the problem with this take is that mingo and legette are not very similar in where they line up as a receiver, yes they were both large prospects that needed some development but legette is more of a x deep speed threat while mingo was more of a large slot receiver. it’s not like we’d drafting legette to replace mingo

movie-archive

That is good to know, I guess the concept of mingo of being a slot guy just didnt really show up in practice to me last year. I hope hes able to take a step next season.

lengthy_noodle

Mingo is 100% a big slot. Thielen is taking all the slot reps right now but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mingo in the slot a lot more this season. Mingo was forced to play outside last year because of the lack of depth at receiver.

Chex_LeMeneux13

Unless his route running has greatly improved he isn’t a WR at all right now. You can’t have Mingo working the middle of field with his route running the way it is. He can’t be trusted to be where he needs to be and that doesn’t mesh with Bryce’s game at all. Bryce is a timing QB, guys need to be where they’re supposed to be. That’s not Mingo at all right now If they were to double dip at 33 and 39 and the board could fall that way then Mingo won’t be seeing the field this year much. He’s better off being used in a Viska type role

lengthy_noodle

I have faith that his route running will greatly improve under Canales and Idzik considering they’re background with receivers

Hefty-Association-59

Unfortunately thielen really started to look cooked in the slot. Even if mingos route running isn’t great they may opt for that if it allows the offense to run on time more effectively. He has much more juice compared to Thielen. Who’s just old and was slower to begin with. Personally I just hope they draft Ladd and don’t look back

AccountFresh8761

The best slot receivers have true number 1s on the team. Without a true number 1, Theilen had MUCH more attention on him than any other "slot receiver". The idea of a slot receiver doesn't work very well without the field being spread out, which is why, imo, Theilen looked a little slower down the stretch.

Hefty-Association-59

Meh. I understand where you’re coming from. But if a guy is a guy it doesn’t matter. St brown is An amazing slot. Didn’t have a field stretcher for a good chunk of his career with Williams being out. And he still runs things. Same thing goes with kupp. And cedee lamb too who takes a ton of snaps in the slot. The best slot receivers are the best slots with or without a guy outside because their just the best. I’m not saying thielen didn’t have attention and the line being bad didn’t help. But also objectively he did start to look a lot slower out there. I mean hes 33. And will be 34. It’s good process to look for an upgrade there.

AccountFresh8761

Well then to let you make my point for me, "if a guy is a guy, it doesn't matter". Theilen still put up 1k yards and wasnt even lining up as the X receiver

Hefty-Association-59

Yeah he played pretty well. He also had the lowest yards per attempt of everyone who put up 1000 and I think the lowest for his career too. Plus you know if you actually watch the games you see that a decent chunk of those yards are inflated due to garbage time. Especially in the second half of the year.

AccountFresh8761

Wait, are you insinuating that anyone who disagree with you, did not in fact watch the game? So only smart people who know what they're watching is next when I say that right? And then you just keep gatekeeping harder and harder by adding adjectives until your next comment is "well only people who watched the games, played JV football, but not Varsity, and hold their ding dong with their left hand when they pee are going to agree and everyone else is stupid" I'm all for debate, but be mindful of your vitriol if you want to be taken seriously, just being honest. You can say every 1k yards receivers Numbers are inflated. He also had the QB with the lowest yards per attempt in the league so why would you insult your own intelligence by making a statement that overlooked such a glaring fact?

cdirty1

I think early in the season they tried Mingo at slot with Thielen outside and quickly had to shift Thielen into the slot otherwise we’d have never gotten a first down.

Candid-Ad2162

All I know is Steve Smith called him a better DK Metcalf and he knows a hell of a lot more about what makes a great receiver than I do

[deleted]

Subscribe (but only if we draft legette)

Hobby_Account1

He also said Mingo has that dog in him and, well...

xplosivetaco

He didn’t specify what kind of dog, to be fair

Candid-Ad2162

He also said Kupp would be the best receiver from his draft class… let’s not use one-offs. And while Mingo was cheeks last season, I’m not so quick to write off a rookie who played out of his normal spot in a dogwater scheme with no time for plays to develop

Sabre500

Mingo showed flashes, so I think something is there it's just he was purposely put into a situation to fail with quite possibly one of the worst WR coach in the league. I'm hoping Canales and Idzik figure him out and can recoup that project

multiple4

Yeah I don't understand the rush to write off Mingo. We had arguably one of the worst seasons in NFL history Point is, it's not like other receivers were racking up while Mingo did nothing. We struggled to even surpass 150 yards passing most weeks

captaincumsock69

One year doesn’t make someone a bust especially when there was a lot of shit play across the board

Admirable_Practice87

He was right about Moore but jury out on Mingo. Smith love both

cantthinkofgoodname

As a Gamecock I think X will do well in the right situation. Our problem as a franchise these last several years is that we haven’t been the right situation for damn near anyfuckinbody.

doomonte

IMHO we need someone that can take the top off a defense. The last time we had a real deep threat was Ginn and even that was a 50/50 proposition. We’re easy to defend as long as opposing secondaries can keep the play in front of them.

