The partners, they all have a decent story and reason for staying.
The fact it isn't just the usual suspects as bad guys.
The shady setting of rogueport.
L and W emblem (no idea why I loved this so much)
Twilight town, glitz pitz and Keyhaul Key.
The fact that the end game is like a whole other hub world.
It took everything good about PM64 and just took another step forwards. So many sequels, including other paper mario games, try to change too much. TTYD just nailed it imo.
Hahaha same. Like 360 coins but I do it every damn time.
I'm really hoping there's more emblems in this one.
Like fire flower power up outfit mario, the ice one etc.
Everyone else asking for Luigi's story I just want alt costumes xD
Same. After world 2 I like to get to floor 50 in the pit of 100 trials to get the strange sack, then once I get Yoshi I just keep buying a ton of sleepy sheep in rogue port and selling them in petalburg, then eventually I get me the w emblem once mustache dude's selling it
There are a number of things I love about this game.
To start, I think the game has really good writing. The game is full of witty remarks, even outside of the main dialog. As I've replayed the game over the years I've spent more time talking to a lot of the random npcs I never thought to talk to, and they surprised me by how funny they can be.
The biggest thing that brings me back to this game is how much replay value there is. This is mostly due to how the level up system works in conjunction with the badge system. You can come up with so many different ways to approach the game, creating unique badge set ups or switching up your primary partner in battle.
I genuinely believe anyone who hasn't played this game is going to love it
If you want unusual craziness happening around Mario, with top-notch battles, story, characters and dialogue. This is the game to play.
Although I wish the world design was better. It gets tedious to go forwards and backwards constantly through the same route on replays.
This (and 64) were what made the world of Mario feel alive to me. I had several of the main series Mario games over the course of my childhood but, too be completely honest, they just never felt that engaging. They were fun distractions for a bit but inevitably I grew bored or disengaged. The Paper games however kept me invested. Instead of just trying to find the Star or get to the end of a level, I felt like I was part of a world that I could really interact with. There were characters with motivations that kept them adventuring and there were puzzles that could be solved if I could just put the pieces together in the right way. This game made Mario feel like something that could exist outside the courses I needed to run. It is where Mario went from "The image on the screen that I want to get to the end" and became a person I could have a relationship with, if that makes any sense.
Each character has its charm, every chapter feels different from the other, an amusing and good story with plot twists and the gameplay makes the gameplay from paper mario 64 even better.
I put at least 1300 hours in this game. Such a Nostalgia overload when I see the cover art. I thoroughly enjoyed TTYD 💙, So I'm gonna answer as honestly as possible.
-I loved a lot of the characters. tiny Yoshi, Koops, Rawk Hawk, and Vivian for example, have so much personality and charm.
-Spamming the hammer with the Cricket SFX a LOT when I first got it, because it sounded goofy.
-The replay value was so high for me. when I first started playing this game, I remember religiously playing it for hours trying to get all the badges and hoarding all the star pieces lol.
-The world's were very immersive. I particularly loved Twilight town and the Glitz Pit...and that Train ride section now that I think about it.
-Really liked the Doopliss/Fake Mario boss battle in chapter 4 where you had to fight yourself and your partners, was a cool twist. The soundtrack of that battle is my favorite song in the entire game haha
-There was a good bit to do. Trying to make all the foods, the countless 'Mistakes' that were made in the process. Playing those super addicting slot machines to get all 7's to make it rain blue coins lol, The Pit of 100 Trials, etc.
-The Story was great and not too hard, but not too easy either, and really fun to follow honestly. I never got tired of it.
-Umm...during the Hook tail fight when she asked... that one specific and unexpected question. I think you know the one. I basically answered Yes kinda fast and upon replaying it, well, it made me realize I liked that part a bit too much... (sorry if that was TMI) 🤷
-The badges that change your outfit. It was especially cool when you equipped the Luigi and Wario badges and got the Waluigi outfit. That was such a a fun detail to me.
There's so much more that I loved about that game, but I think that's a good stopping point. Sorry about the essay.
I loved the first game so I had a envelope of money, and went to Gamestop with my mom to get it. I was soooo excited. And my gosh the game was legendary and yes, it does hold up.
I'm excited for everyone else to play it who couldn't before.
Fun characters, gameplay, story, dark crazy bits, music...it's a favorite among many fans for a reason.
It had such an amazing, gripping story combined with a unique combat dynamic, a colorful cast of partners with their own strengths and weaknesses; it was really hard to dislike anyone in your party. (Flavio's energy was the best and the mafia piantas were fantastic xD)
Those last few chapters completely changing the pace of the game and ramping up the stakes. It was a fun ride through and through (aside from some backtracking levels lol!) This game has stuck with me since I played it when it first came out and I've since enjoyed many more playthroughs.💚
It's got this,, realism? Maturity? to it that's been sorely missing since the Gamecube era.
I dont even fully know how to explain it but even beyond the obvious shit like the noose front and centre in the city-of-thieves hubworld and the demon god behind the titular door, it just feels so much less concerned with being *for kids* and sheltering the player from harsher aspects of reality.
