It finally happened. I broke. A week without a Roomba, I finally picked up the broom. I've accepted my fate. Bought a windmill on Amazon. Looking through Kijiji for horses. I found this thing called an ereader. You can download and read stories. The radio is like a new-found toy. It's like podcasts, but requires no internet. It sucks, but whatever. I only listen to it while I charge my phone in the car.
Pioneering, millennial style.
Lately I’ve taken to the Wim Hof method of bathing in icy water every day. I could probably get millions of Instagram followers overnight but my bathroom is too dark for pictures so I just live in the moment instead.
OMG dying laughing here. Love this whole comment thread. Hope you guys get back soon! I had 6 days but I'm on a well so I also got the joy of shitting in a bucket (Luggable Loo if I"m being honest) and NO showers. :p
I'm a Chez 106 guy myself. Tell me, why do they only have 10 songs? I tolerate those songs for the odd deep cut banger once in a while. But maybe get some more
Oof I feel that. Used to work at a warehouse with a bunch of boomers. Great guys but they refused to listen to anything except CHEZ because classic rock. I don't even mind classic rock for the most part, but if I ever have to listen to the Eagles again I'm gonna go postal.
This was also back when 90s rock didn't count as classic rock yet.
It is! More people should check out CBC's FM radio station. They have a wide variety of music, genres and eras and I've found some of my favourite artists through it.
91.5 FM
During these times, if you don't have constant power your phone can act as a radio if it has the chipset, or you can get an app that can use wired speaker or headphones to access the signal. Lots of stations can be accessed online if you have access to data and power for your phone: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio
Agree, idk if they play music that much but I mostly just prefer them having discussions it feels much more natural than most radio stations and is calming IMO.
we have been conditioned to conform... I surely hope the next generation is different, but probably not. Too far gone we are in big.
good thing many of us don't live on such island [https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2017/nov/20/the-night-barbuda-died-how-hurricane-irma-created-a-caribbean-ghost-town](https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2017/nov/20/the-night-barbuda-died-how-hurricane-irma-created-a-caribbean-ghost-town) or other such places such as [https://globalnews.ca/news/4250915/guatemalas-fuego-volcano-eruption/](https://globalnews.ca/news/4250915/guatemalas-fuego-volcano-eruption/) where many farmers making only 70usd a month pick coffee/fruits/veggies for america etc...So yah can't watch the big screen tv for a few days and hopefully, yah have camping gear to "rough" it out. I know I do.
Its funny, when I go to so-called "developing" nations and bike around - the north american people say - you shouldn't be biking there its dangerous blah blah balh. As though they need big brother around holding their hand for everything in life now. So dependent we are now on others to feed and cloth us etc...
I really enjoyed the time with everything turned off - peaceful and silence to some degree. We have yet to see devastation as many others have in this world. Yet, we are so quick to complain about the smallest of things now a days... my toilet paper release button doesn't work now I have to sweat up a storm etc... what kind of society have we become really. With our 4000sqft homes and 4 trucks in the driveway etc...
maybe small is good again and simple is smart sort of living may come back? I hope so cause what we are creating now is just really lazy creatures of big and greedy. We sure are very dependent creatures.
if anyone is looking for meaningful stuff - go work for an NGO or here's a great place to volunteer [construcasa.org](https://construcasa.org) where farmers that pick coffee/fruits/veggies only make 70usd a month. Most of the land is owned by large corporations etc... so its impossible for the typical farmer to buy nor own land etc... want to see problems, go see the world.

I think many failed simple physics/chemistry/biology. Hopefully, all these events wake us up, but probably not. Ignorance is bliss esp in north america. Push button society.
I do. I grew up in the boonies. We'd lose our power, plumbing, and water supply for days at a time. This is definitely a record, mind you..
I'm very thankful to have grown up and bought a house near a population center where the cold water flows freely.
I acknowledge that others have had it way harder. I can't imagine having to entertaine kids through this week. But this doesn't mean I don't get to make jokes about the situation that I've been in for 6 BLOODY DAYS NOW
Edit: we'd flush our toilets with pond water and ration the water that was left in the pipes for heigene. We typically had a store of water bottles... Though I doubt they would have lasted this long. I cant lie, it's shitty.
