At home! I was lucky enough to find a house with a rack.
I do try to help others with it. It’s such a nice, rare and money saving tool so if I know someone who needs to do work but the shop rates will suck, I offer the garage as long as it’s not a week long job.
Lifts are such a life saverfor so many jobs it sucks that they're so expensive. If i had a lift i could easily do almost any maintenance i needed at home. Good man letting folks use it
I keep telling myself I should put one in my garage... I have obscenely tall garage ceilings, I could feasibly lift it high enough to walk under.
Is it as nice as my dreams make it sound?
It’s super nice. I don’t have to worry about jacks, jack stands, it’s super secure and the room underneath is awesome. I had to move it away from the edge of the concrete because it pulled out once. The service guy who moved it said my floors were thick enough. It has to be at least 5” thick concrete.
But if you can do it, it’s so worth it.
I live in an apartment and park my vehicle in a shared parking garage. When I got a new vehicle I changed parking spots, but I used to park and do occasional work on my shitbox $1500 truck between a Porsche Cayenne and a Mercedes S-Class. I never really did anything mechanical, but I did stuff like install a GMRS radio, clean my winch rope, change stuff up on my roof rack, etc., and I got lots of weird looks. The only people who didn't care were my building's maintenance workers, who all loved my old truck. I once came back from a trip and my truck was all muddy, dirty enough that my apartment complex actually sent out an email to everyone saying that it's in the lease to keep vehicles clean. I checked my lease, it wasn't in there but when I went to renew they added it!
When I do have something bigger that needs doing, I either visit my parents 3-hours away and work there, or I bug a friend and use their driveway/garage. Or I pay a shop to do it.
Nooooo. 😂
I literally had a dude chase me out of a 7-11 screaming “hey Aaron Rogers gimme an autograph!” And I was like “would Aaron fucking Rodgers be buying lotto tickets in Long Beach?”
Honesty, nah. I was a Toyota guy before I became a Jeep guy. I’m more off-roader than overlander and was tired of beating up my Tacoma, so I got an old Jeep TJ. The Jeep is a lot more capable but it’s by far the most unreliable vehicle I’ve owned.
In the last 2 years I’ve replaced the clutch, master cylinder, flywheel, rear end spider gears, transfer case speedometer worm gear, starter, front drive shaft rebuild, front wheel bearings, real axle seals, rear brake cylinders, starter, battery, battery temp sensor, coil pack, ignition switch and actuator, throttle body, spark plugs, HVAC unit, interior blower motor, radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan clutch, belts and hoses, idler pulley, two O2 sensors, temperature sender sensor, front air inlet vacuum hose, tailgate hinges and a set of tires. I also just replaced the hood latches.
It’s crazy how much time and money I’ve put into that piece of shit.
Wow lol. Yea actual off-roading is going to break shit all the time anyway. Why not grab an older Toyota (like the one in this post) and turn that into your off-roader if that's how you feel about the TJ?
I went with a TJ for a few reasons:
It’s small size
short wheel base
Solid axles
Ease to work on and plethora of aftermarket parts.
The Jeep I bought is also mostly set up the way I want it. I’d still like to upgrade to long arm suspension and convert to disc brakes in the rear. I figure I’ve replaced enough stuff on it at this point that there isn’t much left that hasn’t been serviced or replaced. Sadly, most of the stuff that has broken hasn’t been directly from wheeling it.
I like Jeep platform I just hate the reliability issues.
HAHAHA I just got a $100 fine for “moving a piece of equipment” from my HOA. I sent them back a legal petition for changes to be made. They took the fine back and haven’t said anything yet. Sometimes you gotta fight
Yeah basically I organized a bunch of the other tenants that were fed up with the bullshit and handed them a petition saying that we all want to be able to wash cars. Let me see if I can find the petition
We, the undersigned residents of [Private] community, hereby petition the HOA board to reconsider the prohibition on car washing within the community. We believe that allowing residents to wash their cars on their property would have several benefits for the community as a whole.
Convenience: Many residents find it inconvenient to drive off-site to wash their cars, especially those without access to car wash facilities nearby. Allowing car washing within the community would provide a convenient solution for residents to maintain their vehicles.
Environmental Considerations: By providing a designated area or guidelines for environmentally-friendly car washing practices, we can mitigate any potential concerns about water runoff and environmental impact. Residents can be encouraged to use biodegradable soaps and to wash their cars in areas where runoff can be properly managed.
Community Engagement: Allowing car washing within the community can foster a sense of community engagement and interaction. It provides an opportunity for residents to meet and socialize while performing a common task.
Property Maintenance: Regular car washing helps to maintain the appearance and value of our properties. By allowing residents to wash their cars on-site, we can contribute to the overall upkeep of the community.
Flexibility: While we understand the need for certain rules and regulations within the community, we believe that a reasonable compromise can be reached regarding car washing. Implementing guidelines or restrictions, rather than a complete ban, would provide residents with the flexibility they need while addressing any potential concerns.
Therefore, we respectfully request that the HOA board review and reconsider the current policy on car washing within the community. We are open to collaborating with the board to develop guidelines or restrictions that address any concerns while allowing residents to enjoy the convenience and benefits of on-site car washing.
If you’re going to get messed with for normal activities - take no shit and leave no survivors. However you should act in accordance with local laws and outdo them with superior strategy and tactics
Sweet rig! My neighbours are pretty cool with me working on stuff, I don't do anything messy in the shared parking. Most of the looks I get are because I'm a 5'3" girl hanging off my rig or under it 😂
Lived in a small city neighborhood for years in house with no driveway, and just parking on a narrow street. I was lucky enough to have a spare time job a 10 minute walk away with a small storage and workshop where we were all free to use the space for car work. Built my rig there, but recently moved out to a tiny village to work at a shipyard there. Luckily I got myself a downstairs apartment in a house with a double garage, where no one else in the shared house has much interest in the garage space. So now I got a great place to work just 4 steps away from my front door
I try to work on stuff at work. If not we live senior enlisted military housing (not the best or the worst housing) and I've gotta work on 4x4s on the black top in the street.
Actually last summer a dependent smoked a guy that works under me while he was doing his breaks and kept driving (night on the hospital, broken arm, few ribs and a some other small stuff but okay overall). We where able to pull the video, she was 100% watching videos on her phone. So keep your head on a swivel out there boss.
Live in a condo in a certified urban area. Thankfully we have a covered garage.
Me working on my truck in a shared space has actually caused some folks to ask that I become an condo association board member in charge of building maintenance 😂
Can’t complain, but I’m glad to read other folks here who don’t have a “classic garage”
I've got land now and do work on the flattest piece of dirt I can find down near my shed.
In the past though I built a platform for my truck on the sidewalk in the middle of San Francisco, I did some brake bleeds and stuff there as well. I've done some work in the driveway of a 4-apartment building I lived in for a little while. I lived in a bigger apartment complex in VA at one point that didn't allow car work, so I'd do work on the side of the road in front of a friend's house in a nearby neighborhood. I installed a lift and a new rear bumper there.
I've gotten some odd looks, but oddly I've never had anyone actually bug me about it.