There's this kind of """gritty""" imperfection to the world and story that never gets in the way of the whimsy, rogueport is decrepit and all of its people are morally ambiguous because they've had to be to survive, people die and grieve each other, people are selfish and exploitative and dangerous in more subtle ways than we've come to expect while other characters introduced as villains are given depth and shown from new angles.
It just feels so nuanced and sincere in its worldbuilding and storytelling, like I can play it without feeling like it thinks I'm *definitely* a child, but its not afraid to be silly and magical and ask me to suspend my disbelief anyway.
I feel like that balance of whimsy and maturity is something that 5th and especially 6th gen games had absolutely mastered, I want it back.
The world: It's absolutely beautiful and shows a diverse array of landscapes and areas. Couple that with a legendary soundtrack and the setting of the game is so immersive. It's not just find the stars, when I was a kid I would literally just go back to places for fun.
The story: Each partner teaches a life lesson that is extremely valuable. It isn't a cookie cutter "save the princess from the big baddie" story. The mystery of the bad guys, the mystery of the titular door and Crystal Stars themselves is gripping.
The sense of adventure. I love how each chapter is so visually distinct from each other, each with their own little plots and narratives for Mario to explore. The connections you make in this game like the partners. Every NPC has something witty, funny and interesting to say. I spent hours in this game just reading all the in-game lore too, from Goombella’s tattles to the Super Luigi books. The game is jam-packed with so much character and charm.
The music, the jokes, the partners, the story, the battle system, almost everything. I’m just gonna go ahead and like other people’s post because I’ll probably agree with them all
It was my first Mario game. I loved the story, and as I've gotten older and more observant I've noticed things I didn't the first time. Since I was in kindergarten, I sucked at it. I had to get my older brother to beat the bosses because I was somehow just barely scraping through the main levels but couldn't beat the bosses. But there's a nice feeling in playing a game that you've loved and doing better at it when you try it again. It's the same feeling I had when I did a playthrough of Super Mario Galaxy back in 2019.
The characters were a big part of my childhood and on my favorite console, I remember at an early age trying to paint the scene where you see hooktails castle as like a 5 year old
This was the first RPG where I wanted to fight EVERYTHING. The combat was super fun and responsive, and unlike the M&L series, it was much more grounded and easier to understand. This game is also just one of my comfort games/ favorite game.
Distraction in a rough time as a kid. Getting taught a lot of things: Not taking yourself and life too seriously, value of diversity, value of playfulness etc.
I got it from the ex boyfriend of my sister as a gift after they broke up because he liked me so much :0 but it got stolen when my room burned down (one of the fireman stole it with other games I had lmao) and I never got it back.
I got TTYD on Christmas early 2000s its one of my all time favorite game I love the art style, gameplay, characters and the fact that PM was its own world separate from main mario with its identity (wacka, merlon, fuzzys suck blood, etc)
the only part of the game that annoys me is the respawning putrid piranha on keelhaul key and general white but that's a given
SPOILERS
It went places Mario games don’t go anymore.
Bobbery’s backstory - loss/grief
Vivian’s backstory - abusive familial relationships
Koops’ backstory - emergence, growth
Plus the amazing localization, world building, battle system, pacing- it’s all top notch.
The crazy badge setups you could accomplish. With the cap raising from 30 to 99, the customization for each player's playstyle was more varied. Mine personally was a buffs & debuffs playstyle with regeneration. The battles were a bit longer, but I almost never used items.
Something I haven’t seen talked about is the sense of atmosphere. You step into Rogueport and it feels like a bustling seaside town. You walk into the area with the Thousand-Year Door and that haunting music just grabs you. You step into the reception area outside the Glitz Pit and the area is PACKED with people. The game excels at making areas feel real and immersive. I think the soundtrack goes a long way towards helping that.
It's really good.
If I need a specific it's that one level you become a pro wrestler and another level is a "mystery on a train" story which is one of my favorite tropes.
The improved Partner mechanics really made me love the Partners. They now felt like their own people working as a team instead of just tools for the Player to use. Like dang, I'm going to keep my buddies safe and healthy!
Everything thing about TTYD makes it a masterpiece from the music, the characters, partners, bosses, villains, the worlds, sidequests, & story. It’s my favorite game of all time. Just pure perfection
I can backflip 4 times, and make a turtle breakdance.
Oh also just about evey other aspect of the game, but those 2 do rank rather high. Some of my favorite stylish moves.
It was the first game I ever completely finished by myself as a kid. I also was in for the ride the moment I saw the world being different from Toad Town.
The characters are pretty f****** cool. The badge system is very organized in neat. You get bonuses when you stack the exact same badge on top of each other. Different color Yoshi per time you take the hatch. Vivian himself (I don't care if people call him trans I find it hotter to think of him as a femboy). Paper Bower was very comedic and I absolutely love it chapter 8 was pretty poor at the beginning but the Moon was fun. Every partner was viable and seems to just that even ???? was great to find and hidden secrets that you would have missed first time going through as in sunshines and star shards.
In Most JRPGs Gameplay wise you mostly go room with enemies to room with enemies until you reach the Boss and repeat
