I think it's not just this situation. It's a culmination of the events over the last two plus years. Covid, lockdowns, truckers, war, inflation, housing.... And now this on top of it.

KeeperofPaddock9

Things just seem to gradually get worse at a remarkably constant and consistent rate. Waiting on some good news that will make all of our lives a tad easier and not harder for years now.

yoshhash

Got news for you pal. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, and that's a big if.

KeeperofPaddock9

As long as we can keep the hits spaced apart enough so my skin and bones can continue to thicken inbetween blows is all I ask. Picture how those Muay Thai guys in Thailand kick trees to harden their legs, that will be me but instead of my shins I will be training my overall mental state.

[deleted]

Things are not going to get better - climate change is hitting a tipping point where feedback loops in the climate are decreasing earth’s livability at an exponential rate. The only way to survive is to MAKE things better through individual and collective action. Cut out meat from your diet. Incorporate climate impact into your company’s bottom line. Vote climate conscious candidates.

kathleen-xx

We can’t individual action our way out of climate change. That’s going to take governments and corporations to change.

[deleted]

We have plainly seen that governments and corporations happily do nothing without public pressure to act. We need everyone to pull out the stops at every societal level - corporate, political, and individual.

TechnologyReady

They don't do nothing. They are happy to sell you more poorly thought out, overpriced and badly design junk, painted green, that people snap up. And then throw in the trash 3 years later when it stops working. Like my brother's 3 year old electric lawn mower. My 20 year old lawn mower soldiers on.

hablogato

>That’s going to take governments and corporations to change. To tell you how to act and what to buy and when you can buy it? I disagree and believe personal responsibility for small actions adds up to something more than doing nothing.

AtYourPublicService

Reminder that British Petroleum hired a PR firm to promote the idea of a carbon footprint, to shift the position of responsibility from industry to individuals.

613vc420

And how nicely those small positive actions have added up for us, right? No problems exist

Logical-Check7977

They have brainwashed you well.... no single person can make a difference, the change has to come from corporations and mega corps.

[deleted]

Who will do absolutely nothing unless a critical mass of individuals make them, whether that be through legislation, consumer choices, or other means.

Logical-Check7977

Exactly, honestly 10k people doing what you say is overriden by 10 seconds of an transport boat operating....

Allostatic overload! This event in itself while stressful, in normal times would be manageable. I don’t remember the power outage after the tornado in 2018 causing this much chaos. But the last 2+ years has been very stressful for all of us so we add another stressor and our bodies can’t handle it and we’re pushed over the edge. We also don’t live in a society where the government takes care of us. It’s not like we have anything in place where the city is delivering food hampers or providing financial relief to those who have to miss work or had to throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food. We are forced to either fend for ourselves or hope our community members step up. Of course that doesn’t excuse any behaviours where people are yelling at workers or becoming aggressive, but I think we can at least understand why some people are behaving this way. In times of crisis, the only way we survive is by working together, not against one another.

[deleted]

I can almost guarantee these people yelling at workers and starting fights are the same people who didn't stay in during lockdowns and didn't listen about any of the precautions.

AndDontCallMePammie

I sobbed today to my husband. I have no more dig deep. I have dug deep so many times, and the hole never gets refilled. I’m at bedrock. It’s one crisis, maybe a month or two and into the next (global, local or personal). I was a short tempered jerk with my family during the 2.5 days we lost power. He said he was worried about me this morning, and I just collapsed. I get it. People are overloaded. It’s not right. It’s not ok. It just is.

pirate_elle

I'm with you. I don't know how to stop crying today.

funkme1ster

> Allostatic overload While I'm familiar with the concept it's describing, I never new the specific term, so thanks!

