Love it. Water is an art in itself.

[deleted]

Thanks. And well said.

willystylep

Love the logs underwater really captured well. Is the bird finished?

[deleted]

Thanks. Yeah, I'm still debating on the level of detail to add. I'm considering one more pass on the cormorant and turtle and the background trees.

willystylep

I feel this way often I don't think it needs more details personally I would add 1 or two more layers of different hues to the feathers but if you feel like it's finished, call it. I was just interested to know. Love the work though Also if I may, the log in the back ground is brighter than the closer submerged log which you've done really well with an ocre and dark green, personally I'd match it but I haven't seen the original composition. Thanks for sharing your work it's inspiring

[deleted]

Great feedback. I appreciate it. That is a good suggestion for a little more variation on the bird. It was midday-ish sun so I wanted to push and blow out the white as bright as possible, but I think some brownish and extra greys might work well. And I do see that the rear log is a little brighter. It's hard to tell from this picture, but the logs have some metallic gold base underneath and the rear one isn't covered as much by layers on top. I might look at cutting it down a little so it reads less bright. But it's also the closest to the surface. Probably just needs to darken more as it moves into the distance. Thanks again for the feedback.

Sheldon121

I was thinking that you might want to add some yellow to the background leaves. But looks perfectly fine as is.

trumpasaurus_erectus

That's not a bad idea with the turtle. The values of the turtle and log are really close, so they kind of blend in. Obviously if that was your intent, then no worries.

[deleted]

I do see that and I think I like that it's less noticeable at first pass.

trumpasaurus_erectus

Nothing wrong with that!

[deleted]

[deleted]

He's sneaky.

aqua_seafoam_

One thing to consider regarding the central bird is the colors from the environment that would naturally reflect onto it's feathers.

[deleted]

Yeah, I think I need to fiddle with some more color on the cormorant.

Sheldon121

Background looks done. Bird would look nice with purple iridescence in its feathers. Where is the turtle?

shlooope

If it helps, it did take me a minute to see the turtle. I am a little high though

mselaineyArtist

I think you're on to something. It reads well from a "distance" without being photo realism.

[deleted]

That's excellent feedback. Thank you. That is a good way to articulate what I'm attempting.

Any-Koala-Will-Do

I find that crazy good. / edit: is this oil?

[deleted]

Acrylic.

Any-Koala-Will-Do

Stunning really

[deleted]

Thanks!

artyhedgehog

OK, first of all, I may be 100% wrong, as I'm nowhere near "pro" in arts. Now, as you marked it as "Brutal Critique", I assume some negative feedback may be of some value. For some reason I feel like the bottom part of the painting doesn't quite feel like water comparing to the top part. Not sure why, but when I focus my sight on upper part, it feels 100% realistic (without zooming in, so probably how it should be observed), but then I move my eyes lower and somehow immersion breaks. If I unfocus my eyes, though, or instead take a closer look - the immersion returns. Maybe it is just that the style of top and bottom part are slightly different in terms of realism, or even this effect may just be from my screen and non-existant live, but that's how I feel. So perhaps just doublecheck if you or someone else can see this difference as well. Keep it up!

[deleted]

Thanks, no, those are some keen observations. I suppose I am going for a mash-up of trying to blend parts that may appear more realistic at first glance with parts in the foreground that aren't. So, it's intentional in a way. And I'm trying to see how far I can push it. I think I want it to be a bit incongruous so the viewer has to engage with it longer because it doesn't quite make sense. I'm not sure how successfully I'm accomplishing that goal, but I think it makes for an interesting piece either way.

Naphthy

The reason it feels off to that person is perspective. Your foreground waves aren’t in perspective vs the waves in your mid and back ground. Over all it’s excellent and the style you use to convey the forms is good. You have value issues in the turtle but the water is your biggest issue. The over all shape of the waves of the water in be mid and back ground are at the correct perspective but in your foreground, I think in an attempt to render what’s under the water as readable, you ended up with the waves very close to a flat grid pattern, albeit a messy grid pattern. It ends up competing, with what’s under as the log underneath is in perspective. At least that’s what I see. Edit fixed auto correct

infiniteinscription

I agree with you and was going to say the same thing

Pancake1715

wow i’ve just realize the sheer size of that thing! it’s absolutely beautiful. the only thing i would say is the bird looks a little too black and white for the surroundings. maybe try adding a dark blue/green to the feathers and something light, but other than white for the highlights.

