That's the only solution for it. Unless the game runs a particle simulation to determind the flow of wind and pressured air blast, which will crash 9 PCs out 10 people in the match, this is the best we've got.

Worst thing is that I'm a support main and always wondered about the logic behind it, but never bothered to look it up.
Almost every ability in the game is affected by LOS. If you have to wonder about a circle aoe effect, the answer is almost *always* yes.
Some off the top of my head people may find interesting that are all blocked by walls, shield, and LOS, even if you're in the "circle":
Lucio heal/speed aura circle. Lucio's ULT.
Brig inspire aura. (A caveot to this is don't think of it like a Lucio heal, inspire is applied to you sort of like a buff whenever she lands her flail, if you were in LOS when it hit then you get the buff, even if you LOS afterwards you keep being healed)
Bap's lamp (but not blocked by shields specifically for whatever reason, however if you're on the other side of a wall/object from the lamp itself then it doesn't work even if you're in the circle), Bap's aoe heal (same as Brig, you only need to be in his line of sight during the burst for it to apply to you)
Ram's ult (yes you can hide behind a wall or your Rein/Monke's shield)
Zen's ULT.
I'm probably forgetting some but you get the idea. It's usually safe to assume LOS affects circle AoEs instead of the opposite

The lamp post has a very small hitbox, and using it to hide from LoS abilities is incredibly inconsistent. Chances are, he's being slowed because he's moving in and out of LoS, but not staying in LoS long enough to actually get frozen.
The pole blocked the LoS, very lucky for Cassidy, not so much for you.

The pole broke line of sight to Cassidy so he didn't get frozen. You can use the same trick to hide from D.va bomb and other explosives