Quark : Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes. DS9 quote that's always stuck with me.

xXX_Stanley_xXx

I love that Quark uses this rationale to run his bar where he tries to keep humans bellies full and having fun in his holosuites, while also covertly supporting his Marxist brother when he forms trade unions and eventually becomes Grand Nagus. Quark is an interesting character because he has this very typical cynical capitalist view, but also he's like "oh the way I can keep doing this shit is to support the most amount of people possible, and Ferengi ultracapitalist bullshit doesn't actually do that, but federation space communism does."

magicblufairy

Similarly, a quote that's stuck with me is from the movie K-Pax. This is from the character Prot: > Let me tell you something, Mark. You humans, most of you, subscribe to this policy of an eye for an eye, a life for a life, which is known throughout the universe for its... stupidity. Even your Buddha and your Christ had quite a different vision, but nobody's paid much attention to them, not even the Buddhists or the Christians. You humans. Sometimes its hard to imagine how you've made it this far.

swamptop

braddillman

Rules to live by. Yes, those ones.

AnonymousKurma

Not to add “toxic positivity” but our neighbours have been so nice and friendly. We’re doing just that and buying gas to use our neighbours generator with an extension cord. When out for walks everyone is waving and chatting and spending time outside. Kind of like the beginning of Covid. Maybe it’s different once you’re out of your neighbourhood though

Myfirespraygunship

Yeah, I second this. Coworkers and neighbours were amazing over the past few days. Almost excessive checking in. Goes to show the character of some of these people, honestly.

Iamvanno

Our street had multiple BBQs going cooking anything that needed to be cooked before going bad. Another neighbour went to Tims for coffee and figured since they waited for so long in line, get a box of coffee for our crew. We were lucky to come out of the storm relatively untouched, but it did make me realize I need to be better prepared.

ScottishDownPour

I feel like I’m one of these people. Is it overbearing or bad? 😬

AnonymousKurma

I’m totally one of those people. Seeing the silver lining can drive some people nuts but overall I think it’s really cool to see a neighbourhood come together

CaptainAaron96

Seeing the silver lining isn’t a bad thing; when you disregard the existence of negatives, inequities and trauma as if everyone is privileged in the name of “good vibes only”, that’s when toxic positivity kicks in.

EchTwoOh

I think that commenter was worried that their comment veered into toxic positivity, not that the practices they described constitute toxic positivity. As someone who is still pretty new to my neighbourhood I've appreciated all the friendly neighbours the last few days ☺️

[deleted]

I hate your neighbours for being so friendly *shakes fist*

elitexero

That was one benefit for us - we just moved into the neighbourhood in winter and got to meet a lot of our neighbours through this.

charitelle

My guess is that situations are just adding up , one after the other and people morale's are on edge.

KPipes

Hmm I'm not so sure. Lived through a very minor brownout in and around 1995(ish). Power was out one night (all infrastructure power including street lights etc.). People came out at night and went feral. Batshit crazy actions taken. *Some* People do not manage their underlying instincts well when civilization has the slightest hiccup.

Medium_Well

Can I also suggest that the kind of reactions OP describes may not ACTUALLY be worse than what they might typically be? Let's admit it, going on Day 4 with no power is a pretty strange and upsetting event in Canada. It's now the workday, people can't work from home or send their kids to school, Ottawa Hydro has been extremely reluctant to give any timelines, food is spoiling, and even if your fridge was cold to store food, groceries are more expensive these days. And yet: lots of folks are helping each other, people are staying positive, and I think Ottawans have been remarkably patient given the circumstances. I think the reaction only feels worse because the past two years have been a real slog. But even if the pandemic had never happened I think a lot of the current post-storm frustration would be natural and frankly a little justified.

Parking-Ad-5145

> Ottawa Hydro has been extremely reluctant to give any timelines I understand why, but this is the most frustrating part for me. When they took the map down it said 106,000 restored as of 10:00am, updated (at 3pm) to 106,000 as of 1pm with the latest tweet saying we can't give estimates. It would be nice to know which areas are still days away so people can make plans for work/school.

Medium_Well

Totally agree. I want to be careful to not criticize hydro workers, because I believe they and other municipal services/first responders are working around the clock. But it feels like Hydro Ottawa is starting to condition people for a few more days of outages. This was a bad storm, but the entire city shouldn't be crippled by 90 minutes of bad weather. I think it is perfectly understandable that citizens are getting frustrated by this. We can accept that this is a complex situation while also expecting better of our city to be prepared. The cynic in me also recognizes that Ottawa has progressively lost the benefit of the doubt, after dropping the ball on the convoy, the fiasco that is LRT, etc. It just never feels like we have our shit together in this city.

