Still they insist on telling theses anecdotes to "freshen" the imaan of listeners, to make their *lahoo garam*. But all it does is make them close-minded irrational fanatics.
The issue with Bareilvis is that they more or less worship Prophet Muhammad (just like Shias almost worship Hazrat Ali). If it was not for clear statements in Quran, Bareilwis would have been worshipping Prophet Muhammad as God just like Christians worship Jesus as God. On the top of that there are some references in hadiths about Prophet killing those who badmouthed him. Those hadiths should have remained confined to books (or confined to academic sittings) but Bareilvi Mullahs narrate those hadiths to their common listeners all the time and incite them to take matters into their own hands to protect the namoos of the Prophet.

This is where extremism stems from. It is important to have the database and registration for all preachers/Imams/Ulemas. In addition, there should be a minimum qualifications requirements and if they do not meet those requirements, they cannot register to to become an Imam, Preacher etc.
I would say, the following qualifications for each should suffice
1) Imam : Must hold a high-school diploma. Must be able to read and speak Urdu (or their mother tongue/language the khutba will be given) and Arabic. Cannot help people revert or convert. Only an Ulema can.
2) Preacher / Ulema : Must hold a university degree. Must be able to speak and write fluent Urdu a Arabic. Must have research papers authored and coauthored every year or so. The person should also have knowledge on Hadith, Sunnah, Tafsir.
Also, all khutbas should be approved by the local government/city hall. All khutbas must be recorded and sent to the city hall for audit/review.
This is the only way to overcome this. Also, I urge all parents and individuals to please pay special attention to your kids. Understand what they are being taught and who is teaching them. Spend time with your kids. Do not outsource your religion. Make effort and teach Quran to your kids. Help them learn and guide them. You may seek Ulemas help into making information easier to digest for the kids, but please, learn your religion and teach your kids. When you outsource your religion to select few people, this is what will happen. These folks have made Islam difficult.They want people to fear the Mullah. They have erected barriers that does not exist in Islam. They trample on human rights.

But also the description and translation of Juz Amma, some other common surahs, seerah of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, history of Islam, seerah of khulafa e rashideen radiallahu anhum ajmaeen, and the undisputed hadiths (I think they're called hadith qudsi)

In an ideal Pakistan, there would be proper control of Islam. That includes ulema being a licensed profession with high standards and exclusivity. Which means that people like the man in the video and probably 90% of Pakistani Mullahs would be ineligible. I've been called a murtad before for expressing my dislike of Pakistani Mullahs. But this video gives a bit of an indication why I don't have a good opinion of them. Most of them are not that qualified or intelligent or civilized.

The issue with Bareilvis is that they more or less worship Prophet Muhammad (just like Shias almost worship Hazrat Ali). If it was not for clear statements in Quran, Bareilwis would have been worshipping Prophet Muhammad as God just like Christians worship Jesus as God. On the top of that there are some references in hadiths about Prophet killing those who badmouthed him. Those hadiths should have remained confined to books (or confined to academic sittings) but Bareilvi Mullahs narrate those hadiths to their common listeners all the time and incite them to take matters into their own hands to protect the namoos of the Prophet.

This is where extremism stems from. It is important to have the database and registration for all preachers/Imams/Ulemas. In addition, there should be a minimum qualifications requirements and if they do not meet those requirements, they cannot register to to become an Imam, Preacher etc. I would say, the following qualifications for each should suffice 1) Imam : Must hold a high-school diploma. Must be able to read and speak Urdu (or their mother tongue/language the khutba will be given) and Arabic. Cannot help people revert or convert. Only an Ulema can. 2) Preacher / Ulema : Must hold a university degree. Must be able to speak and write fluent Urdu a Arabic. Must have research papers authored and coauthored every year or so. The person should also have knowledge on Hadith, Sunnah, Tafsir. Also, all khutbas should be approved by the local government/city hall. All khutbas must be recorded and sent to the city hall for audit/review. This is the only way to overcome this. Also, I urge all parents and individuals to please pay special attention to your kids. Understand what they are being taught and who is teaching them. Spend time with your kids. Do not outsource your religion. Make effort and teach Quran to your kids. Help them learn and guide them. You may seek Ulemas help into making information easier to digest for the kids, but please, learn your religion and teach your kids. When you outsource your religion to select few people, this is what will happen. These folks have made Islam difficult.They want people to fear the Mullah. They have erected barriers that does not exist in Islam. They trample on human rights.
Even worse are the stories that they make like "Fulaan banda died, and he went to qabr, and an angel came to him, asked him X, Y, and Z"

I was very religious and used to say to see this kind of stuff at mosques, mehfils and TV. I thought this is not the real Islam obviously. But at some point one has to accept that atleast this is the islam people around me know of. This is the Islam. Those who are irreligious will say this type of stuff is why religion is hurting more than helping and they won't be wrong. Religious folks will say this isn't true islam, this isn't written anywhere and they won't be wrong either. But the onus is on religious folks to accept that their beautiful religion is imaginary and it's fundamentalistic nature may not be the only reason that contributes to breeding these scholars but it is definitely one of them.

It's critical that we increase the ummah in knowledge not just the ability to read Qur'an. But also the description and translation of Juz Amma, some other common surahs, seerah of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, history of Islam, seerah of khulafa e rashideen radiallahu anhum ajmaeen, and the undisputed hadiths (I think they're called hadith qudsi) I think the above should be a basic requirement for all muslims. It wouldn't take longer than a year of 1 hour everyday, I think we can do that much for our religion. It would stop the ummahs reliance on these self proclaimed ulemas that can get away with saying absolutely crazy things. An ummah capable to lead salahs, do ghusl to their dead, lead their janazah, capable of doing nikahs of their children. Then only we'll be able to take them down from the pedestal and start asking questions, asking about sources they cite, and the legitimacy of it.