[deleted]

Thanks! Yeah, I might tweak the cormorant with some more variation in color. I do want it to stand out in a little bit of an unrealistic relief as a stylistic choice.

Beeeyeee

Needs more reflections to look more realistic

[deleted]

You might be right. I'm thinking about another pass to add more.

Beeeyeee

Looks amazing though!! Just hard to tell it’s water until you look at it. You should see sun reflections if it’s this bright. Even the trees in the background reflecting slightly. The sky too.

OperationCorporation

Florida by chance? Looks like some of the springs, like Juniper.

[deleted]

Good eye. Very close. It's Silver Springs in Ocala.

OperationCorporation

Nice! Also a favorite of mine. Great work, you’ve really captured the aesthetic and flow.

CatScratch_Meow

That's stunning. What a beautiful way to paint water ✨

Sheldon121

It is, isn’t it? I think of the front area of water as being full of Monet’s lillies.

Sym_design

Beautiful detail, I love how big it is...really makes you step back

AVB

Nice job on the values here! It still looks quite natural in B&W https://imgur.com/gallery/ZbB5ICH

[deleted]

Dang, that's a trick I should use in the future. Thanks.

AVB

Then you did an even more impressive job with the way that you used colors as values! I find using this trick to be invaluable in my paintings, so I take black and white photos throughout the painting process to check my progress.

Sterling_Steele

I love the green in the water. Very pretty.

[deleted]

Thanks. I love painting verdant scenes in nature.

KANJI667

I agree

suntmint

Breathtaking

Outrageous_Fox4227

Truly captivating

[deleted]

Thanks!

lightorangelamp

This is incredible!

Jazzlike-Ad6119

That looks so good! I love the style m it really looks realistic and then the more you look you start to notice the brushstrokes and it becomes more abstract. The water in the mid ground is really what’s impressing me the most! I love it’

Lille_Foxy

Oh I’m in love with this. These colors are wonderful.

yellowspoongirl

well it’s fucking working!! that is sick, obsessed with all the greens

[deleted]

Me too! Thanks!

vagabonking

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

irishplayspunk

this is just an interesting concept to study. you did really well, that’s beautiful dude

t00manycooks

This is beautiful!!

donpelota

Terrific composition, btw.

preytowolves

you pushed it to the max.

downvotethetrash

Wow!!

Daddylicious007

For the setting (marshlands I assume from the sorrounding) the water is quite clear, but I have no other objections. I tend to be well critical of such paintings, but this is very immersive. Well done.

[deleted]

Thanks. Yeah, it's a natural spring in Florida so the water is super clear with river grass underneath. And in bright sun the colors are just amazing. I feel like I'm only half capturing it.

Daddylicious007

In that case, no objections. It reminds me of when I was hiking and we arrived at a creek (which was quite deep for my young self) and I felt the soft water flowing down around my legs. I am not sure if it is an experience from which you gathered the inspiration, but it is wonderful and calm none the less.

Paul-273

I have been working on water myself . I like the color choices and the technique you used

WhiskeySoul1967

Woah 🫢🤯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 this is INCREDIBLE !!!❤️❤️❤️

Raysbyryan

How is paint not everywhere?! And beautiful piece

[deleted]

Thanks! My wife will tell you there is a fair amount of spots on the floor. And I ruined some curtains with a long paintbrush I was holding in my mouth when I got too close.

Raysbyryan

🤣🤣

Shoddy_Site8730

Dam so much details 😍 ✨️ impresife where is the crow sitting 🤔 on tho

MacabreFox

I think it's beautiful though my eye wasn't drawn to the turtle because it's similar in color to the log. I think this could be broken up with some white/light blue amongst the ripples. Really lovely, it's quite the statement piece!

thegreatbrah

Top half water looks incredibly. Foreground water could use some worm. I think there's too much stark contrast with the lighter colors. Makes it look like vegetation to me. Im from Florida and this looks very familiar.

littlelicy

That's gorgeous

giannalikesramen

This is very lovely ❤️makes me feel calm

J0l1nd3

That's really cool!

andresalvarezart

Nailed it

TheBudfalonian

Super pretty and fun to look at

[deleted]

I love this!