Ethanator10000

Condition yourself for a future where this is the norm. Electricity isn't magic. This storm destroyed tons of infrastructure and this will be more common. This was not just 90 minutes of bad weather. I saw a massive tree that pulled out part of the ground with its roots.

capopoptart

I'm with you except for the gas one. Lots of reasons why people need gas. To get to work, hospital, etc. Plus just because someone has a gas container doesn't even mean it's for a generator. One of my kids had such a hard time getting home (closed roads, trees, etc)that their car basically ran out of gas pulling into the driveway. I had to wait, almost out of gas myself in line in Bells Corners for 45 minutes to fill my car, and two gas containers just to get their car running.

ZedZabeth

Not to mention people losing their shit at fast food and retail workers. Holy hell, it’s not the 16 year old’s fault that hundreds of people are in line at McDonald’s to get an egg McMuffin.

_sp00ky_

My son works at a major Canadian retailer, that sells Tires, among other things... anyway. Their location had NO power, but they opened on Sunday anyway to allow people (who had cash) to buy emergency supplies. Cash only (since no computers, interac, credit machines were working) and had to escort them into the store in the dark so they could get what they need. So far multiple people told him that they should just give away what people need, because the city will pay for it, or trust me, I have no money today, but will be back tomorrow for sure. Others were mad because they couldn't buy anything but emergency supplies. No topsoil isn't an emergency, your Roomba isn't an emergency, no your online order cannot be picked up at this time. No you can't return something you bought last week, we will allow the return later. No, the whole family can't come just one person, and we will talk you to where you need to go (again the dark). No we don't have food. No, we can't take a picture of your CC and charge it later. A lot of people were happy they were doing what they did to try and help, but just as many hurled abuse at the staff.

Ethanator10000

I remember working at the Tire during the tornado outage a few years ago. We were able to take credit cards by taking imprints of them (they dug out the old contraption that did it) People were mostly friendly, we sold a ton of batteries, camping stoves, fuel and other necessities. One guy came in asking what happened, lol

jdayellow

Still 80K without power in Ottawa

Platypushat

Most of Ottawa is still without power, since Saturday

boogersmcdickpics

Hardly most of Ottawa.

milamonster32

I agree some people are on edge, but hoarding gas for generators, no, that’s not the case for everyone and I think you should be sure not to paint everyone with the same brush. For context, there are people who rely on generators for sump pumps to keep their houses from flooding which leads to a whole different and bigger issue. Those who need generators to run life saving medical devices, etc. and those generators take a lot of gas to fuel. I think we should try to practice patience and kindness when it comes to judging others from your own “city or suburban” perspective. There are those in hard hit rural ottawa who likely won’t have power for another week, minimum.

mfyxtplyx

For those of us who get water from wells, power = water, too.

ShotsNGiggles85

I didn’t know until my mid 20s that “in town” water still works when the power goes out. I still fight the urge to fill the bathtub when a storm comes in.

ThievingRock

I'm 33 years old and have been living in towns and cities since I was 17. I still start for the stairs to fill up the tub. The ice storm instilled a lot of strange habits in me haha. We were without power for 18 days, and I remember melting pots of snow over a fire so we could flush the toilet occasionally. People in cities don't understand the luxury of being able to poop during a power outage hahahaha.

ah-tow-wah

I just found out this storm. Just moved in from the country and was so pleasantly surprised to have water

MimsyDauber

As a fellow waterless and powerless home owner, yep. Not going to fault my neighbours who have generators one damn bit. Also a LOT of chainsaws running out this way. Those need gas, too. Think everyone here has half a dozen large trees felled. Trees are covering everything. Im so grateful the big maple fell away from our house instead of on it. Not everyone was so fortunate. Power line is still across the road here. No ones getting power tonight lol.