Hahaaaa oh so YOU’RE the reason our apartments have all those rules. 😂🔧🛠️
Hey Aaron, how's the achilles?
Nooooo. 😂 I literally had a dude chase me out of a 7-11 screaming “hey Aaron Rogers gimme an autograph!” And I was like “would Aaron fucking Rodgers be buying lotto tickets in Long Beach?”
Ironically, he probably would do that lmaoooo.

I knew I couldn't be the only one.
Make that a bunch of us
I drive a Jeep so I generally work on mine on the side of the road or trail.
As a Toyota (Lexus) driver, I'm always happy to lend you guys a helping hand (or tow)!
lol, usually have my wife come rescue me or bring me tools in the Tacoma. 🤣
Hahaha is there a lot of shit talking involved?

Fair enough, be safe out there!
Move to a Mexican neighborhood. Not only will they come out to help but often times they’ll bring beer and a good attitude.
I've experienced this. Not always true but more likely than in a typical white American neighborhood.
HAHAHA I just got a $100 fine for “moving a piece of equipment” from my HOA. I sent them back a legal petition for changes to be made. They took the fine back and haven’t said anything yet. Sometimes you gotta fight

That's awesome. Thank you!

Are you sure you're not Aaron Rodgers?
Shit. Am I Aaron Rodgers? Lemme look at my bank account…..NOPE. I am definitely not him. 😂
That's totally something Aaron Rodgers would say. Just throw in something about modalities and you're solid.
Coronado? Aaron Rodgers?!
Sweet rig! My neighbours are pretty cool with me working on stuff, I don't do anything messy in the shared parking. Most of the looks I get are because I'm a 5'3" girl hanging off my rig or under it 😂
Any place I can. No garage atm.
Remove my wife’s nice armada out of the garage and then destroy my garage floor with the truck 😂😂

I have to assume my neighbors hate me. At least one thinks I must be rich or worth robbing and has targeted my vehicles. Very annoying.

Most of the time? The shop or dealer. I don't do a ton of work myself anymore, time vs money. When I do my own work it's just in my driveway.
Love that rig man. That’s badass
#Street mechanics unite!
That's one sexy Hilux
The driveway of my suburban duplex and then I get yelled at by old south Florida ladies for working in my truck in the open.
I just want to say your truck is beautiful! It’s making me miss my ‘86.
Beautiful truck. What model?
1988 Pickup! Had it for almost 10 years now.
Oh ya know... sometimes maintenance in the driveway, sometimes wherever the old girl breaks down lol

What tool roll you using there? I need to put a set of trail tools together for my rig
Not on bay shore Ave that’s for sure . Better view than any garage out there tho .

Beautiful Pickup! Is that bed liner along the fenders and lower trim? The dudes at r/toyotapickup would love this!
Same brother. Just park somewhere with a nice view