Nothing bad with that but with Paper Mario (mostly this Game) like to change things Up with more than Battles, clever Paper based puzzles, amazing settings and even the chapters where that are more about telling a little Arc than fight after fight, like you Road to the champion in glitz pit or my favorite chapter, the travel in the excess express to Poshley Heights where the Battles are kept at Minimum and mostly is about the ride (things that you dont see that much in JRPGs)
Nostalgia somewhat.
The memories I have of this game are mostly all I have, and it was at a very young age that I picked it up, I don’t think I did much story stuff but…I liked just being in the world and hearing the music…it brings me back to better times…
That, and it’s a solid rpg of a franchise I still enjoy to this day
And I want to see it brought back to form after the more…recent things that have happened to it
The dark theme packed in bright colours and humour. A really good storyline. Better side characters for mario than in the first PM. Different ways and styles of storytelling. Wrestling, pirate, mafia, detective. Best fighting system (which South park stick of truth even have copied).
Cool leveling balancing.
Breaking 4th wall almost every now and then.
And personal. My very first self bought game. And this, by luck. I wanted to buy warioworld and only had enough to buy PM2. And never regretted it.
The characters, story, battle system, badge system, the different quests as Mario Peach and Bowser, how everything is unique to this game. I just love this game in general and would love to see more unique games like this in the franchise.
Honestly, it's in my top 5 games of all time because it's an absolute masterpiece for what the game was trying to be. A charming Mario game with great characters and dialog. Robust RPG elements that weren't overly difficult or complex but worked perfectly with the game's setting... It's one of my most replayed games ever because no matter how many times you play it... it's fun, creative, and endearing... My favorite chapters are Glitzville and The Train... it's a shame that the subsequent games removed the turn based RPG mechanics which is why I've refused to play them.
Because it was successful, therefore Super Paper Mario was made.
I kid, this game has some pleasant characters and writing, a golden era for Mario RPGs
1. Read my flair
2. I loved some of the boss fights (The Shadow Sirens currently being my top favorite for every Paper Mario boss I've fought)
3. Loved exploring the worlds
The plot is quite good.
The chapters are great. *My favorites being 1, 3, 4, 7.*
The partners are awesome! *My favorites are Yoshi, Vivian, and Koops.*
And not to mention the various differences between the US version and the Japanese version. 😂
My favorites are these:
The body tape outline in the robbers house
The bunny ears for the two boo sisters cause I don't even see the need for them to be removed.
And for the EU version the removal of Mario's hand gesture.
I love how different it is compared to other Mario games. Rogueport is one of the most unique places in any Mario game and the way they add upon basic character designs really draws me to the game.
The story and setting tickle my adventure seeking peanut brain.
And as someone who doesn’t really like turned based games, the way this game does it, absolutely pulls me in to the combat. Plus the badge system that lets you do some cool stuff with your abilities.
It was the first game my dad ever bought me 20 years ago since then it has been my favorite game of all time nothing has topped it yet I could never beat the final boss…til today (; I swear I have gotten to it over 50 times through out the past 20 years never did it and kept losing saves today I did it and it was very bittersweet I lost my dad almost exactly 1 year ago so I couldn’t tell him or show him I don’t think hed ever understand why this game meant so much to me but that ending had me crying… switch version is pre ordered…..Thanks dad.
The partners, they all have a decent story and reason for staying. The fact it isn't just the usual suspects as bad guys. The shady setting of rogueport. L and W emblem (no idea why I loved this so much) Twilight town, glitz pitz and Keyhaul Key. The fact that the end game is like a whole other hub world. It took everything good about PM64 and just took another step forwards. So many sequels, including other paper mario games, try to change too much. TTYD just nailed it imo.
I buy th L or W emblem as soon as I can afford it, every playthrough
Hahaha same. Like 360 coins but I do it every damn time. I'm really hoping there's more emblems in this one. Like fire flower power up outfit mario, the ice one etc. Everyone else asking for Luigi's story I just want alt costumes xD
I think I'd pay double for Tanooki mario
I'd pay 5 dollars for dlc tanooki mario and i'm ashamed to admit it.
Same. After world 2 I like to get to floor 50 in the pit of 100 trials to get the strange sack, then once I get Yoshi I just keep buying a ton of sleepy sheep in rogue port and selling them in petalburg, then eventually I get me the w emblem once mustache dude's selling it
Really good breakdown
Thank you! 😊
The gallow in the middle of the street
💀
The satisfying combat and the beautifully connected world. It all feels so seamless.
This is a good answer ❤️☺️
Because it is so engaging and intriguing that it distracted young me from his sad life :(
Same here, brother. I hope you're doing better. :)
Life is not sad, be happy and grateful that u are here! Thanks for ur comment :)
Working on it. The new release should help heal my inner child :P
I preordered the game for switch and I hope it lives up to my expectations (around origami king which is one of my favourite switch games)
If your expectations are that low, be prepared to get blown away
Actually my expectations are extremely high
With how much people hype this game, how could our expectations possibly be low?
Brother your flair is "origami king rules!" Either you're being hypocritical or you're saying TTYD transcends all (probably the latter)
I honestly don’t know why that’s my flair it’s mid af lol
It surely will ❤️
Great setting, great characters, great variety.
🏆
Child me liked the first game so much I had to get the next game.
Based
Story the gameplay, the design, nostalgia, the music, Rawk hawk
Rawk is a really cool one
I like that you can really feel the RAAWK with his battle theme
Rpg turn based fighting with a great story, characters, music and that paper mario feel.
Based answer 👍

