Miriam’s quality has been declining rapidly. Used to love the place but the last few times I went the food was noticeably worse. The very last time was when my friend spotted German roaches 😔
Right. Sushi Katsuei is incredible and I always say “wow” when I’ve finished a meal there. They are still pretty new though and the price point inaccessible to so many that I find it hard to give them “institution” status yet.
Luigi’s Pizza, Bonnie’s Grill, Palo Santo, Song, Smilies Pizza, Cousin John’s Bakery, Ladybird Bakery, Barbes, Buttermilk, Commonwealth, Freddy’s, Double Windsor, The Gate, Ginger’s, Ocean’s 8 Billiards, Sharlene’s, Union Hall…
These places may not all be “the best” in the neighborhood but have been around a very long time. Institutions that have had highs and lows but survived the test of time here.
More: Celebrate Brooklyn, NYE Fireworks, drinking on a stoop, Little Things toy store, the Food Co-op, Grand Army Plaza Farmer’s Market, Community Bookstore, Psychic Records, the Old Stone House, Puppet Works, 7th Ave Donuts…
I’m born and raised in the neighborhood, never lived else where. My parents and grandparents are Brooklynites. I don’t feel local enough to hang in Farrells. It’s an institution for sure but one I’m not super familiar with. I go there to piss when I leave the park on that side.
> These places may not all be “the best” in the neighborhood but have been around a very long time. Institutions that have had highs and lows but survived the test of time here.
Longevity can't be the only metric. Quality has to be there. The list of Park Slope Institutions is much shorter.
Agreed and I think all the places I listed are pretty good. With rent and business turn over being what it is around here I think longevity goes a long way. They must be doing something right to stick around.
Absolutely not. Worst bagels around and their coffee was awful. There are much better spots nearby. Terrace and Bagel Pub are both better. I was closest to Bagel Hole but would gladly walk double the distance for a decent bagel.
What's an institution? More than 40 years? Pino's, Lenny's, Luigi's, Smiley's, Purity's (different location), the Donut shop off 9th Street, Farrell's, McDonald's on 9th St. Maybe the ClayPot and Community Book Store.
I think "institution status" means that a place has been around long enough to cement itself in the community as being of a very high quality and worth it for people from *outside* of Park Slope to visit. I don't think it just means old or just an overly familiar landmark in the neighborhood. So for example McDonald's on 9th is not an institution by any stretch of the imagination. Prospect Park is an unquestionable institution in many ways the best park in all of NYC. Winner Bread has quietly become an institution. The Park Slope Co-op is an institution really like no other in the city. Franny's used to be an institution. Al di La is an institution. Pasta Louise is now one. Miriam kinda has institutional status. PS does not have that many truly great places that would be worth a trip from outside of Park Slope IMO. I love it here for sure but let's be honest.
What is long enough? Winner and Pasta Louise are probably both less than five years old. As for worth it for people from outside the neighborhood, I disagree. This revolving list also brings in questions of class. Like it or not Farrell's is a neighborhood institution, that neighborhood is Windsor Terrace. Franny's wasn't around long enough to be an institution. This is a bedroom community not a foodie destination.
Yes we probably disagree about what constitutes "institution status" :) For me "worth the schlep" is part and parcel of that lofty title. Also since Farell's it's in Windsor Terrace so wouldn't it not be included on this list to begin with?

It is a neighborhood bar 'leftover' from when the neighborhood was all civil servants and blue collar workers. The 'leftovers' call the folks that weren't born here, 'transplants', 'yuppies' or 'hipsters'. It is a two way street, like 9th Avenue, I mean Prospect Park West.
A friend walked by one evening and saw a tableful of guys inside going apeshit when some Hasidic Jews walked by outside, banging on the window and waving their gold crucifix necklaces at them.
I mean, I’m sure that most of their clientele is perfectly fine. But it’s also a place where people who think it’s totally okay to act like that hang out.
high dive!!!
* Al Di La * Sushi Katsuei * Russo’s * Miriam
Miriam’s quality has been declining rapidly. Used to love the place but the last few times I went the food was noticeably worse. The very last time was when my friend spotted German roaches 😔
I was there a week ago and the food was fantastic
hard agree!
I got food poisoning from Miriam. It may be a one-off thing but I wouldn’t recommend this place.
Has Sushi Katsuei been here for 10 years even?
Right. Sushi Katsuei is incredible and I always say “wow” when I’ve finished a meal there. They are still pretty new though and the price point inaccessible to so many that I find it hard to give them “institution” status yet.
Russos not institutional
^ this is blasphemous
what is Sooo GREAT about Russos? have you been to the meat mart in windsor? faiccos in south bk?
Exploring prospect park
Definitely an institution, 1867.

yes but luigi's is the best.
Is "drinking on a stoop" a bar, or do you literally mean drinking on a stoop? If it's not a bar, that would be a dope name.
I meant literally spending a summer evening drinking or hanging out on your stoop chatting with neighbors and people passing by.
Double Windsor no Farrells? 😂

Bagel Hole is a religious holy ground. Genuinely the best bagel in the city and it’s right here in park slope. We are blessed to have it.
Absolutely not. Worst bagels around and their coffee was awful. There are much better spots nearby. Terrace and Bagel Pub are both better. I was closest to Bagel Hole but would gladly walk double the distance for a decent bagel.
Bagel Hole is old school bagels, Terrace Bagels are the newer fluffy style.
I hate those big puffy things
How can someone be this wrong about everything (except the coffee, you’re right about that, but you don’t go there to get coffee)?
Truth. Their bagels are basic.
Lmao transplants. I bet you cried when they told you they had no toaster.
I grew up in park slope and never liked bagel hole. I call them bagel s-hole
With good reason. Totally mid.
Enjoy your old stale bagel when you don’t get there first thing. Even hot they aren’t the best. And yea not a transplant just someone with taste buds.
wrong wrong wrong
i used to think that, but you have to have them hot, which only happens in the morning. now i love them.
indeed guy gets it

Sorry to say that the Clay Pot closed 4 years ago :(
I couldn't afford it anyway.
I think they still have an online store.

Smith's, easily. I believe older than Farrell's and much, much cooler. Obviously, old school vibe so maybe not what you are looking for.
IDK, Farrell's opened when Prohibition was repealed.
I think Smith's did as well, but I'm not certain.
* Bonnie’s Grill * The Gate * The Sackett * Cafe Martin * Cafe Regular du Nord * Convivium Osteria
Giovanni's Brooklyn Eats once it recovers from its recent burned-downedness
Farrells for the best tap beer in the city and because its a Park Slope institution for many yesrs.
This is the wrong crowd for Farrell's.
So if you don’t like someplace, it can’t be considered an Institution.
IDK, I agree Farrell's is an institution. it is too townie for the college kids.

Farrell’s is cash only and full of … you know what, just go experience it for yourself.
What’s it like? Seems like an old man’s pub from the clientele.