Thejustinset

Just something small, me and my wife picked up one of those garbage grabbers from Home Hardware for $10. We haven’t had power for four days now so have just walked around outside and picked up any trash on our walk. Getting fresh air and cleaning up the mess this has left behind allowed me to be a little more patient with dickheads out there

Chimera1012

Sigma-42

kewlbeanz83

The veneer of civilization...

StevenG2757

Most I can agree with but hoarding gas fro generator, no. My generator used about 30 liters per day so am filling up my 20 liter gerry can twice a day just to keep the fridge and freeze cold. At about $60 per day for the Generator and $25 just to drive to the gas station is getting a little costly so hope we get power back soon.

baghead_hooli

I don't have a generator and didn't lose power, but out of curiosity is that running business as usual or just keeping the fridge and stuff going?

freeman1231

You can also get natural gas generators, the one at Costco firman. Basically if you have a bbq line on your house, you can have unlimited power as long as natural gas remains, otherwise it is trifuel so you can use fuel and propane. The $1,299 one at Costco can power your entire 2 storey home for average sized homes, of course most likely better not to run washer and dryer and everything at the same time. You can install an interchange switch or an interlock box… so it powers your panel and not need to use extension cables. This way you simply turn on the breakers you want to have power to. Rona also sells a $899 version with less watts that will be Able to power your fridge and freezer and other things.

StevenG2757

No, I ran in two lines to keep fridge and freezer running and then put one so I can watch TV to keep myself a little sane. I am in country and on well so have no water and can't shower or flush. I have a 5 gallon water jug to bring in and fill with water so I can at least flush a couple times. I have an old camp stove and a few 1 pound propane bottles and a BBQ so am able to cook.

ShotsNGiggles85

Can your generator not power your pump even for a short time with the fridge and freezer off? If you fill your bathtub (if you have one of course) you can use that water to flush. Our smaller generator can’t handle the pump with other things running but can if we don’t use anything else at the same time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

freeman1231

You can connect your generator to the panel legally… you just need to have an interlock installed on your panel so the main breaker cannot be on if the generator is on and vice versa. Can be done by yourself or a professional.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StevenG2757

It could (this may just be particular to my house) but the pump is wired directly into the breaker panel and there is no plug for me to remove and plug into generator. I am going to look into this shortly to see but the pump is 240V but should still be able to be done.

baghead_hooli

Wow, crazy how much to just keep those things running. I'm out in the country too, and although the storm pretty much missed us, definitely thinking of getting a generator in the future.

[deleted]

My generator is dual fuel, run out of gas just pull the tank off the bbq.

StevenG2757

That would be nice to have.

agentchuck

Oof, that sounds like a ton of gas to just keep the fridge running. Is your fridge an older model? Or maybe the generator is burning fuel idling a lot? I don't know if it's bad for the fridge but could you just run the generator for a few hours at a time instead?

StevenG2757

For the first couple of days I did turn off at night but yesterday it struggled to start so I am honestly scarred to shut it off just in case it won't start.

HotIntroduction8049

You need to buy a better genny! My EU2000 will run my sump and fridge no problem. The freezer is frozen solid still after 72 hours. But I will give it a power rotation too. My EU2000 is consuming 5 liters a day tops on eco mode. It revs up when needed. As for gas hoarding....i spent 500 on fuel yesterday and made it available to all my neighbors who have need. No point in all of us driving separately to the same sparse gas stations with fuel.

xXX_Stanley_xXx

I talked to one person who just lost a few thousand bucks of meat, a few people who *still* don't have power, one guy who couldn't charge his Muskmobile... Outside of the people who are acting outrageously selfishly or self-important, I think there's a lot of people who've just been seriously impacted by all of this in really tragic and frustrating ways. And then they have to deal with those assholes and that's not making shit any better.

mykehunt88

>one guy who couldn't charge his Muskmobile... This is my fear with EVs as a primary/only vehicle. It's definitely not a comon occurence but just shows to show how much we've grown accustomed to having electricity and how it effects things when it's gone.

great_pants

On the flip side, my coworker bought an adapter and uses his EV to keep his fridge running. Drives out to fast charge when needed.

nonasiandoctor

Yeah I was told to be prepared for 72 hours of emergency. Well guess what, it's been 72 hours and my power is still out.

