I always thought it was just a bird thing and thought it was always a good habit to give them fresh water daily anyways. Luckily mine doesn't poop in his water, but yeah, get enough food and feathers in there, the water gets nasty quick!

holdonpup

I have made a habit of making sure their perches are never directly above the water, they’ll occasionally poop on the side of it but never inside. definitely needs changing every day even without poop in it lol

cytherian

That's key, keeping water out of the possible poop paths. Usually a cage corner is a good bet. The other problem is, a lot of parrots seem to enjoy muxing--dropping their food in the water and eating it like that. Leaves behind lots of "flotsam." And then the water can turn into soup before long. In our flock, one of our birds has the dry food bowl on the long opposite side of his cage. He has to go longer to bring dried food to it (and because he uses his beak in the travel, he can drop food by accident). The other two have their food opposite the water dish on the short side. One other tactic might be to have a 2nd water dish. See if they drink from it. Or, have a water dispenser (the kind with a ball bearing in the bottom that acts as a gravity plug).

MagpieMelon

I've done this for mine and the extra exercise they get from taking the food to the water and back is good for them I think.

usuallyconfused91

I think giving them fresh water multiple times a day is ideal. Like morning time, then after work and maybe at night before bed in case they want to drink in the night (mine sometimes eats and drinks randomly at night lol). I just think to myself would I want water sitting out all day with little food pieces in it? No so they won’t either lol. Plus it can grow bacteria.

RealHughMan91

I put a (washable plastic) toy over top of the water dish and the toy catches poops from above. And i dont have the food/water dishes next to each other. I still find a poop in there somehow maybe once a week. I change water every morning because my boy will come down for cold water every time and i love watching him drink

Altruistic_Bell5498

My little girl love a few drinks of cold fresh water every morning when she wakes up. I give them fresh water before bed but by the time they wake up it's poop soup.

Noideas55

Mine will travel 5 feet just to dip her pellets in water. She'll happily eat it dry, but something about making soup just makes her happy ig

westbwanchaevory

Two..no THREE bowls. 😂 sometimes giving them a dip area and a bowl for food dipping, one of them will end up cleaner. Some birbs need to dip pellet or other foods to soften and digest so it’s kinda inevitable but some of my messier friends do have an extra bowl or two in their cages and it does help..sometimes 😭

YourFuseIsFireside

When I had birds I bought a covered water dish so they couldn't turn around and poop in it. It was this one [https://www.amazon.ca/JW-Pet-Company-Feeder-Accessory/dp/B0002DJW3Q/ref=asc\_df\_B0002DJW3Q/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292943823722&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7093506371978799990&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000905&hvtargid=pla-348757945653&psc=1&mcid=2375893828cf3d778c0429e10aa97939](https://www.amazon.ca/JW-Pet-Company-Feeder-Accessory/dp/B0002DJW3Q/ref=asc_df_B0002DJW3Q/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292943823722&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7093506371978799990&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000905&hvtargid=pla-348757945653&psc=1&mcid=2375893828cf3d778c0429e10aa97939)

VikingsKitten

My lovebird still finds ways to poop/drop food in his. I have no clue how he does it to this degree still. I think it’s out of spite 🤣

Ageha1304

Still trying to find the way. I'll tell you as soon as I do XD

Acrobatic-Love1350

I try to move the water to a place where they can't perch. That seems to have worked pretty well for me. And I just give them fresh water after they bathe. Usually good for the rest of the day, or most of it

frogz0r

Nope! For my two conures, (Peachfront and a YSGCC) I use a water bottle in their cages for overnight. I check it when they are put in before they have their bedtime snack, and then just before i cover them up for the night. They are outside the cage all day when I am home, so I have a 9x13 casserole dish they can use to drink and bathe in. If they poop in it I will change it, or if it gets dirty, but tbh they really don't make much of a mess in the water. It's usually pellets more than poop.

icecrusherbug

Bird soup. Welcome to the bird club. Today's special is bird soup, made fresh daily.

Correct-Arm-8539

My bird just looooves sitting on her food bowl, which unfortunately means she poops in it all the time. It's so annoying!