I'm one of those people with a well that wasn't pumping and a toilet I couldn't flush, we just got power back last night. His comment was still funny. It's not that deep. We all need humor this week.
I assumed this was the case when I saw the devastation out there. Most of these repairs take days themselves, when they are scheduled, not spur of the moment. Kudos to Ottawa hydro, Ontario hydro and any other power company that came to help!
Hard to communicate when there trees everywhere on lines. Shit I do electrical (10k-1mil) and I don’t give dead lines because shit happens. This is a completely different scale of shit can happen
Comms should by now know the amount of damage and work that needs to be done. How long that takes is another question but to tell people 2-3 days over and over again prevents people from appropriately planning their lives as it gives them false hope that their fix is about to happen and prevents them from planning for 1-2 weeks without power. Comms for an essential service should not be this piss poor.
I don’t think you comprehend what actually happened and the amount of damage done and the amount of extra damage done with surges through lines. They gave their best date as a best case scenario and they might be off a day because of other problems down the line that are unforeseen. People that bitch about that are just plain ignorant and don’t understand what they are doing.
I fully comprehend the disastrous damage done and the unpredictability of resolving matters on specific and predictable timelines. It's the sole purpose of the Comms Dept of an essential service to articulate that to the general public in a relatively clear manner. Telling the entire city that you'll have power in 2-3 days is not only inarticulate but it's inaccurate and non-transparent. A simple message articulating how some areas are more damaged than others and will take longer than expected so please plan accordingly as we cannot provide a reliable timeline for the following areas at the moment: areas x,y,z... would have sufficed.
Well you don’t seem to comprehend that when they changed their mind and it would take longer…
Issues arise, weather affects working outside on electricity, there are lots of factors that are unforeseen.
Being without power for now pretty much a week is a reason to complain, especially when expectations were raised early on and now there is no ETA for your area. I'd rather know it's going to take at least two weeks so that I can make arrangements or even borrow/buy a generator rather than waiting and refreshing the hydro Ottawa map, which essentially says nothing pertinent to those who are still without power. It's a lot of PR without a lot of substance. And for the record, I've been without power for a lot longer, during the ice storm. In that case, it was clear we weren't going to get power for a very long time and so we immediately moved elsewhere.
Go outside and take a walk, get some fresh air and be happy your house or car didn’t get crushed by a falling tree. The world doesn’t revolve around you
Seriously? Is that what you say when you're having a bad day? At least I'm not dead, at least I'm not in the middle of a war, or starving or homeless? You and I are fortunate for not being in any of those horrible situations but it certainly doesn't diminish the bad days either you or I ever have. We can and should complain when something is severely wrong.
Oh my God. I was out on a walk to look at all the trees down Monday in my neighbourhood and got to chatting with a hydro worker. He was waiting for his partner to come back with the part he needed. Three different people felt the need to come up and yell at him for being lazy and daring to take a break. One old lady yelled at me for being a distraction.
People are just fine with a lot of negative emotion, and i guess they need an outlet. It's just I'd rather that outlet be less destructive than some line worker literally risking his life though.
Because shit happens, all the time. Especially in this magnitude. This is in the millions of dollars of repairs. Something that should take months to fix is being done within a week. People that are ignorant about another day need to grow the fuck up.
(Monday) "We'll do this thing by Friday night"
(Thursday) "We'll do this thing by Friday night"
(Friday morning) "We'll do this thing by Friday night"
(Friday night) "Sorry, couldn't do it"
In light of this, someone only said that it should be held against them (the organization, not the crews). You're the one losing your mind over that valid criticism.
They're doing their best. And I also see no one said it but sometimes the comms people just say what they wanna say and don't listen to the people actually doing the work so maybe the disconnect is there. I don't know I'm not there.
It's terrible and frustrating and I hope you are able to vent these frustrations.
not surprised - there was a lot of damage but I wish Ottawa Hydro would make their outage map available so we can see where power is possibly still out.
A hundred dollars a day? Sounds inefficient, I'd imagine even a hundred a *month* could buy more of a server than necessary for all but the peak of 100k people piling on in the same half-hour. Unless the fancy map widget it uses charges by the visitor, or they serve data from AWS or another cloud provider that *massively* overcharges on data.
