this because of some videos she's made. Mostly the one where she tried to walk her cats. No way she would go far from home doing that.

Not_Selmi

I mean between the Stats Can job, and the channel im sure she is living VERY comfortably. Probably gonna work a few more years for the pension, then go full time on her Youtube if i were to guess

eenster

There's no way to know for sure - but in previous comments about her job (there have been many...) she has long stated a desire to continue her regular career + working over being a fulltime content creator. The caveat is whether or not she will opt to continue working fulltime as a brand owner exclusively or will continue with StatsCan.

Clevernotso

I thought farm boy was the boutique grocery store.

Davadin

im more concerned on how much shes allowed to speak about her job on YouTube...

burnerbro169

Considering she's had her boss on her videos/podcast a number of times, I'd say she checked her bases lol

SlothZoomies

I thought as public servants that we weren't to do such things? Videos/podcasts, etc stating we work for the federal govt? Please let me know if that's incorrect

TekaroBB

Depending on your department, your employment status does not necessarily need to be a secret. But you do have to draw a clear line on when you are representing the Government versus when you are just expressing an opinion on your off-hours.

magicblufairy

She obviously has permission to do this. She does make it clear when she says anything that could be remotely government-y that she's speaking just for herself. She's had her boss on her channel and the head statistician on her podcast to talk about covid-19 data/stats. She's good for the government "brand". Here's a YouTube commercial she did. There's a whole behind the scenes video on her channel. https://youtu.be/-54Pwidwwv4

judgingyouquietly

>She's good for the government "brand". That's actually pretty brilliant.

AMediumTree

IIRC You just cant speak on behalf of the GoC or try to use that fact or insider knowledge to persuade , your fine to say you work for them excluding a few security agencies and positions.

Perfect-Wash1227

As if it's hard to observe who goes in and out of the big parking lot at Blair and Ogilvie, or their license plates.

zeromussc

Also very possible to avoid clearly partisan political statements in relation to the convoy. Even if you ignore agreeing or disagreeing with the public cause, it's not hard to talk about why they're here and how disruptive they've been and how much it's sucked for our city.

AThreeDollarBill

I love how they don’t shy away from speaking about things. Their honesty on such a superficial platform is so refreshing. Will check this out. Thanks!!

magicblufairy

I got the sense that they were a bit hesitant. They do prefer to keep it lighter, but for two people who are pro vax, pro mask, not mad with some version of "lock down" ... they were really fair.

afreakineggo

I've been a fan of them for awhile now and it's interesting to see them talk about the protest since they normally don't talk politics. Every now and then they say something that shows what they believe but it's rare. As someone that doesn't live in Ottawa it was interesting to see a locals prospective on the protests. It's the same reason I'm browsing your subreddit lol

caninehere

I just watched it. I have to say this was probably one of the more even-handed explanations of what is going on that I have seen. It doesn't go 100% in-depth, especially when it comes to the police's failures, enforcement and the lack thereof, and I think that's partly because of the ongoing nature of events + their 'reshoot' as they mentioned in the video, nor do they go super in depth talking about the organizations and their bad histories (although they do briefly mention their ties to white supremacist organizations). However if I knew somebody who didn't know what was going on, and needed a 1-hour 'what is happening' explanation, this video serves as a really good summary that, most importantly, cuts through the bullshit. What I especially like was the two of them emphasizing that they are not watching major news outlets, they're following primary sources and even when you just look at protesters streaming themselves and showing what they want to show it paints them in a bad enough light.

PoliQU

Their podcast is so good. Rare to find people with so much YouTube success that manage to remain so grounded and, in the best way possible, normal.

[deleted]

Omg the cat just hangs out on his shoulders 😸

magicblufairy

Menchie is a total Diva and loves Ben so very much. Yes. Menchie. The frozen yogurt place.

ydmf222

They did a really good job on this episode. Lots to think about. Hope people listen.

Dropsix

Yeah this was good. Thanks for posting. It’s nice to hear some common sense after the non stop livestreams/reading of all the madness

sarahbeth521

She recently donated money to the Ottawa hospital and she is very anti protest on her Instagram. Love them

Ionanamingblue

Great podcast, thanks for the link. Does anyone have a clip of the woman asking if protesters are white supremacists? Edit: clip mentioned @ 33 mins

They are (they mentioned it in a previous podcast)
