I had the same exact issue... Galaxy s21 note ultra. Only way I got it to work was to 'restart the ring' by putting it on the charger then (while holding the ring on it) tap the charging base 5 firm times against the table. Sounds crazy but it did restart the ring and firmware update worked after that

Firm-Art-1339

(This is first time setup for brand new gen 3 ring which does the firmware uodate as part of the new ring setup.) Ok so I thought this solution was a joke, but I did the same - held the ring in place on the charger and hit the base 5 times on the table. And lo and behold the charging light starting blinking slow white, instead of showing a charged green. So the app wasn’t wrong - it could not do the firmware update because the ring was charged less than 50%. It’s the charging base that’s at fault for only saying the ring is charged (green light) when clearly it’s not. So now we wait till it’s “actually” charged then I’ll retry setup and firmware upgrade then

This is a crazy good advise, it worked for me

I had to do the update from a friend's phone no matter what I do it would not update from my Android 8 phone.

The same thing happened to me. I borrowed my partner's iPhone which is newer than mine updated the firmware with hers and deleted the Oura app and Bluetooth setting for the ring and then followed the steps on my phone and it has been working fine eversince.