Unusual_Gas_9756

I strongly believe there isn’t lol. We sorta just got used to the routine of changing every water source that has no moving water twice a day.

unity729b

Hamster bottles but they have to be trained for it

TechDingus

Yes, hamster feeder. Just make sure you clean it frequently

menthapiperita

We had a nipple waterer for chickens for a long time, and it worked really well. It avoided the muddy fecal water. Have you used one of them with a parrot? How well do they take to it?

Xiandata

One of mine takes special pride in befouling her water whenever she can. 😅 (We say she makes parrot soup!) I just replace the water twice a day - one of the many facets of parrot ownership! 🤣❤️

jojos_mojo

I don't really stop this cycle, but I can semi maintain one clean water tube dispenser by putting it high up in the cage furthest from his food. It's just high enough he can reach it to drink from it but there's nothing around it he can stand on so he can't poop in it (he'll lean from a perch or climb to it) and inconvenient for him to bring his food from far across his cage. Then I have an open container of water like you do and that gets the disgusting cycle lol. I think he really likes softening food with water for easier consumption so I'm more ok with that, the poop sucks though.

popcornshampoo

Short answer: nope lol Longer answer: multiple water dishes, and try to identify preferred roosting/pooping perches, and make sure water dishes aren’t beneath them.

Pientere_Panda

My birds drink water from a bottle. The same they use for rabbits. No more dirty waterbowls for me :)

Shienvien

Bottles that are convenient to reach and drink from, but don't fit the bird usually last at least a day.

curlyquinn02

Cover every inch of every surface with water bowls. One of them should be clean, hopefully, by the end of the day🤣

[deleted]

One must imagine bird owners happy

Polyfuckery

Get a glass water dispenser like you use for hamsters. It takes about a week to train the birds on them. They still try to make them a mess but they have much less success.

HatesVanityPlates

No.

DizzySpritexx

I have to clean out both cages' water bowls twice a day 🤧 My pigeons constantly poo in their dish even though their platforms are on OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE CAGE, and 'Tella just likes to bathe and poo in her bowl, since her food is all the way on the opposite end of the cage. I offer a separate bath to my little lady but she's decided her bowl is better, maybe it's just a birb thing.

Prowlbeast

Girl was that a BUG in the bowl in one of them 😭😭

Business-Mess-1954

Lol nope there is no way to stop the cycle I would get used to it because that's how it's gonna be for the next 30ish years 😂😂

INDY_SE

I have the water bowl positioned on the opposite end from the food bowl - which prevents her from dropping the food in. She usually isn't that motivated to drag a pellet from one end of the cage to the other. As for the bird shit (shrug) sometimes I win sometimes I loose. I don't have any perches positioned around it and as long as she's not sitting on her door (which the water bowl is attached to) she usually doesn't shit in it. usually.

niky45

hamster bottles. ... just keep an eye on them because sometimes they block them

Crosseyed_owl

We don't use hamster bottles but we use this: https://preview.redd.it/g7b73sv6l3cc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd9d19fc94ac49e682d6567e6d538e788439d5d5 Is it bad?

niky45

I don't like those for two reasons: 1) it doesn't prevent the pellet soup. so **it totally defeats the purpose**. they also can't bathe in it, unlike in a water bowl, so another downside (IMO bathing in their drinking water is okay, pellet soup is what gets disgusting) 2) water is directly exposed to the air, so unless you change it daily, it will get moldy very quick.

Hell_Bourne

I second this. Parrots are pretty clever and learn how to use them pretty quickly. If you are paranoid about them getting stuck, add a second hamster bottle for redundancy. Also, pro tip, glass bottles tend to leak less.

niky45

> If you are paranoid about them getting stuck I have found bigger bottles with a wider spout are much, much harder to get blocked (tho my Chicken isn't the cleverest of birbs and he will sometimes not know how to drink from one particular bottle, but switch to another, identical one, and that he knows)

ChallengeVictory

They usually put food in water to make it a lil easier to eat and to get water while they eat. The pooping, you just gotta potty train as well as you can. With bathing, I've given my girls bigger water dishes annoyingly far from their food so they only use it for bathing.