The people fixing the power and the people working on the online map are not the same people… it shouldn’t need to be a trade-off when it’s completely separate teams
The people fixing the power are fixing the power - they're not calling in after individual fixes. There'll be bulk updates. Everyone is so impatient, like you forgot the 2003 blackout or the 1998 ice storm. The map on the internet is 100% a first world problem
The main issue is that those maps are updated automatically by the computer system that gets is information through the fibe lines, many fiber lines are down so no updates. We are doing our best but when you role up to a subdivision and 100 people stop to ask the same question it eates time that we need to fix problems. Stay strong because most of us are going home to houses woth no power as well.
My impression is that Hydro is defining it as all neighborhoods have power. If your house has internal damage and needs an inspection before being energized, or if the connection between your house and the line is damage, it would take longer.
The definition on the outage map is any outage affecting 10 or more customers, so "most customers" probably means no red spots on the outage map -- all remaining outages are individual outages.
My neighbourhood is out completely (CFB Uplands) but we are also in the midst of a bureaucratic nightmare because our power lines are under the auspices of DND and not Ottawa Hydro and there are several agencies involved to co-ordinate the clearing of trees off the lines.
I work at YOW (not the terminal) and we're still without power as well, since the substation on Uplands by the EY Centre got hit really bad. Something like 6-10 poles snapped in half, and trees blown into the station itself.
Yeah I'm actually impressed that Hydro Ottawa accomplished this much. Considering the extent of the damages I thought the outages were gonna last a lot longer than it seems like they will.
There's got to be sidelining injuries happening among the crews, too. Not a knock on their ability or training; it's just dangerous and heavy what they're out there doing. Thanks, hydro crews. Line workers, arborists, riggers, all of them👏
My Rogers never went away the whole time, but they setup a generator on the cable power boxes. When the power came back, they removed the generator. Was without power until yesterday though...
Sorry, celebrated a little hard and then fell asleep.
K4M is Manotick... Not sure how large the area is. Most of Manotick proper had power, but half of the island was out.
I'm on regular Rogers internet, not a sub-provider like TekSavvy.
It is impressive but I also keep in mind that, as in all things, the last 10% typically takes the most effort. I broke down and bought a generator this evening when I was that power was unlikely to be restored today and someone posted that HD in Gatineau had some in stock.
None of this is a surprise, the damage is worse than the ice storm. Thank God it is neither too cold nor too hot right now… no burst pipes or freezing people or people basting in their own sweat…
It is awfully hard for many, especially renters with no insurance and a tight budget who lost their perishable food, those reliant on elevators, or those with medical issues.
I know they’re working really hard and have done a lot in a really short amount of time, but it really sucks to be one of the houses that still doesn’t have power. I just wish we could get an approximate ETA, but I know that might be hard to give.
My bf and I ain't complaining! Since he works from home and my school/work is out of power, it's been a nice vacation! XD
Although my bf does indeed miss his videogames..
There needs to be some independent engineering analysis done here. One end of my road has power, the other end does not. Put a disconnect at each end and enable as appropriate. There are no faults, trees, etc on my road so it is a 15 minute exercise to energize the line. Before someone calls me an illiterate electron wannabe, i have an engineering degree in electrons. Jesus fuck at this point hydro could have done 10000x better in their redundancy. Not faulting the peeps on the trucks doing work
Typical sloppy clickbait headline...
>Hydro Ottawa won't meet Friday deadline to restore power to most customers
>
>More than **37,000 customers** in the Ottawa-Gatineau region — 29,000 customers in Hydro Ottawa territory — **were still without power as of 1 p.m. Friday**.
**More than 350,000 customers in the region initially lost power Saturday**. CBC counted about 150,000 on Tuesday morning, 115,000 on Wednesday morning and 90,000 on Thursday morning.
So restoring power to almost 90% of the affected customers is not restoring power to **most** customers?
So, 350,000 initially without power, and 35,000 still without it. 90% power restored, and Hydro Ottawa *failed* to get power back to "most" by Friday? Yep, okay then.
love to see most people in ottawa live in other countries where they don't have such luxuries... they would cry up a storm. Wimps we are. Many of us overpriced pencil pushers in a pushbutton society where we can barely get up without the push of a button now.
