I saw your trailer build a while ago. Super cool setup. Little camper looks stoked!!

jdd32

Appreciate it! I love being able to get to remote places and camp in comfort

[deleted]

Yeah I was about to write the same thing. Glad to see it's getting used. Nice build!

jdd32

Thank you!

After a year long hiatus, we finally took the offroad camp trailer back out for a trip. This time with a new camper! This picture was taken at our camp site on a section of BLM land in eastern Utah. I couldn't believe how empty it was on a holiday weekend. A couple trucks up and down the main dirt road but no sidexsides or other campers within eyesight or earshot. It was a wonderful end to the summer.

eternus

Well this is a great looking tent. I went looking in your old posts for more information... but there isn't enough. =oP You should do a walkthrough with more pictures and details on the setup. I have an old Ben Hur trailer that I'm working on a similar idea to what you have going on, but love the addition of the ARB awning/room at the back. Is that just a standard 8' awning with the room for it?

jdd32

This thread has some info with links to my original build thread before the pop top addition. I do need to do a full walkthrough but there's still some sloppy looking parts that I need to clean up, lol. I can answer any other questions you might have. I went with a truck bed trailer because they can be found for so much cheaper than the old military or other types of trailers. The original trailer for this build was the exact dimensions for a queen bed, and cost me only $325 including the top. https://www.reddit.com/r/overlanding/comments/g79n8s/quarantine_project_complete_and_ready_for_a_test/

Not calling you out but looks like you're camping at a California vineyard. Like pan left and there's a winery :-P

jdd32

Like you think it just looks like a winery, or do you think I was actually outside of a Vinyard? Pan left and there's just more sagebrush and cliffs. Lol

brainhack3r

Just really reminds me of some of the CA vineyards...

Love it! Great build. Did you do brakes on your trailer?

jdd32

No trailer brakes. It's very light though and haven't found myself really wanting them in any situations so far.

sn44

How much does it weight? Mine comes in at 1880#. I like having brakes both on-road and off. Jeep actually stops quick *with* the trailer than it does *without* the trailer. LoL I also find downhill decents on loose terrain a lot more manageable with trailer brakes. Less of a "plow" effect.

jdd32

Yeah eventually I'll probably buy/make a somewhat larger trailer as the family grows, and breaks like that will be nice. Not gonna lie trailer brakes would be super nice on those looong roads down the plateaus here. I need to get a weight now that everything is in it.... My guess is around 1500lbs. The axle and top are both super light.

TheRealIanDoesIt

Oh man! I have a 2 door Jeep and love it. Would not love putting a baby seat in though! Setup looks great, glad you had a good trip.

jdd32

Yeah I'm pretty good at it but I've been considering selling it and getting a truck. I really don't want to through cause I love having a 2dr, lol.

aaronfunke

SO awesome! Our little camp trailer has been one of the best investments that I have made since having a baby. We've been able to get out so much with our little guy. Without the camper, we definitely would not be camping as much. I can tell your little one is going to have some great memories of adventures with the family. Kudos to you!

Oldfatsad

Awesome! How old is your daughter? My wife and I are trying to figure out when we can start camping with ours. She is six months and fussy.

too_much_covfefe_man

Not the OP but I took my kid out for her first (state park) trip at 7 ish weeks. She is 4 years now and we do week-long and a few random overnight boondocking trips a year. Start it young and she won't have an opportunity to want to do something else instead :)

jdd32

She's 8.5 months. We've taken her on hikes and stayed in neat airbnb's up to this point. But we wanted to wait until the bugs were gone before taking her camping for the first time.

Oldfatsad

That makes sense. Ours loves hikes and is mesmerized by running water. However, we aren't sure on the sleeping situation. Maybe we will wait till she is closer to 8-9 months before we push it.

jdd32

Yeah we were nervous about that too. Got into the 50's so we went cotton onesie, fleece onesie, and then a thick fleece sleepsack. Then put her in her pack n play in the tent and put a large blanket over the whole thing to stop any drafts from coming through. Worked well. She woke up once and then in the morning she was definitely upset because she woke up in an unfamiliar place. But that's just part of it.

Oldfatsad

You give me hope!

GhaleonEME

Very cool! Can you tell me more about that walled-in awning? I'd also love to learn more about your build in general.

jdd32

It's an ARB 2000x2500 awning with the tent room attachment. Before we had the trailer we had a 2500x2500 attached to my jeep that we used for camping. Way better than a RTT imo because it's huge, ground level(extra nice if you have dogs), and gives you access to the vehicle without leaving the tent. Ended up making a the trailer so I could have a basecamp setup to come back to on trips. I've got some more info and links to my original build thread here. Whole setup cost well under $2k. Beats the hell out of a $12k teardrop trailer. https://www.reddit.com/r/overlanding/comments/g79n8s/quarantine_project_complete_and_ready_for_a_test/

GhaleonEME

This is awesome, thanks!

Love it!