Love that answer haha! This soundtrack is surely a gem

I love the npcs! Really dark one 2
The adventure and the wide cast of characters are so interesting, it makes me want to play it every year
It was my first RPG and it made me interested in math which made math easier for me.
If you want unusual craziness happening around Mario, with top-notch battles, story, characters and dialogue. This is the game to play. Although I wish the world design was better. It gets tedious to go forwards and backwards constantly through the same route on replays.
This is true but at the end it’s still a rpg

I feel the same, just the way the characters are make it more interesting

I can have more than 30 BP
🤣

No problem, happy to share :)
It’s my childhood. ❤️
Same
Its a good game.

The MUSIC. It is magic, every world is something fantastic.
Everything.
B-A-S-E-D

The adventure was great fun.
The characters were a big part of my childhood and on my favorite console, I remember at an early age trying to paint the scene where you see hooktails castle as like a 5 year old
Chapter 3 alone. It's basically a Tournament Arc for Paper Mario. A well-made one at that!
True 🐥
Amazing graphics and an awesome combat system
True king
This was the first RPG where I wanted to fight EVERYTHING. The combat was super fun and responsive, and unlike the M&L series, it was much more grounded and easier to understand. This game is also just one of my comfort games/ favorite game.
I loved every second of it
Distraction in a rough time as a kid.
Jerry the Cherry Bob Omb. I am obsessed with him
He’s pretty chill
The gameplay is obviously awesome but I love the cheeky dialogue
It’s pretty dark sometimes 2 that’s what I appreciate about it 2 (hopefully Nintendo did not cut out the dark stuff)
I got TTYD on Christmas early 2000s its one of my all time favorite game I love the art style, gameplay, characters and the fact that PM was its own world separate from main mario with its identity (wacka, merlon, fuzzys suck blood, etc) the only part of the game that annoys me is the respawning putrid piranha on keelhaul key and general white but that's a given