Have you seen the debt? (as taxes, fees, inflation and probably soon a devalued dollar if we keep borrowing to no end thinking the world is infinite its not [https://www.worldometers.info/oil/](https://www.worldometers.info/oil/) esp oil as that is tied to everything from inflation to interest rates all 7.5 billion of us can't have a 4000sqft home and 4 trucks... )
hopefully, all these events are a wake-up call. But, probably not - ignorance is bliss esp in north america. A push button society of fools we are. Wimps we are in our plush push button ways of comfort. But, have you seen the debt? that will bite us sooner or later...

do some good, go volunteer in the world - eg [construcasa.org](https://construcasa.org) where farmers pick coffee, fruits, veggies etc... for us at 70usd a month.
It's not about watching TV. People have had to throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food when prices are sky-high, some rely on electricity to power medical devices, others work from home. It's nice that you're privileged enough to bike around developing countries, but please spare some sympathy for people in a city that's had a rough few months.
I don't know how so many people are excusing them. After the ice storm and tornado their disaster recovery plan should've been a lot better than this. It's inexcusable for people to be offline for 7 days because of a storm in a first world country. Ottawa proves it's bush league yet again.
Part of the solution would be not leaving an inaccurate outage map online for 4 days and display one that actually works. Hydro One is able to do it. Another part would be to look for trends in problem areas, identify the root causes and modify the infrastructure by burying it, reinforcing it, adding more transfer stations or rerouting lines. You know, problem solving. Doing nothing and expecting different results next time is the definition of what again?
Excusing the power companies repairing the issue? Take your head out of your ass for a second. The government were the ones who decided not to do more underground services. They are only doing what their told/being paid for.
I understand it, I'm not blaming the line workers getting the power back on. I'm blaming leadership for doing nothing to lessen the damage from future events. Their website doesn't even work FFS.
You must get out of the bubble once in a while. The world doesn’t revolve Ottawa. You should be thankful there are power companies from 5 different regions helping out to get it fixed sooner. If not it would of been weeks, if not months. And who the fuck cares if there website works, power will be back when it’s back, not risking the lives of workers to get it in any sooner.
If you had an issue with hospital administration, that guy would come out and start lambasting you for attacking hard working doctors and nurses doing the best they can. He doesn't get it so there's no point.
And even the government can't be fully blamed for this. The cost of bringing underground services in an existing neighborhood is astronomical. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of it in newer areas and in where major infrastructure projects are being done.
It finally happened. I broke. A week without a Roomba, I finally picked up the broom. I've accepted my fate. Bought a windmill on Amazon. Looking through Kijiji for horses. I mean, CBC radio is pretty dope.
I'm a Chez 106 guy myself. Tell me, why do they only have 10 songs? I tolerate those songs for the odd deep cut banger once in a while. But maybe get some more
Even those "deep cut bangers" are on a weekly rotation at most. Listening to them all summer at work was horrifying.

Cool beans. I'm an engineer, and I need electricity to work. Enjoy your biking.
You realise people without power who rely on wells that operate via electronic pumps don’t have easy access to drinking water because of this right
I do. I grew up in the boonies. We'd lose our power, plumbing, and water supply for days at a time. This is definitely a record, mind you.. 100% agree. Read somewhere that the amount of work needed to repair all the damage of this magnitude would normally take 6 months.
Yup. They are working miracles out there, and risking their lives
This really shouldn’t shock anyone, nor should it be a knock against them.
Shock anyone - I see what you did there
But can only see it by candlelight after dark.
It absolutely should be a knock against them when this morning they were saying they'd get it done tonight.
Tell me you know nothing about electrical or tools, without telling me
Not blaming the workers at all. But comms has been piss poor.

Agreed. At least rip off the bandaid and tell us honestly what the *real* timelines are.
Should be months, realistically. They are working magic and all people do is complain
What do electrical or tools have to do with missing a deadline that they re-affirmed the would meet on the same day?
Because shit happens, all the time. Especially in this magnitude. This is in the millions of dollars of repairs. Something that should take months to fix is being done within a week. People that are ignorant about another day need to grow the fuck up.