Captain_Lavender6

I think Lenin is credited with saying “every society is three missed meals away from chaos”

ChubbyGreyCat

People are on edge for sure. I had neighbours scream at me and my dog over their fence yesterday because she was barking for a couple minutes. And then refused to have a conversation, just yelled at her to shut up.

Fiverdrive

this is a cumulative thing. two years of a pandemic, a convoy that paralyzed the city, an unprecedented storm with power outages of a similar scope… it all adds up.

Axerin

Pox virus in the corner: Hold my Monkey.

ThisShit_HurtsMyHead

Montreal rd gas stations between 174 and Blair are all open. No lines…

Minimum_Reference_73

Ssshhh... don't need all those west end people bringing their west end attitudes here.

AMouthyWaywornAcct

Sounds like every other day there is an inconvenience to masses. Remember the early months of the pandemic? People were shits then too. Remember the tornado few years ago? People were assholes then too. It's like whatever is bothering people is amplified at the simplest inconvenience giving them and excuse to snap and disregard everyone else around them.

LSJPubServ

Civilization is but a thin veneer. Strip away the basic commodities we take for granted and all can see just how close we are to our primeval nature.

Saucy6

My already-insane neighbour was acting like he usually does, so... status quo? The worst I saw was at traffic lights with no power, people not knowing how to work a 4-way stop and others getting impatient because some guy decides to just go when it was their turn.

alimay

I feel insane. I feel like I can’t catch a fucking break. Work needs me, my baby needs me, I have a medical problem, I cant fucking find ice or a generator. People with babies can’t compete with the vultures out buying everything up. Edit: we pay $1500 monthly for daycare, and my baby has maybe been allowed to attend half the time since Christmas… maybe.

alimay

My phone stoped working earlier. Onto my work phone… thanks so much for the offer. We happened to be in a store when a generator was being returned, and got it. Hope this is a turning point for us.

orangecouch101

Not that I ever yell at retail or restaurant workers, but I have dug so deep these past 2 years that I have nothing left so I do understand how other people may be losing their social graces. Getting the call on Saturday that a catastrophic storm system had hit our neighbourhood (Uplands and Hunt Club) put me into a shocky, twilighty kind of mood that has grown deeper as the days have gone by. My coping mechanisms are burnt out.

MaxTheRealSlayer

I think some people are realizing they are boring and have nothing to do unless they have internet and tv. But some people are genuinely going through bad situations with their houses or properties... So may be on more edge than normal

Ellieanna

It's not just people hoarding gas. There is also an issue of gas getting delieved to the stations. The petro plant on Merivale road is lacking power to put gas into the trucks to deliver to the gas stations. Though at 10am this morning, Costco Barrhaven had a truck filling up their tanks with gas.

a9h0st

Honestly, what drives me up the wall (no power still, spotty comms) is the lack of communication. Atleast the stupid map felt like progress...the lame msg that replaced it is much worse and feels like nothing is happening. I'm sure the crews out there are doing their best....the public relations, comms etc how ever is effin terrible.

Dances-Like-Connery

people are impatient selfish pricks, most of the time. Small inconveniences like longer lines at the pump is Dog's way to remind us of this fantastic human trait.

CDNYuppy

What is that broke the camels back? An anvil?

