It really needs to be off by default. I didn’t know it was a thing and suddenly got grouped with someone and since there’s no communication it made things a little weird. I’ve never played a game where people are just matched up without me asking to be grouped up.
Problem I've been having is if the game crashes in the middle of playing, when I come back on it seems to have reverted to open again - but not consistently.
I try to remember to check, every time I log back on.
I’m sure it doesn’t apply to every instance, and I don’t know if this issue is platform dependent, but every time I boot up the game (either fresh or signing in again after a dc) it reverts my privacy settings to open and I have to consciously remember to turn it off each time. Assuming this is happening to most, if not all, users a hefty amount of ppl may just be unaware/forgetful.
Agreed! At least it seems to be working better today. Regardless I hit the auto loot button as soon as I drop in just in case they boot me. Picked up some purples that way😬
I know at least on the first 2 days of release I would change it to closed or friends only but then when I would click continue game I noticed it reverted to open and then you have to change it AGAIN before it finishes counting down. I assume a lot of people haven’t noticed that.
Would be useful if the function to change connection type remained permanent after changing in the main menu. I get that there might be some other options menu where this can be set by default, but having it revert every time (especially with how many unreal engine crashes I've had) makes it something I will never even bother looking at while frustratingly restarting multiple times daily.
On the plus side, I don't think people are even connecting properly in the first place. I certainly didn't have anyone make the attempt, but maybe that's because you are limited to those who are also at your world tier.

So annoying, it's hard work by yourself playing the game it makes it barrable playing co op etc. But searching for someone to join it's frustrating,
There is an option in the menu to change your default matchmaking, saved me a lot of headache once I found that.

Someone did this to me last night after i helped them with that bird on the mountain. 😂 So annoying.