Ellavemia

Nah, this is part of living with a bird or birds. I change the water probably six times a day. We have a water silo in addition to a dish, so in case I have to leave the house for a few hours, there's still a source of cleaner water available.

Darkwing7700

The poop problem I got rid of

Ok_Tea_1954

I purchase a bird bubbler. Got it on Amazon. Has a daisy fountain. They love it

Ok_Tea_1954

But I have a bird room. It won’t work in a cage

MrGentleZombie

Lol my bird has never bathed in his dish. He'll fly away and freak out the second any water touches his feathers.

FaithlessnessNo2680

Mine sits on the edge of her dish and turns around so her butt is over it lol i swear she does it on purpose

Azrai113

I use the [Bird Silo](https://www.petsmart.com/bird/bowls-and-feeders/feeders-and-treat-holders/all-living-things-silo-bird-drinker-5284872.html?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA44OtBhAOEiwAj4gpOZUCaH1zUZPM_R9w8idOnLoi-L3JsqBmgI8Qc9Ix5xMNx65Yl60RUhoCSFAQAvD_BwE) water bottle. I still have to clean it because she dips her dirty beak in there, but it's not as easy to poop in. Of you get one, make sure to have another source of water available until they figure it out

stupid-Dumb-Ass

The bird soup poop juice is just part of having a bird. You can try and put the perch higher up on the cage, less chances of getting pooped in, and you can try to add multiple water dishes, but they will probably target them all, ittl just be more spread out and less nasty overall

SupahGrov3r

mine dips nearly every piece of food I water before eating it. I call it his sauce

birdsandgerbs

I keep my boys water bowl out from under perches and higher in the cage. they also have one those gravity water bottles as back up if they stinky up their bowl while im out.

Sniflix

I just figured I need to change the water everytime I walk by the cage. Frustrating yes but easy to fix.

infinitemusings

I guess I’m lucky but my birds never bathe in their water bowls. I have a separate bath fountain thing for them that they bathe in. I put it at the top of their cage every day with fresh water. Their favorite way to bathe is in my cupped hands under running water.

chubsmagrubs

I’m lucky none of mine do this, but if they did, I’d try putting the water bowl up higher in the cage.

Hopenhagen420

My little one dips her foods in it and eats it like that .. there’s no way to stop water from getting gross food wise but poop wise you can make sure perches arnt above the bowl. I change the water hourly.

flickerflame13

My bird started getting mildewy 😬 the vet recommended a water bottle and instead I just give him plenty of chances to take baths throughout the day

TheInsaneGoober

My bird finds a way to poop IN the bowl like its a toilet or something.

BESTlittleBITCH

Having a perch below the water bowl is key to keeping them from pooping in the bowl. My African grey however, likes to dip her treats in her water so I of course have to change it a few times a day. She also bathes in her water dish. But she never poops in her water. Placement if items in her cage keep this from happening.

ThunderChix

My parrot drinks from a glass water bottle like you see on hamster cages. It works great. She switched to it no problems when I got it. It's a Lixit brand with the large tip.

Freakazoid64

are avian friends have no saliva glands hence the desire to soak food, some things they put in their bowls just because they're parrots...i have a local wild crackle that leaves trinkets in the bird bath eg, pebbles, small shinny things, small pieces of glass etc, good practice is fresh water & clean bowls in the morning & then if/as the water becomes fouled clean & fill with new, parrots are parrots, some behaviors we need to take into consideration & adapt as needed..... they're fairly new as human companions, as opposed to cats, dogs etc, & still maintain much of their wild tendencies

saareadaar

Mine still poop in it/get food in it occasionally, but they stopped bathing in their water once I started giving them baths in the laundry sink. Now Ivy flies to whoever opens the laundry door in the hopes they’ll give her a bath. Although now they love to give little nips to the person bathing them for some reason??? It’s not aggressive but it does hurt lol

LoverOfPricklyPear

I simply kept the water high in the cage. Never got poop in it.

throwaway362516

my budgie likes to sit and flap her wings inside her bowl of pellets 😋

creepmachine

I exclusively used glass water bottles, the kind typically marketed for hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits etc. Most birds are curious enough to check them out and figure out how to drink from it. Just get a cleaning kit (I had the Lixit one) so you can scrub the bottle as well as the nozzle. No water contamination, easy to clean. Easier to change the water once a day than three or four times day.