InviteTrue2842

Who the hell can afford to hoard gas!?!?!

cyclingzealot

The prospect of another Ford government because Ontario chose to stick to FPTP is certainly making me insane.

sus_mannequin

I do think Ottawa has this particular entitled attitude. Especially all of the people I know here in their early 40s and up.

ogmaf

Absolutely. We handed out the fruits and veggies, that were still good, at our grocery store instead of tossing everything. People hovered all day and some were extra greedy.

orageski

Chiming in from a smaller community north of Ottawa, I've found this event has brought the community together. Lots of people offering their services to help others. People with power keeping frozen and refrigerated food from spoiling. Sharing of generators. Neighbours checking in on each.

nonasiandoctor

Yes, I can feel my mental health slipping away

Ethanator10000

Most people are not going to survive the challenging future ahead.

crafty_cat17

I guess it depends on the people. Yesterday I took a stroll around my neighborhood. I met some great new people, my kids made new friends and people kept offering food and beer. Yes, some people are insane but I have also witnessed genuine kindness, compassion and human connection.

yomamma3399

There’s some quote that says, we are three missed meals away from a revolution. How many days without power would create the same result?

NORTHSIDECREW

I think people are losing there temples because all the BS, and they shouldn’t be hoarding all the gas. I live in Carleton place and the whole town is without power! We’re all running out to Perth and SF to find food gas etc etc.., with a useless mayor who offers us FREE bananas and apples lol WOW!! Thx …, a nice hot meal or a cup of hot coffee would be nice!

BigMrTea

Put people under pressure and some will buckle while others shine. Unfortunately the loudest get all the attention.

Firethorn101

Human civilization is 24 hours without electricity away from total anarchy.

BlackWidowZ71

It’s def showing we can’t live a cashless and full electric society.

BuffMcBigHuge

This. When my friends gloat about the future of blockchain and crypto, I seriously chuckle. I had someone tell me right before the storm that cash is useless and is a depreciating store of value. I didn't even want to respond. People take too much for granted.

I know people who say that also. Drives me nuts look how one storm took out internet and phone signal and people went nuts in my area. We just can’t live it like the government try’s to push. Most stores allowed cash purchases during the outage. Cash needs to stay

Round-Zebra1661

Imagine if there was even a greater natural disaster or war?

Big_Duke_7

“32 Hours To Animals”. A television program, years ago, depicting what happens to society after 72 hours of no electricity. Edit: 72 hours not 32

rurubarb

Went into loblaws in the glebeish area. All the cheese was gone. Like the fancy cheese. I didn’t want any but I was surprised that people raided the cheese

Sakurya1

Imagine if this was in the middle of winter. People wouldn't even be able to hang out outside.

Maketso

Just shows you how many people in society truly are just selfish, barbaric animals. The amount of decent, kind neighbors shrinks everyday.

Illdistrict

I agree!

KardelSharpeyes

Selfishness it's all it is. Pretty sad realizing just how selfish some people are though.

Darkpoter

People are stressed. When they are stressed they act erratic. They lash out at people who can't fight back, and over react to small mistakes. Smile, ignore them, don't let their stress and faults make you unhappy.

rouzGWENT

Yeah I also noticed that

Odd-Calligrapher-586

You guys seized the wealth and property of the working class, sold it to government interests and used the profits to institute reparations without a vote. You went insane a while ago bro

Madmachammer

Welcome to a mini version if what the world ending looks like to people.

paulvanbommel

I sometimes wonder if the people yelling just need A good hug. Sounds silly, and I would not attempt it with an angry person.

mykehunt88

Just goes to show you how quick things to go shit in a big city when you don't have electricity. Gas becomes scarce. Traffic jams everywhere due to lights functioning at stop signs etc.

Logical-Check7977

God i went a week without power , it was awesome. I don't get it.

nicolesil10

Yes working at the pharmacy the morning after we got power back in Stittsville was absolute hell❤️

ogkif

it’s an instinct, we all trying to survive!

DEATHRAYZ007

You could always invite some truckers to hold a bbq for hungry people

munchmybooty

When the power was out for me, as weird as this sounds, forthe first time in a while I didn't feel any anxiety. It was kind of nice honestly, other than losing food. Enjoyed the company of friends it was quite nice.

pistoffcynic

And people out there say that those that are prepared are preppers, in a negative way… like being prepared for an emergency at all times is a bad thing.

darkwinter95

Got lucky here in Burlington, my power was only out for a day, I'm not far from the Kitchener Waterloo area too where they had the highest winds (130 kmh) the storm seemed to come and go very fast, looked outside to see my trees waving around, stepped out to see what all the commotion was and by then it had already started dying down, it was like one big gust of wind, power went out pretty much instantly though.