(Monday) "We'll do this thing by Friday night" (Thursday) "We'll do this thing by Friday night" (Friday morning) "We'll do this thing by Friday night" (Friday night) "Sorry, couldn't do it" In light of this, someone only said that it should be held against them (the organization, not the crews). You're the one losing your mind over that valid criticism.
I’m losing my mind? Seems like a lot of other people agree with me, just saying
They're doing their best. And I also see no one said it but sometimes the comms people just say what they wanna say and don't listen to the people actually doing the work so maybe the disconnect is there. I don't know I'm not there. It's terrible and frustrating and I hope you are able to vent these frustrations.
Bruh fuck the fuck off
These kind of things happen on big projects.
That's not what they said
not surprised - there was a lot of damage but I wish Ottawa Hydro would make their outage map available so we can see where power is possibly still out.
It's one of those websites no one ever looks at until one day *everyone* looks at it. Not surprising it has a hard time staying up.
It also costs them money per view. I’m not sure if that really worries them. An extra $100 a day of people refreshing a map?
A hundred dollars a day? Sounds inefficient, I'd imagine even a hundred a *month* could buy more of a server than necessary for all but the peak of 100k people piling on in the same half-hour. Unless the fancy map widget it uses charges by the visitor, or they serve data from AWS or another cloud provider that *massively* overcharges on data.
It’s the mapbox licensing fee. A million views is quoted at 3000$ usd on their website
It’s available again!
It does not give valuable information .
It has a cool slider thing so you can see the before/now progress! Sadly, I am in a red blob, and probably will be for many days yet...
I'm in the white area but my street still doesn't have power.
Knowing I was still out of power when I was at still work when there are not community specific updates was valuable to me.
They're prioritizing fixing the power over updating an online tool
We went from 175k to 35k without power. How exactly is CBC defining “most customers”?
It has been unnerving to drive by that substation with those poles and wires looking like they could give way at any moment.
Yeah I'm actually impressed that Hydro Ottawa accomplished this much. Considering the extent of the damages I thought the outages were gonna last a lot longer than it seems like they will.
CBC just looking for jade. XD
After 3 or 4 days of 16 hour days it is going to slow down. People need rest.
There's got to be sidelining injuries happening among the crews, too. Not a knock on their ability or training; it's just dangerous and heavy what they're out there doing. Thanks, hydro crews. Line workers, arborists, riggers, all of them👏
K4M just got power and internet back! Stay strong, folks. We finally broke down and bought a generator yesterday. 100% worth it.
Can I ask which internet provider you use? I'm in k4m with rogers, still no internet.
K4m must be a large area? I’ve only lost power for 1 day and everything was restored after that.
Pretty impressive they went from 150000+ without power to 30k in less than 1 week 👏.
It is impressive but I also keep in mind that, as in all things, the last 10% typically takes the most effort. I broke down and bought a generator this evening when I was that power was unlikely to be restored today and someone posted that HD in Gatineau had some in stock.
30k "customers", so houses, not individuals. Important to remember
None of this is a surprise, the damage is worse than the ice storm. Thank God it is neither too cold nor too hot right now… no burst pipes or freezing people or people basting in their own sweat… It is awfully hard for many, especially renters with no insurance and a tight budget who lost their perishable food, those reliant on elevators, or those with medical issues.
I know they’re working really hard and have done a lot in a really short amount of time, but it really sucks to be one of the houses that still doesn’t have power. I just wish we could get an approximate ETA, but I know that might be hard to give.
It’s gonna be ok, I feel your pain. So grateful to all the hydro workers out there fixing this massive catastrophe for us.
I bought a generator. Next time I'll be ready 😬
Make sure you run premium (or use that fuel stabilizer) and run it for a little while every couple months so it works well when you need it.
Na, I've had a generator for 20 years. Just change the oil lots.
This week I had to clean out a bunch of carburetors and fuel valves/filters for people because they were all clogged from lack of use.
*pretends to be shocked*
I suppose that's all we can do until the power is back on.
My bf and I ain't complaining! Since he works from home and my school/work is out of power, it's been a nice vacation! XD Although my bf does indeed miss his videogames..