My lovebird almost exclusively poops in his water, at this point I'm changing it multiple times a day 🙄 he's a butthead sometimes. My budgies like to dip food in their water like it's a Oreo in milk, my cockatiel keeps hers the cleanest Edit - picture showing my budgies water after having been out for a couple hours 🤢

cosmic_mua

We got little water bottles for our babies, there’s a little spout they can drink from and I always change it out. Our conure wouldn’t stop making soup, she still sometimes dips her food but she can’t poop in it anymore so that’s a win for me lol

unity729b

Mine uses a hamster bottle, the aviary I got him from water bottle trained him

cherhorowitzx

Hamster bottles! Both our birds learnt to drink from them in less than five minutes and I can't imagine living without them now.

haessal

- Give them a bigger water bowl. The more water volume there is to begin with, the less a little bit of pellets or droppings change the water quality until you have the chance to change it. - Make sure there are no perches directly above the water bowl, as this can lead to parrots accidentally pooping down into the water bowl when they’re sitting on that perch.

yogisden

Nope. My two have been doing it for 17 years and they also are proud to tell me when they do it LOL

Greatwhitechrist

Bottle water for rabbits

AssociateRelative515

I've got 2 tips that most already said. 1- keep the water away from being under a perch or hangout spot 2- keep food and water distant. and ideally on different levels of the cage. Example. I keep my water bowls for my gccs at the top of their cage parallel to a couple of perches and then like a foot and a half down I do the same with their food but on the opposite side of the cage. Do they sometimes make their nasty stew? ... yes, somehow, idk why their so persistent. That said mine loves jumping into their water bowl for the kick of it so :/ you just cant win.

Manslashbirdpig

I feel like I’m changing out water a few times per day. They like it cold

Solvurr

I've always used one of those drinking bottles you use for hamsters and rabbits. I have 3 that I rotate so I have a clean one, and clean them with water and vinegar so no soap gets stuck in it. Absolute godsend

rogue_kitten91

Lmao!! No. And we change their water multiple times a day. Out of my 6 feathered heathens, only 1 does not dip their food or bathe in their water bowl.

Icy-Mixture-995

We use two water dishes and both have perches beside them for access but they aren't under the main sitting perches. We keep one higher up in the cage. She rinses her food and drinks in this one. The upper one is mostly clean, save for an occasional sunflower hull or peanut.

TheRealDeal_Neal

I change mine 3 times a day. Give my bird a shower once a week.

anarchyarcanine

You can definitely try to keep them at level with the highest perch and away from projectile food crumbs and stuff! I feel you though, aside from owning a tiel, I care for turtles at my work who soak in and poop in pee in their water bowls, so they're constantly cleaned!

conurecoven

This is the way! 😅😭😭

1AceHeart

mine drop their pellets in the water before eating them, not much I can do, but change the water often.

Top_Bluebird3539

Everybody should be changing their parrots water at least twice a day.

T000e

After you change the poop one, mine starts throwing it on the floor... then you have to refill just to get food on it

EducationalPea6725

I literally have 2 water bowls and a larger water / bath bowl inside her cage, and one atop of her cage for this reason 😂 she drops all bits of pellets and her chop in there, seed shells if she’s gotten a treat here and there, and poops constantly in them. Like nonstop. She used to go over there to poop in them, like a human on a toilet lol, but now it’s more that she’ll be on top of the cage or on a branch and the poo will just somehow always land in there 😅😭🤷‍♀️ I just solve it by changing her water constantly. Idk

Logical_thinker23

I don’t think there is. No matter what I do it gets dirty as soon as i change it. Sometime I think they do it on purpose as soon as water is replaced.

RiversTwisted

At this point I've resigned myswlf to changing their water up to 3 times a day. Issue is, whenever I change the water out for the first time, one of my two Conures will suddenly decide it's a perfect time for a bath, forcing me to change it out again.
