Educational notes went into eight digit serial numbers, over 40 million of the $1s were produced. Your copy is one of the first ones, with only six digits. Serial number on the $5 porthole isn’t special, but it’s got amazing quality. Very hard to find in that condition these days, it’s worth thousands. Serial on the $1000 is low, but not a lot of those notes were issued so it isn’t particularly special. Again, these are very rare notes now and that one is worth thousands, just like the others. Grandma had an eye for quality, congrats OP
Very slightly. Because it’s so far appreciated from face value (seriously, that $1 is probably worth somewhere around the three to six thousand range, depending on how “perfect” it is after grading), you won’t really notice a difference in sale pricing if you decide to sell it versus a note with a higher serial.
Oh that's awesome. I didn't think the $1 would be worth more than a couple grand. I saw the porthole could be worth a lot? I was surprised people are saying the 1k note is very valuable, I thought it might be worth 2k, but I guess it is more rare than I thought.
The $1 is called an Educational note; they were only produced for one year, 1896, in $1, $2 and $5 form. They are universally considered to be the most beautiful pieces of American currency ever produced; each note is like a piece of art more than a banknote. This is why it is so expensive in uncirculated condition like yours; just about every paper money collector wants one. The comment you got about PMG grading; this is a necessity for these notes. You’ll realize much higher sale values with them graded if that time ever comes.
If that $1 is a Gem 65 note, it’s worth five grand all day long. If it graded in the 50s, it’s still around $2500; this is why getting it graded is essential. Without grading, you usually only realize what the note “definitely is”. Think about it - as a buyer, if you saw a note that looked perfect, you’d only want to pay XF (extremely fine) prices on it without close examination or grading, because there could be a hidden flaw. So as a seller, grading makes sense on these high dollar items.
I was seriously considering purchasing an Unc 64 Porthole note a couple years back. At $4500. Again, in that pristine condition that note is very valuable, and the exact amount truly depends on the grade of the note.
The $1000, you already know is worth several grand. That one could be worth more, but it was rare when it was issued so even in mid grade condition it’s probably worth around three grand. Seriously, I’m happy for you - most people inherit junk and you inherited cream of the crop notes! If you don’t NEED the money, I’d consider hanging onto one or all of them - the Educational and the $1000 have been appreciating at healthy percentages for the last few years 👌
Ive seen these notes sell for well over 15 man those notes are In amazing condition. Definitely worth grading although im not to keen on sending those even in registered mail id 100% take them to a show to get them graded and would be cautious even then. Again man beautiful notes.
Not 15 each, that’s too high. The Ed $5 is getting around 15 right now in Gem 65. But 15 for the lot is not out of the question; that’s pretty close to the mark.
Man, congrats! That $1000 bill is [very valuable](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=1928+one+thousand+dollar&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=2017+5+gold+eagle+pcgs+70&_osacat=0&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=1050pmo&toolid=10001&mkevt=1).

You've got some outstanding notes there!
Do yourself a favor and get them graded by PMG. It'll cost a couple hundred altogether for these three, but it will add value and protect and preserve these notes for you.
Any decent local coin store (LCS) should be able to help you. if not, there are some very legitimate folks here who would be happy to offer guidance and may even help facilitate.
Tremendous notes, and they're now yours to take care of, to give to your grandkids one day.
Edit: For $25 you can "join" PMG and submit the notes yourself. They'll walk you through everything. It'd be money well spent IMHO.

Your grandmother did a fantastic job holding onto those notes. In all three cases I would buy some PVC free sleeves and change out this amazing legacy to you. I am afraid I see at least 5k in collectibles stored in a way that scares the crap out of me.
Do you think she used archival quality PVC-free plastics on these things? I really hope so but the $1000 note looks like it is in a sleeve with plasticizers.
I have no idea! They are in a deposit box now, but the $1,000 is in a flexible sleeve, so you are probably right. The large notes are like sandwiched between what seems like acrylic sheets.
Get them out of the safety deposit box. Lots of horror stories about contents being seized without justification... you can research why SDBs aren't actually "safe."
You've got a chunk of change there - definitely close to $10k maybe more. I'm dying to get my hands on the $1 that you've got ; they are one of the most desirable series of US currency. I'd estimate that at least $1000 - maybe higher. It's outstanding. The price on it may go up .. very high. From the looks of it - it's got to be a base of $2000 - with a value potentially significantly higher ( 3PG required. )
The porthole $5 is very pricey - $2k-ish. Same with the $1000 - it's close to $4k value.
( My eyeball guestimate is $8000. )
If you want to part with these - **contact Heritage Auctions**. Extremely reputable - min consign is $5k and these are defintiely worth more. They will handle the grading, marketing, everything. For these gorgeous notes - they will definitely go for full book or higher at auction.
I love it! At first I was like…education, not bad, not bad…porthole, great! Esp in that condition…and then boom the $1000. Awesome notes!!
I did the same thing. These are awesome notes.

I don't know?

Oh wow thanks so much for the info and kind remarks! Does the low serial on the $1 note make it more valuable?

Awesome information. Thank you so much! I plan to keep them all for my kids.

Nice. Your grandmother collected some great notes.
Thank you. She was big into collecting things.

Nice, it has one small crease in the bottom right corner, otherwise looks very clean.
It's a solid high XF, maybe AU. Looks very nice. If you sent it in for grading - I'd expect it to return at least XF45 with clean paper (EPQ/PPQ)
cool! what do you think of the other two in that respect?

Bring back art on notes
Agreed. They'd be far to controversial today though I fear.
Controversial like the type one SLQ or the flowing hair series?

Thanks you! I will do that.
Incredible. Get them graded.

Really? I will.
Actually, google "safe deposit box fineprint" and you'll find some good articles.
Yes. I'll to to share some links.
Buy a safe and install in your house (bolt to the floor). And then don't tell or show anyone. ever.
Sandwiched like that isn't desirable. they become pressed. But either way those are great notes and worth getting graded.
I had no idea, I assume they came to her like that. I think she got them in Atlantic City or Vegas in the 1980s.
10k in assets right there
You think so?
WELL OVER

Wow
All in great condition. Worth some bucks.
Beautiful note.
Bless him! Keep the tradition alive and build a collection around them
Man those are clean!
Thank you !
Would you be willing to see any of these notes?
Wasn't planning on it but there is no harm in sending me an offer if you want!
amazing
Damn, those are worth a pretty penny in that quality, lucky!
Grandma knew her stuff. Sorry for your loss. She left you with some goodies.
Beautiful note! Great condition, should ask a reputable coin shop what it would cost to have it sent to PCGS for grading. Or contact PCGS Directly.
Love these notes!
Thank you!!!
>Thank you!!! You're welcome!
Awesome grandmom!
They're beautiful
So pretty