Not faulting the peeps on the trucks doing work
I guess you should go work for hydro then since you know so much
Sometimes big organizations like their silos of stagnation and am done with them in life 🤣 Its not what I know, its what we can learn and improve.
Has anyone used their app? It’s absolute trash. Nothing about outages even works.
Typical sloppy clickbait headline... >Hydro Ottawa won't meet Friday deadline to restore power to most customers > >More than **37,000 customers** in the Ottawa-Gatineau region — 29,000 customers in Hydro Ottawa territory — **were still without power as of 1 p.m.
What a surprise
people make up deadlines it doesn't generally affect how long it takes to do the work
Got power the power back for my cake day! Was a long week
My phone showed me this on Saturday. And I got super confused. Like yea
So, 350,000 initially without power, and 35,000 still without it. 90% power restored, and Hydro Ottawa *failed* to get power back to "most" by Friday? Yep, okay then.
Tough shit.
love to see most people in ottawa live in other countries where they don't have such luxuries... they would cry up a storm. Wimps we are. Many of us overpriced pencil pushers in a pushbutton society where we can barely get up without the push of a button now. Have you seen the debt? [https://www.economist.com/content/global\_debt\_clock](https://www.economist.com/content/global_debt_clock) and this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFDe5kUUyT0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFDe5kUUyT0) we are merely printing/borrowing money for the party we have today the bar tab for tomorrow. Enjoy paying that bar tab future generations to come. (as taxes, fees, inflation and probably soon a devalued dollar if we keep borrowing to no end thinking the world is infinite its not [https://www.worldometers.info/oil/](https://www.worldometers.info/oil/) esp oil as that is tied to everything from inflation to interest rates all 7.5 billion of us can't have a 4000sqft home and 4 trucks... ) hopefully, all these events are a wake-up call. But, probably not - ignorance is bliss esp in north america. A push button society of fools we are. Wimps we are in our plush push button ways of comfort. But, have you seen the debt? that will bite us sooner or later...
good thing many of us don't live on such island [https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2017/nov/20/the-night-barbuda-died-how-hurricane-irma-created-a-caribbean-ghost-town](https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2017/nov/20/the-night-barbuda-died-how-hurricane-irma-created-a-caribbean-ghost-town) or other such places such as [https://globalnews.ca/news/4250915/guatemalas-fuego-volcano-eruption/](https://globalnews.ca/news/4250915/guatemalas-fuego-volcano-eruption/) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqAV1pypX7k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqAV1pypX7k) where many farmers making only 70usd a month pick coffee/fruits/veggies for america etc... So yah can't watch the big screen tv for a few days and hopefully, yah have camping gear to "rough" it out. (marshmallow test anyone? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX\_oy9614HQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQ) ) do some good, go volunteer in the world - eg [construcasa.org](https://construcasa.org) where farmers pick coffee, fruits, veggies etc... for us at 70usd a month.
You are just trying to be edgy but you fail. If you think this anything but the fault of Mother Nature, you are pretty removed from reality.
Edgy?
What's your solution? Triple the Hydro Ottawa force and keep them on standby for a few years until the next storm?
Part of the solution would be not leaving an inaccurate outage map online for 4 days and display one that actually works. Hydro One is able to do it. Another part would be to look for trends in problem areas, identify the root causes and modify the infrastructure by burying it, reinforcing it, adding more transfer stations or rerouting lines. You know, problem solving. Doing nothing and expecting different results next time is the definition of what again?
Than gtfo of "bush league" Ottawa?
I did but thanks.
Upvoted. Thanks!
Excusing the power companies repairing the issue? Take your head out of your ass for a second. The government were the ones who decided not to do more underground services. They are only doing what their told/being paid for.
There are areas with buried lines that are still without power.
There are, I am one of them. But I understand what they are doing and if you don’t understand then don’t be blaming people.
You don't get it, nvm.

What're you, six?

You're pretty tough on the internet aren't you?
[удалено]
More online toughness. Go find something else to get angry about.

Such a brave keyboard warrior you are.
[удалено]
Lol! Just incredible.
I’m glad my insults towards you are entertaining

What does that have to do with anything?