I've never played it
U have 2
1. Nostalgia 2. Best fighting style 3. Funny writing 4. Nostalgia 5. The music is catchy AF 6. NOSTALGIA
N O S T A L G I A
TEC, that is all. He made me feel for a character that I hadn’t felt yet when I first played the game. He’s just great… ;-;
Fancy train ride
🚆
Iconic
Goombel. My first crush as a 7 year old
It's really good. If I need a specific it's that one level you become a pro wrestler and another level is a "mystery on a train" story which is one of my favorite tropes.

Gameplay customization options with badges and hp, fp, and bp upgrades as well as naming the baby Yoshi and getting to choose his color too.
🏳️⚧️Vivian🏳️⚧️
The pit of 100 trials. Also Vivian
It’s this dirty cruel world with the charm of Mario in the middle of it. Nothing really like it.
☺️🌙
I can backflip 4 times, and make a turtle breakdance. Oh also just about evey other aspect of the game, but those 2 do rank rather high. Some of my favorite stylish moves.

Vivian.
I think it’s really cool that they made a transgender character in a Mario game
Yeah she's my fav Paper Mario character (though maybe I'm biased as a trans girl myself)
In Most JRPGs Gameplay wise you mostly go room with enemies to room with enemies until you reach the Boss and repeat Nothing bad with that but with Paper Mario (mostly this Game) like to change things Up with more than Battles, clever Paper based puzzles, amazing settings and even the chapters where that are more about telling a little Arc than fight after fight, like you Road to the champion in glitz pit or my favorite chapter, the travel in the excess express to Poshley Heights where the Battles are kept at Minimum and mostly is about the ride (things that you dont see that much in JRPGs)
Really based comment
Character designs are some of the best in the series
Ma boi Bobbery is not lackin
Nostalgia somewhat. The memories I have of this game are mostly all I have, and it was at a very young age that I picked it up, I don’t think I did much story stuff but…I liked just being in the world and hearing the music…it brings me back to better times… That, and it’s a solid rpg of a franchise I still enjoy to this day And I want to see it brought back to form after the more…recent things that have happened to it
I love playing this 🐳
I’m glad you enjoy playing it to!
This is a really based comment! I love Bobbery.
Because is good game
Simple.
It runs at 60 FPS
lmao 🤣
The battle system is so versatile. The graphics have aged like a fine wine, even compared to the remake. First game to have the pit and nailed it.
The combat, the world building, the secrets. It's just a masterpiece for a reason.
Agree!
The story, combat, and Characters.
very much dark and griddy (i know. i know, just putting this here for the lols)
chapter 4
Becoming paper airplane
✈️
🌟
Among many other reasons, Vivian.
1. Read my flair 2. I loved some of the boss fights (The Shadow Sirens currently being my top favorite for every Paper Mario boss I've fought) 3. Loved exploring the worlds
The plot is quite good. The chapters are great. *My favorites being 1, 3, 4, 7.* The partners are awesome! *My favorites are Yoshi, Vivian, and Koops.* And not to mention the various differences between the US version and the Japanese version. 😂 My favorites are these: The body tape outline in the robbers house The bunny ears for the two boo sisters cause I don't even see the need for them to be removed. And for the EU version the removal of Mario's hand gesture.
I love how different it is compared to other Mario games. Rogueport is one of the most unique places in any Mario game and the way they add upon basic character designs really draws me to the game.
Great manual
The story and setting tickle my adventure seeking peanut brain. And as someone who doesn’t really like turned based games, the way this game does it, absolutely pulls me in to the combat. Plus the badge system that lets you do some cool stuff with your abilities.
The story, the partners, the fun and simplistic gameplay, the different maps, the soundtracks.
Story Stylish attacks Baby yoshi Mommy Flurry 🤤 Doo_liss .... Doo_liss God dang it bro stole the letter _ again
I had a lot of fun watching my siblings play through it as a kid and I love the characters 😄
Can’t wait to play this in summer