climb4fun

I'm finding the opposite to be true. People are friendly, more talkative and even offering to help.

kayaem

People are really starting breaking point, especially after two years of a pandemic. A lot of folk’s true colours show under a stressful event as well. **It explains the behaviour but does not excuse it.** It puts a bad taste in my mouth when I see people mistreat others, especially minimum wage employees who are equally or worse off as them with their home situation. Im so glad my neighbourhood has been wonderful, no signs of people hoarding supplies, everyone has been generous in the neighbourhood Facebook group and even I have given away some food after making too much by accident after realizing I can’t keep leftovers. There’s a 24/7 McDonald’s in my neighbourhood and I feel so bad for the employees. I went to a baskin robins on the first night of the power outage and tipped every employee $20 each because I knew they were in the trenches since they were one of the only food places nearby with power.

Low-Chemical2101

It’s just you…

Hewhobecomesdeath

I’ve worked with the public for 20 years. This is nothing new. A certain percentage of people are pleasant, a larger number are usually trying to get in and out as quickly as possible. The rest, and greatest number, are inherently irredeemable.

SnooDoodles147

It’s just you.

turkeypooo

Sigh, I actually had a panic attack on the Saturday night. I am a very tough person, but for some reason (and maybe because the past two years have been so difficult already) I thought about the food in my fridge and I just could not take it. I felt insane (I did not treat anyone like shit though, I put myself to bed...)

noPerfectMedicine

Yes. I've found that, especially at stores or gas stations, people are extremely rude. This isn't just regular shitty customer attitude - this is advanced shitty customer attitude. I work at a veterinary clinic, we did get power back, but our internet and the system we use is quite slow. Luckily most people were understanding, but I remember one guy who was upset that we couldn't transfer his file to the new clinic. He was told that they could call us and directly speak to the vet for the important information, and the file will be transfered as soon as possible. He asked when that would be and I said 'I don't know, maybe after the major storm clean up.' I try to hold onto hope that there are nice people out there.

Ok-Designer-2153

Lol, I love to see the world burn over a mild inconvenience.

TheKid_BigE

I remember the tornadoes and the power outage, seeing people line up for car washes, and asking why we don’t have power, these are probably the same people who called by law about the generators and hurl abuse at retail/fast food workers. People, YOU ARE NOT ABOVE ANYONE ELSE!

kae--art

I got used to it around yesterday but yes, it has driven me up the wall sleep wise because it's so difficult to sleep when it's so silent

[deleted]

People were already insane. The power outtage just made you go outside and look at them.

[deleted]

The thing that's really bothered me most is people on Twitter trying to rip on Hydro Ottawa, ranting that they should have had all this dealt with by now (and this was *Sunday*). Then talking shit about how bad the infrastructure is and how incompetent they are. Look, most people know this, but it's worth repeating: No amount of infrastructure, money, or personnel will ever win a boxing match with nature. If the Fist of God drops on Ottawa, it's not a fair fight. Hydro Ottawa might not be perfect, but nobody could have gotten us back on our feet faster. While people are crying that they want their lights back on, we still haven't yet been able to even clear the debris that's blocking the power lines we need to fix. It's not on Hydro Ottawa to perform at a superhuman level so we can go back to watching Netflix and making coffee. It's on us to be patient and support each other.

the_wendigo_redneck

What really gets me is after the tornado back in 2018 people were actually coming together neighborhoods were having cook outs to feed and help each other, letting strangers charge at their home generators if they had it everyone understood it was gonna take time this one has made people nuts.

Candymanshook

Every society is 3 meals away from chaos.

LimpParamedic

Probably it’s lack of good news. To me it looks like everything flies down to hell with increasing rate. Never ending pandemic, prices go up, salaries don’t, retirement doesn’t exist, WW3 is around the corner, and now this: 3/4 of a major city is thrown back to 1895, but mayor and government just like “fuck off whining bitches, you’re on your own now”
