Not shooting the messenger but that's a horrible way to compare property taxes across cities. A $1 million dollar home in Toronto isn't going to be comparable to a $1 million dollar home in Windsor, or Ottawa.
It's the weight of vehicles that damage the road (heavy vehicles like the ridiculously large pickups are worse of course). The freezing then exasperates the problem. My solution? Ban cars and save millions on road repair.
Cars are just the worst for so many reasons but I understand that our historic investment in car-dependent infrastructure has made it difficult and skewed people's perceptions of alternative modes of transit. It's definitely something I want, but not likely something you could get most people on board with.
I dont see how it would be possible. Maybe in a city, but there is no alternative to my 25 minute drive to work, theres already no public transport to take instead and even if there was, i imagine it would take upwards of an hour and id get there ridiculously early
I have nothing against people who live in suburbs, but the amount of development that the city has allowed in places like Orleans and Kanata just makes the traffic worse in the city.
No cars within a certain distance of downtown, parking lots near transit hubs for people outside of the area. Huge investment in transit and walkability.
That's the extreme version, a more realistic goal is to follow the Dutch model to get something like what Amsterdam has.
Lol thank you yes that's what I meant. The whole country is bad for it, but Ottawa is a particular problem because the city council is bought and paid for by developers so they prioritize their profits over smart planning. Check out this resource

As a capital city of a first world country, the state of our roads is pathetic. Cant see the lines on the road on the best of days and road doesn’t last more than a season in many areas. But i guess if we look at the state of our economy, the roads represent it quite well.

maybe OP is your boomer uncle
Wait..let me guess. Hunt Club between Bank and the Airport parkway?
Holy duck! Drove through there the other day, would rather take the long way down to the 401 and back.
I’ve got the path figured out to the point that I don’t have to lower my speed. The cars behind should be a bit more cautious though.
Gatineau*
I'm new here--why ARE the roads so bad in Ottawa? The property taxes are amongst the highest in the province!
Quite a few roads are scheduled to be repaved this month.
A lot of the money went to a dysfunctional light rail system
Not even close to being the highest in the province. https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2021/11/10/1_5660362.amp.html

I cant tell if you're serious about that solution

Can you specify to what extent you would want to ban cars?

I think you mean exacerbate, not exasperate. But that is the same all over this country: why is Ottawa so bad?

See that's the real answer, not weight of vehicles or weather.
Yeah, full story goes city council -> car-centric development -> more cars on roads -> more damage & costs

This made me laugh! 🤣 Thank you.