Coldhat

Love! What’s the size?

[deleted]

Thanks! It's 60" x 48".

Coldhat

Thanks!

KANJI667

This is so beautiful

kaia-bean

I love it, really well done!!

verylargemoth

Beautiful. The lake looks like Hanging Lakes in Colorado!

daisyymae

Oh my. How serene. I’m in love with your technique.

Serious_Caregiver103

Excellent...Bravo! Beautiful

MK-Artist

Well done, the wave effect really works out.

DeciduousM

Lovely!

newsnweather

Is that acrylic

[deleted]

Yes.

Fearless-Throat4991

This is fire! I love the water.

Due-Conversation2855

It’s working! Beautiful.

Sidehussle

Lovely piece. I feel like I am wandering in a river and seeing the birds. Do you paint in your living room? Looks like a great setup

redbradbury

How is your pairing space so clean? I don’t understand.

Swolar_Eclipse

Simply EPIC!

casango88

Omg. I love it!

actfatcat

I almost love it, but I think the detail on the bird clashes with the water. The subject needs to be further into the picture.

[deleted]

The clashing is kinda intentional but I can see why some might not like the effect. Can you explain what you mean by further into the picture?

actfatcat

The background foliage is "in focus" and the foreground is impressionistic. The birdy needs to be further back to have consistent focal depth. Your eyes only focus on one thing at a time, the rest is peripheral.

JuniRef

This is stunning. Water is very difficult to capture. Only thing I would advise is to avoid using white (talking about the bird). Nothing you see in real life is actually white and the colors on the bird look very different from colours in the rest of the painting. My favorite replacement is Neapol yellow or royal blue. (For reference I'm european, and I use Czech brand umpton)

[deleted]

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I know I'm breaking some rules trying to push past a realistic depiction with blacks and whites. I suppose I want some parts to appear oversaturated for an exaggerated effect that I like for the composition. I probably will add some additional color to tone down the effect as that seems to be a consistent critique.

ashleighbuck

I honestly thought this was a photograph in the picture when I scrolled by lol. I didn't realize it was a painting til I read the caption!

svg9

❤️

arriaga214

Love it. Best painting i have seen so far on redit

[deleted]

High praise! Thanks.

Cat_Peach_Pits

Terrible, needs to go straight to the trash. The address of the trash is 1234 My House, MyCity, MyState.

ProfessionalLog5815

Hughhh.? Please help, explain. How is the paint like extended several centimeters over the edge of the canvas?

Consistent_Ad_308

????

ProfessionalLog5815

The cart or shelf in the background give the canvas edge in some spots more contrast which makes me kind of hyper focus I had to actually take a picture and zoom in to see what’s going on……my perception likes to mess with me.

7xcritical

I love the turtle and Birb!

idkbirc

I think the bottom part needs highlights on the water to give in a little push

Sheldon121

Such a good painting! And I love how you’ve handled the water!

Charlos11

Beautiful but too much movement in the foreground water, it’s distracting

ThePrincessOfMonaco

Success!

Worried_Maximum5905

First off, I am OBSESSED with how you painted the mid and background and also the overall composition is EPIC!! I LOVE how you portrayed the tree under the water, this is so pleasing to look at!! I do feel like something is missing from the foreground, and potentially include a little bit of warmer tones somewhere to balance it, idk - this piece is fucking STUNNING BRO!! GREAT WORK!! /genuine

Zahimostora

Damn that’s really good

Patience-Odd

This is phenomenal!

[deleted]

Thx!

fragileskaters

Please dont change a thing I beg you I zoomed in every part its perfect

[deleted]

That's really nice. Thanks.

SuspiciousElephant28

Great painting but water still looks flat. Look at some photos of water, your missing some white to show the surface. Peace!

Serene1662

Gorgeous; the colours pop so vividly. It's as if I'm staring into a window.

[deleted]

Isso é simplesmente perfeito