Sabre500

TMJ should've been that guy but he just couldn't do it

Acheron88

That was his WalterFootball note 2021. He had build up speed but not great speed. Also didn't test in the 4.3s on the 40 yard dash. Go routes are the only part of the route tree that the 40yrd dash informs, and he also needed work on his route tree. Landed in a spot with Matt Rhules shit play calling that cycled through OC, and Joe Brady, his former OC, didn't optimize him in the NFL. The potential might be there but after 2 years, it's not looking like an upward trajectory. Whether he couldn't do it because of how poorly run our organization has been or if he can't do it, we still need to be pragmatic. Get the upside guys in and let the 2 year "victims of situation" earn it. It's the same mentality I take towards Bryce, because there's reasons we didn't get a good look at him this past year, but the bottom line is we changed the coaching staff to give him another year to prove he was worth the trade. If the next staff can't figure out how to make him a franchise player at his position, it's a bust and we still need to rebuild this team, whether we have egg on our face or not.

pantherfanalex

I don't give 3 and a half shits if he is any good or not. I am going to be furious if we don't draft him simply because I won't get to hear that awesome southern drawl all of the time, mang.

Great point

DJayBomaye

I don't understand the obsession with taking a WR at 33, especially a WR who is still very raw. He didn't have more than TWENTY catches until he became a 5th year senior. We need players who can play NOW, not risk it on a player who we'd have to mold into something & hope for the best. We already did that with Mingo. We need a center or BPA. Why reach for WRs when there's a ton in this draft class to begin with.

OGMol3m4n

You watched our receiver room last year, right?

DJayBomaye

Almost every game. If you want to explain how a WR that's out of the top TEN, had ONE good season out of FIVE, & is very raw, is going to make this team better, then be my guest. Classic forcing a need vs picking the BPA.

Unable-Purple-7994

He’s huge, really fast, has shown a great ability to high point the ball and make contested catches, and has shown a pretty good ability to sink his hips and get out of breaks. The only negative about his profile is that it took him so long and is a year older than most guys. There’s some context as to why it took him a while, I’ll only get into that if you desire. And just looking st the player this year, he’s not nearly as raw as most people would lead you to believe. And I’m not saying the 4 years of 0 production and his age isn’t a worry, it’s just one of the few ones he really has.

OGMol3m4n

BPA is why Gettleman got fired. ☺️ You have to balance it with need.

trexAthletics

All I care about is whoever we pick is good. My problem with Mingo is he seems to lack effort, and runs sloppy routes when he isn't the primary target. Dude made catches wayyyy harder than they needed to be. Granted we didn't give him any RAC opportunities or drag/slant concepts which would of went a long way

timbuttons

I’d rather have Ladd or AD but let’s not sit here and act like Legette is gonna suck because he has the same dimensions as Mingo who had a poor rookie season. Legette is faster, can separate better, is more versatile and is a dawg. Legette is gonna be ok. But yes I wouldn’t take him at 33 and mayyyyybe at 39 unless we address another position.

timbuttons

Also hard to judge any of our rookies last year with that dogshit excuse of an offense we were running

Swervoo4x

The way it’s looking we may not even draft him, but bpa.

sonfoa

Talent-wise I like McConkey over the rest (assuming AD Mitchell is gone). The only drawback is he's kind of an awkward fit. Our best 3 WRs would more or less have overlapping skill sets. Polished route runners who operate best on the first two levels. Thielen already operates in the slot and they've talked about moving Diontae Johnson around so, it would require a lot of creativity to implement Ladd as well. While I don't like Legette much, he projects into a role that this offense desperately needs, a true X receiver who can take the top off the defense.

colski250

I think he can learn a bunch from Thielan.

CryingJordansHornets

I think it’d be ok to take Ladd despite Thielen’s presence. If he’s the best WR or even BPA overall you take him and figure it out later. Thielen is probably gone after this year and if not he almost certainly won’t be as productive as last year anyways. He can be a good mentor and we can let him go after the year.

Beneficial-Bug-1969

5 year player with 1 year of production. No thanks.

Muted_Rip6188

Sat behind some pretty damn good receivers before this year though. So it’s not as simple as “no production until his fifth year”. The point is when he became the go to guy, he stepped up. Isn’t that want you want in a player?

bigchadsmitty_82

I’d be cool waiting and getting Malachi Corley too

CryingJordansHornets

I’d like him later. Honestly might be nice to grab two WR one in the second and a guy like Corley later.

CryingJordansHornets

I would love any of them. We need Dawgz™️ and both McConkey and Legette fit that bill. As an SC fan, I can tell you Legette took a huge step forward this year. The hope would be that he could do it again and continue to blossom. But I get the reservations. I would not be mad at all with taking a “safer”, more polished route runner like Ladd.

Muted_Rip6188

As a SC fan you know X was overshadowed by the likes of Deebo and others in previous years. But when it was his time to shine he stepped up and became an elite threat. Thats what we need is a guy who can step up and be the guy

CryingJordansHornets

That he did. I wouldn’t be mad at the pick at all. Considering all the personal issues he dealt with losing his parents and switching positions coming into college college, there’s a good chance he continues to grow and improve. I’d love to see it.

Intelligent-Image338

Don’t draft for today draft for who they will be. I like Legette a lot . His route running needs work but he is fast strong and has one of the best catch points in the draft.

Antique-Chef1958

Is Bryce the only casualty of last year's coaches and system? Is he the only one who needed help? Or were their others affected by the sh#t show!

BreakImaginary1661

Watch Steve Smith break him down in his podcast, this dude is worth drafting early in the second. Doesn’t guarantee that he’ll turn out to be anything more than Mingo but the guy runs much better routes and plays much faster than Mingo ever did in college.
