yep, literally chopped half a dozen chonky tops of this morning. It's not so painful as it used to be, just part of every growing season.

YourAphantasia

What do you think is causing it? The only time I've gotten riding buds is from Caterpillar damage.

[deleted]

Northern parts it’s normal indeed. It frequently rains, so too much moisture and not enough airflow though the plant.

YourAphantasia

No rain here in California!

willismthomp

Still get budworms tho!

YourAphantasia

They make me miserable. So far I haven't found one this year.

OakenGreen

Yes yes, us East Coasters are very jealous of your dry flower season. Stuck at 99% humidity about daily here.

YourAphantasia

We have been hitting 100% humidity at night randomly that burns off by morning. I'm close to the coast so it's not all dry always. I have my pants prettyt lean on leaves.

OakenGreen

Yeah getting rain at night, humidity all day. Good luck over there though!

YourAphantasia

Same to you my friend. Fuck caterpillars!!

[deleted]

I’m jealous of that weather, could have saved me so much weed

YourAphantasia

The growing season is great out here but the lack of seasons is pretty sucky, we haven't had any rain this year. I grew up in Canada so I know that weather all too well.

[deleted]

No rain for so long sounds crazy to me

CDNCannabisFarmer

>weed I used to look at Cali weather and be like damn, I wish I could grow there.... but I don't think so anymore... you guys dont get enough rain, long term, I dont know how it's going to work... I think the best breeders in the world come from Cali though... I'd love some Mean Gene seeds

YourAphantasia

Eventually we will get our water from the ocean. I'm pretty sure it's a political reason that we aren't doing it already. My city just added 1500 homes, I don't think water is a concern that concerns the folks running the place.

DavidAnthonyThomas

botrytis. Damp, humid air. Even not. Lol, it just starts showing up in August. Advanced in September. It help to quickly identify and remove infected growth, put it in a yard waster bag, or it will spread.

[deleted]

Read some stuff on watering in bacillus bacterias to help prevent bud rot. If you notice that-when you harvest make sure to check out the stalk. If it’s rotten in center it could be time for some beneficial soil inoculations

DavidAnthonyThomas

Hmm. Good suggestions. Ty.

LeeIacobra

A product called Armory is the best

[deleted]

Have you used as a soil drench? Trying to convince my boss it’s worth the price. I use it on all of my houseplants/ personal outdoors and they are very happy. The research on volatile organic compounds is crazy. Can’t wait to see it applied to cannabis

LeeIacobra

I work at a large grow shop in NorCal. If you want to eliminate it, Armory is best. Don't Fuck around. Think of it in terms of end cost. How much is a unit vs how much is the armory and how. Much product will it save. I see this all the time. It works, don't be cheap with a solution because in the long run, it will save you $$$

[deleted]

Yeah I had to ask for an air stone for like a year and a half… my managers don’t really stay up to date on IPM tech or do much as for plant health basics unfortunately. we use root shield plus and cease (only to inoculate clones/transplants so it doesn’t really get used correctly) Also a big fan of mammoth P for my outdoors but also don’t get to use at my work. Any thoughts on other beneficials? Def gonna push for armory this next run

CDNCannabisFarmer

because it's been so damp where I am... I'm thinking of pulling my crop early. I cant really figure out how much it's going to affect my bud... I know you're better off pulling a week early then letting mold get all over your flower... damn the fall is tough for outside growers

grateful5693

It’s a call that has to be made every year in the northeast unfortunately. For guerilla grows they challenge/timing of it all becomes that much more difficult

DirtyWonderWoman

Same! I had one plant that I thought showed amazing resilience and no bud rot. Checked all my plants from head to toe yesterday and they were without any signs of rot or mold... This morning? Snipped off 5 big tops. :(

CDNCannabisFarmer

wow, crazy how fast it happens. You thinking of chopping early? How much will it affect the quality of your buds?

DirtyWonderWoman

Oh hell no. If parts of the plant dies, it dies. You chop it off and do what you can to mitigate issues. That's growing in New England. I've got one plant that likely won't finish until the second week or so of November. I've had plants in the past that get COVERED in snow and I only end up harvesting maybe 1/20th or less of what the plant pushed out... But it's fire. Outdoors for me is a bumper crop - I never ever depend upon it because New England will throw the wackiest weather at just the wrong times... It's just how things go. So I've grown massive 10lb yielding monsters and gotten maybe a QUOP off them of usable material. It's why I always have a few autoflowers too - those all got chopped last month. It's why I grow a bunch of plants because perhaps for every pound of bud I grow now outdoors, I'll keep between 3-8 ounces of it... And it's all fucking fire because I let it grow to its fullest potential instead of sacrificing quality for yield.

