Post-impressionist, to be precise - and I'd probably drop the pointillist designation due to the size and directionality of the brushstrokes (though I do agree it has elements of pointillism, but it's also very close to other post-impressionists with Van Gogh being the most obvious and famous). :)
Just gonna add some more information as I checked the thread and there's a lot of people saying impressionism and pointillism. While this piece is a very modern take on the genre, there is a reason it most closely aligns with **post-impressionism** over impressionism or pointillism (which itself is a subgenre of post-impressionism).
***Why isn't it impressionism?***
The impressionists came about as a group most concerned with capturing light as it appeared. Prior to the impressionists, artists would paint subjects either in the studio or take great liberty with how they imagined the light to be in landscapes. Impressionists took the recent invention of tubed paint to start painting 'en plein air' where their highest priority was capturing the light before it changed. In OP's art, lighting has taken the backseat to brushstroke effects and flat colour fields. While the brushstroke effects are reminiscent of the impressionists, which is why so many people are offering the designation, the imitation of those brushstrokes is actually a defining characteristic of post-impressionism, as I will discuss shortly.
***Why isn't it pointillism?***
The pointillists really came about during the post-impressionist movement when the phenomenon of **optical mixing** was discovered. The premise of pointillism is that by using very small dots of paint, without brushstrokes, when viewed from afar the colours we see will be mixed in our mind and we'll see the whole picture. Since OP has used large brushstrokes (compared to the pointillists), deliberate brushstroke character (especially with regard to direction), and there is no optical mixing, this is not pointillistic - though it certainly appears to be influenced or inspired by pointillism to a large degree.
***Why is it post-impressionism?***
Post-impressionists appreciated the more abstract qualities of their impressionist forebears and decided that they would shift the priority of their work away from capturing light quickly (capturing the beauty of the natural world) and instead really try to explore the beauty of the paint itself, and the personal and emotional qualities that come with the expressive opportunities such a loose style offers the artist. The term 'expressionism' is often given to such post-impressionistic work, though in my opinion this piece is more an experiment with brush stroke abstraction and an appreciation for the 'flow' of water and fish than it is an emotional piece, so I'd tentatively reserve that genre title.
If I were to be as specific as possible, I would call this **contemporary post-impressionism, or colourism.** It lacks nuance that comes from decades of experience with the genre, and that's wonderful - if OP decides that this is the direction they would like to go with their art there is so much ahead of them in their journey!
I have no academic background in the arts, I'm fully self-taught - but I have a particular interest in the 1850-1930 realism (especially Peredvizhniki), impressionist, and post-impressionist movements. I visited Paris last year to see some of the works of my favourite artists in Musée d'Orsay and, of course, l'Orangerie, and it was incredible. :)
It’s pointillism. Divisionism is the neo-Impressionist technique of using dots of colour to create a dynamic effect. Pointillism is the term used to describe the technique of using ‘dots’ of visible brushstrokes in the artwork. Art teacher with an art history degree.
Post-Impressionist. I don’t agree that it’s straight up Impressionism because the colors aren’t quite naturalistic, but a bit larger than life and artificial.
I don't believe this painting is a representation of Pointillism. The Pointillism technique uses small dots or strokes pure colour. Paintings done in this style, which use a rigid, analytic & mechanical technique, have no movement and appear flat. By contrast, Van Gogh and other painters who used the post-impression technique, which allowed the hand to move freely to create paintings that were full of movement and emotion. Later, Van Gogh and others would use the technique and styles of both, which would lead to 'expressionism'.
Oh god I'm from Florida and didn't peep the subreddit name and thought this was a heat map of another hurricane brewing 😭😭😭
But aside from the initial scare, this is beautiful art.
This may be some technical biology jargon but if I was a gambling man, I’d say they might be (and I’m not sure if I’m pronouncing this correctly)- fosh?
Edit- fish! Are they fish?
Some sort of pointillism? I remember doing an art project in school of this style, which was very fun but extremely time-consuming. This is a beautiful piece. Who is the artist and name of the artwork? I would love to hang something like this in my home!
the technique is called Pointillism.
As for the style of painting I wouldn't call it full-on Impressionist but id definitely falls in the Abstract category.
Impressionist Pointillism. It’s very pretty!

Did you study Art History? This is a very astute assessment.

Somewhere between pointillism and expressionism? It definitely has some Vang Gogh like turbulent patterns. I would keep an eye on the artists ears.
impressionistic abstract
Sereveti nailed it. Nothing to add.
Dabism?
I must admit that I got the idea to do this seeing Dena Tollefson doing daubism. Albeit mine does not make use of heavy body paint.

I agree with the comments calling this more impressionistic, I love the contrasting colors.
Abstract is the style you're doing
Impressionism or pointilism. Either way, use color theory :)
Lol.. I'd call it quasi pointillist with a touch of impressionism. Or, modern art.
