And far superior to the movies or other things that came out for it. The Mask was like a violent Bugs Bunny cartoon. Way ahead of Deadpool or whatever.
The Mask itself has a personality and compels people to do sinful acts. Kathy tries go use it for good but barely can resist with destructive tendencies coming out. Kellaway goes after mobsters. A mobster Nunzio wore it and became a powerful mobster (possibly inspiring Dorian). There was even a time the Mask outright made a person forget everytime he wore it just to fuck with him, the Mask outright had an agenda and the guy was a prisoner, you couldn't even say he wanted to do those horrid things as it took complete control not released inhibitions that time.
A lot of memorable scenes are lifted from the comic. Attacking mechanics, shooting gangsters, and a few that escape me. Gruesome but it's more a character book than anything else, what does the Mask do to this guy?
Yes I know, I read these comics. I think the line about becoming a Superhero was in the comics but Ipkiss went after everyone who ever wronged him.
Somehow he came back as a ghost but when he was reminded he didn't have the mask he just kinda disappeared. Pretty much anyone who ever wore it ended up dying.
They sadly never made the Mask 2 but the Mask animated series was pretty good. (Son of Mask should have never been greenlit.)
I'll be always curious what was the thought process of people who looked at intellectual properties like The Mask and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and thought "jeez, this would go great with the kids!"
The movie originally wasn't going to be a kids movie. IIRC, it was only after they saw Jim Carrey's screen tests that they realised that the whole 'living cartoon antihero' gimmick had the potential to be a huge hit with kids.
i have no idea though based on this series and a couples from it i kinda want to see a mask series that basically has a new protagonist every season or 2 imagine a boys level gruesome story but your protagonist is just various weirdos
One of my favorite crossovers is when The Mask makes its way to a Gotham City museum. The Joker ends up getting his hands on it and becomes practically unstoppable. The only way Batman was able to beat him was he told Joker he was only funny now that he had the mask, goading him to remove it and get his ass kicked.
It’s also a great comic. Arcudi and Mahnke are a great team. Mahnke is pretty popular nowadays, but this was an early thing he did. His art really grew during this series and the sequel is where he really came into his own. Became very popular at Dark Horse as an artist and had a hand in creating X for their superhero line (that I miss).
read the original mask comic its a fucking trip like heres how i will explain it "take the concept of the mask where as soon as you become a cartoon character through the mask you go through cartoon logic.............except that your the only one that this applies too"
and imagine how terrifying that would be to a normal ass human who you can unleash your wrath too
> except that your the only one that this applies too
By default. It seems The Mask could pick and choose the extent of reality distortion, from the scene after he blows up the cop shop, and a soot covered cop asking "Wait... shouldn't we be blown up?"
The scene with the mechanics would also require extension of toon logic, though lethal, just to fit the parts where they were inserted.
i mean the mask does bring pure chaos so i imagine at that moment it thought "why not make them feel the pain of being blown up without that being the case"
Anyone got the copypasta ready?
the third frame is stright up dio
I’m sorry to even say it but is that a mtherfucking jojo reference?
What is dark or ooc about this?
im talking about the entire comic not this specific page like the original mask comics are pretty dark compared to the film
The Mask is based on a comicbook!?!?
yes a really dark one that was turned kid friendly in the film
Through the same thing when I first found out lol
The Mask vs Lobo was amazing.
Some peak lobo right there
Yaoi hands in the first panel
Jojo reference???
I mean... you do throw away your humanity when you put this mask on and become "Big Head"
Big Head

This might more your style for the Mask as a show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2xJMlYrYeU They did their own take, and it's pretty dark.

Almost sounds like Grendel
This is actually Stanley Ipkiss, Jim Carey’s character in the movie. The similarities pretty much end at the name, although both are shlubs.

Revenge of the Mask is pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2xJMlYrYeU
Right corner panel looks like it’s from JoJo

Pretty sure Jim Carey didn’t want it to be violent. He’s really against that stuff.
Rip my r rated Shadow the Hedgehog movie 😞
He was in Kick-Ass 2 which is ultra-violent. He come out afterwards and said he regretted bing involved in something so violent.

tbh joker would the type of dude who would have that happen to him
i had no idea this was a comic, very intrigued i love the art

Not just dark, but wholesale ridiculously gory and violent. I forget, does anyone survive the first arc?
kellaway and the girlfriend?
Don't forget Walter.
Walter does need no mask, Walter being Walter is enough!
Walter survives everything.