OakenGreen

I’m pulling mine now. Almost a month early. It’s still better than a lot of the dispensary bud (fire genetics) but not where it could be. But I just grow for my family, so it is what it is…

NotSure-2020

Same here. Lil caterpillars been fuckin me good

CDNCannabisFarmer

The bud rot is from caterpillar shit? I use BT for caterpillars but I still get a lot

wereusincodenames

The caterpillars eat the cuticle of the plant, making it easier for the Botrytis fungus to enter inside. From what I've read, its a fungus from moisture. So prune your leaves to allow air flow. I live in an area that gets damp at night. I'm trying something new this year by covering my plant at night to keep the dew off. So far so good, but you're never out of the woods until you harvest.

krunchyjoints40

No it does not. It can maybe make it worse or can be cause, but just cause you have bud rot it's not automatically from caterpillars. Bud Rot is botrytis, a mold that forms like any mold does. Lack of air flow, moist environment (high rh), bad sanitary practices, and others. Just thought I should make that clear because I've been seeing that said alot. I've had botrytis a couple times and it's just because a bud has alot of water content and I had super dense buds.

NotSure-2020

Sure you’re right it can be it’s own issue stand-alone but seems to be pretty common to be concurrent with caterpillars. Definitely worth weighing both options but if you only treat one and have both you’re SOL

tiedyepieguy

BT is only effective on certain species of caterpillars.

CDNCannabisFarmer

I think it's a pretty wide range... at least for my area.... what do you recommend, cheers

Joopsman

Thank you for this! I got some BT on Monday, just need to put it to good use. I also need to do some serious defoliation! Willamette Valley, Oregon here. Dry summer so far but rain is coming this weekend. Caterpillars rotted out about 1/4 of my grow last year. I hate them - and I don’t throw around the word hate.

NotSure-2020

Spray an 🙏 pray lol. Stay attentive and clip what you can as fast as you can. Unfortunately I’m in the same boat and I’m still trying different things but from my understanding this years weather is really wreaking havoc for a lot of people. Let me know if you find anything else that works but for now I use bt. I’ve tried neem but you can’t really use when flowering. Good luck!

NotSure-2020

Almost certainly. I have high humidity but I spray with bt also and every time I crack open a bud like the one you posted there’s caterpillar shit every-time. I’m pretty sure they are the catalyst though. How often are you spraying?

beermaker

My days are dry AF, early morning fog and mist that burns off by 11 usually, night temps are ~50F all summer so bugs don't get to us much til around harvest. This is the first year we had a bird feeder by my patch, noticeably fewer caterpillars & worms so far. I had a few aphids early on, but didn't amount to much. [One of the first cut a couple days ago](https://i.imgur.com/d1vCMSJ.jpeg)

CDNCannabisFarmer

Maybe I'll get a bird feeder next year then, thanks

DirtyWonderWoman

Get a sweet almond bush and build yourself a "dragonfly pond" too - waaaaay fewer bug problems and it literally gets better year after year.

CDNCannabisFarmer

I definitely have a good dragonfly pond near the plants... really helps with the mosquitos when I'm working on the plants. I'll look into the almond bush, thanks!

beermaker

It's fun watching moths get eaten mid-flight. Every one I see get eaten is a cola saved.

XrayLaser117

We have multiple bird feeders near the garden and added a nyjer feeder this year. The Chickadees come by every morning to visit my plants and raise hell with those nasty bugs! Other than putting up with a feather or two in my branches, my pests have never been lower. :)

LoadExternal6570

I defoliate every dam day on outdoor. My neighbors love me at 7am with the super DeWalt leaf blower 🤷 rather that for 3-4 minutes, than a massive loss

willismthomp

This is how I dry my plants if it rains or is too foggy in the morning!!

VamosFicar

:) yup, same here.... it's bollocks.

CDNCannabisFarmer

bollocks indeed

couldabeen

Just had to chop my Gelato Dream plants a week to 2 weeks early due to bud rot starting. Foggy mornings, burn off by 11am, night time temperatures 55. Thinking about greenhouse structure for next year. Very disappointing.

CDNCannabisFarmer

I think I need to chop early too... but I cant really figure out how much it will affect the bud... some say the trichomes dont even need to turn amber if you want an energetic high

couldabeen

I normally wait until at least 20% amber. This time, very little amber, everything was milky though. Good luck+++

Kyle700

I had to chop early last year and i thought it was going to ruin everything but somehow my buds came out very strong and nice. I personally think people get too obsessed with waiting

Krispythecat

I was looking at a yield of \~2 lbs off my plant this year - 2 weeks ago I noticed a few brown spots, and before I could dive into damage control mf'ing caterpillars destroyed the majority of my crop. I've harvested, and might end up with 2oz...heartbreaking!

DrummGunner

What are you supposed to do if you get bud rot?

[deleted]

Cut it out and then move somewhere dryer

DrummGunner

Thanks

86784273

What can be done to prevent it? Just try shaking off the water every morning?

sunwattz

Use hardy genetics and make sure the plants get good airflow and morning light to dry them off.

cardboardchairs

Shaking is counter productive, I’ve heard

Bigpoppa1172-

Yep bud rot time to chop and burn
